Mining machine crushes comminution costs South Australian company IMP technologies (IMPTEC) has developed a super fine crusher

that reduces comminution costs. The company is currently trialling a semi-commercial unit at Hallett Concrete in Adelaide, South Australia’s capital. The machine is being used to turn the waste from black sand or iron sand into a replacement for Portland cement. IMPTEC Director John Doherty said the crusher was a game-changing invention that could eventually be at the forefront of the industry. “What we’re involved in is reducing the amount of energy, which is usually electrical, and the cost of media. You can also include lower maintenance costs because it’s just one machine,” he said. “The energy density of the crusher is greater than other machines and reduces around 30% of energy costs.” Comminution is the essential processor of minerals into cement, more commonly Portland cement, a known producer of a number of greenhouse gases. It also accounts for almost 40% of total mining costs and three per cent of the world’s energy consumption, prompting the search for a more efficient solution. Conventional methods include breaking down large rocks to a few centimetres, crushing them further to fit into a ball mill, and grinding the minerals with the help of media and water till the material came out in slurry form. The machine shortens the process by merging the second and third stage. It is unique because it also able to run the process dry and without the use of media. Doherty said the company plans to produce a fully commercial product by the end of the year. “Our semi-commercial unit takes in orders of two tonnes per hour,” Doherty said. “If it approves itself over the next few months, it would be good. We’re looking at scaling up to 100 tonnes per hour.” The transformation of black sand or granulated slag into cement is a world first. Last month IMPTEC was awarded the Statewide Super Innovation in Resources Award for its super fine crusher at the inaugural South Australian Resources Industry Awards. The judging panel included the leader of the Minerals and Energy strand at the University of South Australia’s Future Industries Institute Bill Skinner who said that as good deposits of high-grade minerals diminished, the need to grind more material finer was vital. “Energy consumption is going to go up if we are trying to keep up with what is needed in terms of metals,” he said. “So anything that is going to reduce the footprint of an operating plant is going to be good,” he added. “Portland cement is very energy intensive to produce and produces a lot of CO2 in the process. If you are using something that is actually a waste product, that is what you want.” “This (IMPTEC’s super fine crusher) particular technology offers much reduced energy consumption. Upscaling it is a challenge that needs to be overcome.” Source: www.theleadsouthaustralia.com.au

GCC states can save $3.5 billion with energy-efficient buildings

GCC countries can save $3.5 billion with energy-efficient buildings, industry experts announced in the build-up to the International Design Exhibition (INDEX) in the UAE. With energy and facilities management combining for 90% of a building’s costs, energy-efficient buildings can drive $3.5 billion in savings in the GCC, and $2 billion in the UAE, according to a report by the Middle East Facility Management Association (MEFMA). “Middle East architects and building owners are increasingly demanding global best practices energy efficiency, in line with national sustainability programs in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar,” said Santhosh Vallil, Sales Manager, Hunter Douglas Middle East, the Dutch architecture consultancy with numerous Middle East projects. “With the abundance of glass in the Middle East’s modern architecture, proper shading and privacy are important to create internal comfort, save on energy costs, and deliver an aesthetically-pleasing design,” added Vallil. Anticipating the growing demand for Middle East energy-efficient solutions, Hunter Douglas has launched the next generation Flat Bar sliding shutter, with excellent design, functionality, and comfort, including “green” characteristics that decrease energy consumption. The minimalist Flat Bar sliding shutter can reduce the amount of solar heat indoors by up to 90%, thanks to overlapping fins, and a sliding shutter of only 5mm thickness, which is half the thickness of comparable shutter systems, and a nearlyinvisible aluminium frame. Delivering pleasing aesthetics, Flat Bar can block the window entirely, leaving users living on the ground or first floors undisturbed by passers-by, a key component of Middle East buildings, and is especially useful for lower-budget projects. The Flat Bar sliding shutter system was recently applied in a housing complex in Brescia, Italy, where the sliding shutters fit in perfectly thanks to their slim construction. “It looks as though the sliding shutters were separately installed on the facade, rather than being integrated. The architect likes to combine different materials and techniques, for instance, glued tiles, wooden facade, painted wall,” said Fabio Brivio, Unit Manager, Hunter Douglas Italy.

