FROM TIM HARLOW, 2014 NACC PRESIDENT Your mission…should you choose to accept it. I loved the show “Mission: Impossible” as a kid. I know I’m dating myself here—some of you probably didn’t even know that Mission: Impossible existed before Tom Cruise. Trust me: it was epic. But regardless of the hairstyles you associate with the secret agents, the premise is the same. The agency sends a super secret tape player to the secret agent, who listens to the instructions (usually involving a dangerous trek to some communist country), and then the tape self-destructs so that no one else can ever find out what the super secret mission is. You’ve been given a mission. And based on the fact that you’re here, you’ve probably already accepted. Some of you accepted your orders years ago. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20). Military leaders talk of “mission creep”— a military action launched with a clear objective that over time loses focus and morphs into a protracted, watered-down, costly effort that drains resources without producing worthwhile impact. Can we just be honest? Sometimes in the trenches of ministry, it’s hard to keep the main thing the main thing. When you’re surrounded by opinionated people, it’s hard to keep the boss’ instructions at the front of your mind. Sometimes we just get weary and stuck in a rut. It happens to the best of us. Well, consider this week your mission refresher course. I’m so thrilled you’re here. I need this every bit as much as you do. We’re going back to square one, back to the explosive tape player, and we’re going to remember what got us started on this crazy journey in the first place. And this is what I hope you’ll keep in mind: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). My prayer for you this week is that you would receive power. That’s why we’re here, away from our ministries, gathered together like this. We’ve got a job to do, but we can’t do it without the Holy Spirit’s power working through us. I’m praying that you would be filled this week. The worship, the relationships, the teaching, the times of rest and meditation — everything this week is about facilitating a chance for you to hear from God and be refreshed by His Spirit. With His power working in us, I know that every one of us will walk out of here equipped and ready to RE:Mission our churches, our ministries, and our very lives.

The NACC Main Session Worship team is led by Denise Harlow from Parkview Christian Church (Orland Park, IL) and includes Adam Ader, John Bretzlaff , Kim Bretzlaff , Debbie Burk, Tommy Carreras, Heather Follett, Rachel Harlow Harris, Tavarius “Varo” Johnson, Joy Latka, Barry Luchene, Chuck Mitchell, Sharay Reed, Barry Tegel – some of whom are pictured above in a recent Parkview Christian Church service. Hundreds of young women, many of whom are domestic victims and runaways, are held captive by organized crime, gangs, drug dealers, lies, abuse and threats. They are forced into prostitution and moved into major metropolitan areas, including Chicago. They are typically tattooed by their captors so that if they are ever found, they can be tracked back and returned to their ‘owners.’ These tattoos are often bar codes that can be scanned with smart phones. A cover-up tattoo can cost hundreds of dollars, and there are hundreds of girls being removed from these horrible situations every year. INK 180 is a 501 (c)3 organization that is dedicated to working to end the reminders of a life scarred from human-trafficking and gang violence. We appreciate those individuals and organizations that choose to support our efforts and continue changing lives. The ministry activities of INK 180 are entirely funded by donations.

COLLEGE FAIR Tuesday 8:30 PM - 10:00 PM Wabash Lobby Join several Christian colleges and universities at the NACC College Fair after the Tuesday Evening Main Session. Coordinated by National Bible Bowl www.biblebowl.com Participating colleges and universities include Central Christian College of the Bible, Great Lakes Christian College, Hope International University, Johnson University, Kentucky Christian University, Mid-Atlantic Christian University, Milligan College, Ozark Christian College, Point University, and more.

SERVICE PROJECTS ADOPT AN UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUP This is an initiative that began at the 2011 NACC in partnership with NACC, Team Expansion, and Restoration Revolution. U4theU is a special initiative aimed at changing forever the spiritual destinies of people groups and cities that previously have remained hidden from the gospel. Learn about Unreached Peoples and cities, select one for which you can pray, and ask God to help you make a difference among the people group or city that you choose. Located in Wabash East Lobby, near Room 108.

