A(COOL) GIFT KIDS CAN MAKE

diy book with yankee doodle studio

written by heather Walsh photography by Laura black

Skip the macaroni necklaces this year. Grandma already has more than enough. Instead, head to Yankee Doodle Art Studio in Cockeysville to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake treasure, written and illustrated by your pint-sized author. The creative team behind the drop-in arts and crafts space has created a custom process that will lead your child through all of the steps to becoming their own publisher. From sentence starters to art supplies, they have everything you need! Best of all, you’ll leave with a hardbound book that’s perfect for gifting and any age can participate in the process. Littles can draw and dictate sentences to an adult. Older kids can go wild. Simply adjust adult involvement by your child’s age and abilities. If you don’t have time to complete the book at the studio, grab a to-go kit and bring it back for hardcover binding when complete. Binding takes just 5 minutes. Yankee Doodle can even make multiple copies of your child’s masterpiece. Chances are you’ll be so proud you’ll want a copy for yourself, too. Added bonus? Your kiddo might — eek — learn while they create!

how it works:

the DIY bookmaking process

1

2

Pick out your book template (they have options with or without lines, as well as comic book frames). If you need ideas, sentence starter packs are available. Brainstorm.

3

Older kids may want to write a rough draft, while younger kids may want to dive in. Illustrate the cover with markers to make a vibrant statement!

4

Write the text on each page and illustrate the story in the box provided. Markers and colored pencils (all colors of the rainbow!) are available to use at the studio.

Take your completed book to a staff doodler for binding. Binding takes just about 5 minutes, and they can make additional high-quality copies of the book if you’d like.

Yankee Doodle Art Studio is located in Shawan Plaza, 11341York Road, Cockeysville. They offer drop-in crafts, classes for all ages, and many birthday party options along with crafty and creative items in their store! Be sure to visit their website and like them on Facebook.

(COOL) HOLIDAY TRAVEL

how to avoid travel meltdowns written by heather Walsh

Tis the season of airplane rides, late nights, overnights, marathon cookie baking sessions, and squeezing in just one more visit to Aunt Ida. In other words, all of the conditions necessary to brew an epic kid meltdown — no matter how old your mini-mes are. We caught up with Darcy Buck of Charming Sleep Solutions to talk about what steps you can take to plan and make the holiday hustle and bustle easier on your kids — and therefore less stressful for you! Because who needs any more stress this time of year?

“I have been known to travel with duct tape and black contractor garbage bags. Or even set the pack-n-play up in the hotel bathroom with the fan going.” Darcy Buck is a mom who believes that all kids should get a good night’s sleep. That means 11 - 12 hours of consistent sleep so they can be at their best. So if sunlight is a problem at their travel destination, covering the windows with dark garbage bags does the trick. {Although I have to imagine she has seen a raised eyebrow from more than one TSA agent checking her suitcase…} Consistent sleep helps ensure a child’s proper health, growth, and development. But when travel interrupts your child’s routine, it can be tough for your kiddo to keep up with all of the holiday fun. Darcy, a gentle sleep coach and owner of Charming Sleep Solutions, has a few tips for helping everyone get the rest they need. M A I N T A I N C O N S I S T E N CY & MA K E A P LA N

B R I N G E V E RY T H I N G Y O U U S E AT H O M E F O R S L E E P Darcy’s family all use sound machines for sleep. She started using them with the kids when they were babies and now they have travel machines. If you don’t sleep in the same room as your child at home, she strongly suggests getting adjoining hotel rooms, if possible That way the kids can go to bed at their normal time and you can kick back with a glass of wine and OnDemand. Wait a second — let’s be honest. You have kids. You’re probably zonking out as soon as they do. S T AY F L E X I B L E Special circumstances arrive during the holiday season, so make allowances for those depending on your child. Letting your kid stay up hours past their regular bedtime for hot cocoa and movies five nights in a row probably isn’t the greatest idea. But one night? That’s a treat that’s definitely worth it. For all of you.

“One of the easiest ways to maintain consistency when you’re traveling is to stay at the same place every night. So maybe your visiting Great Aunt Ida, your childhood best friend, and your parents in one long weekend — but try and sleep at Grandma’s house every night,” says Darcy.

But be mindful of what’s a good idea for your child versus what you would like to do. While Darcy doesn’t suggest taking your toddler to midnight mass, if it is important to you, make plans for a family member to stay with your child. Don’t miss out because you’re a parent — but don’t set yourself up for a meltdown when you can avoid it.

Speaking of Grandma, make sure she’s in on the plan. If you want your children to be in bed by a certain time every night, let her know. If baths happen before bed at home, make that part of the routine on your trip.

P R E P A R E F O R R E C O V E RY

B E P R E PA R E D F O R C HA L L E N G E S Who’s going to get up with the early risers the first day of vacation? Who’s going to soothe a restless child in the middle of the night? Talk with your partner and split the responsibilities so both of you get a good night’s sleep as well. “And don’t forget the lovey!” says Darcy. “You should even bring a back-up. Not having one could create a disaster.”