A look at the new Commercial Agencies Law On 16 April 2016, Law No (2) of 2016 (New Law) was issued amending the Qatar Commercial Agencies Law (Law No (8) of 2002) (Old Law). This article provides a brief introduction to the commercial agency framework in Qatar. It then outlines the main amendments to the Old Law enacted by the New Law and comments on how these will affect commercial agencies in Qatar. Commercial Agencies Framework in Qatar A commercial agency in the State of Qatar is a regulated form of commercial relationship between a foreign principal and a Qatari agent for the purpose of distributing the principal’s goods or services in Qatar. There are three core requirements for a registerable commercial agency: 1. The agency contract between the principal and agent must provide for exclusive distribution rights of goods or services in Qatar in favour of the agent; 2. The agency contract must provide the agent with the right to represent the principal in Qatar; and 3. The agency contract must state the commission payable to the agent in respect of the sale of the principal’s goods. If any of these requirements are not satisfied, the commer-

cial agency in theory, cannot be registered and where it is unregistered the protections of the Old Law should not apply to the agency relationship (though other local laws will apply). However any contract between the intended agent and principal will otherwise remain valid. Changes to the Commercial Agencies Law The New Law does not fundamentally overhaul the structure of the Old Law however there are some notable amendments, as follows. Ability to exclude certain goods and services from the effect of commercial agencies Previously, the Old Law permitted a merchant registered in the Commercial Register to import commodities included in their agency, regardless of that commodity being included in another entity’s commercial agency. The New Law has implemented a significant amendment to this provision. The Council of Ministers are now authorised to exclude certain goods, products and services from the application of the commercial agency law. As such, the New Law may envisage a reduction of the influence of commercial agents in certain areas. However the true effect of this amendment will not be clear until the Ministry has had the opportunity

to prepare a list of exclusions permitted under the New Law. In addition to this, the New Law permits the importation of ‘goods’ covered in a commercial agency even if such goods already have local agents. It is suggested that ‘goods’ represents a broader definition than the term ‘commodities’ under the Old Law and this could also therefore reduce the exclusivity of commercial agencies. Entitlement of the agent to commission

Previously, the agent was entitled to commission not exceeding 5% of the value of the goods if the same were imported by third parties and the goods did not originate from the principal. The classification of the commission was determined by the Minister of Economy and Commerce (Minister). Under the New Law, the agent is simply entitled to the commission provided for in their agreement with the principal if the goods or services are imported via third parties for the purpose of trading. The provisions disentitling the agent from commission in respect of goods imported for personal use or in respect of items imported for re-exportation remains in place. Broadening of provisions deeming entities to be commercial agents Previously, the Old Law deemed commercial agents to be those exclusively licensed to distribute or sell products and commodities or to deliver services, for fees, within the scope of an agency for a principal. This provision was placed at the beginning of the Old Law and appeared to be stated as a ‘general definition’ of a commercial agent. The New Law has retained this definition, however it has also introduced a further description. This description is similar to that under the Old Law except it also includes the ‘promotion and distribution’ of ‘goods, products and services’ for an ‘industrial or commercial establishment’. It is arguable that the intended amendment relates to the ‘promotion’ of goods and services and that there is a distinction between a ‘principal’ and an ‘industrial or commercial establishment’. Despite this, it is suggested that there is not a substantial difference between the nature of the items or services subject to the agency. It is further suggested that the wording under the New Law relating to an ‘industrial or commercial establishment’ would have been included in the meaning

