KUBOTA, TOPCON SIGN RESEARCH AGREEMENT FOR SMART AGRICULTURE

INFRASTRUCTURE from page 62 Virginia

Approximately $7 billion will go to Virginia highways and more than $530 million to bridge replacement and repairs. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger has a list of potential projects she’d like to see receive funding

Those Virginia-specific projects include train travel between Richmond and D.C.; expansion of I-95 express lanes; and work on the Mayo Bridge in Richmond, the victim of water damage.

Spanberger’s list also includes work on the I-95/Willis interchange in Chesterfield; making W. Broad Street safer for pedestrians in Henrico; and work on Route One in Chesterfield, Route 250 and Route 288 in Goochland, Route 208 in Louisa, Route 360 in Chesterfield and Amelia and Route 60 and Judes Ferry Road in Powhatan.

Washington

Washington Sen. Patty Murray announced that $1.79 billion has been designated in IIJA for transportation. SeattleTacoma International Airport is slated to receive $228 million while Snohomish County’s Paine Field will see $16 million and Boeing Field/King County International will expect $6.8 million.

The bill earmarks $71 million to expand EV charging networks; $39 million to protect against wildfires. In addition, $4.7 billion is set for federal-aid highway apportioned programs and $605 million for bridge replacement and repairs.

West Virginia

Sen. Joe Manchin announced that President Biden’s infrastructure bill designates about $3 billion to repair West Virginia roads and highways; $500 million is set for bridges; and about $40 million for West Virginia airports.

More than $300 million is earmarked for public transportation while $600 million will go to broadband access; more than $475 million for water and wastewater upgrades; $100 to $200 million to cap orphaned oil and gas wells; and $700 million for abandoned mine land reclamation.

Additional West Virginia-specific funding is designated to reinvigorate coal communities, including a new program to build clean energy on current and former mine lands. Grants for manufacturers to build or retrofit facilities to produce or recycle energy products in communities that have seen coal mines or plants close, is also in the bill.

Wisconsin

The IIJA designates $841 million to improve water infrastructure; $5.2 billion for federal-aid highway programs; and $225 million for bridge repair and replacement, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.

Plus, $592 million is set aside for public transit; $79 million to support EV charging stations; $20 million to protect against wildfires; $18 million to protect against cyberattacks; and $198 million for infrastructure development at airports.

Wyoming Wyoming will see $110 billion for road and bridge projects; $66 billion for passenger and freight rail; $39 billion for public transit; and $25 billion for airports across the state.

Port infrastructure will receive $17 billion; transportation safety programs, $11 billion; electric vehicles, $7.5 billion; and revitalization of communities, $1 billion. Other infrastructure programs to benefit from Wyoming’s portion include broadband internet, $65 billion; power infrastructure, $73 billion; and clean drinking water, $55 billion

Resilience and Western water storage will receive $50 billion, while $21 billion will go to removal of pollution from water and soil, according to Big Horn Radio Network.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is eligible to receive $1.7 billion as part of the IIJA designation. Approximately $900 million is earmarked to rebuild roads and highways and $225 million for bridge replacement and repair

The Weekly Journal reports that in addition to roads and bridges, $455 million is slated for improvements to Puerto Rico’s public transportation programs and $13.6 million to support the expansion of an EV charging network on the island.

Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., awaits $355 million to replace lead water lines; $1.1 billion for federal highways; $225 million for bridges; and $17 million to build EV chargers. Axios reports that the bill reauthorizes Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority funding, $150 million annually.

Included in the IIJA bill is $238 million for the Chesapeake Bay Program, a regional partnership to restore the bay and reduce pollution.  CEG

Team Experience Plays Big Role On Bridges Project in N.Y.

The setting of the steel should take six to eight weeks to complete.

“Crane assembly took about four days,” said Day. “The crane came in on 49 tractor trailer loads of parts, boom sections and counterweight. We utilized Rig-All’s 400ton hydraulic crane to help assemble the 650 VPC. The crane’s 300-foot boom and large capacity will allow us to install all girders from one location.

“The 650 VPC has 881,800 lbs. of counterweight and a 350-ton crane block with an 11 part line fall. There are various lengths of girder components. The legs are 89 feet long and the total length of the roadway girder assembly is 500 feet.

