From the editor…

T

he first day of summer brought welcome rain to the Lakeside area, and continuing intermittent rainfall brought hopes that the drought might be broken. When summer arrived, the level of Logan Martin Lake was about two feet below the normal summer pool and continuing to drop. The Alabama Marine Police cautioned boaters to watch for underwater hazards and shoals that could allow the unwary to run aground. Known hazards are marked, and some that have emerged as the water dropped have been marked with temporary buoys. The rain in late June helped, at least temporarily, with the water deficit. Although the entire state remained in some stage of drought, the lake area came within one inch of normal rainfall before the weather pattern returned to the usual clear mornings and pop-up afternoon showers. As long as we’re not in a severe drought that robs farmers of their hard-won crops or cowering in fear of another tornado, this is the kind of weather lakeside residents can really enjoy. After a strenuous morning, what could be better than spending a lazy afternoon watching a short-lived thunderstorm on the lake? In July, there’s no place like Lakeside.

Traveling the Coosa

OvertheRapids Our intrepid kayaker finds a whitewater adventure a little farther down the Coosa

hen people think of the Coosa River, they probably imagine a leisurely ride on a houseboat or relaxing along the bank with a fishing pole or maybe zipping down the water on a personal watercraft. But most people wouldn’t think of whitewater. That’s right — rapids — the fun stuff. Only a few miles downstream from Logan Martin Lake, along the Alabama Scenic River Trail, you can actually find a Class 3 rapid by the name of Moccasin Gap. “Local people don’t even have a clue this is here,” said Mike Goolsby, 61, who recently paddled along with me down the only whitewater stretch on the Coosa River. was about a six-and-a-half-mile paddle from below Jordan Dam to the Coosa Outdoor Center takeout, a.k.a. the “Dirt Farm.” What a trip — what a blast! Normally my kayak trips pick up where I left off, but this time I decided to begin my Alabama Scenic River Trail trip further south, near Wetumpka. There were only a few days remaining for the 8,000cubic-feet-per-second recreation flow release below Jordan Dam, so I thought it was now or never for some exciting whitewater kayaking along the Coosa. Alabama Power Co. has since cut back the flows, but

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

Nick Caldwell, of Titus, maneuvers his kayak in a Class 3 rapid.

people can still kayak, canoe and make this journey on a siton-top kayak during weekends. From April 1 to June 15, Alabama Power releases a daily flow of 8,000 cfs from Jordan Dam. From June 15 to Oct. 31, Alabama Power is required to release a recreational flow only on Saturdays and Sundays, alternating the flow among 4,000, 6,000 and 8,000 cfs. With drought beginning to take hold on Alabama, those high flows that provide whitewater could creep even lower. Alabama Power also releases a 10,000 cfs recreational flow from Jordan Dam during the Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day holidays.

Matt Thorton, of Titus, surfs some rapids along the Coosa River.

“I go down there three to four times a year, depending on whether or not they are releasing,” said Joan Steed, of Lincoln, who is an avid whitewater kayaker. “It’s fun for me at 6,0008,000 (cfs).” I met Joan at Southern Trails, next to the Coosa Outdoor Center, which rents sit-on-top kayaks and canoes. I always say you never know who you’re going to meet along the Coosa River. I’ve heard of Joan and knew she paddled whitewater, but I’d never met her face to face. Steed was helping out with a fundraiser for the Coosa River Paddling Club, which was hosting a big whitewater festival and competition the day I paddled. Southern Trails, which sells camping, hiking, mountain-climbing and whitewater gear, and the Coosa Outdoor Center are both owned and operated by Lonnie Carden, who is well-known in the paddling community. Montgomery attorney Michael Strickland, who is president of the Coosa River Paddling Club, said the stretch of whitewater I recently paddled was once nearly dry and held only stagnant water. Efforts by the paddling community helped secure the flow and whitewater opportunities along the Coosa below Jordan Dam. Strickland said Carden played a big role in that effort. “Without Lonnie Carden, that river would still be dry today,” Strickland said. I, for one, am glad it’s not. That section of the river provides a glimpse of what the Coosa once looked like, before there were lakes and dams along the Coosa River basin. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s neat to experience and see what the river was like 50 or so years ago. “I don’t get down there as often as I like, but I love it down there,” said Joan, who along with her husband, Skip, lives along Choccolocco Creek, which feeds into Logan Martin Lake. She said unlike other whitewater recreation areas, such as the ones in Tennessee, the Coosa River water is warm, not ice cold, and it’s not as crowded. Joan, who has whitewater paddled for 12 years, said it’s a beautiful ecosystem, and most visitors will notice the Spanish moss draped over the trees along the banks of this whitewater section of the Coosa. She said this whitewater run is ideal for beginners. There’s plenty of calm water between each set of rapids in

