W

hat would have been a typical day, just before spring on the golf course turned out to be truly memorable for Chicago based interior designer Frank Ponterio. It was the day that he added private jet interior designer to his bio. Projects such as this dovetailed nicely from his already established Chicago-based architecture and design firm. From exclusive private country clubs to historic residences, boutique hotels to swanky penthouses, each case is an opportunity to expand his repertoire. So what’s the catch? While Frank was figuring out how to lower his handicap, his longstanding client and golfing buddy

proposed a challenge – and it wasn’t let’s play a skins game. He recently purchased a pre-owned Cessna Citation CJ2+, and it required some upgrades. It seemed straight forward, but it was anything but. The caveat was this: Cessna needed to be dressed to impress and ready to fly to the Masters in August in thirty days. One look at the plan and Frank knew his client’s original request for a “clean up” would be a bit more intensive, adding more stress to the already pressing timeline. Despite the confined space restrictions, Frank employed the same design methodology as he does with residential interiors. “Passengers notice everything. Your audience in a private jet is a captive

one, that’s why, as a designer, you have to pay attention to every detail.” With this concept in mind, Frank recalls, “Exactly thirty days before the practice rounds kicked off, we got to work and began to dismantle the interior completely, stripping it down to the fuselage.” The initial spark for the cabin’s design and the color scheme came from a rug recently used in one of Frank’s interior projects. Scott Group Studio, known in the industry for their high-quality bespoke carpets, reinterpreted the customdye wool that furnished the foundation for the balance of the interior’s design. Seats were upholstered in high-performance soft, creamy white leather from Townsend and custom navy trim from Garrett Leather. Lower walls were outfitted Private Air  |  Winter 2019/2020

with textured fabric from Holly Hunt and upper with leather from Tapis, another industry heavyweight. Custom gloss mahogany millwork, lined drawers, and Alicia Adams alpaca throws complete the clean and elegant overall look. It would only be fitting that all of the avionics and electronics were updated as well.

It wasn’t exactly the most relaxing month of Frank’s life. “30 days before the practice rounds kicked off at Augusta, we got to work. We had team calls every morning, reviewed photography from the aviation contractor, and kept on top of every detail. In the end, all the attention paid off. My client was able to arrive on time in style,” explained Frank.

I STOOD ON THE EDGE OF A LAVA LAKE AND WITNESSED THE HEARTBEAT OF THE PLANET By: Geoff Mackley

W

hen I was a boy, my father had a great interest in the outdoors and weather, and whenever there was a flood or storm, Dad would take us out in the car to watch it. Once I was old enough to drive, I bought myself a Land Rover, and that enabled me to go a lot further afield, chasing severe weather warnings whenever they were issued in New Zealand. I would be in the thick of it, right there in the flooding and the chaos. In 1995 a volcano erupted on the North Island here in New Zealand, and I went straight there and climbed up the volcano while it was erupting. I got into a spot of trouble because it had been closed off, and I wasn't supposed to be there. But my shots got used all over the world, and at that point, I realized that there was a market for volcano footage. Marum Crater is on the volcanic Ambrym Island in Vanuatu, out in the middle of the South Pacific, and it had been something that had fascinated me since the late 90s. From the rim, you can see this incredible lava lake bubbling away inside, about 400m down. There are only four or five volcanoes like this in the world. Private Air  |  Winter 2019/2020

I'd been trying for about 15 years to get down into the crater because I wanted to stand on a ledge about 30m above the lava lake, but every trip my team and I had made been unsuccessful, mainly because of the weather. The storms can be ferocious in Vanuatu, with hurricane-force winds and torrential rain, and that makes the climb down into the crater even more difficult and dangerous. It's not easy to get to either: you first fly to Port Vila in Vanuatu, then you use a helicopter and a fixed-wing plane to take you 160km to Ambrym. Hardly anyone goes there. It was 2012 when I finally got down into the crater. We'd already set roped about halfway down in the build-up to that day during a period of good weather, and then we had to put a whole load of bolts into the rock to enable us to keep going because you can't just go down on one 400m-long rope. If you did, there'd be too much movement on the rope, and you'd be bouncing up and down, dragging rocks down on top of you. Rigging the ropes is very tiring because you're wearing a gas mask to protect you from the noxious fumes and carrying a lot of heavy gear. It's hot, too – within a few hundred meters of the lava lake, you can really feel it. 40

When I finally got the bottom, I didn't have my heat suit on because I only intended to rig roped and then go down the next day to do some filming. But when you've been trying for so many years and suddenly get that close… I decided to try and get as near as possible without the heat suit. I walked over to the edge of the lava lake and looked in. There's nothing to describe what I was looking down at – the best I can think of is that it's like looking at the Sun. You can only really stand it for six or seven seconds because it's 1,050°C, so I put my fire brigade heat suit on and my air tanks, and then I could stand there for ages. But despite multiple attempts spanning more than 15 years, close-up footage of a bubbling lake of lava in Vanuatu eluded him… until the day Geoff finally achieved his life’s ambition.