“Traveling is tiring!” says Darcy. “Don’t come home late on a Sunday night and think you’re going to jump back into your regular routine bright and early Monday morning.” Be sure to give yourself a few days to adjust back to normal. Sounds like a great excuse to take a staycation day, right?

comfortfood TIDINGS OF

AND

written by Jen hausner

photography by chAnga bell

Sometimes deciding what to eat at a restaurant can be overwhelming. Not because I can’t make a decision — or because my child has spilled his entire water all over the table and my pants — but because I want to eat it all. So my dilemma ends up being which is the best entrée to devour? Keeping with the spirit of the season, here are five must-try ‘warm and cozy’ meals from some very (cool) local gems.

SOTTO

SOPRA

Pan seared branzino fillet with Romanesco broccoli, potato cake on a bed of red pepper vodka coulis topped with a pineapple salsa. Even though this was too pretty to eat, it was delicious. The coulis complimented the perfectly cooked fish, while the potato cake was fried to perfection. Fresh ingredients and fun textures made this the perfect lighter meal.

The Corner Pantry

The Corner Pantry Cumberland Sausage: Anson Mills aged cheddar grit cake, sautÊed greens, braised onion, ale broth. I don’t always order sausage, but I could easily see myself getting this again. Tender meat was paired perfectly with the crispy cheesy grit cake. The greens were meant to swim in the ale broth and the onions on top were a delectable garnish.

THE ROWHOUSE GRILLE

Coffee-dusted pork loin with Japanese pumpkin risotto, rapini, and red wine glaze. Pork is the new filet here, especially when it is cooked to its tender, juicy potential. This is a must-have. The coffee rub gets a sweet flavor from the caramelization. And who would have known pumpkin can add so much flavor to risotto?

PEN & QUILL

Pot Au Feu (French beef stew): braised short rib, beef tenderloin, bone marrow potato puree with beef consommé and root vegetables. This is why I WON’T give up meat again. The meat was falling apart in the savory beef consommé. The perfectly swirled potatoes helped me soak up the rest of the sauce. Heaven.

CUNNINGHAM’S

½ roasted chicken, carrots, carrot butter, watercress, and radish salad with a chicken pan gravy. Chicken can be overlooked, but do NOT pass on this one. Crispy and herb crusted chicken skin is kind of the best way to start a meal. The carrots were delish and I ate the fresh watercress and radish salad because I love a good salad. But let’s get back to the chicken. It was incredible. The best part? Chicken pan gravy. Ah-mazing.

living classrooms foundation

ABOUT

ABOUT

Living Classrooms Foundation strengthens communities and inspires young people to achieve their potential through hands-on education and job training, using urban, natural, and maritime resources as "living classrooms.”

People with AIDS and other life-challenging conditions often become caught in a vicious cycle of poor appetite and physical weakness that prevents them from providing adequate meals for themselves. They suffer from severe illnesses that limit their physical activity; low income and high health care costs, and isolation from their support network during the work day. Severe malnutrition can be a life-threatening condition.

Founded in Baltimore in 1985, Living Classrooms Foundation has grown into an educational and economic force that combines one of the city's most cherished assets — its beautiful and historic harbor with some of its most overlooked — the thousands of bright, ambitious children and young adults who are struggling to succeed against terrible odds.

Moveable Feast provides nutritious foods and other services in order to preserve quality of life for people with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening conditions.

HOW TO HELP

HOW TO HELP

Organize a Hat/Glove/Winter Coat Drive Living Classrooms would love to provide EVERY student they serve with at least a hat and pair of gloves this winter. Host a drive at school, church, sports group, workplace, or even have a party and invite guests to bring cold weather items to donate. Be sure to get the kiddos involved in creating signs, flyers, and collection boxes!

Kitchen Assistants If kids are 14 years of age, they can volunteer with a guardian/adult/parent in the kitchen. Kitchen Assistants are needed everyday from 8 am until 4 pm and Thursday evenings.

Volunteer during Saturday Sports Club Every Saturday from 9 AM - 11 AM at Patterson Park Youth Sports and Education Center, Living Classrooms hosts a sports club. You and your child can volunteer together.

Urban Garden Beginning in February, children under 14 can volunteer in Moveable Feasts’ urban garden to help grow fruits and vegetables they use in their kitchen. Food Deliveries There is always a need for people to deliver food and this can be done as a family.

sharebaby & diaper share

the baltimore station

ABOUT

ABOUT

All over Maryland, newborn babies go directly from birth at the hospital to a homeless shelter. Mothers have to choose between food and diapers. Toddlers don’t have shoes that fit, or even a toy to call their own. ShareBaby’s mission is to help babies get the basics that they need for the best start in life.

Did you know 40% of homeless men are veterans?

diaperSHARE is a project of ShareBaby and serves as Baltimore’s diaper bank. The goal of diaperSHARE is to provide a consistent supply of disposable diapers to infants and toddlers in need in Baltimore. diaperSHARE partners with existing social services organizations with an established client base of families and children to distribute diapers.

