e all have that one special room in our house that makes us feel at home.
It’s the one place we can go to where we feel at peace and relaxed. For some it’s their kitchen because they love to cook, or their dining room because they love to host family meals, or their bathroom because they love to take bubble baths and read. For others, they find solace and comfort in their living rooms huddled on their couches with family watching movies or playing games or reading books with their children in their themed bedrooms.

Most of us smile when we think of the places and items in our home that bring us this warmth. The memories created in our homes are just as important as the rocking chair where you held your child for the first time, or the dining room table that belonged to your grandmother, or even the grandfather clock that keeps watch over the house at night. Our homes reflect our personal style and the products we place in them play a part in that comfort. I have an oil painting of a lighthouse that was my dad's and it's the centerpiece of my beach-themed living room. I have a crocheted blanket my mom made me that is part of my cabin-themed office. Every one of us have these centerpieces in our home that inspire us to decorate with them incorporating them into our design plans. Here’s the thing, when we think about decorating our home, most homeowners don’t know where to begin. We might have a vague idea in our head of what we want or we may have a special lamp or paint color picked out to help guide our choices, but the thought of putting everything together in harmony is hard to do. We have good intentions as we head out to a big box home improvement store, but find ourselves standing in the aisles staring at a range of products and end up becoming confused. There are too many 8
choices and decorating styles to choose from. You pick a few things here and there, go home and try to piece them together. In the end, you may have a great paint color on the wall and a few great lamps, but your curtains may be the wrong color and your flooring choice too light for the room. This is where interior designers come into play. When they add custom pieces and decorating elements together, it’s decorating magic. Whether they are helping you re-do a bathroom, add a bit of whimsy to a child’s bedroom, add a chef inspired look to an outdated kitchen or turn your rec room into a dream library with built-in bookshelves and sliding ladders (my dream room), interior designers have the serendipitous ability to make all our decorating dreams come true. One such interior designer is Jess-Lee Ceravone, owner of Halo Home located at 801 Dickinson Ave. in Greenville. Last year, Jess-Lee decided to take the plunge and make one of her dreams come true by opening up a brick and mortar retail store at the location that used to be home to Dapper Dan’s Antiques. She used the magic of the building’s past, re-vamped the space and her vision became a reality last fall. This is the first home furnishing and interior design company to open up in the Dickinson Avenue Corridor and

Halo Home showcases a range of products from custom furniture, accessories, lamps, rugs, all things home décor, gifts, jewelry and a line of fragrance products featuring the store’s signature scent, Sweet Grace, which has a delicate yet earthy blend of passion fruits mixed with sparkling tea and classic patchouli. It also offers fabrics, custom upholstery, bedding, wall hangings, mirrors and a library of products to turn your house into a home. When you walk into her bright and open store, you breathe in the signature scent. It’s mellow and warm and inviting which is exactly how Jess-Lee wants you to feel when you walk inside her store. For Jess-Lee, decorating comes naturally. As a kid, she was always getting grounded and sent to her room. In an age without cellphones, she made the best of it by rearranging her room and moving furniture around creating new looks. Fast forward a few years and in 2008 she completed her first design job, which was designing the Tri Sigma house. Jess-Lee gives props to her role model, her father, who showed her at a young age what determination and a
strong work ethic can lead to. Her dad spent many years living in an orphanage when he was a child. He eventually graduated high school, attended ECU, graduated, became a history professor and was one of the football coaches at ECU. He never let his upbringing be an excuse for him to fail. After training, he enlisted in the military and became a pilot. He even decided in his 30s to go to law school, graduated and became a judge. He’s retired now, but his years of measured success did not go unnoticed, and Jess-Lee adopted his work ethic striving to make a name for herself as well. She remembers when she was 16 years old, her dad had her work in the tobacco fields during the hot summer months, and even though it was grueling work, it instilled in her the value of hard work. You can see that drive and determination when you visit her store and see the attention to detail through her design set-ups and see the before and after images showcasing her wide range of decorating skills. Halo Home has a large selection of styles and products to fall in love with. Jess-Lee’s personal decorating style lends itself to industrial elements like Edison bulbs, metals, mixed with a vintage twist along with raw elements and layered

