Harbor Modernization Plan...

HDOT Holds Groundbreaking on $448M Kapalama Container Terminal Project The Kapalama Container Terminal (KCT), the centerpiece of the Harbor Modernization Plan, is maintaining the shipping logistics necessary to sustain Hawaii. More than 80 percent of all goods consumed by Hawaii residents and its visitors are imported to the islands, and of that, more than 98.6 percent flows through the Port Hawaii commercial harbor system. Hawaii Harbors Users Group (HHUG) has championed the Harbor Modernization Plan initiative and supported by the Legislature since 2008. “Hawaii’s container terminal operations had reached its maximum capacity and the inefficiencies were adversely affecting Hawaii’s economy,” said Gary J. North, executive director, Hawaii Harbors Users Group. “Governor Ige was a member of the Legislature at the time, and understands the dire consequences facing our state.” The plan will expand harbor capaci-

ty, address advancements in containerized cargo handling, alleviate congestion issues and the lack of available operational space, and develop more adaptable and resilient port facilities. The Pasha Group, a transportation and logistics management specialist, has announced that it will invest in the most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly vessels to serve the Hawaii and United States mainland trade lane as a result of the container terminal development. Pasha Group also will construct infrastructure improvements unique to its Honolulu operation, including facilities and container gantry cranes. “I’m proud to say the construction of the Kapalama Container Terminal Project is under way, and in four years we’ll have a new state-of-the-art cargo facility that will allow us to consolidate cargo operations, enhance operational efficiencies and improve cargo handling capacity,” said Hawaii’s Gov. David Ige. “This will support our local

economy while ensuring the continued flow of cargo to our communities through this distribution hub. “In addition to the $448 million that we’re investing in the Kapalama Container Terminal project, we’ve completed several other modernization projects designed to enhance maritime operations throughout the state. These projects have infused more than $140 million into our local economy, creating job opportunities in construction and specialized trades as well as transportation and maritime-related occupations. These accomplishments would not be possible without our private industry partners — including the Hawaii Harbors Users Group and The Pasha Group.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Additional Energy Needs...

Public Service Co. Seeks New Wind, Solar Farms for Facebook Data Center ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) New Mexico’s largest electricity provider is seeking state regulatory approval for power purchase agreements with two companies that would build new wind and solar farms to serve Facebook’s new data center. The Public Service Co. of New Mexico’s request for the Public Regulation Commission comes after Facebook announced plans to expand the data center under construction south of Albuquerque, the Albuquerque Journal reported. Facebook plans to expand the Los Lunas data center to six buildings over the next five years, requiring more power. The utility is already constructing three solar plants to supply the center’s first two buildings. The utility has negotiated agreements with Avangrid Renewables and NextEra Energy Inc. to build and operate two wind farms and a solar facility to meet Facebook's added energy needs. The companies would sell the generated power to the utility for delivery. The utility is proposing for Avangrid to build a wind farm by 2020 east of Estancia in central New Mexico.

For NextEra, the utility wants the $72 million wind farm that’s expected to be completed at the end of this year in the eastern part of the state. It also wants the $75 million solar plant that will be built in Cibola County in western New Mexico, which is expected to open in late 2021. The utility is looking to expedite the approval process for the purchase agreements as Facebook’s construction plans for the data center accelerate. The utility is seeking to bring the case directly before the commission instead of going through rounds of initial hearings. The partnership with Facebook is beneficial to both sides by boosting the local economy and creating clean energy, utility officials said. “We look forward to working with Facebook and the commission on these new projects that will do even more to help the environment as well as bolster economic development,” said Becky Teague, a spokesman for the utility.