because the suit reflects it all back away, although you're still kind of aware that you're essentially standing in an oven. What's weird is that you're breathing this cool compressed air from the air cylinder, and yet all around you is pure mayhem. You do feel well insulated from it, but you know that if you take the suit off, you're pretty much dead. And so, I just stood there, watching this boiling rock. You're watching the heartbeat of the planet – something so powerful it's making rock boil and making it fly through the air like boiling water. There's nothing like it. minutes, but since then, I've been down there several dozen times with film crews and people who want us to lead them down there. I know that, without exception, everyone will say it's the most amazing thing they've ever done, and it's kind of a buzz for me to expose other people to that. I'm not used to it, and I'm comfortable around it to the point where it doesn't even phase me anymore – although it probably should. When I think about standing on the edge of the lava lake for that first time, I'm still amazed that I was the first person ever to do it. There aren't many places left on this planet where you can truly say that you're the first person to be there. 41

Three magnificent volcanos to get up close and personal with. Heat suit not required KILAUEA Incredibly, this volcano – one of five hulks on Hawaii’s Big Island – has been erupting continuously for 32 years. Currently it’s rather aggressive, but in quieter phases Kilauea’s roof can be reached by the extraordinary 30km Chain of Craters road. If it’s not obstructed by lava, of course. PITON DE LA FOURNAISE Translated as “peak of the furnace”, this 2,632m volcano on Réunion island in the Indian Ocean is known for its striking shows when cascading lava flows into the sea. Access to the caldera is sporadic, but you can still take a helicopter to within a safe distance of the action. MOUNT STROMBOLI This island volcano north of Sicily is almost always hard at work – its constant eruptions have earnt it the nickname “the Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”. You can see mild explosions at 400m, but a climb up to the 926m crater (for which a guide is obligatory) is unforgettable.

I SPENT THREE WEEKS ON “MARS” WITH A TEAM FROM JAPAN

The other thing I really loved was leaving the station to go outside, putting on the pack, helmet, gloves and radio and sitting in the airlock: the moment you open the door it’s like, bang, you’re there. They have a rover vehicle, too, which you control remotely from inside, and I loved traversing the terrain just like the Curiosity Rover that’s currently on Mars.

As junior engineer I liked overseeing the EVA (extravehicular activity) equipment, making sure everything was working, and so on. But I also wanted to be in charge, so the next year I was put forward to command a Japanese crew.

I

’m a huge sci-fi fan and grew up in Canada watching Star Trek and Dr Who. But my passion for visiting Mars was given a shot in the arm thanks to the Mars One project four years ago. It’s the brainchild of an enterprise based in the Netherlands, where I’ve lived for the past decade, and it was looking for people to live on Mars. Thousands applied, and I got through to the third round, but not the final 100 candidates. The Mars Society, however, has been running simulated missions in Utah for more than a decade. The idea is that crews spend time there in a Marslike environment, so that any potential problems that may be encountered on a real space mission can be anticipated. As part of my Mars One application process, I went for two weeks in 2014. Private Air  |  Winter 2019/2020

It’s strange being at the research station. You’re in a harsh climate in the middle of nowhere, in a red, Marslike setting. You’re working on new technologies for food production and sustainability, and perfecting elements of teamwork – you live the astronaut’s life. One of the biggest challenges was to live in a confined space with people you don’t know. Besides a few Skype calls in advance, you have no idea what these people are like, and to throw yourself into total isolation with them for a long period plays on your mind a little. It’s a two-storey facility, like a water tower in size. There are six dorm rooms and a communal area that doubles as your eating area, plus science labs and work stations, hygiene facilities and a greenhouse. There’s also an observatory with an impressive telescope. 42

They do an exceptional job of mimicking life on Mars. The facilities are pretty raw and definitely put you back to basics, but the location really does feel like it’s been picked up from Earth and dropped on Mars. If you put yourself in the right frame of mind, you can fully immerse yourself. The whole experience really changes you. You realise that the pursuit of material things like cars and houses aren’t that important – sometimes going back to basics provides a better quality of life.

PAMELA NICOLETATOS Adventurous mother of two Pamela Nicoletatos has been dreaming about going to space since she was little, and jumped at the chance of a one-way trip to Mars when a Dutch venture called Mars One announced that it was looking for candidates. With the reality of space travel still some years in the future, however, she volunteered for the next best thing: a stay at a remote research station in the wilds of Utah where people lock themselves up for weeks on end and pretend that they really are on the red planet…

My visits to the research station have really ignited my passion for space and for Mars in particular. I’m pretty committed: I do a lot of online courses in astronomy and astro biology, and I’m always looking at other projects around the globe – anything that gives me the slightest chance of fulfilling my dream and getting to space. While it’s not Mars, there’s something being planned right now which involves 80 days at the Utah facility followed by 80 days at the Mars Society’s Arctic outpost. silver-bullet cancer cure is still elusive. But lab-coated armies of researchers are making incredible progress on the next best thing: gene therapies that kill tumors. Small biotech startups and pharmaceuticals giants alike are running thousands of clinical trials of genetic therapies the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had greenlit. Unlike standard chemo, radiation, and surgery, they enlist the body’s natural defenses to fight cancer. For investors, the companies leading this game-changing health trend offer great opportunities to boost your private wealth and public health. The genetics revolution is part of a new wave in healthcare called “precision medicine.” The idea is to customize treatments based on a patient’s genetics, as opposed to standard one-size-fits-all therapies. One way to get in on the action: Add a biotech exchange-traded fund (ETF) to your portfolio. The Ark Genomic Revolution Multi -Sector ETF (NYSE: ARKG) is a great bet. The fund holds many gene-based biotech stocks poised for breakout gains. ARKG’s managers project that by 2022, it’ll cost less than $100 for people to have their entire genome mapped. SECURING RETIREMENT FOR WOMEN Challenges Abound, but Women Can Create Their Own Pensions