“I met one person from Virginia,” he said. Many kayakers play in the whitewater in freestyle boats, doing spins, flips and other neat kayaking tricks. It’s fun to watch a good whitewater freestyle kayaker in action. “Quite honestly, I was very surprised at this,” said Elizabeth Kommersmith, of Mobile. This was her first trip to the whitewater section of the Coosa River. “Everybody has been very friendly here,” she said. I agree, and it was fun getting to know first-hand some of the whitewater features and rapids like May Tagger, Surf ’s Up, Baby Gap, Wave to Play, Pipeline, Corn Creek Rapid, Whirlpool and the feature Class 3 rapid, Moccasin Gap. The Coosa Outdoor Center/Southern Trails also offers camping at $5 a head, which is pretty darn good. Children younger than 13 and accompanied by a parent can camp for free. The Coosa Outdoor Center has about 15 campsites with picnic tables and grills, along with a place to pitch a tent.

The Wetumpka outfitter also shuttles kayakers and their boats to the put-in for only $5. You just leave your vehicle at the Dirt Farm, the takeout. If you have any questions about the flows or would like to take a trip down the whitewater section of the Coosa River, give Lonnie Carden a call at the Coosa Outdoor Center/Southern Trails at 334-2015510 or 334-567-3788. It’s a pretty neat experience. As for me, I look forward to my next trip down the Alabama Scenic River Trail, more likely in calmer water. So until then, have a safe and wonderful time on the water.

Ahoy, Mateys. There’s treasure to be had on Grand Island.

“W

e’ve had treasures here before, but the first one had a curse inside it,” Jim Regan said. The original treasure chest is said to have been stolen more than 500 years ago from the Dutch East India Trading Company by pirates that were porting out of waterways emptying into Mobile Bay. The chest was returned to its home on Grand Island on Logan Martin Lake on a Thursday in June. The voyage, headed up by Captain Regan, saw a crew of four on the historic afternoon. 14

The journey was dubbed a success when the treasure was returned and the flag restored. The bamboo flagpole flies the Jolly Roger, the skull-and-crossbones pirate’s flag, signaling that the 75-by-50-foot island falls under the protection of all pirates — past and present. The children of the lake are said to be the rightful owner of the treasures within the chest. “If you take something, you have to put something back, and people remember that,” Regan said. “The parents tell me all the time kids just come from all over the lake to get at this thing. They leave stuff and they drop stuff off.”

But before the chest could be returned, it had to be restored. Local artisan Shirley Kujan, a real estate agent for Re/Max Realty Pros, practices her love for art, which she calls “just a hobby,” on the side, although the restoration of the chest took only a couple of evenings. “It’s a great addition to the island,” Kujan said. “It’s kept with treasures for the kids to take, so it really is a treasure

island. I’m happy to be a part of it.” The grand island of Grand Island is a popular destination, complete with a sandy beach, enabling boaters to dock with ease. But the relaxing atmosphere can easily hide the history of the treasure chest on a sunny summer afternoon — a chest complete with a 14th century depiction of the Dutch East India Company’s insignias, Captain Morgan and a skull and