under the Old Law. Amendments to penalties for breaching the commercial agencies law Under the Old Law, the penalties for breach of three provisions of the Old Law were a maximum of a QAR 10,000 fine and/or a prison sentence of six months. In the case of repeat offending, the penalties could be doubled at the offending business forcibly closed. These penalties applied in respect of a new agent replacing an existing agent and failing to purchase the latter’s stock. It also applied in respect of failing to maintain all spare parts and service facilities at reasonable prices or failing to deregister an agency at the point of its expiry. Under the New Law, the monetary penalty has now been doubled to QAR 20,000 and the offence must be advertised in two local newspapers. The penalty under the Old Law for false statements in respect of matters addressed by the Old Law was a fine of a maximum of QAR 5,000 and imprisonment of three months. Again, the monetary penalty has been doubled under the New Law, to QAR 10,000. The most notable alteration to the penalty provisions under the New Law is that the Ministry is empowered to settle criminal proceedings upon receipt of half of the maximum monetary penalty sought, provided the prohibited activities cease. The Old Law did not provide for such settlement procedures. Other ancillary amendments The minimum age limit for natural persons wishing to be commercial agents has reduced from 21 to 18. The New Law has added a power for the Minister to implement controls and procedures for licensing a ‘commercial representation office’ operating in Qatar for the purpose of promoting products but without selling the same. Related to this, a Ministry may grant a license to a business to establish a maintenance workshop for goods that are

covered in an agency agreement. Each Ministry may only grant licenses to businesses falling within their regulatory competence. No power to issue such licenses existed under the Old Law. Conclusion The amendments to the Old Law do not fundamentally overhaul the commercial agencies regime in Qatar. Instead, the New Law focuses on a number of specific reforms. Most importantly amongst these is the ability for the Qatari Government to exclude certain products and services from the exclusivity of commercial agencies, thus potentially relaxing the exclusivity of some commercial agencies. There have also been a number of smaller amendments that improve the efficiency of the commercial agency regime as a whole. Internet of Things to power Qatar’s smart city development initiatives

Internet of Things can help construction companies in the country with on-time, on-budget project completion

By Gamal Emara Country Manager, HPE Aruba Optimistic forecasts for the Qatar’s construction sector for the next few years is driven by factors such as encouraging macroeconomics, affirmative demographics, as well as a resistant infrastructure project pipeline. The government is solidly behind smart city development initiatives. As Qatar ushers in this new era of advancement, much has been predicted and promised about the integration of ICT into every aspect of the completed city developments. The computing capabilities of mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) devices have advanced to a level that has made them capable of aiding the planning, designing and building phases. But turning mobility into an effective tool requires not only computing power but also connectivity. At job-sites, wired connections are not feasible and cellular networks are not always available and hence a strong case can therefore be made for developers to utilize Wi-Fi solutions. These are not only easy to install and manage, but are now also affordable and rugged enough to see deployment in harsh construction surroundings.IoT represents a huge op-

6

JUNE 2016

portunity for the construction industry, which is constantly processing data and strives for workplace safety, as well as efficiency. IoT needs a secure, scalable network to succeed and WiFi offers what IT departments require for strong “construction IoT networking”. Facilitating workflow With the introduction of tablet devices, mobile project management has emerged as a worthy replacement to age old methods. Coupled with the broad ecosystem of feature-rich mobile applications and the ability to draw from vast amounts of remotely stored data and “cloud” services, these devices are capable of granting contractors, engineers and supervisors access to blue prints, schematics and other vital documents. Moreover, with the ability to instantly push updates to all members working on the project, mobile computing devices can aid collaboration and revolutionize the building information modeling (BIM) process in real-time. With site-wide high speed wireless connectivity for all mobile devices, workers gain the ability to transfer high volumes of data back and forth between not only each other but also headquarters (HQ).

CONSTRUCTION

SITES

This significantly streamlines communications while cutting costs and improving operational efficiencies. This could also bear attractive “green” side effects as staff no longer have to make regular trips to and from HQ. High speed wireless connectivity is an enabler of the following applications: Wearables A truck driver can be required to wear a “wearable”, which may come in the form of an activity band. Drivers and management can be notified if a driver is missing or is being unproductive. Construction workers onsite can wear a helmet and vest with RFID, vitals monitoring, GPS sensors, motion sensors, etc. Smart GPS Knowing GPS data related to where your equipment is located and how it is being used is important for identifying cost savings opportunities and keeping your fleet organized. These benefits can be uncovered by analyzing the GPS data from across your fleet and comparing it over a period of time. Asset tracking At job sites, company assets are a major investment and the progress of construction is heavily dependent on their functionality.