ou may see her at the cash register of the local supermarket or drugstore. She's in her 60s, 70s, or 80s and can't afford to retire. Her savings and Social Security benefits don't pay the bills. It's a common problem. Women, on average, earn less than men, and that translates into lower savings and smaller Social Security checks. The National Institute on Retirement Security found that the average income of women 65 and older was 25% lower than that of men. Women live longer, so their savings have to last longer. And fewer employers today offer traditional lifetime pensions. Women, in particular, need to build up assets so they can create their pensions. Women tend to be more riskaverse than male investors. But the safest investments, such www.privateairny.com

as Treasuries and certificates of deposit, are both low-yield and taxable unless held in a retirement account. Another low-risk savings vehicle, the fixed annuity, is often overlooked by women. That's unfortunate because fixed annuities can build faster wealth than other safe bets. Fixed-rate annuities behave much like CDs, offering a set interest rate for a set number of years. They are guaranteed by the issuing insurance company and are further backstopped by state guaranty associations. The level of protection varies by state. Two key advantages help women build savings faster: tax deferral and generally higher rates than CDs or Treasuries with a comparable term. Without taxes, savings can grow faster. Fixed annuities are a valuable supplement to IRAs and 401(k)s. Private Air  |  Winter 2019/2020

During retirement, a fixed annuity can be annuitized: that is, converted into a guaranteed stream of lifetime income, paid monthly, no matter how long that is. In other words, a woman can use it to create a private pension. Economists say lifetime annuities are an excellent choice for women A different type of annuity offers another route. Instead of putting money in a fixed annuity and annuitizing it later, you can use the funds to buy a deferred lifetime income annuity now. You deposit your money with an insurance company. In exchange, the insurer will begin paying you a lifetime stream of income starting at a future date you specify. The longer you can afford to delay taking payments, the larger they'll be. If you need income right away, you can buy an immediate lifetime income annuity instead. Many economists recommend that women (and men) devote a substantial portion of their assets to lifetime income annuities because they offer insurance against the financial risk of living to a very old age. For most people, lifetime income annuities should comprise 40% to 80% of their retirement assets under current pricing, economist David F. Babbel of the University of Pennsylvania wrote in a 2008 paper on lifetime income for women. Income annuities yield a lot more

than other fixed-income investments because each monthly payment includes both interest on the deposit and a return of a portion of your principal, Babbel pointed out. For example, each $1,000 monthly payment might be made up of $191 of interest and $809 return of principal. The latter is tax-free because the insurer is returning your own money to you. The insurance aspect is where a lifetime annuity provides unique value to long-living women. Once the annuity owner has surpassed her life expectancy and all principal has been returned, payments will still continue undiminished. In this example, she'll get the $1,000 monthly payments even if she lives to 100 and beyond. The only difference is that the entire payment will then count as taxable income. As with all forms of insurance, there's a cost for protection. But Babbel found that lifetime annuities provide modest profits for insurers, and mark-ups were quite low. The cost of the insurance built into the annuity is higher for women because of their longer life expectancies. But Babbel's research concluded women are actually getting a better deal than men. That's because women, on average, will get 42 more monthly payments from a lifetime annuity. When adjusted for the timing of the payments and the interest earned… women pay less than men for equivalent annuities, wrote.

When a woman and man buy an annuity on a joint-and-survivor basis, it's no longer an issue because the annuity is priced to reflect the last survivor's life expectancy, added. Deferred lifetime income annuity versus buying and later annuitizing a fixed annuity Neither method is inherently superior to the other. Investing in a fixed annuity with the option of annuitizing it during retirement provides more flexibility because the annuity continues to grow in value. If you need the money before retirement, you can tap into it, though you may pay a tax penalty if you make a withdrawal before age 59½. If you don't want to annuitize it, you can withdraw the money at once or gradually. In contrast, when you choose a deferred lifetime income annuity, you typically no longer have a cash value. But in exchange for turning over your money to an insurer, you get some powerful advantages. A woman who does this will know exactly how much income she'll receive at a future date. If interest rates decline in the future, she might get less income if she instead annuitizes a fixed annuity. Also, there's an advantage in firming up your plans now and knowing how much you'll receive in the future, instead of waiting to act, when you not might be able to.

