Editor’s Notes Here we are again, back in Lockdown with miserable weather. I’m sure this fact alone (the weather) is the main reason so many people are feeling aggrieved this time around. Last March, we could get out into the garden in the sun, which always makes life feel better. Just now, I’ve (Libby) had enough of the wet, or I have mainly after having to dry down our (relatively new to us) German Shepherd, Skye, after every walk. In this edition there is a lot of articles relating to the sad departure of Revd Fiona Gibson to pastures new. There are pictures of her last socially distanced services showing the gifts presented to her (see pages 24 & 25) along with a Letter of Thanks from the Gibson family (see page 7). The GNiC Ladies are asking for you to make further donations to a Food Bank collection, see page 13 Wendy Worgan, the Village Agent (why is it when I see or write that I think of James Bond or some other spy?) has some free Winter Warmers available to anyone in the village that needs them. See page 6. As for Refuse Collections, we are back to our usual Monday collection day. Remember, garden waste won’t be collected until the beginning of March, but we’ll remind you in the March edition. Remember, if there is anything you would like to add to the magazine please let us know. Libby & Linda

Letter from Katie the Curate Goodbye 2020

Did you see The Sound of Music this Christmas? In a year of changes, it was comforting to sink into the familiar story and sing along with those well-known songs. Which is your favourite? Little Gretl pretending to fall asleep on the stairs at the end of the children’s song “Farewell, So long, Auf Wiedersehn, Goodnight,” made me say “Ahh.” The song starts with “a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall, and the bells in the steeple too” as the children sing it at a grown-up party and finally before they leave their homeland. It’s a lovely song, but I’m rather tired of “Goodbyes”. Are you? Early last year, many of us waved “goodbye” expecting to see our loved ones soon and some of us are still waiting for those reunions. Other things slipped away before we had the chance to wave them off – holidays, celebrations and finally, the Christmas we had been looking forward to. While sadly, some of us grieve for friends and relatives, lost before we were ready to say goodbye. So many of us will have been glad to see the back of 2020, looking forward to better things in the New Year. But there was one last goodbye which has carried over into January. With what seems like too little notice, we bid “Farewell” to Fiona, our vicar. Of course, we’re delighted that her many talents have been recognised as she has been appointed Archdeacon of Ludlow, but it’s sad to see her go. I haven’t known Fiona for as long as you, but I am grateful to have been trained by her. I’m sure she has affected each of our lives in different ways, for which we thank God. So, even as we heave a sigh, and recognise the gap she leaves behind her, we rejoice with her in the opportunities of her new role and say “Adieu” “Go with God”, the God who called you to ordination, the God who brought you to our Benefice and the Loving God who calls you into a new place in this New Year. And as we wave Fiona off, and look ahead to a year which begins with difficulty and sadness, but in which we hope for so much, I’m reminded of familiar words from Ecclesiastes 3. 4

To everything there is a reason, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance. It’s time for Fiona to move to Shropshire and it’s time for us to endure restrictions we thought we’d left behind. It’s time for us to stay at home to protect the NHS and our communities. It’s time to believe that this hard season will not last for ever, but that as He always brings Spring after Winter, God will bring us into happier times. There will be times to laugh and dance, to travel and see those we miss, after we endure these hard times. For now, as we wait for the clock’s ticking to inch us forward to better times, it’s time to hope and pray. It’s time to pray for our country, our health service, those we love. And it’s time to hold on to our hope in the God who loves us so much that he left heaven to live among us, to live out his unfailing love. Katie

Thank you from the Gibson Family We wanted to write one last message to all of you as we move away from Bedfordshire to Shropshire. After our last service in the parishes (online, of course!) we were deeply touched to be given many lovely gifts and we want to say thank you very much indeed to all of you. It’s clear that over the past six+ years you’ve got to know us well as each gift was just perfect. We received chocolates, biscuits, wine (from Flint Vineyard in Norfolk, owned and run by Ben & Hannah Witchell – son & daughter-in-law of John & Alison in Willington), a delicious cake made by Karen Joynes from Cople, a stunning original drawing of all three churches commissioned by Ali from Moggerhanger, a personalised Ordnance Survey map centred on our new home, and some books of walks in the Shropshire Hills and Ludlow. We also had a very generous cheque indeed, for over £660, which took our breath away. We shall probably use it to buy some new furniture, but will let you know.

Thank you, all, very much indeed for your friendship and generosity. We wish you God’s richest blessings in the years to come. Dave, Fiona, Matt & Anna Gibson PS If you’d like to check out Ben & Hannah’s truly amazing (and award-winning) English wines their website is https:// flintvineyard.com.