Heavy-equipment is often required to be left on-site overnight which makes them a prime target for theft. Asset tracking technologies help monitor such equipment remote locations and automatically detect and report suspicious behaviour. Developers can also benefit from automated maintenance schedules, logs and reports. The readiness of cheap and easy-to-use RFID technology has made possible the automation of inventory management. By knowing in advance which materials are soon to run out, construction companies can foresee and avoid material deficiencies, thus eliminating losses in productivity. Equipment repairs are one of the largest operating costs in the construction industry. With the advanced sensors available now, machinery can self-detect the need for a repair before it becomes a larger issue. Equipment inspection Similar to monitoring and repair, equipment inspections can be enormously enhanced by the help of smart sensors. With the advanced sensors available now, machinery can self-detect the imminent need for a repair before it becomes a larger is-

sue. Lost/late forms, low accuracy and undue internal processing time are no longer an issue with electronic processes. Site security Another vital area of a construction site where mobile technology can be applied is in video surveillance. Not only does this enable better collaboration and remote supervision, it is essential to site security. High-speed connectivity for robust and cost-effective camera equipment can mean the ready availability of high definition video, making both identification and collaboration easier. IoT and mobility solutions An Internet of Things solution implementation is not impossible to manage, but it’s not easy either. In fact, developing solutions for the Internet of Things requires unprecedented collaboration, coordination and connectivity for each piece in the system, and throughout the system as a whole. All devices must work together and be integrated with all other devices, and all devices must communicate and interact seamlessly with connected systems and infrastructures. The challenge for the developer is to find a robust enterprise-

class Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) solution that is affordable in terms of the capital expense and operational overheads. In line with keeping things simple, developers should also consider investing in controller-less “instant” WLAN solutions. These solutions utilize a virtual controller on access points to deliver controller-like features including RF management and role based access control. As construction integrates more deeply with IT, network uptime will become an increasingly important factor. It is therefore prudent to invest in network management tools which can prove invaluable in providing maximum network availability. Companies must look for a service provider whose solution is based on the latest 802.11ac wireless standard as this delivers gigabit Wi-Fi combined with the device density and application intelligence required by today’s Wi-Fi networks. There is also a need to balance cyber and physical security since smart devices are physical in nature. For Qatar that is keen to drive smart cities, both cyber and physical security should always be considered in the upstream of the project.

Top 10 construction machinery manufacturers Construction equipment worth $145.3 billion will be sold worldwide in 2015. But who is the world’s biggest construction machinery manufacturer?

When it comes to size heavy equipment does not have a shred of modesty. Bigger is definitely better and that goes for the actual equipment as well as sales. Combine this with the massive growth in construction around the globe and it seems that construction machinery sales are forecast to top $145bn this year. According to the Bauma organisers the week long show that

was held in Munich in April this year attracted almost 580,000 visitors from 200 countries. After Germany, the top 10 countries of origin among the visitors were Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, UK, Sweden, the Russian Federation, Poland and the Czech Republic. There were a total of 3,423 exhibitors – 1,263 from Germany and 2,160 from abroad. Any concerns about economic

troubles in China and other developing markets slowing global construction demand were not evident at the Bauma construction equipment trade show, which saw over half a million attendees descend on Munich, Germany, for the largest triennial construction equipment trade fair. Which country dominates machinery sales and can it hold on to its huge lead? But the big question is, who are

the world leaders and who are trailing in their dust? China’s market increased from $33bn in 2010 to just under $44bn in 2015. Lift truck sales to customers in China are projected to reach 290,000 units in 2015. Globally, the construction equipment market expanded from $109bn in 2008 to $145.3bn in 2015. Araco: Raising the bar for heavy duty operation Since 2009 ARACO has offered a care track system with All Volvo machines as well as a free subscription for six years, where a memory card is inserted in the equipment recording all the operation history. “At that time, we were the first to introduce such a system to the Qatari market and today many competitors are following suit,” said General Manager Walid Dowidar. “With this client-centered approach, we have been able to achieve amazing results. “This story of success would not have been possible without the cooperation from each department. And, of course, our clients who constantly believed in us,” added a company spokesperson. Some of the improvements that they are particularly proud of was the creation of their outdoor service team. “In 2015 we set a goal to increase the quality of our after sales service. By increasing the number of people in our after sales team we have been able to realize an increase in the uptime for clients,” said a company spokesperson. Lots of training was conducted to bring each customer service representative in the outdoor service team upto the required international standard but the results have been outstanding. ARACO noted that there had been some customer concerns but most of them have now been addressed. Arabian Agencies Company (Araco), a premier provider of advanced machines for Qatar’s construction and