BIZ TITANS REVEAL HOW TO REEL IN NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS GONE ROGUE Inspirational industry experts, including executives, best-selling authors and pro athletes, chime in on how to re-energize your resolutions and keep career and life goals on course By: Merilee A. Kern, MBA

A

s we approach the second calendar quarter, we’re entering that precarious time when many begin to flail and outright fail with their New Year’s resolutions—no matter how impassioned or well-intentioned they were at the time of inception. This phenomenon is so pervasive that a litany of studies are “peeling back the onion” to reveal exactly why so many are unsuccessful in fulfilling career, life and self-enhancing promises we’ve made to ourselves. One recent Psychology Today article reveals that there may be four specific reasons “you may be standing in the way of your personal growth.” These are goals that are unclear, or feeling overwhelmed, discouraged or not ready for the change. And, while having a backup plan is an anxietyalleviating strategy often proffered by field pundits, an Elsevier-published study titled, How backup plans can harm goal pursuit: The unexpected

downside of being prepared for failure, explores the notion that, “the mere act of thinking through a backup plan can reduce performance on your primary goal by decreasing your desire for goal achievement.” Speaking of anxiety, failing at New Year’s resolutions just may be impacting your emotional health. A report published by ReearchGate.net correlates the “conflict between goals (inter-goal conflict) and conflicting feelings about attaining particular goals (ambivalence)” that are both “believed to be associated with depressive and anxious symptoms.” Whatever the reason your own New Year’s resolution has veered off-course, it’s never too late to rally, turn the tide and start realizing some quick successes. But it does take a bit of concerted effort, ideation and bona fide grit to make those resolutions a reality. In an effort to pull back the proverbial curtain, I tapped a variety of high-achievers and “serial doers”—

“Firestarters” in various industries and trades to share advice on what it takes to start, create and even disrupt in order to achieve goals. Their anecdotal circumstances and points of advice also exemplify differences between people who actually make things happen and those who only think about making impactful changes, but never quite get there. #1: Be Persistent with a Purpose Best-selling author, lauded corporate executive and soughtafter motivational speaker Steve Pemberton recommends unleashing “the power of persistence” with visceral determination. Having overcome a litany of adversities growing up in the foster care system to ultimately become a C-Suite powerhouse for global leaders the likes of Monster.com, Walgreens and Globoforce, Pemberton has walked the walk when it comes to “surthrival” and perseverance. Relative to the research mentioned above regarding the helpful or hurtful nature of back up plans, for Pemberton there was no such thing. There was simply no other option than to persist toward his goals, however small or large, that were doggedly pursued one at a time until, collectively, he reached that mountain peak. Then, he did it time and time again, also having spent much of his professional life helping others do the same. His childhood experiences not only gave him the resolve and tenacity to stay the course, but to do it with purpose and meaning—for Pemberton, a burning desire to “pay it forward” and help others break through obstacles in their own lives. #2: Consistency Breeds Commitment Ask people if they are committed individuals and many will say “yes,” however; commitment is often defined or regarded quite differently from culture to culture, and even

person to person. Individuals often assert their commitment to their goals until a circumstance arises that knocks them off balance, comfortably absolving themselves of blame in the process. It’s no wonder a whopping 80 percent of New Year’s resolutions are purported to fail by February. “In order to remain committed to a goal or cause, one must conduct themselves with steadfast consistency in working toward it, and upholding it when you’ve achieved it—no matter what hardships present along the way,” urges social activist and acclaimed personal injury attorney Christopher Chestnut, partner at The Chestnut Law Firm. Despite Chestnut’s amazing early career trajectory, including recognition from former President Barack Obama (who was Senator at the time) for courtroom excellence, earning a National Bar Association award and winning a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against Big Tobacco, he suddenly found himself immersed in challenges threatening his reputation, livelihood and future at large. This included being in a dispute with his former mentor. While Chestnut was faced with possibly “losing it all,” having many chances to quit, his devotion to the idea of “justice because you deserve it”—the actual slogan of his law firm—gave him the emotional strength and fortitude to remain committed to the profession he worked so hard to attain. Consistency forges a path and, rather than focusing on the end destination, holding on to the ideals for “why” you want to grow can reinforce your commitment and serve as guideposts to help you navigate those inevitable bumps in the road. #3: Remain in Relentless Pursuit Russian-born Eugene Gold grew up poor, ultimately immigrating to the United States with the hope of a better life. In the process, he faced setbacks too numerous to count, from

financial to professional to social. But he was relentless in working toward his career goals. So much so, Gold was coined a “relentless-preneur” for his unwavering belief that rejection actually fuels success. Gold reveres failure and regards rejection as an asset. falling behind on their New Year’s resolutions can actually parlay pitfalls into renewed intentions that can reinvigorate. #4: Value and Demonstrate Loyalty It often takes a strong character to accomplish things in life, and this holds true for New Year’s resolutions as well. This according to “Character Coach” Gary Waters who enjoyed a 30-year career as a NCAA basketball head coach. Waters believes that character begins by being loyal to yourself and that quitting is the most disloyal thing you can do. Loyalty means different things to different people, of course. For Waters, loyalty is about the commitment one makes to a cause. It involves a feeling of devotion or obligation to something in both good times and bad. Other definitions describe loyalty as involving faithfulness to something to which one is bound by pledge or duty. In all instances, however, loyalty is about integrity—keeping one’s word or upholding expectations as demonstrated through one’s actions, optimally in a sustained and habitual manner. Waters believes that ingraining a sense of loyalty to one’s own wants and needs is a fundamental aspect of character building. Once you’ve mastered this for yourself, you can then impart the value of loyalty on those you have an impact on—be that in the workplace, at home or on a playing field. Irfan Khan also knows a thing or two about loyalty. As the president and CEO of Bristlecone, a company whose size he has doubled the last four years by completely centering it around the needs and wants of his customers, Khan is an expert in

