Editor’s Notes The recommended measures to control the spread of the coronavirus will mean that many of the activities planned for the coming months will have to be set aside. Watch out for changes. On page 12 the various organisations in the village are gearing up to offer neighbourly help to the more vulnerable members of our community should it be needed. For the next 3 or 4 months Cople will be a very different place we should be mindful of the needs of our neighbours. On page 47, Suki and Holly have written an account of their litter pick around the village. The winter gales have added to the usual accumulation of rubbish and they had a productive day gathering it in. Well done. I usually sum up the main up coming events but as so many of them might not take place this seems rather nugatory. We shall see. I have just been told that the Village Hall will be closed for the foreseeable future. I am still looking for someone to take over the magazine. There are many models of how to run magazines such as ours. Some are paid for by the parish council, some by subscription and some by advertising. Others are sustained by a combination of all three. Cople News has one expense, printing, and this is paid out of our advertising revenue. A subscription restricts the circulation to those who have paid and collecting the annual charge requires a lot of effort that could be better used elsewhere. Using tax payers money is unjustified in my view and our elected representatives would not unreasonably demand some editorial input. By remaining self supporting and subscription free the magazine can go to every home in the village and avoid the trap of preaching only to the converted. I will bang on about advertising next month. If you are interested in taking over give me a call. We could have a conversation through the letter box as I retreat into self isolation. Batten down the hatches and look out for each other

Letter from the Vicar Dear friends As you read this, we shall be beginning one of the holiest weeks of the Western Christian calendar, if not the holiest. (For the Eastern Orthodox Churches it all comes a week later.) We shall enter again into the poignancy of Maundy Thursday, remembering how Jesus washed his disciples’ feet in an act of humble service even though he knew one of them was about to betray him, and how he gave new meaning to the Passover meal by referring to the bread as his body and the wine as his blood. We shall, in our hearts, stand again at the foot of the cross on Good Friday, marvelling at the cost the Son of God paid for our forgiveness and restoration, sorrowing that it had to be at the cost of his own life. We shall live through Holy Saturday, that strange in-between day, the day when we remember a dead Christ, a contradiction in terms, as one writer put it. And we shall come once more to Resurrection Day, that most joyful and glorious of days. It’s the day that shouts that death is not the end. It’s the day that whispers the truth we scarcely dare believe: that there really is hope of new life, new beginnings. New life, new beginnings, hope. These are things we long to know about in a world touched by coronavirus, cancer, stock market collapses, natural disasters, and those caused by human activity. These are things we sometimes scarcely dare to hope are real. But Easter Day tells us they are. We can dare to hope in the face of any tragedy, any disaster, any circumstance. Because Easter Day tells us, as Aslan told Susan and Lucy in Narnia, that there is a ‘deeper magic’ from before the dawn of time, in which horror is transformed into hope, despair into delight, and a peace that just can’t be put into words, or understood until you’ve experienced it, can guard your heart and your mind in Jesus. How do we know this? Christians believe that we know this because Jesus’ tomb is empty. You can’t visit his grave. And so, because of that, one day all that is wrong in our world – all sickness and suffering, even death itself – will work backwards and be no more. That’s the ‘deeper magic’ Holy Week and Easter reveal. Wishing you a blessed and hope-filled Eastertide, whatever it may hold, Revd Fiona Gibson

BE NEIGHBOUR AWARE Considering the ongoing events, we are reminding everyone to be aware of their neighbours and ensure they are all well and coping. If you have not seen them for a while, please give them a knock or pop a note through their door with your telephone number. The organisations below within the village are coming together to plan to see how assistance to the vulnerable can be provided should circumstances require it. The Five Bells, GNIC, Cople Parish Council, Cople Sports and Social Club, The Church, The Friends of Cople Church along with the other clubs.

The Friends of All Saints Church Cople Gin Night We plan to hold an informative and educational evening revolving around gin, in the Village Hall on Saturday 26th September 2020. Details are yet to be finalised, but we will provide gins to taste with appropriate mixers, along with some food, and maybe a quiz and talks on the history of gin and how it is made. More importantly, we would like to invite people who make their own flavoured gins (and I know there are several of you out there who do so) to bring some samples along and enter a competition. Half a litre should be sufficient. A select panel of judges will be gathered to sample your wares and award a prize. Half the Friends committee have already volunteered to be judges and have vowed to put a lot of research into the subject. What could possibly go wrong? So put the date into your diaries, and more details will follow in the near future – but get brewing! Finally, don’t forget that the annual barn dance takes place on the evening of Saturday 27th June at Oak Farm. Tickets will be £15 per person, and will go on sale in May. Details to follow.