Mothers Union PRAYER FOR ASH WEDNESDAY Lord Jesus, as we recall your time fasting and praying in the wilderness, help us to be strong in our resolve to imitate you in our devotions. May we come closer to you and know your power in our lives. (M.U. Prayer Diary) 7

EATING IN!.... (Take away) BLUE GINGER, 116 Bedford Road, Kempston, Bedford, MK42 8BG 01234 856800 bluegingerbedford.co.uk Due to lockdown, I have not been able to write the normal review but thought I would try an Indian take away from somewhere that was recommended to me ages ago but that, in all these years, I have only now tried! It’s the Indian restaurant, Blue Ginger, in Kempston. I thought it was time to get with it so downloaded the "Just Eat” App on my phone. Oh! my goodness, a new world! All you do is pop your postcode in and a variety of restaurant / take -aways appear; Indian, Pizza, Kebab, Italian, Thai, Fish and Chips, Chinese, you name it and it was on the app. It tells you what restaurants are open and how long, approximately, the delivery will take, the minimum order, any discounts too. Press the restaurant where you would like to order from and .... voila .... the menu ... magic! You can order via the app, pay via the app and it records what you ordered in case you would like to order the same again. It’s fantastic and there is no charge for the app itself. Of course, you could just call them and order. They are open seven days a week from 4.30pm to 10.45 pm. Orders over £10 for free delivery or you can pick the order up over the counter. I was brave and used my app. It was easy, confirmation came through of my order and expected delivery time. They found our house on time, the delivery man was polite and happy, and the food was still hot. It was delicious. The best Indian take away ever. Loved it. We ordered poppadom’s (fresh and crispy), sauces, Chicken Tikka starter (succulent chicken), Lamb Rogan (medium spiced ), Lamb Bhuna (as it should be ), Makhani Chicken (mild but oh so good), pilau rice, mushroom rice, plain nan, peshwari nann (perfectly cooked). We paid by Apple Pay via my phone, £44 covered a lot of food for 3 hungry people. We ate the lot. The redhead said the Lamb Rogan was fabulous. We will defiantly be ordering from there again. In fact, I'm going to order the same again for tonight. Well done, Blue Ginger and we will be coming to your restaurant as soon as you are able to open again. 12

Scores: maximum score is 10 Service: 5 Food: 5 Total: 10 (perfect 10, it was that good !)

Dear Cople Residents, Thank you for your truly kind donations on the doorsteps at the beginning of December. The food bank collection centre in Bedford were incredibly grateful and we took enough food and items to make up 616 meals!

That is just brilliant considering we are a small village and what a fantastic achievement and support to people in need. It was such a success we, GNiC ladies, would like to do it again and we are asking for your help by leaving items or an item on your doorstep in view or somewhere where we can see as we drive past to collect please? We collect in the morning between 10am - 12 midday. The next date is Thursday 4th February 2021. The food banks need items like: - Healthy cereals, fruit juice (long life), potatoes, apples, kids snack items, toilet paper, anti- bac sprays, coffee, tea bags, nappies, wipes, jars or tinned food, personal hygiene products like sanitary towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, dry pasta, jars of pasta sauce, canned fish and meat, canned fruit and vegetables, milk (dry, fresh, canned or powered), peanut butter, laundry tablets are just a few examples. We would like to do the doorstep food bank collection every three month with your help . Further dates to put in your diary are Thursday 6th May; Thursday 5th August and Thursday 4th November. Thank you for helping us make this happen in such difficult times.

FAREWELL TO FIONA On Sunday 10th January, we said goodbye to our vicar, Fiona and her husband, Dave after her final Sunday service. Fiona is moving to Shropshire to take up her post as Archdeacon of Ludlow and there was a large congregation gathered on Zoom to wish her well. Her faithful ministry and inspiring leadership has been greatly valued by many in the villages over the past six years as well as the personal support she has given to so many families. This was reflected in the generosity of people’s contributions to a farewell gift.

It was a pity that we were unable to join together at a party to say goodbye to them both. However, we were able to see Fiona opening her presents in Moggerhanger church. First, there was a custom-made Ordnance Survey map of the Ludlow area with Fiona’s new house, The Archdeaconry, at the centre. Knowing that Fiona is a keen walker, we also included two books on walks in the area. She was delighted with the chocolate hamper, a multi-layered cake and two bottles of English wine plus a huge bunch of flowers. We had commissioned a picture of the three churches so that Fiona will not forget us as it hangs on her new study wall. She had not told us that it was what she had wanted all along! Lastly, she opened a cheque for £662.40 and expressed her grateful thanks to everyone. We shall miss her! The Benefice Churchwardens