“The steel is arriving on site at a rate of about five to six girders per-week. There are 35 permitted girder shipments and an additional 10 loads of miscellaneous steel components.”

The Structural Steel is fabricated by Canam Bridges in Claremont, N.H.

The pouring of the bridge deck is expected to begin in April and should take three days.

“Since the completion of steel erection won’t be until winter, the DOT and Tioga plan to place the deck in April to avoid curing issues or placement delays due to temperatures,” said Day. “Forming the deck in the winter would present additional safety issues, as well. After deck placement, the work remaining includes bridge approach slaps, sleeper slabs, armorless joint placement, blacktop placement, bridge barrier installation, guiderail, deck grooving and striping. Most of the grading, plantings and ditches have already been completed. The remainder of them that tie into the bridge structure will be completed in the spring.”

Tioga’s management team includes John Dillon, vice president and project manager; Jim Dillon, (demolition plan and erection procedure); Project Engineer Ryan Day; Superintendent Bill Vedder; and Superintendent Butch Amidon.

“Most of these members, as well as many crew members have worked together for 20 to 30 years or more,” said Day. “Everyone is familiar with each other and willing to do what’s necessary to get a project like this done. The crew on this job has done an excellent job throughout this project. Erecting steel like this in cold winter conditions isn’t easy. We give our guys a lot of credit for always getting the job done, especially through rough weather conditions.”

Peak days have 18 to 20 Tioga and subcontractor personnel. The major subcontractors include Interstate Reinforcing for furnish and installation of rebar, Keller North America for soil nail wall installation, KHM Incorporated for stabilization of rock slope with shotcrete, Northers Stud Welding for stud shear connectors and superstructure deck pans, Rommel Fence for pedestrian fencing around soil nail walls and

Pavilion Drainage Supply for guiderail, transition rail and signage. Other equipment being used includes a Komatsu PC 360LC-10 excavator, a Cat 930M loader, Genie

SB1501 boom lifts and a Cat 336E excavator. “Tioga employs full-time mechanics in addition to dealer mechanics,” said Day. “Our head mechanic works both on site and at our maintenance facility in Schuyler, N.Y. He is on site as needed for standard maintenance as well as repairs.” Tioga purchases and rents equipment from Lomma Crane & Rigging in South Kearny, N.J.; Mac Equipment in Albany; Anderson Equipment in Syracuse; Milton CAT in Syracuse; and Tracey Road Equipment in Syracuse.

“Our dealers are very responsive and helpful with all aspects of equipment rental,” said Day. “Our equipment manager, owners and project engineers have good relationships with our dealers through years of working cooperatively to utilize the correct size and capacity equipment for various size projects and tasks. They’re an important asset in our industry.”  CEG

Hoffman Equipment Touts New Manitowoc, Volvo Iron

A Hoffman Equipment open house guest takes a spin (and a lift) in the Manitowoc crane simulator. Guests enjoyed a BBQ lunch inside a tent at the Hoffman Equipment open house.

Representatives of Nordic Contracting, Kenville, N.J., took time to check out the specs on the Volvo EC750E excavator. The JCB 1CXT backhoe loader provides excellent maneuverability, an optional handheld tool auxiliary, as well as a universal quick hitch that is compatible with most skid steer attachments.

HOFFMAN from page 37 prominent display during the open house.

“JCB has the only skid steer tractor loader backhoe available in the world,” said Watters. “It’s a loader backhoe. You have a bucket in front and backhoe in the back, but on a skid steer carrier. Nobody else has that.”

Hoffman Equipment also is an Astec dealer and showcased one of the manufacturer’s newest machines — the FT2650 jaw crusher.

The open house was the first in person event Hoffman Equipment held after the grand reopening of the country following the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 and early 2021 and Watters was grateful to not only bring customers out to see equipment at its facility again, but also to simply to see them again and in such large numbers.

“We appreciate all of our customers and we appreciate them coming out,” he said. “We want to thank them for being here and for all their support. This our coming out party since COVID.”  CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2021 Construction Equipment Guide. All Rights Reserved.)
