will be the last pandemic-constrained content market, we’re looking at an environment in Asia that’s all over the place. And that’s not just about the uneven post-pandemic re-opening (or not, as in Shanghai’s latest lockdowns). Trying to choose definitive industry trends not riddled with ifs and buts? Good luck with that. But good things (for some at least) are happening, topped by the manic scramble for Korean drama rights that’s putting pressure on buyers without Netflix-deep pockets. This means finding alternatives is even more urgent. Thai? Indonesian? Japanese? Indian? It’s starting to happen, but the next Squid Game-style phenomenon out of anywhere but Korea? Not yet. If the formats business in Asia seems troubled, there are still bright spots. We’re seeing high-excitement over Project Runway Thailand – the first time the Fremantle format is being adapted for Thailand – and watching closely what the show’s May premiere will do for newly acquired digital terrestrial channel JKN18. There’s still high-energy in India around scripted adaptations. At the same time, formats volume in Asia is the lowest it has been in at least five years. Blame the pandemic. Why not? Everyone else is. ContentAsia’s ongoing Formats Outlook indicates the slide started well before the pandemic. What we’ll be doing in the next few months in the run up to the ContentAsia Summit in August is figuring out how big the $ pie actually is – and where most of the money is going. Meanwhile, we’re watching streamers in Asia

Formats in Asia

Asia’s appetite for formats has plummeted in the last four years, although there is still lively interest in scripted formats for markets with fierce streaming competition and game shows remain a favourite genre. THAILAND Thailand ranked third by volume among 18 countries tracked in ContentAsia’s Formats Outlook 2021, with 21 titles on air/commissioned. Even so, this is a long way from the highs of 2018, when we recorded 70 titles, giving Thailand an unbroken record of the market with the most format titles in a year. While this had dropped to 51 in 2019, the volume still put Thailand in the top three spots. By 2020, volume had dropped to about 37 titles, but still Thailand maintained its position as one of Asia top three markets. The format of the moment is the first Thai adaptation of Fremantle’s Project Runway, scheduled to go on air in May this year as a tent pole property for JKN Global Media’s newly acquired digital free-TV channel JKN18. “We’re going to see the country’s top loveteam Kathryn and Daniel back on TV in romance drama 2 Good 2 Be True. We’re also bringing soon to primetime the much-awaited Darna, a drama about a simple lass turned female superhero. We’ve also welcomed 2022 with the Filipino adaptation of BBC’s Doctor Foster, entitled The Broken Marriage Vow, which we’ve partnered with streaming platform Viu on.”

Trends & Outlook 2022

“We’ve noticed more Asian slots opening up in various markets, a testament to the fact that content from Asian neighbors is embraced by local viewers, while it helps channels save on programming costs. There will also be more drama remake opportunities as clients look to shorten the development process. VOD platforms have changed the media landscape worldwide and we see that there is special focus on original content. As they move to create more “hyper local” content, we see a lot of co-production and line production projects and partnerships between the VOD players and local production companies.”

Trends & Outlook 2022 We are seeing an increased demand for Asian programming as more titles get localised and resonate with Asian viewers. These could be format sales or finished tape deals. There’s huge potential for scripted format adaptations and we’re actively engaging with partners, provided that the terms are favourable to both parties. As ever the need to scale down costs and find innovative ways to finance a project. E.g. MasterChef Singapore with Group M. Trends & Outlook 2022

“I expect there’ll be increased focus on local content. We’re making this a key part of our strategy in Asia by collaborating with local producers, such as 5Bricks to take its Tata & Kuma Tata and Kuma series to market. We’ve also partnered with iQIYI for Jonny Jetboy, an actionpacked kids’ series from Keith Chapman (PAW Patrol, Bob the Builder). The series will be produced by iQIYI, with WildBrain supervising development and production, and we’ll also handle global distribution and licensing business outside Greater China. Jonny Jetboy marks the first global Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City partnership for original China IP struck by our dedicated China team, which is focused on bringing new content and brand experiences to kids and families within and outside China. I also anticipate we’ll see more dynamic and agile partnerships. As such, we’re already exploring fresh ways of collaborating, such as on the fourth instalment of The Deep, a co-production with Australia’s A Stark Production and Snoopy in Space Singapore’s Infinite Studios, which has been put together with the support of partners, including Mediacorp, Super RTL, BBC, Family Channel and ABC. Iconic brands will continue being a major driver as having a built-in audience can help draw attention. Being home to iconic brands, such as Peanuts, Strawberry Shortcake, Inspector Gadget, Sonic, Fireman Sam, Polly Pocket and Teletubbies, gives us flexibility to offer great series that fit our partners’ evolving demands.” – Jennifer Oppenheimer, Sales Manager, Distribution, Asia-Pacific

Penetration of Connected TV’s over coming years and more seamless UI experiences will accelerate this trend. If travel is a barometer of consumer confidence and physical interconnectedness, then a rebound in economies and the attendant business ecosystem of travel and tourism is going to be exciting for all of us. A stand-alone streaming for Asia is not highly possible in the short run but not impossible in the long run considering the gradual and steady growth of appetite for Turkish content in Asia. We also are present in various territories with local partnerships such as in Pakistan in South Asia and Azerbaijan in CIS.

Productions We have an annual output of approximately 80 hours of fresh original productions. We are open to co-production and co-financing opportunities in Asia

Trends & Outlook 2022 Turkish dramas are highly consumed and loved across the globe, with universal themes that capture a global audience. We believe that territories in Asia that have already been consuming Turkish content will start exploring Turkish content even further and other territories will give more room to Turkish content. Similarly, we wish to introduce our content and co-produce content in Asia.” Salmi Gambarova, Business Development and Sales Operations Manager

TV5MONDE Asie and TV5MONDE Pacifique are both linear and on-demand channels. Their line ups are different and customised to each region they target. The subtitles are also available according to the feeds and the demographic they aim to.

Main focus in 2022

Trends & Outlook 2022

With another year under the socioeconomic impacts of the global pandemic, the convergence to a new technology-driven world will continue to amplify. The Video Industry will be facing another year of doubts and opportunities that would lead to significant changes. That will include mergers and acquisitions and disappearances of existing players, and the rising of new ones. Our focus will be to surf those waves and remain relevant to our partners and viewers.”

“As the streaming video industry matures and more players will compete for the same eyeballs, likely, the existing business models will also evolve to reach greater profitability. In Asia-Pacific, the current AVOD and SVOD business models will compete with a new dual-stream revenue scheme (Ads + Subs) and Freemium services. In the meantime, many of the current Pay-TV operators will try to shift to vMVPDs (virtual Multichannel Video Programming Distributors). It is Alexandre Muller, Managing Director Asia-Pacific becoming increasingly evident that streaming will ultimately take over traditional pay-TV a few years from now, especially in the most mature markets. The number of FAST (or Free AdSupported Streaming) channels is also likely to increase significantly. This increase will serve the need of many viewers to return to their old laid-back streaming habits, especially those equipped with Connected TV.”

All channels provided by TV5MONDE in this region are Pay-TV channels, and are advertising-free.

TV5MONDE Asia-Pacific channels are also available through a subscriptionbased TV everywhere service available on the company local website - apac. tv5monde.com - and via Apps free to download on the Google Play/Apple local stores.
