Lena
Começou por ser uma cara conhecida no Bairro Alto quando fazia parte da equipa dos Três Pastorinhos, bar que nos anos 80 concentrava toda a nata da vanguarda. Depois, em 1993, abriu a sua loja/atelier, numa esquina da Rua da Atalaia. É ali que se revê. “Só me identifico com um sítio assim, onde se junta a vida diurna e a nocturna”, diz Lena Aires, “e estar aqui permite-me ter uma certa qualidade de vida, é um espaço com um atendimento personalizado, muitas vezes com hora marcada, noutro lugar isto não seria possível.” She became well-known in Bairro Alto when working at Três Pastorinhos, the 80s bar where all the cream of the avant-garde used to meet. Later, in 1993, she opened her own shop/studio, on a corner on Rua da Atalaia. And that is where she is able to reflect on things. “ I can only identify with a place like this, where there’s no distinction between night and day,” says Lena Aires, “and being here allows me a certain quality of life; there’s a personal touch here that doesn’t exist anywhere else.”
Jaime
Ainda hoje, há muitos clientes do seu antigo restaurante que passam na Ginginha das Gáveas para visitar o senhor Jaime Santos. Desde 1974 que era poiso de muita gente, incluindo da vida artística e intelectual. Todos sentem saudades de A Trave, que fechou em 1999. Em 2002 teve a ideia de abrir uma casa com ginginha de Óbidos na mesma rua. Não está arrependido. Diz que “não era capaz de viver sem este bairro”. Gosta dos novos clientes e do ambiente jovem. “Sinto-me muito feliz aqui”, diz, “ainda é das zonas mais aprazíveis de Lisboa.” Even today many of his old customers from A Trave still drop into Ginginha das Gáveas to say hello. Opened in 1974, it had been a popular watering hole for many, artists and intellectuals included and is still missed today. In 2002, he opened a place selling cherry brandy from Óbidos in the same street. And has no regrets. He says that “he couldn’t live without this neighbourhood”. He likes the new customers and the young atmosphere. “I’m really happy here,” he says, “it is still one of the best areas of Lisbon.”
Natacha
Foi há doze anos que Natacha Fontinha escolheu o Bairro Alto para trabalhar, mas pertenceu à grande movimentação dos anos 80 que tinha nesta zona o seu núcleo duro, por isso há muito tempo que a vemos por aqui. Actualmente, é conhecida por estar à frente da Bad Bones Tatoo. Apesar de sempre ter trabalhado com moda, é o mundo das tatuagens que a apaixona. Adora o Bairro Alto. “Tenho pena que o domingo seja pouco animado por aqui”, diz, “devia ser dinamizado, assim como outros dias, que podiam ter comércio aberto até mais tarde. O bairro não é só para beber copos e jantar fora!” It is 12 years since Natacha Fontinha first started working in Bairro Alto, but she was part of that 80s movement that made it its centre, so has been coming here for many years. She is currently the owner of Bad Bones Tatoo. Despite always working in fashion, her passion is tattoos. She loves Bairro Alto. “It’s a shame that Sundays are so lifeless here,” she says, “they should be more like other days, with shops open until late.