“antifragility.” A concept defined by popular economic thinker Nassim Taleb, an antifragile system is one that, “instead of breaking under stress and change, thrives under it. The antifragile grow and improve from external shocks.” While typically applied to supply chain management and a consumer-centric approach and attitude in business, Khan asserts that trials and tribulations that test and attempt to undermine one’s loyalty can, and should, actually make that loyalty stronger and uncompromising. #5: Recalibrate When Required It is to be expected that one will face stress and difficulties in their road to successful resolutions, but some of those roadblocks may be signs it’s prudent to rethink your goals altogether. Career coach Sheeba Forbes faced this same dilemma when starting her practice intended to help women advance in the workplace. Many times, as her business was establishing itself, Forbes had to step back and reevaluate if a particular goal was what she actually wanted—or even needed—or if it was time to “course correct” and adapt her objectives slightly to accomplish the bigger picture of what she set out to achieve. This ability and willingness to readjust and reacclimate to new conditions and situations taught her the value of taking a break, stepping back to re-evaluate goals and ensure the “why” behind them still aligns with current circumstances and desires. To this point, Dr. Quinella Minix, a personal performance coach, concentrates on intrinsic motivation. She advocates a focus on knowing what drives you and why. Minix underscores that it’s easy to get

distracted by the “wrong why,” which can lead you down a path that wastes time and energy and can often take you further away from your goal. The demonstrated value of strategic recalibration aside, when it comes to getting New Year’s resolutions back on course, for many the secret sauce is simply a matter of maintaining one’s vision, focus and persistence. This mix is what helped former NFL wide receiver Marques Colston become the New Orleans Saints all-time leading wide receiver (one of the top 50 in NFL history for receiving touchdowns) and, today, an entrepreneur helping retired athletes and other professionals become skilled entrepreneurs and investors in their own right. “Even though I attended a small school, my ‘plan A’ was to go to the NFL,” Marques notes. “When people asked me if I had a ‘plan B,’ I would respond that my ‘plan B’ was for my ‘plan A’ to work. I just didn't see it any other way. It was all or nothing.” Can this “all or nothing” mentality help the throngs of folks failing with their New Year’s resolutions reel it back in and taste victory in their own right? It seems to me that such staunch intentions can certainly be a helpful means toward that end. But reality is there’s no one single method that can guarantee goal-setting success. The insights and perspectives above can help you ascertain what’s missing in your own plight and freshen your approach, optimally lighting that fire in your belly and sustaining it until you cross the finish line. It may not be easy, but perhaps you can perceive this truth as a thrill rather than a kill.

THE LIBRARY Libraries are not just rooms for storing books. They are palaces of the imagination. While public libraries are on the brink of being a thing of the past, residential libraries are the newest luxury and must-have status symbol. By: Andrew Humpreys

s it possible that to the list of defunct building types – castles, cotton mills, public baths – we might one day soon add the library? Public libraries are closing across Europe, and the Americas as the job of the storage and retrieval of knowledge migrates to the digital realm. Architectural historian James Campbell argues that libraries have, since ancient times, proved adept at adapting to new technologies. In his The Library: A World History, he takes us to the oldest library in the world, the Tripitaka Koreana, whose shelves hold timber printing blocks rather than books. He introduces the Malatestiana Library in Cesena, Italy; completed in 1452, it looks more like a chapel, with rows of pews under a vaulted ceiling. Its bulky volumes are chained to desks; if you want to read a book, you are directed to the desk where it's located and must sit there. If you want a different book, you have to move to the desk where it's chained. With printing, books became smaller – and less precious – so they could be unchained and stored on shelves, first in alcoves, and later in stacks of multiple stories. By the 17th and 18th centuries, having a library became a status symbol. Some libraries, such as that at Austria's Altenburg Abbey, contained far more in the way of riotous decoration than they did books. Some libraries rebound their books to match the décor; others painted Trompe d'oeil books on their walls to disguise their meager collections. In the Private Air  |  Winter 2019/2020

19th century, gas lighting raised the risk of fire, and libraries became some of the first buildings to be constructed of iron. Campbell hedges his bets on the future of the library. They are places in which to read, but also to think, to dream, and to celebrate knowledge. He says there will always be a need for such places. Perhaps, as it did in the 17th and 18th centuries, the library will be the ultimate status symbol again – just not for public use. Private collectors are snatching up rare books at auction at record-setting numbers. Wealthy homeowners are already building grand personal libraries to house their vast collections. Case in point: inventor, entrepreneur, and founder of Priceline.com, Jay Walker's Connecticut estate is home to a 3 ½ level, 3,600 sq. ft. library embellished with custom woodworking, glass floors, and an angular staircase that is said to be inspired by the Dutch artist, M.C. Escher. Aptly named, The Walker Library of the History of the Human Imagination, the 50,000-volume library holds a remarkable selection of rare works and objects including a 1776 copy of the Declaration of Independence and an atlas from 1669 noted for being the first to show the sun at the center of the solar system. Whether public libraries will be obsolete or whether they will involve books and still be called libraries, only time will tell. But the trend for the ultra-luxurious private libraries has just begun. 54

tarting in the late 1800s, anxious to emulate European aristocracy, American magnates began amassing grand collections of premier-quality Persian rugs from the Safavid Dynasty (16th century through mid-18th century) and other early Oriental rugs to embellish their palatial homes. Many of the collectors’ names remain familiar: John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, and William Randolph Hearst. Over a ten-year-period, George W. Vanderbilt, a descendant of Cornelius, purchased 458 rugs for his residences, including his 250-room North Carolina Biltmore estate. Today, pieces from these collections can be found in New York’s Metropolitan Museum, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, and other august venues. Such toptier pieces rarely come to auction, but when they do, they receive

