Dona Maria Arlete was literally born for stardom. With her girlish air she has appeared on magazine covers and TV and even nostalgically recalls being named ‘Queen of Lisbon’ in a local beauty contest.

lthough her shop has no name, it was baptized the “loja dos pezinhos” (foot shop) due to a mat with footprints on it outside the door. Located in Travessa Fiéis de Deus, it is here that the faithful come in search of the talents of one of Bairro Alto’s most charismatic personalities. A Mecca of vintage clothing, even for non-aficionados, the shop was born on the premises of the workshop belonging to her husband Ni, as she lovingly refers to him, and almost has the air of a museum to herself. You’ll find something of everything, from the dresses with which she created a furore in her younger years, to what is said to be Queen Dona Amélia’s hat, not to mention books, cooking utensils, decorative items and fashion accessories, among other things. If you can’t find something, ask and Dona Maria Arlete will get it for you! With her contagious energy, and a touching sweetness, not even the rags in the shop look old. She puts on her own make-up everyday and creates her own patterns, most of which are made from existing models. A hairdresser by profession for 30 years, she was fortunate enough to know António Variações closely, so it can be said that where the head goes, the body follows! •