Tuesday Club How to sort out your plumbing! Could plumbing be interesting? Well actually, surprisingly, yes. Our guest speaker for March was Sarah Oliver, better known as “Sarah the plumber”. Her original idea was to be called “The Wench with the Wrench”! which she considered when she went into business 12 years ago. Sarah had been looking for a job that would fit in around her children's’ schooling. She managed to persuade a plumber to let her become his apprentice. After NVQ day release and a year working with the plumber, she decided she was ready to set up on her own, many jobs coming through school and playground contracts. Sarah humorously unravelled the language and mysteries of our household plumbing. She brought along charts and explained simply how various plumbing systems worked from all aspects to providing hot and cold water to our central heating. Sarah was very entertaining provoking fits of laughter at some of the awkward and potentially disastrous situations she had found herself in! She gave us lots of tips on maintenance, taking the mystery of it all. One of only 18 registered female plumbers (28 thousand male plumbers are registered!,) “What do you call a highly educated Plumber-a “drain surgeon”! Our next meeting April 14th IS CANCELLED Eithne Dandy.

Caring for your Dog The 5 Principles of Pain. Following on from last month’s article on arthritis I thought I would write about how you as an owner can assess your dog for evidence of musculoskeletal issues which could be helped by clinical canine massage. Signs of muscular pain can be mistaken as simply signs that the dog is getting old or ‘just something that they do’. The reality is however that muscular pain can be caused by anything from normal activities of daily living to chronic arthritic conditions. The 5 Principles of Pain is a useful guide for identifying symptoms to discuss with your vet as part of drawing up a treatment/ rehabilitation plan and assessing suitability for clinical canine massage therapy. The 5 Principles are: gait, posture, ADL’s, behaviour and performance

Gait – is an assessment of how the dog moves. Common issues include:  Limping/lameness or not putting weight on one leg  Stiffness when moving  Slowing down on walks  Hopping/skipping – commonly seen in Terriers  Lack of reach or drive  Crabbing – hind legs move to the side of the front legs; dog is bent through its body to one side. Posture – how the dog holds itself. You may see:  A hunched back (roaching) or dipped back (swayback)  Coat changes including areas where the hair flicks up or dry patches  Twitching or ‘shivery’ skin  Tail carriage abnormal, maybe low and limp as in Swimmer’s tail seen in gundog types or held to one side  Uneven nail wear  Hip or stifle rotation where the dog sits with one hind leg out to the side 30

ADL’s – activities of daily living  Struggling with stairs, getting on/off the sofa, in/out of the car  Not settling and pacing about at night  Showing signs of weakness in the back legs  General signs of ageing  Finding it difficult to get up  Slipping or losing balance on flooring  Lying down to eat Behaviour  Reluctance to be groomed or stroked  Disinterested in things, doesn’t want to be sociable or seems depressed  Nibbling or excessive licking of feet or legs  Snapping at other dogs as a warning to stay away  Frequent rolling on their backs Performance  Agility dogs – pole knocking, weave or contact issues, lack of drive or measuring  Gun dogs – early onset fatigue, retrieval issues  Canicross – early onset fatigue, reluctance to wear the harness, not wanting to pull  Obedience – change in the working position eg down stay or send away  Flyball – turning wide on the box, missing or avoiding the jumps  General – any deviation from the normal performance

Clinical canine massage is a successful, non-invasive treatment which aims to reduce pain and improve mobility putting the spring back in your dog’s step in just 1 to 3 sessions. Fiona Hughes is the owner of Cople Canine Massage Therapy and a member of the Canine Massage Guild.

