For love of the Lane Pitshanger Lane holds the Great British High Street competition’s London crown thanks to a campaign led by estate agent John Martin. Our Q&A is with his wife and business partner, Rhian Aubrey-Martin You were right at the heart of the campaign action, Rhian.

What memories stand out?

There are so many! First, there is the memory of John and me at home on a rainy August bank holiday Monday tweaking the GBHighSt application we had drafted with the Pitshanger Village Traders Association committee. The deadline was only the next day (Sep 1) and good job we got it finished, as the website crashed next morning.

My first tweet was also pretty exciting – I got into Twitter just for the competition and I love it!

The icing on the cake, though, has to be the announcement at the ceremony at Admiralty House – people talk about an electric atmosphere and I know now what they mean; there were tears and elation and I was shaking so much I struggled to type my tweet to let everyone know Pitshanger Lane had won!

Has the Lane changed since the campaign and the win?

During the campaign, John Martin Estates celebrated its 20th birthday which, for John and me, was some milestone.

Q&A

We have loved the Lane ever since we became a part of it and the campaign showed our passion for and commitment to the Lane. It also showed just how all the traders, residents and visitors feel about it. The week of the win saw everyone walking around with a sense of pride and achievement and it was a great lead up to Christmas.

Reports are that there has been an increase in footfall as a result of the campaign and the win, and that is exactly the result we were hoping for.

How much of the nitty-gritty of business at John Martin Estates do you get involved in?

Well, I have been involved from the beginning but as I was a solicitor in private practice, my dealings were limited to financial and legal matters. In the last few years, however, I have become much more involved, and you see me at the office most days.

John and I know our respective strengths – we are partners in every way and don’t have a problem spending so much time together. It’s not bad working with your best friend, you know!

Gunnersbury cafe closed EALING BROADWAY In last week’s issue we asked if anyone had used this ‘Order Online Pick Up Here’ facility at the Ealing Central Library. Well we decided to try it out for returning a parcel, and it did save us a bit of hassle.
