The Project is a continuation of CCAE/CCC on-going collaboration where CCC Architects & Planners come together with the teaching staff of CCAE to promote and develop an awareness around the importance of the design of suitable Integrated Aged Community Housing where 2nd year students undertake a design project which is judged at the end of the year and prizes are awarded to the best 3 projects. Year 2 students from CCAE were asked to consider the architecture of ‘housing’ and ‘home’, its issues and solutions with a particular focus on Age Awareness.

We studied our own living environments in detail and developed our digital drawing skills and methods of representation. Varying housing types were explored in precedent studies to provide an insight into housing design. The semester culminated with a design project of a notional housing scheme based on three sites in Castletownbere . These projects were supported by Cork County Council and provided the students with the experience of working for a ‘real’ client. The flexible housing scheme had to cater for varying age groups, abilities and lifestyles while protecting the context of the site.