considerable attention. In 2013, a 17th-century Mughal rug from the Vanderbilt collection sold at Christie’s for $7.6 million. For the last forty years, Jan David Winitz, president and founder of Claremont Rug Company in Northern California, has followed in the footsteps of the art dealers who helped curate and assemble these important, early collections. To that end, Winitz developed his “Oriental Rug Market Pyramid,” a learning tool based on his long-time knowledge and experience. It has successfully helped 21st-century rug aficionados understand the merits of these extraordinary artifacts in their quest to acquire masterworks for display in their homes (some of Claremont clients’ substantial residences can accommodate 70 rugs or more at a time). Winitz’s Rug Pyramid, a six-level ranking of all handwoven Oriental rugs from historical pieces to

modern production, takes into consideration every aspect from artistry, craftsmanship, quality of materials, condition, rarity and age, to provenance. Auction records for Museum-Level rugs, the highest tier in Winitz’s pyramid — primarily 15th through 18th-century pieces that the early American mega-collectors amassed — continue to be broken. Several years ago, one sold at auction for $9.59 million, a record at the time. In 2013, that record more than tripled when a 17th century Sickle Leaf Kirman, formerly owned by mining, banking and railroad baron William A. Clark and estimated between $5 million and $7 million, pulled in a whopping $33.7 million. Today, intact Level 1 pieces are incredibly scarce and cost-prohibitive for floor use, and few galleries and auction houses have much access to Level 2 and Level 3 rugs, the finest pieces woven in the 19th century.

taken a year to achieve a decade ago. For every expertly curated collection Claremont purchases, dozens of rug caches are offered that fail to meet Winitz’s exacting standards. The Potomac Collection passed muster. The last important auction focusing on these late 18th century to 1875 rugs, from the estate of Vojtech Blau, a prominent New York carpet gallery owner in the mid-20th century, was held to soaring success by Sotheby’s in December 2006. Its top lot, a 9’ x 11’ Persian Bakshaish rug woven 160 years ago, estimated at $80,000 to $120,000, sold for $363,000. To understand the significance of this uptick of interest in Level 2 and 3 rugs, it helps to gain insight into why broad-scale recognition of these treasures has been so long in coming.

Thanks in great part to Claremont’s efforts, the market for these HighCollectible and ConnoisseurCaliber carpets has been escalating. Case in point is Claremont’s “Potomac Collection”, an assemblage of over 130 extremely rare 19th century pieces amassed over three generations by the heiress

of a Virginia-based family, was held this summer. Given the collection’s exceptionally high merit, this cache was offered for sale by invitation only to Claremont’s preferred clients. Within three months of the opening of this private sale, 80% had sold, a feat that might have

The best of these High-Collectible and Connoisseur-Caliber rugs, which are the epicenter of this elevated collecting interest, were created from the late 18th century through 19th century, during the rule of the Persian Qatar Dynasty. In 1925, the last of the Persian monarchies, the Pahlavis, came to power, making a point of downplaying the Qatar-period weavings for political reasons, in the same way that newly minted Egyptian pharaohs routinely defaced or destroyed the statues and monuments of their predecessors. This age-old tactic by the Pahlavis is explored in the just-published book, The Persian Carpet: The Forgotten Years 1722-1872 by Hadi Maktabi. It says: “From the political perspective, the Safavid period was lionized, and all subsequent art history was dismissed until the restorative dawn of the Pahlavi rule” (p.7).

This practice slowed the recognition of great 19th century rugs, as it facilitated the rug market’s misunderstanding of what constitutes true quality. Over the last century, it traditionally graded Oriental carpets primarily by knot count and pile height, elements favored in the 20th century Persian decorative rugs (Level 5) that the Pahlavis orchestrated—instead of at times astonishingly original artistry and colorways reflected in the carpets of the preceding century. Another contributing factor in the delay in recognizing the artistic heights reached by the best 19thcentury rugs is that the majority of those purchasing art today often make choices based to a large extent on recognizable “names” — Picasso, Matisse, Jasper Johns, Warhol to mention a few. Winitz stresses, “Imagine if these works were unsigned. That there was little evidence of who made them, or exactly when. Imagine how much more difficult it would be if a work of art had to be taken completely on its own merits, its emotive and aesthetic impact,” Winitz asserts, “This is exactly the situation with Oriental rugs.” Signed rugs are mostly inscribed with the name of the person who commissioned them, not the weaver or workshop that wove it. In most cases, carpets can be identified only by the locale where they were woven (Sultanabad, Tabriz, Bijar, etc.). But even then, eight out of ten 19th century pieces fall into the fashiondriven High-Decorative category (Level 4)—primarily woven for the European market — handsome but often lacking visual depth and unique artistry. Furthermore, demand for all but the best of High-Decorative rugs, Winitz notes,

