5 ways to rejuvenate your business Maybe you miss the thrill of the startup phase of your business, or you’d just like to spark some enthusiasm among your staff. Here are a few ideas to make things interesting again 1. Spring clean There’s no other way to say it – tidying up, filing away, and throwing away; even a fresh coat of paint on your office wall can work wonders.

2. Outsource something So many business-owners feel a sense of relief, gratitude and release once they let someone else do what they’re no good at.

For example stop trying to do all your own leaflet distribution.

Or all your cold-calls. It may not be as expensive as you think to pay a specialist company to do these humdrum tasks. Or, you may find the cost is well worth it.

3. Add a product or service Have your customers grown used to you providing the same old product or service? Maybe

think about introducing a related add-on. Remember to publicise your new offer, however, so that your loyal clients won’t miss out.

4. Rebrand At a talk at the Ealing Business Forum last year, Richard Palfreeman, CEO of Northfields Estate Agents, gave his top tip: rebrand every four years. That could include a revised logo, a new slogan, new website or new marketing theme or project.

Smaller firms may not be able to afford a full rebrand, but make sure something about your business looks new.

5. Collaborate & partner Imagine chugging along in your business, and along comes another business that completely fills in the gap around yours.

For example, for a media buyer looking to place clients’ adverts, the perfect fit would be the local newspaper. There’d be no competition, only mutual support. So look out for that kind of natural synergy that makes working with another business sometimes so beautiful.

ilingual children are nearly the norm in Ealing – and here’s a nursery that caters for the local French-English families.

Les Jardins d’Emile is set to open its first UK branch in Hanwell this spring, located close to the Hanwell Library on Cherington Road.

Founder Emmanuelle Emmanuelle: Guillaudeux – a former Femme strong ethics Entrepreneure Brittany nominee – set up the first Les Jardins d’Emile (named after her third child) in Rennes in 2009, based on strong ethical and organic principles, for example: “to smoothly discover community life”; and where the use for example of chemicals and Wi-Fi is limited.

Italian catering Amalfi Caffe is known on Mattock Lane for its Italian coffees and fresh home-cooked food served up by resident Italian chef Sante Cerbone.

The cafe’s owner, Gabriela Flores is now expanding the business into catering, offering “hot food or cold platters, ideal for parties or meetings”.

What is happening at Dickens Yard

I

n our Jan/Feb issue focusing on startup businesses, we wondered what was the plan for the 100,000 sq ft of commercial space at the new Dickens Yard development in Ealing Broadway.

We didn’t manage to get a comment from Dickens Yard developers St George in time for that story, but then a few days later St George hosted the monthly Ealing Business Forum networking meeting at the site, and we were able to get some answers for our questions: Q: When will the 23 commercial units be leased and ready for business?

A: “When building work is complete in 2018. The retailers who are right for Dickens Yard in 2015 may not be right in 2018 when the building is done.”

Q: What type of shops will be “preferred”?

“Aspirational brands. Think high

fashion retail and white-cloth table-clothed restaurants.”

“A card shop wouldn’t do very well here.”

“Nor a pub.”

Q: Is there any space provided for smaller businesses e.g. a popup space or market hall?

A: “There’s no provision for subsidised smaller business space. Market Square will be available for outdoor stalls and pop-up events.”

Q: How will you get footfall to the area (according to campaigners Save Ealing’s Centre, there is no history of shops at Dickens Yard, and no through-traffic to benefit whoever sets up shop there).

A: “Once we get the shops, people will come.

“Additionally, there will be 300 underground public parking places alongside the 300 residents’ parking, which will also draw shoppers.”

Cupcake heaven on the Lane

A

t 90 Pitshanger Lane, just about midway on the sunny north side, is Cinnamon cafe.

It’s mum-friendly, child-friendly, dog-friendly and rather importantly when it comes to Ealing: cupcake-friendly.

Owners Rachael and Dan Scott have been running the cafe since March 2013, and are proud of their menu packed with award-winning coffee, specialty loose leaf tea, milkshakes, smoothies, and a wide range of fresh food dishes.

