How to attend Ealing Business Expo Online 2020

H

ave a look through this gentle guide to ensure you make the most of the time you spend with us at Expo 2020.

1. Where to start The Expo has been set up at ealingbizexpo.co.uk – click through to the special ‘Expo Day’ page to find the list of sessions, alongside the online stands.

As we go through the schedule, talks and sessions that have ended will be shaded out and the current part of the event will be highlighted so you know exactly where to click/tap to join in.

Most of the sessions will take place on Zoom, and some on Facebook. If for some reason you can’t access the Expo website, the pinned post on our Facebook page @ealingbizexpo will also be regularly updated.

The meeting links and passwords will also be sent by email the day before the start of the event. As long as you have registered for the event (via

Eventbrite), you will receive this email. It might be in your spam folder, though.

2. Speed networking There are five (5!) online speed networking sessions of 20 minutes each – but don’t feel pressured to attend all of them.

This style of networking is new to most people, but it’s not difficult – just join the session, and after the short welcome, you will automatically be placed in a breakout room to meet a new (or not so new) contact.

After one minute you’ll be switched to another room to meet and speak with a different person, and so on until the 20 minutes are up.

3. When to engage Some of the sessions will be open Zoom calls, and some are webinars. You are welcome to use the Chat feature to ask questions, comment on what’s going on (please be generous

with your positivity), or reply to someone else’s comment.

During the social media breaks, please do post something about the event.

Don’t forget to stop by the online stands to connect with local companies that you might like to do business with. Some of the exhibitors will be live at the other end of a Zoom link, others will be available by appointment.

4. In case of trouble It’s unlikely that we will get through 12 hours of an online Expo without any glitches. If there is a problem at our end, we will update Twitter first.

Tips for speed networking face-to-face but online

I

f you’ve never been speed networking online on Zoom, and you’re wondering how it all works, here are some suggestions that might come in handy before you join in any (or all?) of our five (5!) speed networking sessions over the two days of Expo 2020.

1. Practise Until you do it, you don’t actually know what it’s like. If you manage to read this article before the Expo, you can join in our Club Contactus meetups on Zoom on 5 and 12 October, 11am to 12noon. They are both free to attend. Search on Eventbrite to find the booking link.

2. Rename yourself Hover over your onscreen image to bring up the three

dots, and change your name to include the name of your company. For example “Carlene EalingBizExpo”.

3. Watch the time Remember to share the time allotted so that the other person gets a chance to speak. Use the time for a conversation rather than rattling off your one-minute pitch so you really connect.

4. Take notes When you meet so many people in a short space of time, it’s hard to keep track of everyone.

Write down their names and businesses.

5. If you get stuck Have some questions prepared e.g. “how did you find out about this event”? If all else fails there’s always the weather.

1. Show your brand colours A pull-up banner with your company logo is a good start, but you can go one step further by wearing your brand colours, or your company uniform if you have one. Just don’t leave your profile blank!

Be sure to follow up or else it’s all a waste of your time

f you manage to connect well with someone during the Expo, remember to follow up afterwards – connect on LinkedIn, or follow their accounts on Twitter and Facebook, or send them an individual email. As they say, the money is in the follow-up.

Because while you’re networking, you’re not selling.

You’re just talking. If there is going to be a sales process you can usually tell during the conversation. If there is going to be a sales process, it starts after the networking is finished.

And remember, getting the other person to talk is still the most important thing.

Do you remember the story of a networking experiment where

a businessman was asked to sit next to another man on a plane, but not divulge anything about himself?

Everytime the airplane passenger asked the businessman something about himself, the businessman would swiftly redirect the conversation back to the passenger.

When interviewed about his flight afterwards, the passenger said it was the best flight ever, the eight hours passed in a flash, etc.

They may not remember the words that were said, but they’ll remember the way you made them feel. Keep aiming for the good feeling.

The last time there was a ‘Contactus Ealing’ magazine was Issue No.20 back in Nov-Dec 2016. A painting of the Ealing cinema building site was on the cover, which is interesting because the hoardings from the site have only just come down as we were going to press (see pics above left).

You’ve been involved with Ealing Business Expo since 2016, when you first exhibited at the Acton Business Expo, and then as an exhibitor and speaker in 2017, and in 2020 as a headline sponsor (see advert on page 22) and speaker. From what you’ve seen, how has the B2B business landscape changed in Ealing?

A: I really like the community aspect that the Expo has created and has played a part of in and around Ealing.

I have recognised a lot more collaboration in Ealing over the years, with Ealing entrepreneurs and business owners coming together to network frequently.

And lastly, what are your top two tips for making a website work in 2020?

A: 1. Consider who the website is for (your target customers) and what you want them to do upon visiting your website.

2. Keep it secure: Get SSL certificates, make sure passwords are strong and have frequent website backups.

With Zoom, Teams, Skype, Remo and all the rest, there’s been no shortage of opportunities to get networking online. The great majority of business-owners see networking as their most effective marketing tool.

Most of us prefer meeting up face-to-face of course, but until government regulations allow, and until people feel more comfortable about crowds gathering in-person, we have to make the most of online.

Options for business networking include membership groups, pay-as-you-go networking, and free meetups.
