The latest in a series of suspense novels from the writing team of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child is a rollicking read. The cliffhanger ending of Gideon’s Sword sets up what’s promised to be a series featuring new lead character Gideon Crew. And he’s a fascinating study in contradictions that would delight any good therapist. When he was 12, he watched his father gunned down by police, accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Eight years later, on her deathbed, Gideon’s mother tells him

the truth about his father, and Gideon’s quest for justice — and revenge — begins. Gideon’s Sword is more than just a spellbinding tale. It’s smart — wickedly so — and clever without a trace of arrogance. The characters are convincingly real — kind and caring, flawed and tragic. As Gideon hunts down a Chinese scientist and an apparently new weapon of mass destruction, the authors bring to life a side of New York City rarely seen — including a nail-biting standoff at a potter’s field maintained by inmates on an island in Long Island Sound. The novel is perfectly paced and a must-read for any true fan of suspense. Its only shortcoming is that it’s all over too soon.

using good old Southern ingenuity in an opening chapter both hilarious and truthful enough to echo Childress at his best. Scenes follow that validate the promise of that initial chapter. But there is the nagging feeling that the novel just might not be sure where it’s intending to go. It is so intricately plotted that seams start to show. Sometimes turns of plot seem too coincidental. Sometimes Childress appears intent on including every Southern contrivance he can summon up. Sometimes he seems to be setting up Georgia and her need to “undo” her life as emblematic of the struggles of the modern South. But perhaps this is just unnecessary nit-picking. After all, any reader willing to overlook such quibbling will be genuinely entertained by the tomfoolery that both Georgia Bottoms and Mark Childress are capable of. Touchstone announced Wednesday that Jermaine Jackson’s You are Not Alone: Michael: Through a Brother’s Eye will be released this fall. Touchstone, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, promises a “faithful and loving portrait,” but one with “no subject off limits.” Jackson spoke in 2003 of wanting to write a memoir and jackson reports surfaced again after Michael’s death, in 2009. iPad 2 hard to find, but worth it It’s tough being a nerd in a town not high on technology. My gripe comes from the experience of acquiring the second-generation iPad on the day it was released. First of all, I’m a bit peeved at Apple for not providing preorders for the device online. I would have been more than willing to wait a couple of days to have the piece of mind that one was on its way. Chris The company Pittman instead made the iSpy product available to purchase on the day of release at 3 a.m. The awful timing, combined with the wait in shipment, convinced me to try and nab one locally. I mean, I’d have a Best Buy, a Target and a Wal-Mart within arms reach of one another. Surely I’d be able to score one without an issue. Not so much. I had planned to head to Best Buy first as they were using a ticket system. Employees were handing out vouchers that would allow the purchase of an iPad at 5 p.m. No worries crossed my mind until I pulled into the parking lot at around 4:30. A small line had formed in front of the store. The chances of getting a device were still very high, as many websites had reported that the chain would get 150-200 for each store. Well, not this Best Buy. I found myself in the 17th spot of a line that could only fulfill 15 wishes. Drat. Off to Target, then. The electronics department had six people in a makeshift line of sorts. One gentleman kept asking me if they had any of the 3G models. I shrugged. Finally a sales representative comes to the line and states that the store did not receive its expected shipment. More disappointment. The final opportunity was at Wal-Mart. I’d read that many stores in the chain had only received five or so units. The clock was quickly approaching the top of the hour and I feared the units were already spoken for at this point.

Luckily, I was wrong. No lines. Quick service. In and out. I’m happy to say the wait was worth it. Apple’s second tablet computer is fantastic. The slimmer design and faster processor are more than worth the price to upgrade, in my opinion. Holding the tablet in your hand feels much more natural. It’s easy to relax in a chair while holding the device in one hand and reading an ebook. Both cameras turned out to be quite a disappointment. The rear camera only shoots still photos in a resolution under one mega pixel. That pretty much renders capturing pictures with the iPad useless. The cameras do work well shoot-

ing video. The rear camera will shoot in HD at a 720p resolution. The iMovie application allows for instant video editing straight from the iPad. Now you can shoot a family video and post it to Facebook in record time. One of the real marvels is Apple’s Smart Cover. It acts as a screen protector that can be manipulated to serve as a stand. The cover has magnets that keep it attached to the device. Closing the cover will put the iPad to sleep and opening will wake it back up. So cool. I’ll have an in-depth comparison between the four major tablets in the near future. I can already tell that the iPad 2 is the cream of the crop, and should not be missed by lovers of tablet computers.

