Why does your banner say Ealing people will be “walking and running themselves proud”?

Sport Relief is all about doing yourself proud: that’s by challenging yourself physically to do the distance (we’ve had people who started out in 2012 doing a mile and now run half marathons) and doing yourself proud by knowing the money you raise will help change lives.

Doing it for charity Ben Farmer is organising the Sport Relief Ealing Mile in Bunny Park, Hanwell, on 20 March. In our Q&A he explains why it’s worth it to take part (whether you decide to run, walk, skip or hop) Ben, you’re like, 17, why are you even doing this? Is Sport Relief part of your A-levels somehow?

I’m sure Sport Relief does count for something at school but it’s not really why I’m doing it.

The mile is such a simple event but it can have life-changing consequences for the people we help. Since our last Ealing Mile in 2014, Sport Relief’s money has enabled 190,000 children to attend school and 16,500 people get support to improve their mental health.

To be honest, I’m not sure why I do it, considering I’m pretty busy in Lower Sixth. Then again, it’s kind of what I do. Last summer in the middle of my GCSEs I ended up coordinating a collection of used textbooks for schools in Africa and UK charity shops – we ended up with over 3000 books!

How has the event changed over the years?

Sport Relief is actually a biannual event so our first one was back in 2008. I’ve helped on all of them, forcing my dad to sign off the paperwork to make it all

How do we get involved?

I’m glad you asked! It’s really simple: if you want to get involved in the Ealing Mile, just head over to the website, pay your entry fee and get fundraising!

The entry fee only covers the cost of putting on the event which means sponsorship is where it counts, with all the cash going to help disadvantaged people in the UK and Africa.

It may seem daunting asking for sponsorship but most people are up for supporting you. In 2014 we raised £13,000 for Sport Relief from sponsorship.

Across the mud PERIVALE Hundreds of runners turned up on Saturday for the Met League Horsenden Hill Cross Country race, where there was no shortage of cold weather and mud along the 8km route.

Photo at left by Catherine Gunnewicht shows the men’s race, which started 40min after the women’s race, the start of which was photographed by Darren LeRoy Halford (see below left).

Both Catherine and Darren are members of the Ealing, Southall and Middlesex Athletics Club (green and yellow vests), which is based at the Perivale Track.

Runners of all ages and abilities are welcome to join.

EALING BROADWAY Saturday evening on High Street, and the queue for cakes at Sowa Patisserie is practically going out the door. The Sowa Restaurant (next door) is reportedly the best Polish dining spot in town.

PITSHANGER According to Thames Water, work on Woodfield Road is expected to be completed on Tuesday, and the road duly reopened for E2 and E9 buses to resume their normal route through W5.