infrastructure industry, recently launched two stateof-the-art simulators that can be used to train operators of excavators and wheel loaders. The simulators, which were developed in co-operation with Volvo Construction Equipment, offer realistic training without having to take machines out of operation or risk downtime due to training-related machine damage. Commenting on the new addition to Araco’s wide range of products, General Manager Walid Dowidar said: “With these new simulator machines, Araco is fulfilling the three core values of Volvo, which are Quality, Safety and Environmental Care. “We aim to continue to fulfill these values and are currently offering our client’s operators special training which is integral to the productivity of their businesses. “In order for them to maximize the potential of the machines, we opened a fully-equipped training center that has been operating successfully since the since quarter of 2015.” The simulator machines

provide operators with regular follow-up so that they are able to improve skills such as fuel and load efficiency, economic operation and prevention of tire wear; all of which will contribute to reducing environmental impact. Having secured the rights to represent reputed brands, Araco is fast becoming one of the most reputable heavy equipment companies serving the country’s rapidly growing construction sector. After a specific number of operation hours, some of the main components need to be renewed or they need an overhaul, according to the company’s workshop manager. “This happens in our onsite workshops. The advantage of re-manufacturing or re-conditioning is to deliver quick exchange with no extra renovations necessary in order to the machine running as fast as possible and to offer fast and quality repair as good as a brand new component,” he said. “This way the client gains a new operating age for the same piece,” added workshop manager.

Key player in China’s automotive sector sees Qatar as its ‘star’ market

JMC products include mid-range and high-end commercial vehicles and dual passenger/cargo vehicles

The space above the three concentrically placed triangles in the Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC) logo connotes the room that the Chinese automobile manufacturer has left for growth and innovation. That is the message that JMC wants to convey to its market. Although not a newcomer, Chinese automobiles still have to make a major breakthrough in a market historically monopolised by Japanese products, says Mr. Patrick Liu, Country Manager Auto Department for Jiangxi Jiangling Motors Import and Export Company. Ltd., in an exclusive interview at the Kia showroom of Al Attiyah Motors. According to Mr. Hossam Abu Shadi, the Automotive Director at Al Attiya Motors Qatar, they are working closely with JMC to change the perception that the brand has in Qatar. Hossam Shadi is unabashed in his admiration of the Chinese ability to innovate and stay ahead of the market. He believes that the journey that Chinese products have undergone in terms of quality is unparalleled and the only challenge that they face in the Qatar market is the historical perception that the Japanese brands are more reliable.

JUNE 2016

JMC products include midrange and high-end commercial vehicles and dual passenger/cargo vehicles, offering real value for money, economy, reliability, durability and fuel efficiency. Through global partnerships, JMC has adopted leading international product technology, manufacturing processes and management concepts, applying highly-efficient and transparent operations and high-standards of business management. An exciting range of new models is planned for the future. JMC has featured in China’s top 100 listed companies for five successive years and their pickups have been rated China’s top favourites for 12 consecutive years. JMC is increasing being seen as a key player in the Chinese automotive industry with commercial vehicles as its core products. In 2014, JMC hit record highs in its business indices with sales revenue reaching 25.5 billion RMB and sales volume crossing over 276,000 units. Patrick concedes that they had made a miscalculation a few years ago but remains sceptical about its actual effect. But