Netf lix vying for rights to new series Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO — Netflix Inc. is trying to buy the Internet streaming rights to a 26-episode drama starring Kevin Spacey before the series is shown on a television network. If the deal is completed, it would mark a bold step in a new direction for Netflix’s popular video subscription service. Netflix currently boasts more than 20,000 titles in its streaming library, but most of them are previously aired TV series and older movies. The talks were reported earlier by Deadline.com. A person familiar with the negotiations on Wednesday confirmed Netflix’s

As it has grown, Netflix has become more nettlesome for long-established TV services because some households are reducing or canceling their cable TV subscriptions as they find more to stream over high-speed Internet connections. Without providing specifics, the person familiar with the “House of Cards” talks said Netflix is offering to pay less than $100 million for 26 episodes of the series. Netflix spent $406 million on Internet streaming rights last year, a more than six-fold increase from 2009.

‘Dragon Age II’ doesn’t feel like a sequel I have always had a soft spot in my heart for fantasy roll playing games. I remember playing Bioware’s landmark computer RPGs Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale (and all the sequels) all through high school. So of course I bought into all the hype of “Dragon Bobby Age: Origins” back Bozeman in 2009. And I got really excited when Pop Cultured the fine folks at Bioware labeled it as a spiritual successor of “Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn,” because that game is still in many ways the gold standard for RPGs. And “Origins” didn’t disappoint. The game wasn’t perfect, but there was a lot of room to grow in this world Bioware had created, and it seemed they built a pretty solid foundation for a system of combat and leveling. And we shouldn’t be surprised, because, after all, Bioware has come to represent a quality gaming company that is in touch with its target audience. But Dragon Age II isn’t a game

that anyone can call a “successor” to “BGII.” “DA2” isn’t a bad game, and in some ways I consider it a very good game — the story is fresh, the quest structure is much improved and the dialogue is what you come to expect from Bioware — but it feels like a game that has sold a bit of its birthright when it comes to game play. Back in the days of the Infinity engine, the engine that those Bioware RPGs ran on, you controlled a party of characters that were picked out, or created, for their talents and how they complimented each other. There was some serious strategy going on before you ever even saw battle, and then once in battle you had to adapt to every scenario and adjust by pausing the game and issuing orders. How you reacted to the different challenges was based on the ability of the characters you created and their strengths and weaknesses. Compare that to another popular game of the same time period: “Diablo.” Now “Diablo” and games like it aren’t bad games, but the combat system consists of click on the enemy until it dies and you move on. There is no character creation in the “Dia-

blo” series. You chose a premade character and you go clicking on bad guys until they die and until you beat the game. There’s a term for those type of games: hack ‘n slash. Now “DA:O” was much closer (like it was advertised to be) to the Infinity engine games. It required technique and battlefield savvy, you paused the game and set up your party formations. In Dragon Age II, you just mash the A button at all your enemies until they die with mixing in some skills. They call it streamlined, and it works pretty well and it’s fun enough, but it just doesn’t quite have the same challenge. Oh, and you don’t get to create a character in “DA2” like you did in “Origins.” Nope, you chose from a preselected list. I guess my problem comes from the fact that “DAII” doesn’t feel like a sequel, it feels like its own game that is just set in this world. It’s a good game, but I can’t help but feel like this game got rushed out a bit and is only a sequel here so that it will sell better. And “Dragon Age” deserves a good sequel that preserves it’s style of game play. And Dragon Age II, well, it just deserves to be its own game.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Here’s a question the members of the duo The Civil Wars have been contemplating a lot lately: What’s the value of a star’s tweet? Or two? Or three? For Joy Williams and John Paul White, tweets by Taylor Swift, Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum and Sara Bareilles, among many others, helped drive first-week sales of their debut album, Barton Hollow, to levels they didn’t expect. They sold out one tour and now have a more ambitious schedule down the road, had their video added by CMT, and now have at their fingertips limitless possibilities that good old-fashioned word of mouth brings in the Internet age. “Instantly, with one click, five million people knew our names,” White said of Swift’s tweet. Swift threw her support behind the duo when she told fans she was listening to “Poison & Wine”: “You can’t push ‘repeat’ on vinyl so I keep setting the needle back on my record player.” And that — combined with other unexpected national word-of-mouth opportunities — helped the band sell five times as many copies of Barton Hollow in its opening week in February than expected. The album debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 with about 25,000 copies sold. After five weeks it’s climbing steadily at 50,000. After catching a show in Nashville, Swift told fans she and a friend bought T-shirts “cause we’re superfanssss. They RULE live!” The Civil Wars are at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, this week looking for more buzz. They’ll perform at least 10 times at and around the conference, including a few highprofile events that will surely bring more clicks. Of course, word of mouth usually doesn’t happen when there’s no basis for it, and the duo has earned the kudos with an exciting debut that’s satisfying in a couple different ways. The musicianship and songcraft are simple, direct and evocative, simultaneously old-fashioned and new with a focus on mood. The music,