CARE FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Christian Churches Disability Ministry and volunteers from Indianapolis are providing on-site care for children (1 -18 y/o) with disabilities while their caregivers attend the NACC evening main sessions. Stop by the Respite Room (Room 110) or the CCDM Booth 1532 to offer a hand or pick up information on how to set up a respite care area at your church.

BUNDLE MUCH NEEDED PERSONAL CARE ITEMS Partner with FAME to bundle much needed personal care items to be sent to the underserved throughout the world. Personal Care Kits containing bar soap, washcloths, shampoo, toothpaste, and toothbrushes will be assembled as an ongoing service project during the convention. You can help at the FAME Booth 1513 in the Exhibit Hall.

PACK FOOD ITEMS FOR HAITI Lifeline Christian Mission, in partnership with the NACC and many local sponsoring Indiana churches, need your help to pack food items into family sized units, which will be shipped and distributed to the hardship poor of Haiti. The product is a shelf-stable, nutritious, rice-based food that is shipped around the world where children and families are impacted by starvation and malnutrition. Volunteers age ten and older can help package a full cargo load of family sized food units for this important mission of hope for those in great need. The packing stations will be in the NACC Exhibit Hall, near the NACC HUB, Hall E1 Entry. Look for signup instructions at the Lifeline Christian Mission Booth 1017.

YOU CAN HELP MINISTERS IN NEED NACC is working with the Kairos Benevolence Fund to raise awareness of the increased need to provide help and support for ministers who have run into hardship or have an immediate need. Stop by the NACC HUB in Hall E, near E1 entry, to pick up a pamphlet and learn more about what you can do to help this effort as an individual or through your church as a budgeted ministry effort.

Room 121 | COLLIDE: THE IMPACT OF DISCIPLESHIP AND LEADERSHIP Nathan Cachiaras, Lindsey Kyker, Oscar Sarmiento, and Sarah Walsh, Milligan College There are lots of leadership myths such as leaders are powerful, knowledgeable, charismatic individuals. We think true leadership —credible, authentic, Christian leadership—happens at the place where leadership and discipleship collide. Explore how leadership actually begins with Jesus’ words, “follow me.” Perhaps true leaders are those who lead us in how to follow. Could that be you? Room 122 | AVOIDING THE LINE Matt Agnew, Chandler Christian Church, Chandler, AZ No one likes to wait in a line at an amusement park, grocery store, or anywhere. But perhaps some of the best lessons of our lives happen when things don’t go according to our plan. Maybe you’ve been wondering why God isn’t answering your prayers or showing you an immediate answer to your problems. Let’s examine how to be still and at peace with God. Matt will help you explore some valuable lessons as you wait on the desires of your heart.

MEET THE TEAM NACC Staff - Carie Schultz coordinates the NACC Children’s Convention. She loves serving with the experienced and creative team. Please contact Carie with any questions about the NACC Children’s Convention. Email is best, carie@gotonacc.org. By phone during the NACC, leave a message at the NACC Customer Service Desk (317) 262-5910. After the NACC, call the NACC office at (513) 772-9970 x 12.