Technology corner

Hello Cople, this month I will cover Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) and not email security, I will delay that for another month. This would be a good point to put the Cople news down and grab a coffee / tea / wine / beer before you continue reading. Maybe pick up some digestive biscuits or hobnobs to dunk in while you are reading. Biscuits of course are optional if you have wine or beer, you can’t dunk them. Actually, you probably could, but it’s socially unacceptable. Back? Great! Let’s get started. MFA isn’t anything new, it’s been around for many years, and I’m sure the first exposure most of you had to it was through some sort of online banking. Back in the day, for those of you that remember times before the mobile phone, banks would send you special device (called a token), where you would have to enter a randomly changing number to get into your bank account. That’s MFA! You are logging in with something you know (your password) and something you have (the number of the device the bank sent you). Nothing has changed, people just now get a PIN to their mobile or use an authentication app. The whole premise is that even if someone has stolen your password (very likely), they won’t be able to access your account without the MFA token. I would be surprised if anyone with an online bank account or credit card isn’t forced to use MFA. So banking is covered, but what about everything else? Facebook, Google, email, online shopping (Amazon for example). All provide MFA, you just need to visit the site security settings to activate it. Full instructions are typically provided. So, why would you want to add a layer of security to social media? Who cares if someone can get in to your account and download your holidays photos, sitting by the pool dunking hobnobs into your pina colada. Well, they aren’t after your photos, but all the data your account contains, DOB, address, places you have been, because this information is gold for someone who wants to steal your identity. My advice, get MFA switched on, at least for the companies I described in this article. The security of your data is as important as security of your money, so protect it in the same way. Any questions, you can email me directly theitguycople@hotmail.com Mr IT Note: Absolutely no hobnobs where harmed in the writing of this article. 30

Julie was quick to put her Pilates online in March, adding meditation sessions for existing clients to help with the first lockdown. She had to rearrange the annual Pilates retreat in June—switching from a trip abroad to a “local retreat” as a mixture pf online classes and socially distanced outdoor classes, Not only has Julie continued to run all her classes with excellent humour and professionalism, but she’s taken the time to check in on clients, particularly those who live alone, or have emotional issues that they are dealing with, outside of classes.

Gardening in February For the avid gardener, there is always something to do in the garden. The ‘to do list’ never really gets any smaller and if anything, grows every bit as voraciously as our most disliked weeds. So, with frost blanketing the ground, now is a good time to prepare for the forthcoming horticultural year. It is certainly not a good idea to walk on frozen lawns as ‘frost burn’ can occur; ever wondered why you see brown footprints zig zagging a lawn? Well, that’s frost burn! Walk on a lawn when there is a frost and your movements will be preserved for posterity! Well, for a few weeks at least. In time, spor and other markings either fade or grow out and happily there doesn’t appear to be any lasting damage. With the latest lockdown strictures firmly in place with only the most selfish and inconsiderate flouting them, inspirational trips to gardens will have to be put on hold as will trips to most nurseries and garden centres. Online growers continue to thrive and although the packaging is often environmentally disastrous, receiving plants through the post have come a long way since dishevelled and often effete shadows of their former selves were delivered with little or no chance of them prospering. Still, the very most rewarding way to garden is by investing in a packet of seeds. The nearest thing to alchemy would be my definition as what may at first glance look like ‘A Handful Of Dust’, in often less than ’Ninety Two Days’ becomes ‘The Loved One’ to gratuitously quote Waugh! With more choice than any other, it is also by far the cheapest way to pack your garden with colour and interest. And what’s more, the achievement is all yours and not the person who sold you it! One seed catalogue I was sent recently, and I get many, seems to my eye, delightfully old fashioned and with some real bargains to boot. Take a look at D.T. Brown; established in 1908, it still describes itself as ‘Growers and Merchants’ and with a monochrome cover, it is a triumph of substance over style, unlike so much of modern life and its pages drip with tantalising fruit and flora.

For a limited time, all 99p seed packets are half price and outstanding value. See www.dtbrownseeds.co.uk or telephone 0845 371 0532 to receive your own copy. 36

Last month’s just for fun question asked for definitions of frequently occurring though often confusing gardening terms. They are as follows:Alba – White, Foliage - Leaves, Helix – Spiral or Turns, Horizontalis – Growing Horizontally, Japonica – Believed To Have Originated From Japan, Lanceolota – Sword Shaped, Rotundifolia Round Leaved, Rubra - Red. QUIZ This month’s just for fun quiz question then, following on from above, is: One former seller of packets of seeds, gave his name to a world renowned sporting contest that takes place every couple of years; what is the competition called and where was the original shop? As usual, many thanks to all of you for contributing to this column, keep them coming, and please contact me with any gardening tasks or queries you may have, lawndocgardens@aol.com or Tel: 01767 627 581 or 07796 328 855.