The Baltimore Station is in their 26th year of innovative therapeutic residential treatment. Their program supports veterans and others who are transitioning through the cycle of poverty, addiction, and homelessness to self-sufficiency. They concentrate on helping those men who have valiantly served our country and have fallen on hard times. Their residents have NO criminal background.

HOW TO HELP

Meals Families can participate in a dinner service, which runs 5:00-7:00 PM. You can help prepare the meal, serve, and most importantly share a meal. When a family comes in and sits and talks with these men, it’s this simple interaction that helps with their social skills and builds self-esteem. Most of these men have children and grandchildren of their own, and this is such a nice way to warm their holidays.

HOW TO HELP

Host a ShareBaby Party ShareBaby encourage friends, moms groups, families, and neighborhoods to hold their own ShareBaby party. For the holidays, turn your holiday party or New Years' Eve bash into a ShareBaby party! Every guest brings an item to donate. No need to think about what to bring your host! They've thought of everything! Get creative and hold themed parties. "Pajama pizza party" where kids wear their favorite pjs, play/chat with your friends and donate a new pair of pajamas! And you can SHARE your baby shower. Register for newborn basics and donate a “newborn kit.”

Fundraising/Recreational Activities Other ways to volunteer here are hosting a fundraising event or doing recreational activities with the residents. This could be a holiday themed craft or a community cleanup day. Or if a family has a specific activity they would like to do, they will see if there is interest among the men and go from there.

FIND your holiday

SPECIAL GUEST CONTRIBUTOR k e l l y w i l k e s,

ojas wellness

If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy! Yet, women often find themselves at the bottom of their priority list after kids, relationships, work, and family. Women have a misperception that taking care of themselves is not important or even selfish. Just as airline passengers are instructed to put on their own oxygen masks before helping their children or fellow passengers with theirs, we must learn to attend to our own well-being first. Enjoy these tips and put yourself at the top of your to-do list this holiday season.

You actually DO have the time. Instead of saying "I don't have time,” try saying "it's not a priority" and see how that shifts your perception. Often we trick ourselves into thinking we have a shortage of time, and as a result operate at a frantic pace that you won’t want to do. For example, you might have time to vacuum but you just don’t want to do it. Instead of saying “I don’t have time to vacuum,” try saying “I'm not going to vacuum because it's just not a priority.” Changing our language reminds us that time is a CHOICE. If we don't like how we're spending an hour, with this shift in perspective, we can choose differently.

Book a massage. And another. And another. Many people believe that going to a massage therapist is just a way to pamper yourself. The truth is, the scientific benefits of receiving a well-done therapeutic massage are endless and can alleviate muscle pain, insomnia, depression, and significantly affects stress and anxiety. Additionally, having something to look forward to that makes you feel good makes the future seem bright, which can diminish stress in the present moment. According to Gretchen Rubin, author of the Happiness Project, anticipation is key. By having something to look forward to, no matter what your circumstances, you bring happiness into your life well before the event actually takes place. In fact, sometimes the happiness in anticipation is greater than the happiness actually experienced in the moment.

At Ojas, all day long, we hear “I have been looking forward to this massage all week/month/year!” Ojas specializes in amazing therapeutic massages and as a (cool) progeny reader you get $10 off the already low new client massage. Just use code COOLPRO.

Wear White or Off-White Winter is typically a time for darker colored clothes. However, wearing white or light colors allows you to project light. It is said that wearing white increases your energy field (aura) by three feet, which increases your physical energy and protects you from taking on other people’s negativity. Try it for yourself and see how the colors you wear affect your mood and energy!

Fix Your Breathing This is the Holy Grail of tips! Quick, try this now: place your hand on your belly and take a deep breath in. What happened? If you’re breathing incorrectly, your chest expanded, belly contracted and your hand moved in toward your spine. Almost everyone sucks at breathing. I am not exaggerating. As a yoga instructor, I have seen first hand that most people are what I call “reverse breathers.” “Reverse breathing” is a learned style of breathing that actually activates your fight or flight nervous system and has you in an endless cycle of stress.

So, let’s fix it. Put your hand on your belly and as you breathe in, make sure your belly expands and your hand moves away from you. As a you breathe out, your belly should contract and your hand should move toward you. Watch a baby breathing as they sleep… you will see exactly what I mean.

Yogi Hair Hack Consider the possibility that the hair on your head is there to do more than just look good or give you bad hair days. From a yogic perspective, hair is an amazing gift of nature that can actually help raise energy. If you feel your energy starting to wane, get a wooden comb and brush your hair. This will stimulate the energy meridians in your scalp and invigorate you. All the tiredness of your day will be gone! If you have long hair, another energy booster is to put your hair in a bun on the crown of your head. In India, a Rishi is known as a wise one who coils his or her hair up on the crown of the head during the day to energize the brain cells. A ‘rishi knot’ energizes your energy field (aura) and stimulates the pineal gland in the center of your brain.