Elementary Director - Larry Cramer loves working and sharing the gospel with what he calls the biggest mission field of the world (children). He wants to help make an impact on a kid’s worldview every time he teaches. Larry is the Children’s Minister at Bright Christian Church in Bright, Indiana. Larry is returning for his second year as the NACC Elementary Director. His team will be building on a program similar to the 2013 program, which the kids absolutely loved. Kindergarten Director - Dave Wohlenhaus serves at Connection Pointe Christian Church in Brownsburg, IN as the Children and Student Ministry Team Leader. Dave is married to Tara and has three daughters. Dave was on the Children’s Convention leadership team during the 2010 Indianapolis, NACC. He returned to direct the 5 and 6 year old rooms. Kindergarten will have a blast as they learn to “Live It Out.” Kids will learn to TAKE IN the stories (parables) that Jesus told, and then LIVE THEM OUT in our homes, schools, and churches. Preschool Director - Maggie Andrews is the Preschool Associate at Kingsway Christian Church. She grew up in Greenwood, Indiana; graduated from Ball State University (Elementary Education); and taught Kindergarten for three years at Greenwood Christian Academy. Maggie and her husband, Garrett, are very excited as they are expanding their family this fall and welcoming their first child. This is Maggie’s first year on the NACC Children’s Convention leadership team. She is leading the preschool (3 and 4 year olds) toward, “Building Hearts for Jesus.” Hearts will be captured as they are amazed and engaged in Bible Town. Children will experience hands on learning while visiting the marketplace, fishing, riding animals and worshiping in God’s house! Preschoolers love to learn by doing and these daily lessons and activities will bring Jesus and culture to life for them. Join us in Bible Town as we build hearts for Jesus! Nursery Director - Don A Stowell ministers at Lockland Christian Church in Cincinnati, OH. He and his wife, Sharlene, have three adult daughters and three grandchildren. Don serves on the NACC Leadership Committee and has written articles in Christian magazines as well as a book to help individuals with grief and loss. You may have seen Don around. He has helped during NACC events in ticket sales, special events, facility set-up, and more. Last year, Don helped pilot the first-ever Children’s Convention Kiosk in the registration area. This year, Don has volunteered to run the nursery. He added new emergency evacuation cribs to the nursery for safety and stability. His team is excited to help watch our youngest children while you attend NACC sessions. Security Team Director - Jared Perkins has been following God’s call to minister to children for over twenty years. He is currently the Children’s Minister at Plum Creek Christian Church in northern Kentucky. Jared has been on the NACC Children’s Convention leadership team since 2009 (missing only one year since 2009). His team is ready to greet you at the Children’s Convention kiosk in Crossroads Lobby, help you at your child’s door during check-in and check-out, and more. 7 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE 5 GENERATIONS TO REMISSION SAGAMORE 2

HOW CAN OUR WORSHIP SERVICES GROW THE BELIEVER AND REACH A SEEKER? ROOM 126

Haydn Shaw has researched generations for over twenty years and will explain what to do about the seven most important generational factors impacting your church and family. You’ll learn how to communicate, appreciate and get along better with the other generations. From worship music to the spiritual challenges of each generation to a whole new life stage that explains why twenty-somethings don’t settle down until later, you’ll learn how to help your church and family grow spiritually no matter what their generation.

On Sunday mornings, believers are looking for spiritual growth and encouragement while visitors are simply seeking a connection to something bigger. This panel discussion will share some tips for programming services that are attractive and meaningful to both believers and seekers.

NACC WORKSHOPS | SESSION II: THURSDAY 3:30 PM Continued from previous page YOU’RE GOING TO DIE…GET OVER IT! ROOM 126

LeRoy Lawson, Emmanuel Christian Seminary; Sam Winger, Serving Jesus Willingly Urban Ministries; Joanie Grimm, Young Americans Christian School

Looking for something to do in your retirement? Your new-found, well-earned freedom is a great opportunity for ministry. This panel of 3 speakers will share how you can continue to serve Jesus in your golden years.

PREACHING AND COMMUNICATION SPONSORED BY POINT UNIVERSITY

EXEGETING THE LISTENER ROOM 103

Aaron Wymer, Grandview Christian Church, Johnson City, TN; Kevin Odor, Canyon Ridge Christian Church, Las Vegas, NV

An important part of communication is understanding your audience. These experienced preachers will share helpful tips for communication that understands and connects to the congregation and the community.

MULTI-GENERATIONAL PREACHING SAGAMORE 1

Ben Merold and Brian Jobe, Harvester Christian Church, St. Charles, MO; Matt Nickoson, Kingsway Christian Church, Avon, IN

How do you reach all ages for Christ through preaching? This panel discussion will pass on useful strategies for effectively communicating with children, students, adults, and senior adults.