has decreased due to contemporary home design, which the general affluent public incorrectly sees as incompatible with antique rugs. Among his clients, many are successfully incorporating 19th century rugs into their contemporary decors, as are style-makers such as Ellen DeGeneres, he adds. One way to spot serious collectors is by their “overflow” inventories. Claremont’s storage facility currently houses 765 client rugs, 157 of which were purchased in 2019 alone. 350 of the stored pieces belong to a single collector. Eighteen other clients in the United States, Italy, and Australia have opted to create their own rug “vaults”, dedicated cedar-lined rooms; one houses 325 pieces, another 195. So why stockpile? Motivations vary. Many collectors recognize the discrepancy between the perceived value of an art-level antique rug and other types of art and are convinced that Levels 2 and 3 rugs have yet to come into their own and, like Museum-Level rugs, their availability will continue to decrease and their worth will continue to accrue. Somewhat to her own surprise one Claremont client noted when viewing the suite of antique rugs in her home gallery of favorite paintings, “I love my rugs more than I love my Diebenkorns!” Other clients are motivated in part, through the recognition of the notably decreased access to these top-tier Qatar period weavings. Still others view their caches as tangible inheritance assets to be saved for their children. And there is the added benefit of getting to create one’s own private, rotating displays. Collectors with more rugs than they can display

enjoy periodically “switching things up.” Winitz notes that when his team lays down stored inventory (Claremont provides an annual rotation service for major clients), it is not uncommon for the client to remark, “It’s like an old friend coming to visit.” Such emotional attachment isn’t unusual. “Selling my rugs,” collectors often say, “would be like selling my children,” a comment they don’t usually make about the other artworks they own. “The emotional as well as intellectual and visual effects that great rugs can have — that’s what makes art so compelling!” Winitz explains. “The eyes of clients continually get honed, just like a wine connoisseur develops a more ‘mature’ palate,” he continues. “They learn to almost instinctively recognize the difference between a “pretty” rug, an outstanding one, and one that’s a true masterwork.” New visitors to Claremont often comment on how expensive great rugs are. That’s because they’re seeing them through the lens of home furnishings. “Once their eyes have opened up, those same folks often say how undervalued they are as an art form,” he says. Winitz observes how exciting it is for clients to be able to recognize the varying qualities of antique Oriental rugs -— to differentiate between good and great, attractive and profound, commonplace and unique. “This is one of the most fulfilling aspects of rug collecting for both my clients and myself — when they see the magnitude, nuances and visual harmony for themselves, without having a “name tag” to look at or being told which rug is important and which is not. I’m always deeply satisfied to see the light of recognition in their eyes.”

Contemporary Trompe l’Oeil Master, Anthony Mastromatteo’s intriguing, eccentric works that evoke deep-thought through impressive illusions on view at Rehs Contemporary NY. By: Bella Kalt

T

rompe l’Oeil is French for “to deceive the eye”, an historical tradition in which artists fool us into believing we are gazing at the actual object. Imagine looking at a painted fly that is so real that you want to swat it away, or a painted loaf of bread so real that birds will fly down to peck it. That’s trompe l’oeil, an art form that makes us challenge the limits between the painted world and ours. And no one does this quite like Anthony Mastromatteo who is a modern day master of the technique. Mastromatteo compels us to examine what exactly it is we are looking at… is it the real deal, or merely an image of something depicted? Quite simply, the artist wishes to impart that what the viewer is looking at is… paint. Indeed, his supersized renderings of comics taped to stark backdrops are so familiar and realistic that it is easy to think of it as an old comic strip taped to a panel. The artist himself explains his thinking about his work as a selection of tools and habits based on: “The placement of important elements in relationship to the realization of an ever-present persistence of play, experimentation and openness as vital to a healthy and lifelong creative orientation. If this last element is not present and nurtured, then the first two will eventually become stale.” 60

The real truth is that his work is more than paint on a canvas or letters on a page… we are observing ideas and the meanings that definitely run deep in the body of his work. Take for instance Mastromatteo’s word/image work Advent, which features the words “wait” and “weight” paired with a pocket-watch supported by the watch’s hands. Conventionally the word Advent alludes to the weeks of waiting and preparing for Christmas. One can simplying take this work to mean that you are waiting for something of significance. He cleverly juxtaposing the words to signify the weight of waiting for the best moments in life, while visually depicting the “weight” of time. Whether a comic, a poem or simply the tip of a pencil, this Contemporary Trompe l’Oeil Master challenges the viewer with truly convincing visual illusions. Perhaps it is just some paint on a canvas, or an old comic depicting Superman flying over the New York skyline, or maybe, just maybe it is something more than that. RETURN TO THE MAMOUNIA A daughter recalls the artistic result of cross-cultural dialogue between a world statesman and the son of a warlord. By: Sam Bayoumi

he fascination artist Hassan El Glaoui (1924–2018) had for horses began at just seven years old when his father gave him and his brothers some pocket money. The other brothers spent theirs here and there on frivolous things. Hassan bought a horse. You might have thought his father would be very angry, but he felt it was an excellent investment. Besides, Hassan's father liked horses and had a whole stable full of them. Private Air  |  Winter 2019/2020

What sort of father, you might wonder, gives his son enough pocket money to buy a horse? He was Thami El Glaoui, a tribal warlord who, with the backing of the French, ruled southern Morocco from a power base in Marrakech for most of the first half of the 20th century. Hassan's daughter, Touria, tells the story of the young boy and his horse, as she is the 45-year-old founding director of the 1-54 Contemporary African Art 62

