It began in France in 1986 with a small group of skateboarders led by a guy named Platoon. What they wanted was simply to skate in good shoes that didn’t keep falling apart. They convinced Platoon’s shoemaker father, who worked with shoe gurus Yvon and Guy Rautureau, to help them create a brand that would give them what they wanted. Inspired by their tight camaraderie, they derived the name from the word ethnic that came from the concept of a tribe -- etnies. This tribe of skateboarders ignited the French Revolution for etnies by overthrowing the current status quo of duct tape and shoe goo and created a better product that was built specifically for what they did best – skateboarding. etnies built the first TRUE skate shoe. Twenty-five years later, that commitment is unwavering as this tribe continues to press forward.
Every major revolution in history started with a vision and that’s where Pierre-André Senizergues comes into the etnies story. Embraced early on by etnies, he not only had one of their early pro model shoes, but he started influencing the way they designed their skate shoes, taking it to a new level of quality design that pushed the envelope of skate footwear toward the future. Hitting the land of concrete in California, Pierre-André saw the opportunity to create upheaval in an industry and bring a fresh product to skateboarders in the United States. Humble in his beginnings, Pierre-André lived in his beat up blue van for six months and from this van, the etnies American Revolution began. Fiercely passionate, he did whatever it took to build etnies’ presence while staying true to his roots as a Frenchman and a skateboarder. Because of Pierre-André’s vision, etnies detonated change for an industry by raising the bar in what people can expect in skate footwear by pioneering many of the industry firsts that are now standards across the globe- reinforced triple-stitching, shock absorbing technology, enhanced rubber for durability and many more. Today every brand has a flashy name to call their latest and greatest technology, but these skateboarder-driven shoe advancements all started from etnies who fueled transformation for an entire industry, and changed the landscape demanding that as skateboarding progresses, so must the product evolve to meet the performance demands of its greatest participants.