But it is the amazing cupcakes, homemade by local supplier Terry Norris, and the “bespoke Cinnamon and Orange Cake exclusive to Cinnamon” that gets the cafe the most attention in Pitshanger village and beyond.

hen it comes to business networking, it’s important to find the “tribe” that suits your personality. You also need to make sure you can get enough business from whichever group you decde to stick with.

So for example it doesn’t make sense to only meet up with local mums, as cosy as that feels, if your business is geared to office workers in the City. If it’s a social group you’re after, that’s fine. But if you’re doing serious business networking, it has to make business sense.

On the other hand, don’t give up if after one meeting you feel completely out of depth. Give it another try, or maybe visit another group.

How to maximise #EalingHour

S

ince I started running Let’s Tweet Together hands-on Twitter classes, I started looking more closely at how local businesses use Twitter, and specifically during Ealing Hour on a Tuesday night.

Ealing Hour, which has run from 8-9pm every Tuesday since March 2014 under the hashtag #EalingHour, is a great way for local businesses to spread their message.

Here are a few suggestions about how to make the most of the hour: 1. Type in the hashtag.

Just because you’ve tweeted between 8pm and 9pm on a Tuesday doesn’t mean you’ve taken part in Ealing Hour, unless you include the letters exactly like this: #EalingHour 2. Click on the hashtag.

That way, you get to see all the discussions taking place during the hour, and you can choose which one(s) to join.

3. Retweet and follow others.

This helps to spread the reach of Ealing Hour, and increases the chances that others will retweet and follow you back.

4. Draft tweets beforehand.

Make sure you have your own messages to send out every

5. But be live online.

6. Remember to refresh your feed. Messages can come in at a frantic rate, and you don’t want to miss a thing!

ollowing on the success of her Food Truck Friday in the Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre, Kate McKenzie a.k.a Eat Me Drink Me has now launched a twice-monthly Sunday food market.

The first Sunday event on March 22 saw the pavement in front of Ealing Town Hall filled with food stalls selling a variety of dishes including Venezuelan arepas, Mexican burritos, and Jamaican jerk chicken. Vegan food was also on offer.

Other popular stalls featured Pitshanger/South Ealing butchers Hook and Cleaver, Pitshanger’s Charlie’s Fruit Bowl, and Northfields’ Mags Petite Fleur. #EMDMSundays are on every first and third Sundays, 11am to 4pm, with covered seating, Kate: “delighted” children’s crafts, and live music.

The working life of a freelancer Working as a freelancer has its pros and cons.

Esther Needle highlights some of the cons 1. Nobody knows your name – because you’re always signed in to the company server as “Freelance1” (or 2, 3, 4 etc).

2. You get all the technical, rubbish jobs that nobody wants to do. And then when you mess up you don’t get booked again for six months.

3. The other freelancers pretend you don’t exist – competition is fierce.

4. You never get to attend staff meetings, team lunches, going down the pub after work. None of the benefits; all of the work.

5. When you have a work-from-

home day they demand to call you on your landline so there’s no chance of nipping to the shops.

6. When a permanent job comes up, nobody tells you.

It’s not like you could take it anyway. The reason why you’re freelance is why you’re still freelance.

7. It goes without saying that you don’t get sick pay, pensions, paid holidays, birthday cards...

8. Of course you don’t get Easter, Christmas and summer holidays off to spend with your children. No – that’s when the full-time staff get holidays.

Window glory

A

cton-based stained glass artist Zoe Angle, of Angle Glass, is working on the project of a lifetime: a full-sized window to honour the life of Winston Churchill.

Zoe explains how she became involved in the project: “Emma Blount of Blount Stained Glass won the commission, and she asked me to help with the glass painting of the window.”

“Stained glass painting is my speciality. I use to be the stained glass painter for Goddard and Gibbs Studios, which was the largest stained glass company in England,” she adds.

The Winston Churchill Memorial window is to be installed in May at St Martins Church in Oxfordshire, the church where Churchill is buried.

Zoe describes it as “a two-light window and tracery depicting St Martin and St Alban and the life of Winston Churchill.”