Patrick says because of the way news spreads in Qatar and the Middle East, it is still part of the local folklore! He recalls that they had begun selling the JMC refrigerated trucks in Qatar but had underestimated the extreme temperatures in the Middle East. Patrick notes that the refrigerated truck was extremely effective in China where in certain areas it reached very high outdoor temperatures. However, the Chinese-manufactured refrigerators were apparently no match for the Gulf desert heat which left a few dissatisfied customers in Qatar. JMC has been trying to claw its way back into the market since then and they feel that they have addressed the challenge. They now only use the Thermoking brand of refrigerators in their refrigerated trucks and no longer use the previous model. And they are doing their best to change the perception about the JMC brand though only the refrigerator trucks that had been affected. In fact, in Algeria, which has an extreme climate, terrain and operating base, they have sold more than 5,000 truck units alone. They are also planning an assembly and manufactur-

ing plant in Algeria this year. In the middle of the 1980s, JMC initially introduced internationally advanced technology to manufacture light-duty trucks and became a major light truck manufacturer in China. As a pioneer to introduce foreign investment in Jiangxi Province, with support from its strategic partner Ford, JMC developed rapidly and gained a solid ground. The company absorbed cutting-edge product technology, manufacturing processes and management concepts, adopted practical share balancing systems and formed standardized management and operation systems. JMC has established international-standards operating systems and mechanisms that integrate R&D, logistics, MS&S and financing supports and have been regarded as a model of successful Sino-foreign cooperation. Besides light trucks and pickups, the company has been investing heavily in new product development to enrich its product line. Yu Sheng, as the first passenger vehicle of JMC, marked a new era of the company’s passenger vehicle business.

In 2013, the brand new Yusheng S350, made its shining debut in the market and in 2014, JMC and Ford jointly released the “Everest” SUV. In China, JMC is considered to be a moderate to high-end commercial brand due to its longstanding relationship with both Ford Motor Company and Isuzu Corporation. In the last four years, JMC has come up as the top commercial brand in China. Patrick told Construction Sites that, among all Chinese Light Duty Truck brands, JMC has the highest selling price on similar truck models. “In the Chinese domestic market, the price gap between JMC and other Chinese brands is large because the JMC brand is highly recognised for its product quality. But in overseas markets, the price gap is much smaller, thanks to the export – oriented strategy of the JMC Group as well as the great support from JMC plant.” However, JMC continues to make inroads into world automotive markets with a 15% market share in light duty trucks export. It hopes to increase and consolidate its share in the Middle East. Qatar’s automotive market sells around 100,000 units in

Patrick Liu, representative for JMC Qatar market total, while Saudi Arabia’s sells 800,000 units in total for all brands and makes. JMC sees Qatar as a “star” market, as Qatar continues on the road towards the FIFA 2022 with massive infrastructure and mega project construction plans well underway. JMC will be launching a new light duty truck shortly with the punch where it counts, under the hood. As a testament to JMC’s strong global and technical partnerships, the new truck is ultra modern with a high quality finish and a Ford Puma engine. Construction Sites looks forward to test driving it in the near future.

