participate, both in terms of individual satisfaction and team achievement.

Woods for teens Patrick Harrison has a plan to get your teenagers away from their screens and experiencing real-life outdoor thrills at his Woodland Basecamp. He explains why Horsenden Hill is just the place for this. It’s rather wild up Horsenden Hill. Is that why you like it as the location for Woodland Basecamp? In fact it is actually not very wild! It just feels wild because it is a 100 hectare low-managed woodland. This is in contrast to the rather over-managed, cleaned-up parks we are used to in London. Instead, during the Woodland Basecamp workshops we will be surrounded by thick woodland and undergrowth, quite unusual in London! The atmosphere created by this environment in

nature means we tend to get very absorbed in the activities without the distractions associated with city life. This is called “deep level learning” which allows the release of dopamine in the body, which is very conducive to personal development. Tell us about the 10 July Woodland Basecamp Open Day. We will make one simple unit, or “tower” structure out of poles with square and sheer lashing to show what the programme will feel like for those who

Q&A

What was your own teenagehood like? Do you think it takes a special type of person to enjoy being outdoors? I was a fairly mainstream teenager, who got frustrated with being pressurised to go for walks. I think even then I wanted the opportunity to do something really interesting outside but there wasn’t the choice or even the awareness of how many exciting learning options nature generates. I certainly don’t think it takes a special kind of person to love the outdoors. I have taken countless groups out where many of them have considered themselves to be indoors people, but who found very quickly that it was just not true. In fact, it can be quite a shock to the system! The outdoors is often portrayed as either bush-craft/survival skills or intellectual natural history. I find these a bit narrow, and prefer to view it as a place for community building. To make friendships and be ingenious! woodlandbasecamp.co.uk @BasecampInWood WoodlandBasecamp – Carlene Bender

When Stephanie visited EALING COMMON Wig-maker Stephanie McLean of Lightheaded Ltd was a visitor this month at the businesswomen-only The Athena Network’s monthly Ealing lunch at The Grange restaurant. Stephanie had the meeting in fits of giggles as she explained the process of making a theatrical wig. The more serious side of her business came through however as she received referrals from group members in touch with vulnerable and post-cancer women.
