ALEX LYON & SON LAUNCHES ITS 29TH ANNUAL FLORIDA AUCTIONS
Auction goers descended on the Sunshine State for the first day of the 2022 Florida Auctions and buyers were not discouraged as they perused items up for bid and made their decisions on purchases.
Alex Lyon & Son commenced its 29th annual event by hosting nine days of sales from Feb. 5 to 13 at its facility in Bushnell, Fla., featuring acres of used equipment from a variety of major manufacturers.
One of the top items at the Alex Lyon sale was a 1954 Kenworth CC523 day cab heavy tractor — a collectible. Another unique item on the block was an 8-wheeler Mudd-Ox amphibious vehicle.

Adam Brown (L) of Newman Tractor in Richwood, Ky., discusses this Morooka MST700VDR all-terrain tracked carrier with Ken Byrd, president of Morooka USA.

While Jack Lyon calls the auction from “the box,” Sammy Petrowsky of Sammy P. Auction Services, Plainfield, Conn., helps to scan the crowd to find the highest bidder. Late model mid-sized Cat excavators were of interest to this duo of machine buyers.

Getting an early start on their machine research are Bill Dempsey (L) and Andy Good of Northstar Asphalt, North Canton, Ohio. Testing a late model Morooka MST-1500VD tracked dumper (L-R) are Donnie Nusbaum, DN Excavating, Albany, N.Y., and Jeff Abele and Bradford Kosich of Abele Tractor & Equipment, Albany, N.Y.

Guy Selinka (L) and Sean Jordan of Streamline Financial Services, Atlanta, Ga., set up shop between a couple of artic trucks to assist buyers with their financing questions and needs. Acres of construction equipment sits ready to be auctioned off at Alex Lyon & Son’s sale in Bushnell, Fla.

Ken (L) and Roger McHugh, co-owners of Brookside Equipment Sales in Phillipston, Mass., were excited to see this collectible 1954 Kenworth CC523 day cab trailer.

BRIDGE from page 92
build phase of the project is well under way, and construction activities are continuing on both sides of the border on all components, which include the Canadian and U.S. Ports of Entry, the Michigan Interchange and the bridge itself.
There are a number of challenges for workers. Crews are dealing with different jurisdictions in two countries; therefore, officials must adhere to the regulations in Windsor and Detroit, Mich., and Ontario, and federally those of Canada and the United States.
“As an example, we must follow requirements and the commitments of the approvals under environmental legislation from Canada, the United States, Ontario and Michigan. As well, we must consider mobility of some workers allowing them to work on both sides of the border, the difference in metric and imperial measurements, currency exchange, trades certification in both countries.”
Keeping everyone safe during construction is crucial, according to Butler.
“Our employees and contractors are professionals, many of whom have worked on multi-year projects in the past. The health and well-being of our staff and workers is our top priority for WDBA and Bridging North America, and remains at the forefront. This is especially important during these unprecedented times.”
Occasional traffic disruptions are required as part of the construction.
“We are committed to lessening the impact of construction on local traffic and notify motorists and local residents about traffic disruptions, detours and road closures in a timely manner to give them the opportunity to make informed decisions about their travel.
“Traffic disruptions are published on our website and posted on our social media channels. Local residents and businesses also are advised in advance of any significant construction which may impact traffic. Every effort will be made to reduce inconvenience to drivers, residents and the business community.”
Butler said the once-in-a-generation effort has required a great deal of planning and preparation.
“Given the scope and magnitude of this project, and the closeness of the project to the river, it was necessary to undertake a significant amount of preparatory work before construction could begin. This work included excavation, placement of wick drains and surcharge fill placement to ensure a solid base on which we could build, as well as significant utility relocations.”
At the U.S. Port of Entry, major earthwork, including excavation, placement of wick drains and surcharge fill placement in preparation for building foundations, has been completed. Construction of the POE buildings and facilities has commenced and will continue over the next few years. On the Michigan Interchange, work continues to focus on the reconstruction of the Springwells Street, Livernois Avenue and Clark Street road bridges.
The tower legs on the United States’ side are now in excess of 250 ft. (76 m), approximate to the height of a 20 to 25 story building. Work also has started on the concrete foundations for the customs commercial building and teams are doing survey and layout work on the main building on the U.S. side. Work will continue on building the POE and tower and I-75 interchange and associated improvements.
Approximately 2 million cu. yds. of dirt will be moved during construction. Main materials on the job include iron, steel and concrete. Heavy machinery includes dozers, loaders, excavators, hydraulic cranes, crawler cranes and pile driving rigs.
Among the more visible pieces of equipment are the two massive tower cranes, which along with the actual towers being built, are perhaps the most visible signs of the construction activity.
For those on the job, the elements are of particular concern during the coldest months.
“Weather is always a factor when you have a year-round construction schedule and severe weather, which may impact construction,” said Butler. “Construction activities are planned keeping weather forecasts in mind. As an example, concrete cannot be poured during extreme cold temperatures. As well, extreme heat can be a factor. We take measures to ensure that worker safety is paramount during extreme heat or cold temperatures.”
As with any major infrastructure project, it takes years before the first shovel can go into the ground.
As for the most rewarding part, said Butler, “I think for our staff and for our contractors, it’s the pride in working on one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America. Frankly, it’s not every day that a new bridge is built between Canada and the United States, and certainly not one of the magnitude and scope as the Gordie Howe International Bridge.” CEG