Jess-Lee wears many hats, juggling work and motherhood with a smile. She also offers commercial and residential design and offers special promotions to builders and real estate agents. She is recently married and has two boisterous teenagers. Every day has its own energy mixed with both rewards and challenges. A typical day for her includes dropping the kids off at school, opening the store, handling special orders for clients, setting up deliveries for the multiple design jobs all in various stages of completion, managing inventory levels and staff. It’s a delicately balanced game with a lot of mov-
ing parts. Between greeting customers and helping them select design pieces, gifts and other products, she is running around setting up and having consultation appointments with new and prospective clients. It’s a challenging, rewarding experience that Jess-Lee is excited about and happy she gets to do every day. “It’s my passion. I love being able to bring my client’s vision to life,” Jess-Lee said while showing me around the store and helping a customer at the same time. I was tired just watching her assist two customers, run to the other side of the store, help move a piece of furniture and decide how to showcase a shipment of new pillows. It’s easy to see why so many people have been talking about the little decorating shop “around the corner” with its welcoming feel, impressive list of decorating items, and lead designer Jess-Lee, who is way past getting her feet wet. She is ready to jump in head first and continue living and designing her dream one lamp, furniture piece and decorating job at a time. “I think my ship has finally come in,” Jess-Lee said as the day winds down and we both partake in a glass of wine. She has earned hers and then some.

DESIGNED FOR DOWNTOWN GREENVILLE COUPLE'S RENOVATIONS REVEAL THEIR LOVE FOR THE CITY BY KAREN ECKERT PHOTOS BY JULIETTE COOKE
L
ongtime Greenville residents Jarma and Tony Khoury have been eager for years to embrace a downtown, urban lifestyle while at the same time preserving some of the city's history. This past December, just before Christmas, they made that happen when they moved into their new home in an upstairs condo unit in a renovated building at the corner of Fourth and Evans streets. However, this was more than a simple move to a new location. Rather, it was the culmination of a 22-month project that was a collaborative effort of many individuals and organizations, including the City of Greenville’s Public Works Department and the Historic Preservation Committee, said Tony Khoury. And it all started with a lunchtime idea. Khoury said that, as many as 15 years ago, he would pass by the building as he walked to and from lunch every day. At that time, Tony was the managing principal of The East Group, an engineering firm located nearby on Evans Street. The building, which is over 100 years old, was originally the site of Frank Wilson’s The King Clothier. In later years it became the location of The Three Sisters clothing store and, most recently, it was the site of Bradshaw’s, a wig and dress shop. Even though the upstairs windows were all bricked in, Khoury saw potential in the top floor as a future place to live, he said.
“I just loved the (building’s) old nature.” Khoury said he kept his eye on the property, hoping that one day it would become available for purchase. Finally, a couple of years ago, that day arrived and, along with real estate partner Morris Moye, the Khourys were able to buy the two-story building. The Khourys own the top floor, which has been renovated into a residential loft with a rooftop deck, and Moye owns the ground floor, which will continue to be used as a commercial space. Globe Pharmacy is scheduled to open July 1 and will be the downstairs tenant, Khoury said. As renovations got underway, it was important to the couple to keep the old nature of the building intact, Khoury said. Len Tozer with Tozer Builders Inc. was the general contractor for the project and “he did a phenomenal job,” Khoury said. “We went in and gutted the whole building,” Khoury said, “(but) we reused as much as we could — old doors, old wood.” Plaster was knocked off to expose original brick walls, which were then cleaned. Some patches of plaster were left intact to create visual interest and to serve as a reminder of the past, he said. The Khourys said they were pleasantly surprised when they found out they could use the existing wood floors on their top floor’s main level. “They’re not perfect. They’ve definitely got stains on them
... but we wanted to reuse the original wood,” said Jarma Khoury. “So that was kind of fun when we redid the floors and saw them come alive.” A pivotal moment in the renovation for Tony occurred early in the process when the second-story interior walls were taken down and the bricks were removed from the windows, he said. “When we opened up those windows and (we) had all that light spilling in, we said, ‘Wow!...This could be fun.’ We kind of visualized what it could be and that got me excited,” he said. Helping form the vision of “what it could be” was Brad Williams of BW Architecture. With Williams’ design help, the top floor, which is accessed by a tall staircase near the ground floor private entrance — or via the residential elevator — was turned into a dining area/den that opens onto a kitchen with an island. Off the kitchen, separated by barn doors, is the master bedroom with its spacious master bath and closets. Also on the main level is a laundry room. The ceiling, which is 28 feet tall at its highest point, allows leeway for a two-bedroom loft area with a bathroom for guests. “We like a lot of open space,” Tony said, which the condo, at 2,700 square feet, can provide. A tall, interior staircase leads to a private rooftop deck where the Khourys can enjoy even more open space. There they can grill out, relax in front of the outdoor television,

