ď ˝

Mobility scooters are fast becoming one of the most popular assistive devices for people with mobility issues. This device offers more comfort and convenience compared to other assistive devices such as manual wheelchairs. For people with mobility issues, a mobility scooter is their link to an independent and dignified condition.

Fit for use ď ˝

Not all people with mobility issues can use a scooter. Users have to get confirmation from their occupational therapist or doctor that they are physically able to use a scooter. A potential user has to possess adequate balance, arm strength, eyesight, coordination and concentration. These are the preconditions of using this device. Lying to the doctor won't help as well. An unfit person using a scooter only exposes themselves to unnecessary dangers.

Practice makes perfect ď ˝

Before going out in public, make sure you have logged a couple of hours practising driving the scooter. You also have to know how to move the device around in a variety of situations. Driving a scooter is like driving a vehicle. You have to follow the rules and keep yourself as well as pedestrians and other drivers safe.

Make yourself visible ď ˝

Make sure that you are seen by both drivers and pedestrians from afar. While scooters are designed to be easily visible, the colour might not be enough for other people. Depending on the time of day and the situation, some colours may also make it more difficult for people to see you. The best way to ensure visibility is to add reflective lights and strips to the scooter's body.

Know the rules ď ˝

Some areas place limits on scooter use. Speed limits are often enforced and some areas such as highways are off-limits to scooters. In areas without specific laws, the same rules that govern cars also apply to scooters.

Wear a helmet ď ˝

Most of the deaths that are associated with mobility scooter accidents could have been avoided had the person worn a helmet. Head trauma is one of the leading causes of accidental deaths and wearing helmets can certainly protect you from serious head injuries.

Always assume that you are unseen

ď ˝

Just because that your scooter is covered with lights and reflective strips does not mean that everyone can see you. People could be preoccupied while using their smartphones, searching for a certain radio station or checking their GPS. Always assume that people can't see you and exercise caution.

Stay away from roads ď ˝

Do not use the mobility scooter on roads or highways. If possible, only drive on sidewalks as long as it's wide and easily manoeuvrable. You may cross the road or drive on it but only if absolutely necessary. As much as possible, use pedestrian lanes for crossing. Car drivers may ignore the scooter and its user will be put in serious danger.

Use pedestrian crossings ď ˝

Even if your next destination is immediately across the road or street, only use a pedestrian crossing for crossing. Do not attempt to cross the road, especially if there are lots of cars. A driver might not be able to react in time when they see you and you will be at high risk for a collision.