crossbones. Stashed within the chest is a plethora of jewels, hidden among golden rocks. Since the treasure chest has been returned, the children of the lake can profit from the jewels within for years to come. “The East India Company was one of the Dutch that settled in South Africa,” said local lake resident Ben Dugger. “They were going to the Spice Islands, and South Africa was halfway. It had a wonderful bay down there. They set up that place as a point to sail. They would stop there to get fresh food and prepare the ships, then make the trip up to Indonesia, or the Spice Islands as they called them then.” Regan said the Dutch East India Company, one of the first international trading companies, had enormous influence on most of the world at the time.

With the lost treasure restored, ready for the children of the lake to enjoy it in the summer months, and the flag established, Grand Island is safe for children and adults alike. It’s even suited for the next adventurer embarking on a game of geocaching. Regan looked around the island and said, “As soon as you get out here, your imagination starts firing. The kids are crazy about it, and that’s what fires me up.”

It’s been said that Grand Island is the most popular place on the lake, next to the cliffs. And Grand Island is even home to another treasure: geocaching. Geocaching, an outdoor treasure-hunting game, sends its participants to destinations all over the world. Using their GPS-enabled devices and swift navigational techniques, the players take off in search of hidden containers known as “geocaches.” “There’s a sign-in here, and they sign in that they’ve collected it, and they take a trinket and they leave a trinket just to prove you were there,” Regan said of the geocache on his island. The treasure seekers then check off their successes on the World Wide Web. “The hard thing about this one is that you have to have a boat to get here,” he said. The destinations are rated online on their level of difficulty. Of the two most difficult containers to locate, one is said to lie within the Marianas Trench, the other at the International Space Station.

Year after year, local artists hold workshops for young people who wish to flex their creative muscles in a variety of different mediums. Entler said that many of the young people who get too old to participate in the camp end up coming back as helpers for the younger children.

“We always make sure they have something to do,” Entler said The main thing Entler wants art camp students to learn is “a love for art, and being creative. You would hope they would develop a life-long appreciation for it.” For Linda Bassett, an artist who will serve as a glass and pottery instructor, this camp experience will be her first. “We’re mainly working with color, and they’re going to make a type of sun catcher for them to catch the light and take home,” Bassett said. Materials like glass for Bassett’s class were donated by the artists themselves or outside sources. Bassett said the older children will learn how to cut the glass, and the younger children will have the cut glass waiting for them. “I enjoy what we do here at the gallery. I enjoy showing the children how to play with color,” Bassett said. “I might as well learn a few things with them.”

Not Big Enough Shelby Wages’ 47-pound catfish has brought her acclaim, but she believes a bigger fish is waiting in Logan Martin Lake for her to catch. By KENNY FARMER Have you ever caught a 32-pound catfish? How about a 47-pound catfish? Well, 13-year-old Shelby Wages of Athens has already done both, and now she has her sights set on bigger fish. Wages caught the fish at the Logan Martin home of her grandparents, Doug and Dena Wages, who live on Forest Drive in Pell City. Wages caught the 47-pound catfish during spring break this year as she was fishing with her father, Branden Wages. Shelby and her dad used live bait and tied steel leaders to their

25-pound-test line. Shelby said when she realized she had a bite, she believed it was a turtle or alligator gar that had been hooked. “I wasn’t quite sure what it was,” she said. “I just knew it was big.” When she finally got the fish up to her granddad’s pier, her father grabbed a deep-sea hook “to get a good grip on it.” With a little help from her dad, Shelby managed to get the fish onto the pier. Shelby fought the fish for about 30 minutes before finally