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Kenny Chesney isn’t happy with what he’s seeing on the video screen. He’s been watching it while singing a song during a rehearsal for his “Goin’ Coastal” tour and it just doesn’t snap. He gives instructions over the sound system to personnel at the back of the warehouse space where Chesney and his crew have been at it for several weeks. “I want the picture to change every time he hits the snare drum — BAP! BAP! BAP! BAP! BAP!” he says while air hammering an imaginary kit. A little later, his seven-piece band stumbles a bit and Chesney tells the group, “We’ve got to get that intro down.” He worries over what he’s going to say to the crowd at certain key moments, crafting and discarding drafts as he goes. “I’m glad you’re here. You can help me with this,” he tells a small group of record label executives and media. This is Chesney in lock-down mode. With just a few rehearsals left till his tour kicks off Thursday in West Palm Beach, Fla., Chesney was agonizing over every detail. “There’s a lot of mixed emotions for me right now because I’m for the first time seeing everything we’ve worked so hard on come together,” Chesney said. “And I’m very happy about that. But on the other hand it’s not all together yet so it’s the thing that keeps me up at night when I’m preparing to do this.” The attention to detail is what has made Kenny Chesney one of the most bankable acts in the touring business, regardless of genre. Since 1999, Pollstar figures show he has sold more than 8.8 million tickets and grossed more than $460 million. Only the Dave Matthews Band has sold more tickets over the last decade and only Matthews and Celine Dion have grossed more. Chesney took the year off the road in 2010 to concentrate on his lauded new album Hemingway’s Whiskey and to make three films — a 3-D concert movie and two documentaries about football. With his return to touring, he’s bringing along Uncle Kracker and Billy Currington to open his arena shows; the Zac Brown Band will join them on11 stadium dates throughout the summer. Currington’s beachy vibe is a lot like Chesney’s, but he’s never experienced anything like the “Goin’ Coastal” tour before. He’s trying to raise his game to keep up with country’s biggest draw. “We actually had to bring in a little more production than we’re used to,” Currington said. “It’s a new experience for me playing places that big and needing this much gear.”

which relies on White’s dynamic guitar and soaring dual harmonies, is almost impossible to classify. It’s been called country, folk, Americana, Southern Gothic and sliced and diced by bloggers and critics into a number of subcategories. “I don’t really know where we fit,” White said. “But I’m extremely happy about that.” Williams and White — both married, but to other people — didn’t set out to make the kind of music they do. Williams, a native Californian who lives in east Nashville, was attempting to make the step from gospel music to pop. And White, of Muscle Shoals, Ala., was a rocker whose record deal fell through. They might never have met if not for “Band X,” a country project both were asked to write for by their music publishers. Neither saw how they fit in the picture. “And we both tried to cancel,” White said. White and Williams agree there would have been no reason to put them together in a writing room on the first day of the songwriting sessions. It was random chance that

made no sense on the surface. But the results were immediate. “To be honest, the first day when I was with her, we weren’t too concerned about getting cuts on the project,” White said. “We were just like, ‘Who are you.’” “’Where have you been my entire musical life?’” Williams said. “But neither one of us said that out loud at any point,” White said. The two got together for another songwriting session and the chemistry was undeniable. Yet still neither broached the idea of teaming up in a permanent way. “I was a little jaded and so was she,” White said. “I thought, I’m just going to write songs for a while. We went into the studio and we clicked again, so I finally got up the nerve to ask her out as it were.” “In a musical way,” Williams said. “It was very awkward — ‘I don’t know what you’re doing later ...,’” White said. “And she totally could’ve just let me hang out there.” Instead, she chose a path neither of them really ever envisioned and it has led them to a kind of freedom they’ve never felt before.