Fair, which takes place in London, New York, and Marrakech every year. She holds an MBA in Strategic Management and International Business from Pace University, New York and before 1-54 spent years working in banking, tech, and telecoms around the world. It's hard to connect this dressed-down, easy-going woman with a grandfather who, according to the May 20th, 1957 edition of Time magazine, ran a feudal empire, the revenues from which, “ranging from www.privateairny.com

levies on Marrakech’s prostitutes to commissions on every commercial transaction in his domain, had made him rich beyond any man’s dreams.” By the time of Touria's birth, the family wealth was gone - stripped away in the wake of Moroccan independence, when anyone who had been allied with the colonial French was punished for it. She grew up in a series of ”regular” houses in the Moroccan capital of Rabat, all of which would have: “A very nice area for my father's studio, which was always at the heart of the house. He always painted, as long as I remember." Hassan El Glaoui’s love of painting went back almost as far as his love of horses. "But my grandfather was not supportive of his painting," says Touria. Help came from an unexpected quarter. Winston Churchill made his first visit to Morocco in 1935; it lasted six weeks, most of which he spent in Marrakech. He was captivated by the beauty of the country and was to return on numerous occasions, his last visit being in 1959. He favored La Mamounia hotel in Marrakech, where he would take up residence, amply provisioned with quantities of wine, spirits and www.privateairny.com

Champagne, boxes of cigars, and his painting equipment. As well as being one of the most significant political figures of the modern age, a grand orator, and the author of numerous books of history, Churchill was also a gifted artist, and painting was his favorite pastime. "When I get to Heaven," he wrote, "I hope to spend the first million years painting." He was a regular dinner guest of Thami El Glaoui. “The story was that Churchill saw a painting in my grandfather’s office,” says Touria, “and my grandfather told him, ‘don't know what to do with this son of mine, he just paints all day and all night.’ Churchill said he thought my father had talent, and painting was something he should pursue.” The upshot was that, at the age of 26, Hassan El Glaoui was packed off to Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. On his return to a post-independence Morocco, he was able to get a job working in the office of King Hassan II. The two men played golf together, and the King became an admirer of Hassan's paintings, which frequently depicted the equestrian traditions of tribal Morocco. “Luckily for my dad, the King liked to 63

make gifts of his artworks to official state guests, and we've got letters from President Bush, Mitterrand and Giscard D'Estaing thanking him for his paintings.” At one point, Touria settled in Europe to be closer to her aging parents. She began acting on behalf of her father, dealing with the museums and galleries who wanted to exhibit his work, “getting involved in the legal stuff.” Today she is busy prepping for the upcoming year’s 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fairs which highlights work from artists and galleries across Africa. UNIQUE METHODOLOGY INTERNATIONALLY-KNOWN DESIGNER, STEF-ALBERT INCORPORATES HIS LOVE AND KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC INTO HIS DESIGNS

T

here’s no getting around the fact that interior designer Stef-Albert sees the world a bit differently than most of us. As a musician and an artist, he has a heightened sensitivity to his surroundings that enables him to sense things in a room that the average person cannot.

The designer says he begins to visualize things in the room, adding “There is a certain logic to it. I take notes and then I go to my drawing room.” Once the “logic falls into place,” StefAlbert says he sometimes feels a little guilty about how quickly the design process goes. He credits his musical background with helping him see the current and future components of the room clearly.

When he has a new design project, StefAlbert first meets with the client to listen carefully to the client’s ideas and desires for the space.

“A room is like a song,” he explains. “There is a certain order to it... Music is based upon a very simple structure. It starts with the melody. If you don’t have the base, the structure can get lost.”

“From then on, I guide them gently through the design process,” he says. A next step is for him to spend some time alone in the space. “A room can be so many different things,” he explains. “What I design for a client is not necessarily what I would design for myself. I am in customer services after all. However I want to spend time alone in the space because the space dictates what needs to happen there.”

He goes on to discuss that it is no mystery how a hit song becomes a hit song. “Many people tend to just throw things together in a room, but the reason a hit song is a hit song is because everything is just right. It is balanced.”

Explaining that light, dimensions, and location all dictate what he can do with a space, Stef-Albert says he spends a few hours alone in a room, often just sitting on the floor in the middle of an empty room. “I observe the room and I take notes... Then everything seems to fall into place.”

Born and raised in South Africa, he has residencies in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and in Provence, France. Stef-Albert is selective about the work he takes on, saying, “I will turn down a project if it does not offer creative potential or creative reward.” “I approach each design as a composer would in outlining the form of a symphony. Layers are built within classical proportions, while artistic liberties create one-of-a-kind originality. My design process is therefore not selecting beautiful objects to fill a space, but rather the skillful orchestration of proportion and combination.”

“The primary function of design is to make itself invisible while conveying the taste, and, above all, the lifestyle of the client,” Stef-Albert says when asked about his design philosophy. “My role as designer is to enrich the perspective and experience of the client, and to assist in establishing his or her own individual standards.”

“A successful room is measured by how one feels in the space,” he continues. “For me, a room must not merely look good, it must feel good... When I am choosing pieces, I ask, ‘Can you place yourself in that chair for more than five minutes? Can you imagine having a cup of tea in the chair?’”

He stresses that the three main elements of his work are balance, beauty, and rhythm as opposed to trend, force, or pretense. “Rooms are often impressive at first glance,