TRUTH IN LOVE: PREACHING ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY AND OTHER HOT TOPICS SAGAMORE 6

Caleb Kaltenbach, Discovery Church, Simi Valley, CA

Preaching about today’s hot topics is often like dancing in a mine field. This workshop will help us understand some important assumptions of the homosexual community and equip us to preach God’s truth in a spirit of love.

THEOLOGY AND APOLOGETICS

SPONSORED BY ROOM FOR DOUBT, LINCOLN CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY

KNOWING AND LOVING MY NEIGHBOR ROOM 107

Rick Rusaw, LifeBridge Christian Church, Longmont, CO

Jesus said 2 things matter most-Love God and Love your neighbor. We often get the first one down and neglect the second. What would happen in your community if everyone in your congregation were the best neighbor their neighbor ever had? What would happen if we spent as much energy and resource on the scattering as we do on the gathering? According to Jesus everything hinges on these two things, tough to open doors when there is only one hinge!

YOU LOST ME: FINDING FAITH IN A NEW GENERATION SAGAMORE 7 David Kinnaman, Barna Research

Twentysomethings are a “lost” generation, as their spiritual journeys often lead them away from congregational church involvement and out into the wider world. Learn about the ways in which young people quit the church; how long they stay away; and what are their reasons for leaving. More importantly, discover areas that a generation of nomads, skeptics and exiles are teaching the Christian community and how you can join in with a renewed hope for how God is at work in the next generation.

FAMILY MINISTRY SPONSORED BY IMPACT CANADA

DIGITAL MINISTRY RESOURCES ROOM 101 Nate Mace, Logos Bible Software

RESTORATION MOVEMENT

SPONSORED BY CINCINNATI CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY

BAPTISM, EUCHARIST AND MINISTRY: RESPONSES FROM A STONE-CAMPBELL PERSPECTIVE ROOM 104 Gary Holloway, World Convention of Churches of Christ; Robert Welsh, Council on Christian Unity, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); John Mark Hicks, Lipscomb University; Mark Weedman, Johnson University

From its beginning, the Stone-Campbell Movement’s reason to exist has been to promote Christian unity. Three emphases of our movement (dating back to Alexander Campbell’s articles “on the Ancient Order of Things”) have been baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and church leadership and ministry. Perhaps the most famous text of the modern ecumenical movement, “Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry,” adopted by Faith and Order at its plenary commission meeting in Lima, Peru in 1982, explores the growing consensus--and remaining differences--among churches on these three practices. This panel will present responses to Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry from each of the three North American streams of the Stone-Campbell Movement.

BONUS WORKSHOP LIFE ON MISSION CHURCH CAMPAIGN BRIEFING ROOM 109 Brett Eastman and the Saddleback Team

This briefing will equip you to host the Life on Mission campaign in your church. We will address campaign organization, leader recruitment, group formation and everything you will need for a successful launch.

Can Haydn Shaw help your church? “When we hit 1250, I told Haydn his job was to keep us ahead of the coming growth barriers. The reason we’ve been one of the fastest growing churches in America and kept people growing spiritually as well as we have is because he did exactly that. I’m a guy who sees a problem and can fix it. I needed someone around me who could anticipate the next problem and help me know what to do before it blew up.”

-Tim Harlow NACC President, Parkview Christian Church “I brought in Haydn to help us prepare for moving into a new building... and he did that, as well as help us realign our mission, vision, values staff and entire church culture. Six years later and we are still quoting Haydn Shaw! Working with him was one of the greatest catalysts to our growth.”

-Rusty George, Real Life Church

Haydn Shaw is the author of Sticking Points, an ordained minister, and a full time consultant with FranklinCovey for over two decades. He speaks, coaches church leaders over the phone, and works in person with five churches a year.

Stewardship A plan. A responsibility. A legacy that can benefit Christian ministries.

