Mass. Road, Bridge Projects Come in Over Budget, Late WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) An investigation has found that nearly half of all road and bridge projects in Massachusetts are over budget and more than one-third are not completed on time. A study by the New England Center for Investigative Reporting and reported Aug. 14 by the Telegram & Gazette, found that in the last four fiscal years, contractors had 155,008 extra workdays added to their construction schedules and billed the state more than $352 million in cost overruns on hundreds of road and bridge projects. The New England Center for Investigative Reporting cited data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. MassDOT officials said changes to work orders, scheduling and sites and other issues likely contributed to increased costs and delays. An agency study said extra work orders and design changes or omissions cause 86 percent of internal delays.
