SHOPPING STREET The first open-air shopping center in Portugal

W

hat may seem like just a normal shopping street is actually a visionary 1950s’ project developed by architect Raul Chorão Ramalho for Lisbon City Council and now a listed architectural monument. With shops, cafés and patisseries, it was the very first shopping center in the country. You could buy just about anything here, from petrol by the litre to haberdashery, providing the local residents with everything they needed right on their doorstep. On each side of the street, two symmetrical buildings were built with the shopping galleries on ground level and flats above. The shop facades are decorated with tiles designed by one of Portugal’s most renowned ceramicists, Querubim Lapa, and nothing was left to chance. Come rain or shine, you’ll always be protected from the elements and able to shop in comfort, because though it’s open-air there’s cover when you need it. Change your routine, head over to Restelo and take a stroll around a historical piece of Portuguese modernist architecture.