The towers will each require 353,400 cu. ft. of concrete and 4,960 tons of steel rebar for construction. Once completed, the full weight of just one tower will be about 66 million lbs.

TRUCKING from page 96
The Departments of Labor and Transportation launched the 90-Day Trucking Apprenticeship Challenge as a strategy for helping employers and organized labor partners develop and retain a skilled workforce, according to the White House.
Beside the 100 employers expanding drive apprenticeships, more than 20 employers are already close to launching brand new apprenticeships.
This will put thousands of new skilled and safe drivers on the road in good trucking jobs trained using the “earn while you learn” registered apprenticeship model, according to the White House.
Labor, transportation and industry partners continue to meet with employers, industry groups and labor organizations to support the development of apprenticeships across the industry.
The Women of Trucking Advisory Board, mandated in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, was created to increase the number of women in trucking.
The board will review and report on challenges facing woman drivers and those interested in joining the profession, including barriers to entry, on-the-job safety risks, mentorship, quality training and opportuni-

The White House also convened a virtual roundtable to gather input on how to build a more inclusive and equitable workplace for women in the trucking industry.
Also created was a mandated task force to investigate predatory truck leasing arrangements with DOL and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
The FMCSA, Labor and the CFPB formed a truck leasing task force to identify actions that could make leases more equitable and transparent. The task force will be focused on inequitable terms and transparency in common truck leasing arrangements.
It will review truck leasing arrangements for ports that involve a requirement for trucks to convert to zero emissions, as well as loans and other arrangements between incoming driver trainees and training schools or trucking companies to understand instances of outsized and unanticipated debt for incoming drivers.
The group also will look into predatory truck leasing arrangements with DOL and in coordination with the CFPB.
Two studies to explore issues of driver pay and unpaid detention time were launched. FMCSA released a scope of work for a study on driver detention time and its impact on safety and compensation.
This study will use a cross section of electronic logging device data to provide a detailed understanding of wait times for drivers across jurisdictions and industry sectors.
Data used will be aggregated and anonymized to ensure driver privacy. The study also will review how detention time influences the likelihood of a crash or an hours-of-service violation.
The Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot also was launched during the 30 days. And, more than $32 million in funding to improve the CDL licensing process was earmarked for states.
FMCSA and the Transportation Research Board will study the impacts of methods of driver compensation on safety and driver retention. The study will review the safety effect of payments made per load or per mile versus payments per hour.
The study also will review the amount of time a truck driver spends away from home, driving and detained to determine true working hours, and then determine true hourly wages.
“In some parts of the trucking industry, 90 percent of drivers turn over each year,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
New Partnership... Leica, SANY Expand Machine Control, Increase Efficiency

SANY dealers nationwide can now offer customers a variety of Leica Geosystems machine control solutions through a joint Technology Access Program.
Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, announced a collaboration with SANY America to simplify the adoption and support of Leica Geosystems’ machine control technology on SANY excavators and motor graders.
Enhancing SANY’s equipment with Leica Geosystems’ cutting-edge but easy-to-use machine control technology enables greater precision for excavating and grading work and allows machine operators at various skill levels to increase their productivity while lessening the intensity of tasks, according to the company. This helps keep workers safe and results in less wear and tear on machines.
The companies launched a joint Technology Access Program whereby SANY dealers nationwide can offer customers a variety of machine control solutions through their leasing and purchasing agreements, with installation and support by certified Leica Geosystems dealers.
“This Technology Access Program will make deploying technology seamless and painless for operators,” said Troy Dahlin, vice president, heavy construction, at Leica Geosystems US/Canada.
The Technology Access Program also offers SANY customers and dealers the ability to experience Leica Geosystems’ machine control technologies at the SANY Digs demo area, located in the SANY America headquarters near Atlanta, Ga.
“Our customers and dealers want straightforward, streamlined solutions that make working with a mixed fleet easy and simple,” said Gabe Weiss, director of marketing of SANY. “This program is built on feedback from our dealer partner network and will provide operators with a technology option for grade control and dedicated access to the Leica Geosystems dealer support network.”