“It put up a huge fight; but I was determined to get it.” — Shelby Wages getting it out of the water. “It put up a huge fight,” she said. “But I was determined to get it.” She said her first thought upon seeing the fish was, “Oh my God! How much does this thing weigh?” She immediately realized this was bigger than the 32-pound catfish she had once reeled in. “I was only 10 when I caught the 32-pound catfish, and it also put up a good fight,” she said. “But I’d have to say catching the 47-pound catfish was much harder and took longer to reel in.” Shelby wasn’t the only one who was amazed by her catch. She has received a lot of attention since reeling in the big cat. You can see pictures of Shelby and her fish on the websites of Field and Stream magazine, All About Fishing and Catfish1. Her story was also covered by FOX 6 news in Birmingham and

Huntsville’s WAAY 31 news, and her photo was featured in her hometown newspaper in Athens. “I’m only 13, and I can be Googled on the Internet,” she said. “That’s pretty cool.” She added that she would like to one day make the cover of a magazine so that she would have something to show her kids and grandkids. “That would be so awesome.” Shelby said she has spent much of her life swimming and fishing in Logan Martin Lake. She said her dad got her interested in fishing, beginning when she was “old enough to hold a rod and reel.” Shelby said she goes to her grandparents’ house as often as she can in hopes of catching an even bigger fish. “I’m hoping one day I will beat my own record and catch one even larger, she said. “There’s one out there.”

Lakeside Living in Style

LoftyIdeas

Gary and Cathy Pryor’s timber-frame house overlooking Logan Martin Lake has 25-foot ceilings and lofts in the kids’ rooms.

T

his is clearly a place where there’s one thing, well really, two things in mind. First, it’s fun. This is a place for an active family with two young ones who like to stay on the go. Secondly, it’s a respite, from busy careers and days packed with lots to do. Gary and Cathy Pryor look forward to their getaways on Logan Martin Lake, and from the time they arrive at the home they built in Water’s Edge on the Talladega County side of the lake, activity abounds. The Pryors are both “water people,” and their children, 30

Jack, age 12, and Julia, age 8, happily follow suit. There’s skiing and wakeboarding with the Pryors’ Malibu Wake Setter, Jet Skis for setting out on other adventures on the water, a curved slide for getting into the water in a very fun way and all kinds of things to do. After buying their lot, the Pryors built their two-story boathouse and dock first. It has ample room for the boat and other water toys, and up top, there’s a large deck area for sunning and visiting and taking in the deep water view. Furnishings include chairs for lounging or having meals

By LAURA NATION-ATCHISON Photos by BOB CRISP and a patio umbrella for shade. There’s a lower deck, too, providing even more space for enjoying the water. Stone steps lead up to the house the Pryors built on top of a bluff, adding to the impact of their Logan Martin view. The house is a timber frame structure, and warm exposed beams frame the ceilings. The house has three levels, and entry from the lake is from the lower-level living area. A pair of matching mahogany double doors frames the stacked-stone gas log fireplace in the center of the back wall.

Gary and Cathy Pryor chose to build a home on Logan Martin after enjoying the lake with their houseboat. The Pryors and their two children, Jack and Julia, love the lake for its recreational opportunities.

The doors’ style with smaller panes at the top is repeated in the series of floor-to-ceiling windows on one side of the room. Over the double doors are paned windows as well, reaching up into the 16-foot-high pitched ceiling. There’s a natural wood mantle over the arched opening of the fireplace. Above the mantle is a large flat-screen television with surround sound. Walls are planed poplar, with stout beams in between the panels of planks. Floors on the lower level are deep brown stained concrete. A seating area includes deep chocolate-colored leather July 2011 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes

couches placed around a round, wood coffee table, its legs curved inward. In the center, the Pryors placed a large Indian-print rug in shades of terracotta and gold with dashes of ivory and sage. At the far end of the room is a galley kitchen inset with a bar framed with a pair of antique shutters that can be open or closed. Three sets of custom-built double-door cabinets along the rear wall reach from floor to ceiling, made of oak and stained dark with a mission-style influence. The deep sink and antique bronze fixtures are set into the bar, which offers seating for four. The downstairs kitchen includes stainless appliances and textured black granite countertops with space for working. The lower level is where the children’s bedrooms are. Julia’s faces the water and has a white spindle bed with a bright pink-flowered coverlet and matching pillows. She has a table and chair for playing games and a deep upholstered chair in ivory for relaxing or reading. The room includes a loft playroom, reached by a ship style wooden ladder attached to the platform. There’s space in the loft for playing with friends, and beanbag chairs make cozy places to snuggle up. Light linen curtains frame the windows that look out to the water. Stacked along the top of a tall chest is Julia’s collection of teddy bears. A framed animal print featuring an assortment of lions and leopards and other creatures hangs on a wall. Jack’s room is reached through a shared bath and also has entry to the downstairs living area. The bath has two deep square sinks fitted with antique bronze hardware. Matching framed round mirrors hang over the sinks. Jack’s room has nautical touches as well, with his bed hung with stout ropes like those used on board ships. His room has a loft, too, with a ladder for going up, and there’s a cool fire pole for coming down. A wall-sized picture of a puppy on a surfboard hangs over the bed. From the downstairs, there’s a double flight of wooden stairs going up to the main foyer and entry. The 25 steps are built with spaces in between, giving the stairway an open feel. Two wrought iron chandeliers hang over the landings, with eight lights fitted into the pieces. An arched mahogany door proclaims the substantial front entrance, and garage doors are done in a similar design,

reminiscent of a castle style. The main entry is where visitors are likely to be greeted by the family pet, Zoey, a friendly gentle giant of a dog, half Labrador and half Great Dane. The peaked roof and its many angles and pitches are covered with wooden shakes, while the exterior walls are hardy wood, supported with stacked stone. The living room is directly above the downstairs living area, and the same stone chimney continues up the wall facing the water. Over this mantle, too, is a large flat-screen television with surround sound for enjoying entertainment at home. Double doors lead out onto a deck with an outstanding view of Logan Martin, as its perch is high atop the hill and on the second level of the house. The fireplace from the living room is double sided, with an opening for use on the deck side of the wall. Rattan rocking chairs are placed on the deck for enjoying a sunrise or sunset or just taking in the activity and wildlife on the lake. Soft leather seating in the room includes matching couches in a coffee shade, along with two butter-colored leather chairs around a broad coffee table made with wide wooden planks. Underneath the seating area is a Native American-style rug, with shades of deep reds and browns woven into a neutral background. A decorative lamp continues the emphasis on wood in the 34

room, its base a natural chunk of interesting wood. Ceilings repeat the construction in the downstairs living room, but with 25-foot wooden ceilings with large exposed beams and trusses, connected with wooden pegs. The structures were built on the ground, Pryor explains, then hoisted into position using a crane. Pryor, who is knowledgeable about home construction, took an active role in building the house, working with Birmingham architect Kelvin Terry and wood designer Scott Schoel. All of the wood designs in the house were created by Schoel - the cabinetry, walls, timbers and doors. “I knew what we wanted, and Kelvin drew up some plans,” he said. “He had worked with me before. Some things were his ideas, and some were ours.” There were definitely changes made along the way, Pryor said, throughout the building process, which took about a year. Using overhead space in the downstairs bedrooms for the children as lofts was one of the things that just kind of evolved during construction, Cathy Pryor said. “We thought we needed to so something with all that space, so the lofts were designed,” she said. A wall of tall windows topped with panes of smaller glass goes along the outer side wall in the living room, and the room opens into the main kitchen. A dining table and chairs are arranged along the wall, and a

Floor-to-ceiling windows line the far wall, with another window of the same design at one side of the bed. The decorative iron bed has an antique design, and is covered with a white spread and shams with a delicate leaf pattern overlay. A plump couch in a light ochre shade is used in a sitting area adjacent to the bedroom and an Indian print area rug in earth tones is on the wood floor. An adjoining bath includes a tub and shower with a pebbled floor along with a tiled tub. The vanity is chestnut brown granite and holds a gray stone vessel sink. Walls in the bath are poplar. The Pryors say they love their time on the lake, and Cathy Pryor is quick to give her husband much of the credit for the way the house turned out.