It takes only one small acorn to produce a mighty oak. Put enough of those acorns together and some really great things can be accomplished. Financial Planning Ministry knows how to accomplish great things for your church and its members by preparing estate plans and providing this service at no out-of-pocket cost. Estate gifts to your church or other ministry partners are simply encouraged. By becoming a partner, your organization has the potential to receive estate gifts from anyone assisted by Financial Planning Ministry. In a nutshell... your members benefit, your church benefits and other Christian ministries benefit. Now, that’s great stewardship.

WELCOME MESSAGES The North American Christian Convention (NACC) provides ideas, inspiration, and identity to Restoration Movement churches, ministries, and their leaders. The NACC began in 1927. The NACC attracts both vocational and nonvocational Christian leaders and their families. The NACC does not represent nor does it belong to an official denominational organizational structure of polity. Representatives from the NACC Leadership have written you welcome letters in their own words. We are so glad you could join us! John Derry NACC Board of Stewards Chairman On behalf of the Board of Stewards, welcome to the 2014 NACC. I always enjoy reading the evaluations after the Convention because they contain stories of men and women who leave with a renewed spirit. I am confident this year will be no exception. Tim Harlow and his team have developed a program around the theme of “Re-mission” that is sure to challenge and inspire you. Three of the nine members on the Board of Stewards are the previous, current, and next NACC presidents. These dynamic leaders work together devoting their energy and resources and making personal sacrifices to ensure the Convention is an excellent experience for all of us. The hundreds of local volunteers and the dedicated NACC staff serve willingly because they recognize the value of this event to our churches. Jane and I have lived in Illinois, Tennessee, Texas, and now California and have developed friendships across the country with many wonderful people whom we often see only at the Convention. This gathering is also about fellowship and has sometimes been referred to as a “family reunion.” I hope you find time in the next few days to re-connect with colleagues and friends who share your desire to see the church equipped for even greater service. God bless you for making the NACC part of your summer plans.

Dick Alexander 2014 NACC National Prayer Chairman We’ve been praying for you! We’ve prayed that you would attend the 2014 NACC, and that prayer has been answered with a resounding YES—you’re here! Welcome to the 2014 NACC! And we’ve been praying this convention would be a transformative experience for you. Every NACC is a great gathering of Christian leaders. This year’s NACC is also urgent! We see the changes in our culture and the growing disconnect between people and God. This week will be a time to refocus—to reset our hearts and our churches on the mission of Christ. It is our prayer that as a result of this week, thousands of people will go back home to help “remission” their churches in ways that will result in tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands (dare we pray for millions?) of people one day being in heaven. During this week, will you pray? Pray for God to break your heart anew for those far from Him? Pray that He will help you love your church more? Pray that he’ll give you insight into how to help “remission” your church? May this be a great week for you, and as a result a great week for all those who will be impacted for eternity through you!

Gary Johnson 2014 NACC Local Arrangements Co-Chairperson Welcome to Indianapolis, host city of the 2014 North American Christian Convention. It is our privilege and honor to welcome you to our town. Earlier this year, Indianapolis was named the “Best Convention City” in the nation by USA Today pollsters. Convention-goers and exhibitors gave us top honors because of our affordable and convenient city. While you are here, we hope that you will take time to enjoy a number of its amenities. There are restaurants to enjoy, parks to hike, and tourist attractions to visit. Moreover, there are sixty-plus independent Christian Churches in the Indy metro area, and we join together to welcome you to our great city. Great city. Those two words remind me of a question that God asked in Jonah 4:11. Turning to the prophet Jonah, God inquired about Nineveh, asking: “Should I not be concerned for that great city?” God wasn’t concerned about Nineveh’s employment rate, infra-structure, or being a convention city. He was concerned about the 120,000 broken, lost, disadvantaged people who lived there. Having been made in the image of God, can I say the same? Am I concerned for the great city of Indianapolis? Are you concerned for the great city that you call home? Re:Mission will challenge every one of us to ignite a new, heartfelt concern for broken and lost people. God is still concerned for your great city and mine. The question is: are we?