But having painted Eddie into a desperate corner, director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) and screenwriter Leslie Dixon (adapting the novel The Dark Fields) resort to a last-act cheat . You needn’t be on NZT-48 to realize you’ve been had. Despite the presence of De Niro and Cornish, Limitless is pretty much a one-man show. Happily, Cooper is up to it. Limitless may not be a slam dunk, but this guy’s got it.

The flash of satin, sequins, spandex, and precision step dancing that is Michael Flatley “comes at you in stereo vision in Lord of the Dance 3D, an insistent spectacle blending Las Vegas razzmatazz with World Wrestling Entertainment showmanship. Opening on St. Patrick’s Day for a one-week run, the new film is a state-of-the-art version of the show first staged and performed by Flatley at Dublin’s Point Theatre in 1996 (the version recorded in a 1997 video). Tricked out with laser lights, Jumbotrons, and stereoscopic cameras, Lord was filmed at the same Dublin venue, rechristened the 02 theater, in 2010. The noticeable 3D enhancement I saw was the effect of glitter sprayflatley ing off the screen toward me. Rather than bring the viewer into the thick of the performance, director Marcus Viner uses the stereoscopic technology as a visual garnish. Lord is a faithful transcription of a live performance, but it lacks the you-are-there dimension of the most involving concert films. Flatley has owned the Guinness world record for most taps per second. He’s said to clock in at 35 per, which made him the fastest heel in East or West. Maybe it’s just the sequined boleros, but much of the time this man who has done so much to celebrate Irish folkloric traditions resembles a turbocharged toreador at a flamenco fiesta. A heroic saga expressed in movement, this Irish folk tale on steroids is about the struggle between the forces of light and darkness as led respectively by the Lord of the Dance and warlord Don Dorcha. They seem to be fighting over a jewel-encrusted title belt. While the Lord of the Dance is inspired by a spritelike spirit, Don Dorcha is reinforced by what looks to be a Druid army. Punctuating their mythic battles (dramatically emphasized with light-show theatrics) are merrier interludes such as those with fetching blond violinists in black spangly minidresses and dominatrix boots who resemble greeters at the Playboy Mansion. Throughout Flatley, now 52, is triumphal and indefatigable. There are two mysteries here: From whence comes Flatley’s boundless energy? And why does it make me feel so tapped out?

There’s so much natural drama in the real boxing story of half brothers Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund that all director David O. Russell had to do was cast the right people to have a solid hit. This isn’t just a boxing movie. It’s a very human story about how the quest for fame and fortune can be deeply damaging, as told by a group of remarkable players. Matthew McConaughey may be the only actor in Hollywood who can swagger while sitting down. He drawls and cracks out that toothy grin and it’s lock-upyour-daughters/hide granny’s mattress money time. You either fall for his charm or roll your eyes at his chutzpah. The Lincoln Lawyer gives this charming devil his due, a role that plays right into his wheelhouse — a slick, smarmy, hustling lawyer whose clientele is the rough trade; hookers, pot pushers and biker gangs. Mick Haller (McConaughey) cajoles, sweet-talks and overcharges many of those clients, doing business in and around LA out of the back of his late model Lincoln town car. But what game can Mick run when he is hired by Beverly Hills money to defend a very rich and seemingly quite dangerous young man (Ryan Phillippe)?

lated with a peerless supporting cast, actors who bring just the right history to their roles. There’s Tomei, sexy and weary of her ex’s flirty ways. But not that weary. John Leguizamo plays a shifty bail bondsman, Michael Pena scorches a couple of scenes as a

client Mick let down years before, a man now doing hard time. Shea Whigham steals scenes as a lowdown jailhouse snitch. And William H. Macy is the manic, wise-cracking investigator Mick calls on in a pinch. But McConaughey is the heart of this piece, a poker player trying hard not to show his hand when the other guy’s seemingly got all the cards. His offhand way with a line comes off to beautiful effect. “I don’t get paid, I don’t work,” he drawls to the bikers who want their favorite pot grower sprung from jail. They could seriously mess Mick up, and not even his bulky bodyguard/chauffeur (Laurence Mason) could save him. Mick just waits for the envelope, gives it a little shake. “Aren’t you gonna count it? “I jus’ did.” Director Brad Furman and writer John Romano haven’t made a cunning movie. It lets you get ahead of its twists and turns from time to time. But they’ve done their part in building the perfect vehicle for a star whose career is built on playing lawyers and other hustlers. And McConaughey, with his best role since We Are Marshall, keeps this Lincoln running cool and smooth from start to finish.