As for its interior touches, she credits Tubbs and his staff, David Walker and Shawn Bean. “We wish we could just stay out here every day,” she said. It’s the life they love on Logan Martin, a peaceful setting, lots of water sports and time for the family to have together.

He took the first step. Always There Took Him the Rest of the Way. Gene Davenport values his independence. But when he faced a difficult recovery from back surgery, he knew he’d need help. “My daughter lives in Texas, and I did not want to impose on her,” he recalls, “so when someone recommended Accordance, it sounded like the perfect solution.” Hard to believe for a man of his generation, but Mr. Davenport genuinely welcomed our caregiver’s support. “From the first day in the hospital, I knew Sherri Sparks was a perfect match for me,” he continues. “When I went home, she coordinated her schedule around mine. Then she handled all my daily personal needs—from assistance in dressing, to meal preparation and light housekeeping, to running errands. “What impressed me most of all, though, was her positive attitude. It had a huge impact on my recovery — and I can honestly say I’m better now than I was before surgery.” For short-term or long-term In Home Care: When it’s someone in your family, call Accordance. Boaters take to the lake for the Riverside poker run By ELSIE HODNETT

G

ood friends, a lake-worthy vessel and eight stops along the Riverside shoreline made for a fun game of cards — poker run style. “My favorite part of the poker run is the socializing and the camaraderie,” said Shannon Hamilton. Hamilton, her husband, Guy, Ernie Neumann and Bobby and Nell Parker crewed one of the many boats at the third-annual Riverside Poker Run, hosted by the Riverside Beautification Organization. Each of the 68 participants at this year’s poker run received a map with seven docks along the riverside shoreline. Players received one card at each dock. A mystery dock, the “Redneck Riviera,” offered the chance to purchase one additional card — but only if you could find it. 40

“I love the mystery dock — very unique,” said Debbie Tsimpides, who participated in the poker run for the second year with her husband Leon. Tsimpides said she also enjoyed the refreshments offered at several docks — shaved ice, Popsicles and other treats. “Everyone’s been real friendly,” she said. “It has been fun. It’s nice meeting neighbors you don’t get to see.” For the Parkers, meeting people at each dock station and spending time with friends on the boat were highlights of the day. “This is my third year to participate in the poker run,” Neumann said. “I haven’t won yet, just spent money. But it’s a donation.” As the boats met back at Riverside Landing, there were

hotdogs and drinks and music, as well as the chance to chat with friends and neighbors. While the poker hands were being judged, numerous door prizes donated by local vendors were given out. First place went to April Womack with a straight flush. Second place went to Larry Payne with four aces, queen high. Third place went to Charlotte Summerford with four aces, 10 high. “We had a good turnout, considering the weather,” said Riverside Beautification Organization president Cathe Walker. “It is always a fun time. We raised a good bit of money for the Riverside Beautification Organization with the poker run, and also had some nice donations.” Walker said she wanted to thank all the participants, the local vendors who donated door prizes and Jimmy Pollard for cooking the hotdogs. “It was a very successful poker run,” she said. “Hopefully it will be even better next year.”

Lakeside Dining

Lunch With A Hug A meal at Huggy’s is just like Sunday dinner at Grandma’s. Keith “Huggy” Humphreys and wife Susan opened Huggy’s Diner at Lakeside landing April 1 and later Huggy’s 2 at Surfside Marina.