entertain family and friends and enjoy views of the city. Jordan Proctor, an interior designer with Coastal Fog, also played a role in helping the Khourys shape their vision for their home, working with them to achieve the layout and the look they wanted. The design style they were going for was a blend of contemporary, industrial and traditional, the Khourys said. While many of the furnishings in the home are brand new, Jarma said they were able to re-purpose and update a few pieces of old furniture, such as a buffet they already owned, a china cabinet that belonged to her mother and a round side table that belonged to her grandmother. Artwork on the wall in the main living area includes a mix of traditional and contemporary pictures, said Jarma. The fan in the den is industrial. “In (the master) bedroom I have an industrial-looking lamp, but a contemporary light fixture,” Jarma said. On a visit to one of their grown daughters, who lives in New York City, the Khourys observed the popularity of the warehouse, industrial look with its exposed brick and duct work. They wanted to bring that look to their own home in Greenville, Tony said. At the same time, the Khourys said they wanted their home to feel down to earth, livable and friendly, so when people come to visit they feel at home. “We want to be comfortable and sit and spill something 20
and it’s okay,” Tony said. Proctor also helped with color choices, Jarma said. While some walls sport the original, exposed brick, some of the new interior walls are painted. At Proctor’s suggestion, one wall is painted white with gray trim, rather than a more standard gray with white trim, Jarma said. During the renovation it was important to the Khourys to use local talent, labor and businesses, they said. When decorating the home, Jarma said that she “tried to shop local” as much as she could. She said she found choosing the different fixtures and doing the bathroom and the kitchen to be the most fun part of the project. Tony said that the renovation was a lot like peeling back the layers of an onion, discovering something new every time. Sometimes the discoveries were happy ones, like the original floors they were able to keep, and sometimes the discoveries brought challenges to be addressed. When some wood rot and termite damage was discovered in the roof, “we had to do some significant structural reinforcement,” he said. Tony’s advice to anyone tackling this type of project is to “be prepared for the unexpected” and “roll with it.” “It’s going to be harder than you think, take longer than you think (and) cost more than you think,” he said.

Even so, the Khourys like “being part of something new, fresh and exciting,” Tony said, and it’s important to them that they are supporting Greenville and downtown living. One of the things they enjoy is easy access to the city sidewalks where they can walk to the Town Common, they said. With the onset of spring and milder weather, they look forward to riding their bikes more. A foyer closet just inside the private ground-level entrance provides storage for their bikes and easy access to them. The Khourys view a walkable, accessible downtown as an attractive feature and a way to keep young adults from fleeing to other cities, they said. “The center (of a city) is the heartbeat,” Tony said. The downtown needs stimulation, giving younger people — or retirees, not just younger people — access to the arts, theater and restaurants, he said. “We’re excited about what we did here,” Tony said, emphasizing it was a collective effort on the part of many. The Khourys want to encourage others to invest and live downtown also, and they enjoy sharing their new home with others. “...It gets the ideas out and other people thinking and dreaming,” Tony said. “And it will help our city, hopefully.” Karen Eckert is a staff writer for Her Magazine and The Daily Reflector.

SHARP FEMALE MINDS NEED IRON: ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH? BY SARAH GROSS The weather here in eastern North Carolina is finally warming up and that means it is time to fire up the grill again. With Memorial Day right around the corner and all of those yummy barbecue foods on the grocery store shelves, it’s the perfect time to talk about iron in women’s health.
First of all, what does iron do? It helps blood carry oxygen to different parts of our bodies, especially to our lungs and muscles. Plus it helps our brain function and

keeps our immune system strong. Iron is an important mineral for women of all ages and life stages, but especially for teenage girls and premenopausal women. Iron recommendations are supportive of a healthy blood volume and muscle mass and women are recommended to get 15 milligrams each day.
What does 15 mg a day look like? It is about 1 cup of a fortified breakfast cereal, 2 cups of beans or 2 ½ cups of boiled spinach.
An iron deficiency can present in different ways including fatigue, pale skin, rapid heart rate and brittle, concave-shaped nails. You are probably wondering how to incorporate more iron in your daily lifestyle. Animal sources of iron are most easily absorbed by our body, but you can get iron from plant sources too. Where were you raised: Greenville.
Tell Me About Your Family: I’m fortunate to have all of my family local. My father and step-mom live in Greenville and have been very supportive and active in opening Halo. My mother who you will see frequently at the store has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimers. The store has been such an amazing outlet for her to stay connected. She has been able to bond with me and my staff over a passion for interiors.
Dressy or Casual: Casual fashion because it’s hard to move furniture in heels and dresses.
Heels or Flats: Flats definitively! Heels are saved for special occasions when I can handle the back pain.
Signature Scent: Sweet Grace. I don’t wear a lot of perfume, but I do love my home smelling like sweet grace.
Person You Admire Dead or Alive and Why: I admire my dad. Every time I reflect on his life and what he has accomplished, I’m so proud to be his daughter.
Favorite Movie and Why: I don’t have a favorite movie but I’m a huge movie fan. When we can get to the movies, it’s always on a Sunday. I wear my yoga pants, T-shirt and ball-cap. I bring an Arby’s sandwich and box of popcorn in my purse and my husband and I go hoping no one recognizes us!
