É no belíssimo Jardim de Inverno do Teatro Municipal São Luiz que a encontro. Maria Vlachou, directora de comunicação do teatro, fala um português quase perfeito. Mal sabia esta grega de olhos e cabelos claros, que um dia iria trocar Ioannina por Lisboa. Veio por amor há 15 anos e por cá ficou. “Os cafés aqui são como na Grécia, é como estar em casa” diz, apaixonada pela zona do Chiado. Nunca se esquecerá da vitória Grega em 2004. E se pudesse trazia cá o Teatro Nacional da Grécia para representar Antígona. Quem sabe… I meet her in the beautiful Winter Garden of the Teatro Municipal São Luiz. Maria Vlachou, the theatre’s head of PR, speaks near perfect Portuguese. Little did this fair-haired Greek realise that one day she would leave Ioannina for Lisbon. She came out of love 15 years ago and stayed. “The cafés here are like the ones in Greece” she says, passionate about Chiado. She’ll never forget Greece’s victory in 2004, or the group of kids who attended a ballet by Pina Bausch. If she could, she’d bring over the Greek National Theatre to play Antigone. Who knows…
ROSALINA
Rosalina Machado orgulha-se de ter assistido ao florescimento do Chiado desde os anos 80, viu “as esplanadas a nascer e as ruas a ganhar vida”. A zona foi sendo reconstruída com requinte, embelezou-se “o antigo com vestes modernas”. Foi por isso que aqui fundou a Ogilvy, para juntar a criatividade à história, bem no coração de Lisboa. E é aqui que em 2009 abraça um ousado desafio, dar uma nova vida ao famoso restaurante Belcanto. É com entusiasmo que fala nas histórias que por lá se passaram, Rosalina promete deixar o espaço contá-las, enquanto se torna palco de novas. Rosalina Machado is proud of having seen Chiado flourish since the 1980s, watching “the pavement cafés open and the streets fill with people”. The area was rebuilt with style, embellishing “the old with new clothes”. That was why she founded Ogilvy, to ally creativity with history right in the heart of Lisbon. And it was here in 2009 that she embraced a daring challenge: to give the famous Belcanto restaurant a new lease of life. She enthuses about the stories the place has to tell while becoming the stage for new ones.

Encontro o senhor atrás do balcão atendendo os clientes, com um olhar sorridente, por entre centenas de botões. “Vim para esta rua em garoto (1940), vim emprestado e depois o patrão não me deixou ir embora”. José dos Reis Barreiro, hoje com 84 anos, é o dono das duas retrosarias Nardo, e ainda se lembra dos anos de ouro da Rua da Conceição, quando havia modistas, quando se ia fazer ginástica ao Ateneu, quando a loja se enchia de “aprendizas” e “ficava cliente para sempre”. “Não é fácil estar atrás do balcão, é preciso ser-se bom e ter um grande coração, é como a Vida”. Assim é o Sr. Reis. I find him behind the counter, serving customers with a smile in his eyes, amid hundreds of buttons. “I came here as a kid (1940) to help for a while but the boss wouldn’t let me leave.” José dos Reis Barreiro, now 84, owns both Nardo haberdasheries, and he still recalls the golden years of Rua da Conceição, when the shop filled with “apprentices” and “customers remained loyal”. “It’s not easy serving people; you have to be nice and kind, it’s just like life.” That’s Senhor Reis for you. con vida baiX A & CHIADO · 27
