A WORD FROM OUR

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Members, Patrons, and Community Leaders, Welcome to Continuo Arts! This book is designed to provide a thorough picture of the many opportunities available to you, your family, and our communities at large. As you peruse through our various program offerings, I hope you soon realize that there is a place for everyone at Continuo Arts, whether young or old, experienced or novice. Our Conservatory structure is designed to offer a comprehensive platform of musical education and artistic experiences that will enrich your lives, further your dreams, and create life-long memories. A relentless commitment to excellence is what makes Continuo Arts stand apart and ensures continued performance opportunities and collaborations of the highest standard. From serving as Choirs-in-Residence in Carnegie Hall to performing world premieres for Disney Theatrical at The Paper Mill Playhouse; from historic firsts in the Sistine Chapel to world tours in Greece, Italy, Ireland, Vatican City, and the Czech Republic, there is no place like Continuo! Our vocal and instrumental Conservatory students receive instruction of the highest caliber. Young artists seeking a professional performance track participate in both the week-long and year-long programs of The Minuetto Music Festival. Broadway & Beyond offers workshops, shows, masterclasses, and a summer intensive program for Triple-Threats from far and wide! How is this all possible? It takes motivated members, inspired staff, board leadership, committed patrons, community partners, and YOU… so welcome to Continuo! We believe in the power of music, arts and education; we encourage both individual and corporate achievement. We understand the importance of family and support intergenerational programs that provide a forum for families to participate together – for the young to inspire the old, for the old to mentor the young. We know that our culture defines us so we are committed to enriching that culture and to collaborating with other organizations and community leaders. Together, we are dedicated to making a difference. Thank you for joining us! With you as a member, patron, sponsor, concert goer… oh, the places we will go! Sincerely,

Candace Wicke Candace Wicke, DMA Founder, President, & Executive Director

WHY MUSIC?

“Music: 1.) increases intelligence, and 2.) is a basic life skill, like being able to march to a beat.” “Learning music in early childhood stimulates the brain for ‘optimal brain development.’”

Dr. Elizabeth Carlton

Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz

“‘Vocal range’ and ‘pitch matching’ are teachable – not innate – skills, provided children have been exposed continually, starting at an early age, to music making.”

Dr. Debra Hedden

“An estimated 42.6 million Americans regularly sing in choruses today. More than 1 in 5 households have at least one singing family member, making choral singing the most popular form of participation in the performing arts for both adults and children.” Chorus America (2009 Chorus Impact Study)

THE CONTINUO ARTS FOUNDATION | 3

We believe that music is of primary importance to the survival of civilization, to the health of society, and to insuring the highest quality of life. The experience of music allows us to participate in the universal creative process, open hearts and minds, awaken feelings and bring delight and joy.

4 | THE BIG PICTURE

“For any new arts organization today to survive for years – let alone achieve the notable successes of Continuo Arts – is as remarkable as it is commendable. The lives you have enriched with your dedication to excellence and musical meaning are found not only on the stage in performers but also in the audiences who have been fortunate to experience your music-making. There is much to celebrate, especially the prospect of what the future holds for The Continuo Arts Foundation.” - Gary Fry, composer “I remember when this idea was only a dream. What an amazing job you and your team have done creating a world-class foundation for the promotion of the performing arts and music education. It’s no secret that you have provided inspiring performance opportunities in world-class venues for scores of singers and instrumentalists for many years. I applaud your vision and stamina.” - Mark Hayes, composer

“I have watched your organization grow tremendously and feel a special bond and honor to have been a small part of it. Each and every one of you should acknowledge yourselves as artists in the truest sense of the word, and you should be proud to be authors of your artistic endeavors. Continuo Arts has flourished beyond any of our wildest expectations, and the organization is really only beginning. Since all of you have covered this immense amount of ground in such a short time, just imagine what could be possible in the future!” - Stephen Edwards, composer THE CONTINUO ARTS FOUNDATION | 5

SING

“Safely home again, I want to write and thank you all most cordially for what I felt was some splendid singing— I think the warmth of the audience response at the end of the concert spoke for itself. Rehearsals went smoothly, and I am indeed grateful for your close attention and responsiveness. The performance had just that bit extra, which we always hope for. A special word to the children’s choir: you were great! Thank you. What better than a fine performance in a fine concert hall, and Carnegie Hall is assuredly one of the world’s finest. I hope you were uplifted by the experience, as I was. With all the best wishes, John Rutter”

EMBRACING THE CHALLENGE OF

EXCELLENCE

“Music unites all qualities: it can exalt us, divert us, cheer us up, or break the hardest of hearts with the softest of its melancholy tones. But its principal task is to lead our thoughts to higher things, to elevate, even to make us tremble… The musical art often speaks in sounds more penetrating than the words of poetry, and takes hold of the most hidden crevices of the heart… Song elevates our being and leads us to the good and the true.” Friedrich Nietzsche

MUSIC FOR THE

YOUNG AT HEART “It seems like yesterday when someone told me about a group of singing seniors so its hard to believe I've been involved with Seniors Sing and the Continuo Arts Foundation for nine years! I have loved every minute of rehearsals, gigs, Holiday and Spring concerts, and the wonderful friends I have made. Performing at our annual Cabaret has brought out so much confidence that I think one day Candace is going to take my microphone away!” Angela Schneller, Seniors Sing

I’m a theater kid. I belt show tunes when I’m home alone. I wait weeks to see my costume and eat in it when I finally get it. I show up at the theater an hour early just so I can have some mirror space and walk around on the empty stage. I doodle lyrics on all my school papers and highlight all my lines the day I get my script. I keep all my show bills and obsess over Broadway. Some people call it crazy… That’s what I am:

It was the vehicle for me to get back into singing and provided me the opportunity to sing with my daughter Katie on many occasions. COLLEGE PREP

@ CONTINUO

ARTS

Most Continuo Arts students do not pursue a music career, but membership at Continuo Arts opens countless collegiate doors for all of our students; and we walk with them every step of the way!

DID YOU KNOW Despite the major, colleges highly value participation in the arts. In fact, in today’s climate of student isolation due to technology, participation in the arts indicates a student’s ability to collaborate with and relate to others.

UNPARALLELED OPPORTUNITY The professional opportunities available with Continuo Arts, b o t h at Carnegie Hall and internationally, will set your child’s resumé apart. When you are able, participation in these experiences is highly encouraged. Please note that these are professional, byinvitation-only, prestigious performance opportunities that are made available exclusively to our members at Continuo Arts. 22 | COLLEGE PREP