Technology in Practice What, Why & How? National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, 2011 TIP 1 – QUANTIFYING CONCRETE QUALITY WHAT DOES QUANTIFYING CONCRETE QUALITY MEAN? Many ready mixed concrete producers are making significant efforts in improving quality. How does a concrete producer evaluate whether their quality initiatives and efforts are making a positive impact on the company? On the operations side they can compare their efforts to industry benchmarks, such as the ones published by NRMCA resulting from industry surveys. These benchmarks include yards/hour, delivery costs for fleets, and safety statistics. Financial benchmarks specific to the industry are also available, developed by the NRMCA. Similar benchmarks specific to quality initiatives are not generally published. However, a producer should make attempts to monitor costs that can be attributed to a reduced level of quality. Some suggestions are discussed. HOW DOES ONE QUANTIFY CONCRETE QUALITY? The cost due to a reduced level quality may be measured by monitoring the following: • Amount of rejected concrete as a percent of the concrete produced for non-compliance with project specifications such as strength, slump, air content or other contractor requirements • Cost to evaluate, mitigate, repair or replace hardened concrete because concrete did not meet purchaser’s or specification requirements or expectation • Variability in compressive strength as measured by standard deviation – may be monitored by plant • Perception of producer’s quality by customers through surveys or other means and its impact on return business by individual customers WHY IS QUANTIFYING CONCRETE QUALITY IMPORTANT? Quantifying concrete quality is important because some benchmark is measured and the measured factor establishes targets for continuous improvement. When this is shown to benefit the company’s bottom line, it justifies the quality initiative Rejected concrete due to quality-related issues, even if it is beneficially reused, still represents money lost in terms of truck time and man hours. A cost that is more difficult to quantify is the customer’s negative perception. Cost to repair hardened concrete can involve core tests or other evaluation that can become very expensive, even if litigation is not involved. A producer that establishes and follows a good quality management system is likely to have a lower amount of rejected concrete and reduced costs to deal with problems with placed concrete on an annual basis. Variability in compressive strength as measured by standard deviation (s) is an excellent measure of a producer’s quality. Table 1, reproduced from Table 4.4 from ACI 214-11, shows that the standards of concrete control based on general construction testing can vary from Excellent (s < 400 psi (2.76 MPa)) to Poor (s > 700 psi (4.83 MPa)). This applies to typical concrete strengths in the range of 3000 to 5000 psi. A low standard deviation is desirable because it will result in a lower required average strength (f’cr) or strength over-design that a producer needs in a mix submittal for a specified strength (f’c). A lower required average strength will reduce the material costs for each class of concrete. Since entrained air is a factor that adds to variability of concrete, strength data for air-entrained and non-air entrained concrete may be tracked separately. Table 2 shows the required average strength f’cr, calculated for f’c = 4000 psi (27.6 MPa) for different levels of standard deviation. Assuming that for each 200 psi (1.38 MPa) increase in average strength results in an increase in concrete materials cost of $1/yd3, the cost savings due to the lower average concrete strength can be estimated. It is instructive to note that improving quality, i.e. reducing “s” from 750 psi (5.2 MPa) to 350 psi (2.4 MPa) can result in a saving of $3.9/yd3 in concrete materials cost due to a reduction in required average strength from 5250 psi (36.2 MPa) to 4470 psi (30.8 MPa). Another way to look at this is with poor quality one may have to increase concrete materials cost by $3.9/yd3 to avoid low strength test results. Poor testing quality can also increase the “s” and has to be addressed separately. However, for the same level of testing quality the producer with better quality will still have a lower “s” and is therefore in a better position. If field strength data is not documented to calculate an s value, the concrete mixture will have to be designed for a higher required average strength. This increases the costs to the producer. Monitoring the customer’s perception of producer’s quality conveys the producer’s emphasis on quality and continual improvement. When customers associate good quality with a ready mixed concrete producer, they are less likely to assign blame for problems and will attempt to identify other causes for those problems. Owners and design professionals will be more likely to involve the concrete producer in product recommendations in specifications for desired concrete performance, or to solicit their advice when problems occur. The attention to quality initiatives will foster increased business. IS QUANTIFYING CONCRETE QUALITY ALWAYS IMPORTANT? Even when a producer primarily supplies to applications where there are no jobsite acceptance testing, a good quality management system will help optimize mixtures for required performance at reduced cost. The producer that primarily supplies to projects involving jobsite acceptance testing will see significant cost savings due to good quality practice. Quality is everyone’s responsibility that includes management support, well trained staff, well maintained production facilities and delivery vehicles, good materials management practices, and measurements to establish benchmarks for improvement. The search for quality never ends. Table 1. Issue No. (107) June 2016, Doha - Qatar

It’s a hat-trick! Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts gears up for 2022 Football World Cup with third Qatar property

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts takes over the management of a Doha hotel, located in the city’s renowned Aspire Zone sports complex

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts (MHR) has started operating its third property in Doha - a strategic move that capitalizes on Qatar’s status as a world class sports hub and host of the 2022 Football World Cup. The upscale 139-room Mövenpick Hotel Al Aziziyah Doha, located in the city’s internationallyrenowned Aspire Zone, also known as Doha Sports City, opened its doors on May 1, taking over the luxurious Victorian-style building, which was earlier occupied by Grand Heritage Hotel Doha. It marks a Doha hat-trick for MHR, which already operates Mövenpick Hotel Doha and Mövenpick Hotel West Bay Doha, and will take the Swiss hospitality firm’s total

Qatar inventory to more than 640 keys.
