Class of 1973 Kay Humphries Maddox khm1222@gmail.com Even though our 40th reunion was not well attended, those of us who were present had a great weekend. KAY HUMPHRIES Maddox joined CATHERINE WARD Harkey, MARY NELL ROGERS Brandt, PEGGY KELLEY Lancaster, LEILANI RICE Fisher and FRAN DUQUETTE Davis at Gerhardt’s restaurant on Friday night where we enjoyed catching up on each other’s lives. It was good to see EMILY JONES Rushing for lunch at Converse on Saturday. Emily is still living in Birmingham, AL, and retired from The Community Foundation for Greater Birmingham. CATHERINE WARD Harkey is semi-retired from her 20 years as Director of Church Music at three area churches, but is currently Director of Hand Bells Choirs at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC where she and husband, Henry, have lived since she finished graduate school in 1975. But the big news from her is that she has a beautiful granddaughter, Brooke, who is now six months old. Brooke’s dad, Jon and mom, Jill, live in Atlanta, GA. The younger Harkey son, Chris, lives and works in Charlotte, NC. Catherine said, “I am very much looking forward to our 45th reunion in four years and hope to see everyone there.” FRAN DUQUETTE Davis is living in Inman, SC, and grows organic vegetables on her farm. LEILANI RICE Fisher has been retired from teaching music in the Spartanburg public schools for a few years now but keeps busy in the Spartanburg Repertory Company and as an officer in her music club. PEGGY KELLY Lancaster just retired from teaching school last spring so she has much more time to devote to her grandchildren each day. MARY NELL ROGERS Brandt and husband, Bucko, still love living in Spartanburg, SC where he is happily practicing law. Mary Nell said, ”Mississippi Mud may still flow in my veins, but Carolina is home!” She missed much of the

reunion last year since daughter, Rogers, was getting married. Three of her children are living and working in Spartanburg, SC while their youngest child just moved to Asheville, NC. Mary Nell’s oldest daughter, Cate, and her husband, Aaron, are parents to Winnie (6), who is the first grandchild. Kay Maddox is enjoying being retired after 38 years teaching music. She and husband, Bob, embarked on an adventure in military life in 1981 and lived in many wonderful places. Bob retired from the Air Force but still flies for Delta Air Lines. They have moved back to Spartanburg, SC where they are both staying busy working on their new house when not traveling to spend time with their two sons and grandchildren. Son Aaron, and his wife, Laura, are parents to Garret (13) and Olivia (3) and live in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Their younger son, Robert and his wife, Bridget, have one daughter, Ainsley (3) and live in Lexington Park, MD. MARTHA “MOTT” RYAN Bramblett just retired last June after 35 years from public school teaching in Spartanburg, SC where she raised her two sons. RICHARD SIMMONS is enjoying retirement but still sings as a cantor at his church and for local ball games in Winston Salem, NC. He has been married to the same wonderful woman for almost 39 years. MARY PAPADIS Koutroulias can’t let her music connection go completely even though she has retired as a public school music teacher in Spartanburg, SC. Her church position keeps her actively involved in music. She and husband, Stathe, have been married for 38 years and raised their three children in Spartanburg, SC. Now she is enjoying her five month old grandchild. MELISSA PARHAM Musgrove reports actually using her Psychology degree for many years in vocational rehabilitation. Now she is doing something she never expected to do - an interiorscaper who provides plants for commercial customers. After working in the field for 10 years, she has owned the business since 2008. Melissa was widowed in 2012 but has her two college

age children to keep her busy. Daughter, Cade, is a senior at University of Alabama, and son, Rawls, is a sophomore as Mississippi State University. RUTH “TEM” DICKSON Dalton lives in Gastonia, NC, where she is teaching elementary school music. However, she is contemplating retirement in the near future. Her three sons are scattered all over the country. Ben and his wife live in San Diego, CA, and have two children, Maddox and Marlo; Nathan and his wife are living in New Orleans, LA; and Martin is living in Raleigh, NC, where he enjoys the single life. MARY GWATHMEY Michaux has lived in Greensboro, NC, since 1985 where she has worked for the Center for Creative Leadership as their telecom guru. For the past year she has been working part-time and is contemplating retirement in the near future. Her daughter, Megan, has two precious children, Hunter (5) and Lily (2), and is expecting a third in June. SUSAN MARRASH Minnerly is still living in Charleston, WV, and is a tenured full Professor of Theater at West Virginia State University. She reports that her life is good and she loves her job. Her husband, Doug, is semi-retired and keeps busy as a part-time minister at a small Presbyterian church nearby. It gives him time to spend with son, Nathan (18). RUTH GARVEY Horger shared a “small world” story from a recent beach trip to Hilton Head, SC. She and her husband were riding bikes when they passed another couple. The other lady said, “Ruth, I think we know each other from Converse College.” It turned out to be Ruth’s roommate from her sophomore year, CAROL DAVENPORT Dunst. ALIDA MCILVAIN Haslett is leading a very busy life in Bryn Mawr, PA, where she and husband, John, raised their four children. She continues to paint as well as design framing and matting in the gallery where she works. You can find her (Continued)