Wild about Cople One bird which is in full song around the village comes very much to the fore at this time of the year. It is a song redolent of the early spring; especially typical of those blustery, invigorating days when strong winds blows in the tops of the still-bare trees, the branches clatter together like rattles and the sooty-black ash buds begin to swell like dark iron hammered by a blacksmith. If you listen carefully the song seems to sound as if it is coming from faraway; it has a dreamy, echoey quality which seems to softly, but insistently, penetrate all other sounds. Some of the notes are mellow and woodwind-like whilst others are louder (quite incredibly loud if you are standing under the tree in which the bird is singing) but still with a fluty quality – rather like an Irish low whistle if you know what that sounds like. Something else you may notice is that the bird is singing from very high up – often in the very tops of the tallest trees in the landscape and that it seems to relish singing in windy, even stormy weather; sometimes seeming to sing loudly into the very teeth of an approaching gale as if the storms invigorate the bird as much as they can often invigorate us. What is going on here? What is this bird that dares to defy the storms from the top of the highest trees? The bird is a Mistle Thrush; a close relative of our more familiar blackbird and song thrush but the mistle thrush is a bruiser of a bird. Big, bold and pugnacious it stands very upright with a boldly speckled breast; this is a bird you don’t mess with. Loud in all respects, its song is far carrying as it ripples across the landscape (it can be heard up to just over 1 mile away), and the fact that it is broadcast from the tallest trees helps it to proclaim its presence to all. On the right days you can hear a mistle thrush singing from one end of the village to the other. And its call is equally as stirring – if disturbed or alarmed or on the attack or defence the bird has a loud, rapidly repeated, invigorating rattle sounding rather like one of those old, long-gone, wooden rattles fans used to use at football matches (or so I am told). An old country name for the bird is the ‘Storm Cock’ due to its preference for stormy or windy weather and the English name of the bird arises from its liking of sticky mistletoe berries. And, just to complete the image of this fabulous bird, the adults nest very early in the year; often when the branches are still bare and there can be eggs in the nest in mid to late February. This, of course, makes the nest very vulnerable as it can be easy to see amongst the high branches of trees and birds such as magpies are relentless egg thieves looking for easy pickings. However, it’s not quite so easy dealing with a nesting mistle thrush as both parents are bold and capable birds and can be very determined in trying to drive the predators off with much noise and divebombing of the egg thief. It doesn’t always work but sometimes it does, even if only temporarily. Mistle thrushes have even been known to divebomb humans if they consider them to be a threat, in fact, in Wales the bird is known as ‘Pen y Llwyn’, ‘King or Master of the Copse’ due to its storming presence. During the winter the bird will often defend a holly rich in berries from all other birds to use as its own personal supply. 34

As I have mentioned previously, we are managing a small area of the churchyard as a wildflower area so the grass will not be cut until after flowering has finished in late July/early August. I will be putting a small notice up in the churchyard explaining what we are doing and will give more details in next month’s ‘Cople News’. If you would like to be involved please let me know via my email address below. steve.halton@gmail.com

Gardening in April Since going public in these pages about my mole problem - no, not the one on my back but rather the one currently digging away in a lawn that has taken me literally years to improve, a number of you have very kindly been in touch offering potential solutions and empathy. In short, I am very grateful for both, thank you, but... Moley is still digging away! One of the most promising solutions was provided by a charming lady, known only to me as Jean from Harold, who telephoned to suggest the use of onions! I have long known that onions were repellent to many animals but could the humble onion be the answer to my prayers? Eagerly, I grabbed a number from my vegetable rack, peeled them, roughly chopped them into large chunks and then dug into the affected area, inserting a piece before covering with soil. Amazingly, the next day, there were no fresh excavations. Had Jean provided the wonder cure? At the time of writing, it is too early to report whether this has been successful or not but I might just give its pungent cousin, garlic a trial also. Putting peeled and chopped garlic cloves into a bucket of water and steeping them for a week or so, straining and then decanting into a garden mister and spraying aphid infected plants can work well as an insecticide and I for one, would always rather use the power of nature over harsher chemical options. In my correspondence this past month, one interesting comment came from someone who was alarmed to see a number of people using rotavators on his allotment. As well as causing a major disruption to the tranquillity of the setting, the man, a former agronomist, that is, someone whose job is concerned with soil management, made the point that regular use of a rotavator can create a ‘pan’ directly under where one is working. In other words, although the surface tilth may be broken up, in certain soil conditions, clay in particular, the rotating tines will compress the ground underneath. This is problematic for plants requiring a deep root run but also will be detrimental to drainage which given all the wet weather we have been experiencing might be worth bearing in mind. If the heavy rain fall has revealed areas of your garden prone to flooding, one of the best ways of illuminating this is by planting a tree. Trees 44

require a large amount of water and the flooding this country has faced this winter has not been helped by this nation’s obsession with cutting trees down and horror of horrors, building. We continue to do both at our peril. The answer to last month’s question: ‘Unsightly worm casts at this time of the year are on your lawn. What do you do?’ In sports turf and in particular, high standard golf courses, bowling greens and even professional pitches for rugby, football and cricket, casts are dispersed using a ‘switch cane’. As the name suggests, once a pliable wooden rod but these days more likely (and much more effective) to be made of fibre glass is passed over the sword which flicks the tiny piles and broadcasts them. This prevents bare soil patches forming which in turn prevents weeds from germinating. This month’s just for fun question is: moles take their name from a corruption of the late middle English ‘moldwarp’. What does this literally mean?