By CHRIS NORWOOD Photos by BRIAN SCHOENHALS

K

eith “Huggy” Humphreys, 6 feet 3 inches, earned his nickname playing high school football, and started a professional sports career with a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Cardinals. Who knew he would end up in the restaurant business? According to his wife Susan, an arm injury ended his baseball career prematurely. He worked as a cook at Johnny Ray’s for a while eight to 10 years ago, but more recently he felt like he wanted to get back into the business. “We had our midlife crisis,” she said. “My background is in marketing, which is helpful for this. We left Trussville and came here.” Huggy’s Diner opened at Lakeside Landing April 1, and Huggy’s 2 is now doing business at Surfside Marina. “We like to keep it simple,” Susan explained. “Huggy’s 2 is more like a backyard cookout. You dress your own sandwiches and everything. We’re right on the water, and the view is just 46

phenomenal. It looks like Palm Beach or something. Logan Martin Lake really is a well-kept secret.” The second location, specializing in hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken salad sandwiches and sausage sandwiches with onions and peppers, is open on weekends from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Labor Day. Brownies, soft drinks and chips are also available. The Diner, open for breakfast and lunch, is almost as casual. “We’re all about the homemade breakfast and lunch,” Susan explained. “For breakfast, we’ve got handmade biscuits, pancakes, French toast, etc. For lunch, we have a meat plus three every day except Saturday for $6.29, and we have a $5 lunch special. Everything’s fresh, just like Grandma’s on Sunday.” Specials here include hotdogs, chicken sandwiches or wraps, ham and grilled cheese on Texas toast with fries and other diner classics. Outdoor seating is available, but you might

want to check out the décor inside before heading for dining al fresco. “We have hand-painted art on the walls, and we have Tshirts, huggers and things like that, too. We want it to be a really fun place, where people can just come relax and meet people. You might come in as a customer, but you’ll leave as a friend.” Of particular interest is the hand-painted wall of fame, listing the names of individuals, companies, families and organizations that have donated to various causes the Humphreys support. “We wanted to be able to give back,” Susan explained. “We

had been collecting for seniors, but recently we’ve been trying to help out a family with 13 children between the ages of 4 and 26. They lost their father in the hurricane. We donate to them ourselves, too, but for those who have donated $1,000 or more, their name gets painted on the wall. So it’s a unique piece of artwork as well.” The diner also cultivates a family atmosphere, serving no alcohol. Huggy’s Diner is open Mondays through Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is located at the far end of Lakeside Landing, next the package store.

Lakeside Agent Spotlight

LV2SELL

Caran Wilbanks’ license plate says it all. By ELSIE HODNETT Caran Wilbanks

T

he satisfaction comes from matching buyers with the perfect home. “I love to see the smiles on their face,” said Caran Wilbanks, with RE/MAX Realty Pros in Pell City. Wilbanks said she obtained her real estate license in 1990. “I was working at AmSouth in the trust department and was married to a home builder,” she said. “He talked me into real estate — he could build them and I could sell them.” Wilbanks said she went to work for First Real Estate until, through a merger, it became RealtySouth. “When RealtySouth closed their Pell City office, I went to work for RE/MAX Realty Pros in 2003,” she said. “I love Pell City. It’s so easy to sell here.” Wilbanks said her knowledge of Logan Martin Lake also comes in quite handy. “We moved here when I was in the fourth grade,” she said. “I know the lake from end to end. If a client is out on the water and sees a home for sale that they like, they can describe the area to me, and I know where they are at.” Wilbanks said the Pell City area offers a wide variety of properties for sale, from lake property and

farms or acreage to mobile homes and subdivisions. “I enjoy selling lake houses, but I love to sell them all,” she said. Wilbanks said selling homes allows her to meet great, interesting people. “I have become close friends with some of them,” she said. “There is great satisfaction from finding them a home. For some people, there is the joy of seeing them in their first home. For others, it is helping them find a larger home when their family expands and they need more room.” Wilbanks served as president of the St. Clair County Association of Realtors twice, president of the Greater Pell City Chamber of Commerce twice, has been nominated for the Greater Pell City Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award, was the St. Clair County Association of Realtors Realtor of the Year, won the RE/MAX Cooperative Spirit Award, is in the RE/MAX 100 Percent Club and has participated in numerous local civic events. “I just love to sell,” she said. “There is no house too big or too small. It’s why my tag says ‘LV2SELL.’”
