Behind the cover shoot For this season’s Copenhagen Fashion Festival programme cover, we went for a stylistic exploration of the winter season and its chilled glamour. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the photo shoot, which you can see in full at copenhagenfashionfestival.com Elite Model Maria Palm is the cover star, shot by fashion photographer Oliver Stalmans. Wella hair stylist Marta Spizewska gave Maria an exquisite, natural hair look, perfect for those winter

If I should mention a few highlights, I always look forward to hosting ELLE’s own traditional fashion dinner where all our closest relations are present, attending ECCO Walk in Style at Copenhagen City Hall, watching Jesper Høvring’s extraordinary (I believe) show at Nimb, and this season celebrating By Malene Birgers 10-year anniversary. What was your first fashion experience?
My first fashion experience was a shoot with up-andcoming top model Lykke May (she was 14) at Gavnø Slot nearby Næstved. Uffe Buchard and Kim Grenaa did the exclusive and extravagant styling with Dolce & Gabanna’s AW99 collection, and I was like a kid in a candy store…
What is your favorite thing to do in Copenhagen?
A Saturday walk in the lovely neighborhood around Grønnegade with my husband and a coffee to go from my favorite barista at Kafferiet at Esplanaden. What is your best fashion advice?
Be true to your style – and don’t forget to polish your shoes, use your lint remover, have frequent facials (including having your eyebrows done) and your roots fixed. 21

BLASt FR OM A SARtOR iAL PA St Exhibition On Thursday during the festival, you’re invited to dive into Copenhagen’s past street fashions—from the 1600s, no less. Archaeologists Vivi Lena Andersen and Charlotte Rimstad give a Danish-language talk on the Copenhagen fashion during the rennaissance. Recent finds have produced piles of shoes and clothing from that era, which can be seen in the exhibition ’The past beneath our feet’, which opened January 12. End the afternoon with a renaissance cocktail and snack! Torsdag under festivalen inviterer Københavns Museum til en tur ned af den historiske catwalk, når arkæologerne Vivi Lena Andersen og Charlotte Rimstad fortæller om renæssancens københavnermode og Københavns rolle som modeby i 1600-tallet. Exhibition Fashion in Film Festival, Birds of Paradise CPH Edt. III is launched in connection with Copenhagen Fashion Festival, and invites you to enjoy the interaction between fashion and film. Cinema has always been fascinated with fashion, allowing sartorial productions to help the storytelling with extravagant costumes and well-dressed heroes and heroines. This time the festival has a Danish angle with lots of Danish brands, including Barbara Í Gongini, Vilsbøl de Arce, Alis, Soulland and Mads Nørgaard, who increasingly employ image-building films rather than runway shows for collection presentations. What has been the greatest experience of your career?
I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one experience.. For me, each job gives me the chance to bring my point of view and aesthetics to the table. My favorite jobs are without doubt the ones where I am allowed to tell a story with a deeper meaning — something that goes beyond the fashion presented in the clothes. What is your best Copenhagen Fashion Week memory?
My best memory is from back in the day, when I had my Copenhagen Fashion Week cherry popped. I was shooting the covers for Dansk Daily, so I had to go to most of the shows throughout the week. It was a whole new world for me, as I was mainly shooting backstage — it was raw, inspiring and chaotic at the same time.
Favourite Scandinavian fashion icon?
Honestly, without disrespecting any of the Scandinavian icons out there, I personally don't follow any specific ones. I was fortunate enough to work alongside Danish fashion icon Margit Brandt before she passed away, which was a proud moment for me. What is your best kept secret about Copenhagen?
It’s a cliché, but it wouldn't really be a secret if I gave that one up.

In connection with the special exhibition ’Record Covers — Revival of the Vinyl,’ Copenhagen Fashion Festival and Designmuseum Danmark host two danish talks where you can experience leading figures tell about their relations with music, fashion and identity. Meet fashion researcher Else Skjold, who has written the article ’Music and Dress’ for the Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion, and associate professor in music Morten Michelsen, who has been active in the development of the field of sound studies. The design museum Ph.D. Laura Liv Weikop will act as interviewer and moderator. You’ll also be offered a glass of wine. What is your best beauty tip?
Don’t take any chances when it comes to your hair. Be patient! With everything that can be washed out easily, however, be a risk-taker. And makeup-wise, practice your look the evening before going out. It’s your eyes that need getting used to seeing yourself with a red lipstick or pronounced eyes — nobody else’s! What is your ultimate makeup item?
I love kohls, and how they make the colours endure while blending in with the skin, without a powdery surface. The look can be shaped and blended however you like, with your fingers, a brush or a q-tip. Who needs eye shadow? Your favourite look this season?
Speaking of kohls — Lanvin and Stella McCartney SS13 both employed kohls on the lower lashline. Clean and straight jade green at Stella McCartney and smudgy black at Lanvin.
Your favourite shop in Copenhagen?
For a beauty nerd like myself, Storm provides the most beautiful marriage of fashion and beauty. But I was in Stockholm recently and saw the whole & Other Stories collection at its first press viewing. It’s H&M’s latest venture within subsidiary brands, which also include COS, Monki and Weekday. An exciting mix of beauty products, accessories, and clothing — I can’t wait for their store to open in Denmark. Your favourite spot in Copenhagen?
During winter months, I love eating stegt flæsk med persillesovs (a traditional Danish pork dish — google it!) and citron fromage for dessert, at Tolbod Bodega, Esplanaden 4. In the summertime, almost everything tastes good as long as you’re outdoors!

How will people be styling their hair this spring/summer season?
What is your best advice for getting a healthier hair look?
We will see a lot of individualism, and rock chick is definitely going to be one major trend. In general, we’ll see more structure in the hair, more layers, and everything going a bit more edgy and not as pretty as the last couple of seasons.
Use hair oil and make sure to use good products and tools for your everyday hair care regimen. Not just a hair mask every now and then – it’s how you care for your hair on a daily basis that makes the difference. So, for example, if you use hot tools every day, make sure to use hair products with heat protection. What is your favourite place in Copenhagen?
I love to walk around in the area where I live, which is just between Frederiksberg and Vesterbro. It’s not in the city centre, but it’s very lively. Complete the sentence? I cannot live without...
Escaping from the cold and dark winter time once in a while. I just came back from a vacation to Dubai yesterday and it was amazing leaving the Nordic winter behind for a while.
