PATRIARCAL A WELL-HIDDEN TREASURE Those wandering through the Jardim do Príncipe Real have no idea that below their feet stands an under ground marvel that can be accessed by a flight of steps. And once you’ve descended what you’ll find is a reservoir built between 1860 and 1864 to supply the precious liquid to Lisbon downtown area. The reservoir (Reservatório da Patriarcal) was designed in 1856 by the French engineer Charles Mary.