WELCOME MESSAGES Continued from previous page Fred Rodkey 2014 NACC Local Arrangements Co-Chairperson Welcome to Indianapolis, the home of the greatest spectacle in sports, the Indianapolis 500. We are so glad to be hosting the NACC this year and we are looking forward to challenging, encouraging, and equipping each of you to go home and bring a fresh perspective to how you will do ministry in the future. Tim Harlow and his team have put much effort into making this a convention that will move your church and you personally to another level of commitment to the commission that God has given to us. From challenging preaching to informative workshops to special studies and meals together you will find something for everyone at the convention this year. While you are here you may want to check out the downtown area which is loaded with great restaurants, entertainment, shopping, and the NCAA Hall of Fame & Headquarters for the sports fan. The Zoo is one of the best, Victory Field is a great place to catch a ballgame or look around, and the canal provides a great place to walk and unwind. Indianapolis is a big city with a small town feel that makes you feel welcome and warm. Just the way we want the convention to feel as well. The gathering of so many who value God’s truth and love their relationship with Him will make this convention special. So gather with friends, family and fellow saints to enjoy a week of fellowship, preaching and “re-missioning” that will fuel your passion for God and His work for a long time.

Larry D. Collins NACC Managing Director and Meeting Planner Welcome to the NACC! It is fitting that we are returning to Indianapolis, IN on this occasion, because this is the city where the North American Christian Convention began in 1927. This is the 75th event year for NACC. Awesome! Thank you for taking action and participating! The theme is REMISSION. Our work and focus this week is about coming together to both learn and understand the critical role our churches are engaged in every day. Perhaps more than ever before, we need to learn how this Kingdom Work involves the very community and city that each of our churches serve. Each of “us” play a critical role in our own church; it must be personal for each of us. Isaiah 6:8: Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, “Here I am, send me.” Are we serving? The right way? Let’s find out what more we can do this week. Please ENJOY as much of the NACC Celebration as you can! In addition to the Worship, the featured morning Bible Study, the featured seminars and workshops, and the many special events, there is even more to see, experience, and enjoy. Our students and our children will also be involved in programming that will energize, inspire, and add FUN to their week. Remember to visit the many resource centers that will have books, CDs, DVDs, and take home resources to share back home. And again for the fourth year in a row, all of our worship sessions will be LIVE STREAMED. The sessions will be available as Video On Demand from the NACC web site each day, right after each service, and for 30 days afterwards. Please call and share that great news with a friend back home. Got Volunteers? We have some of the best! As you are enjoying the event, please realize that over 25 churches are involved in the volunteer effort for this event. Approximately 1,000 volunteers will be working throughout the NACC during this event week. You will see them in many areas of hospitality, registration, welcome centers, and in all areas of the adult, student, and children’s programming. They are here because they want your 2014 NACC experience to be special. Be sure to say hello and thank them for their service. They are a great group of Christian servants and “they” help make this event possible. Hint: they are wearing GREEN ribbons on their name badges! Please do not hesitate to ask for help of any kind during your visit. We are ALL here to serve! The National Bible Bowl will be crowning a winning team on Thursday, so stop in and cheer on a team to victory. Lifeline Christian Mission will be packing 250,000 meals and FAME will be packing personal hygiene items. BOTH efforts are for the disadvantaged. Be sure to stop by and share your time and resources with these service project efforts. Join Christian Standard, as they interview some of our guest speakers on the Connecting Place Stage. Don’t miss the NACC Exhibit Hall as there are over 300 different displays. A Free WIFI connection is available in The HUB and in each of the convention center food courts. Stop by The HUB and check your email. Join friends at the Connecting Place Stage in Hall E and enjoy one of the reasonably priced meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. On behalf of our Board of Stewards, the 2014 NACC President and his Executive Committee, NACC Leadership, and the dedicated NACC Staff, “WE ALL” wish you a wonderful NACC Celebration. May your 2014 NACC- REMISSION experience be everything you expected and more!

Your willingness to share your time, your staff, and financial gifts with the NACC is most appreciated. Includes gifts from March 1, 2013 through April 30, 2014.