Paul is basically just one extended chase scene, with assorted oddballs periodically introduced to enliven the proceedings. (Kristen Wiig is Graeme’s love interest; Blythe Danner is the grown-up woman who first encountered Paul as a child; Bill Hader and Joe Lo Truglio play the bumbling cops assisting Bateman’s character.) And whereas the best bits in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were elaborately worked out, visually surprising action set pieces, Paul too frequently resorts to jokes about alien penis size; jokes about straight guys who worry that people might think they are gay; jokes that rely upon the humiliation of strong-willed women (Sigourney Weaver, who turns up as Bateman’s badass boss) for yuks. Perhaps the 12year-olds in the crowd will get a kick out of watching an alien blurt out the f-word or smoke weed. For the rest of us, though, Paul quickly grows tiresome.

AUSTIN, Texas — Jodie Foster premiered the quirky but dark movie The Beaver at the South by Southwest Film Festival on Wednesday night, saying she’s grateful for the performance by troubled actor and friend Mel Gibson. The film follows a depressed toy company executive who picks up a hand puppet beaver and uses it to separate himself from the negative aspects of his personality that are destroying his family and career. Foster directed the movie and plays Gibson’s wife. “I can’t imagine anybody else doing it. He has such a deep, struggling soul that really understood the part of the movie that’s about a man in a spiritual crisis,” Foster said on the red carpet before the screening. Gibson, who recently was sentenced to 36 months of probation and ordered to attend 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of spousal battery on former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, did not attend the premiere. The battery charge was another blow to Gibson’s reputation, which took a major hit after his 2006 arrest for drunken driving. A deputy’s report leaked to the celebrity website TMZ revealed the action star had used anti-Semitic and sexist slurs. Foster, who has remained a steadfast friend of Gibson, acknowledged the battery charge made release of the film tricky. “There were all sorts of things that were beyond our control,” she told the audience after the movie, “It’s been difficult. In the last six months there hasn’t been any real audience (for the film). I think we all made the wise decision we should keep the film in some ways private and under wraps until we were ready to release.” Foster said she has no regrets about having Gibson in the movie. “I feel incredibly grateful to have Mel’s performance in this movie and I wouldn’t change anything. For anybody who’s ever worked with Mel Gibson, he’s the most beloved actor probably in the film business, at least of the ones I’ve worked with,” Foster said. “Obviously all sorts of stuff happened after the film finished that threw our release into a crazy pattern, but I certainly have no regrets about him being in the film or his performance.” The Beaver is only the second major film that Gibson has starred in since 2002. It is scheduled to open in select theaters May 6. Joining Foster at the premiere were actor Anton Yelchin, who plays Foster’s son, and writer Kyle Killen.

Samantha Presson just wants to take it all in; to close her eyes and imagine the music that has filled the great hall. “In my soul,” says the 14-year-old, “I know that I’ll be able to feel it — Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert — the great composers, voices and musicians, echoing off the rafters. It’s going to be overwhelming.” Presson, an eighth-grader, will be among the 53 members of Oxford High School’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble to perform as part of the Second Annual Percy Grainger Wind Festival at the famed Orchestra Hall in Chicago on March 26. “These are the upper-echelon students,” says ensemble director Chris Pennington. “They have to audition to get on the ensemble, which is the flagship band program at Oxford High School.” But before the ensemble takes the stage in Chicago, it will perform a free concert Monday, March 21, at the Leon Cole Auditorium on the campus of Jacksonville State University, featuring selections to be played during the Grainger festival. “It’s a chance to gain some confidence, to know that the world won’t come to an end if everything isn’t absolutely perfect,” says Pennington. “And it’s a chance for anyone in the county to see us because once we perform in Chicago, that’s it. We won’t perform again until next season.” For Connor Williams, a senior and five-year member of the ensemble, it’s a chance to show off a bit to a hometown crowd. “This is our chance,” he says, “to prove to people and show them exactly why we were chosen to go to Chicago.” Oxford is one of only four wind ensembles in the nation to have been invited to perform in what is intended to be a celebration of the work of Percy Grainger, considered one of the most important composers of wind band literature. “I’m excited. I’m pumped. I’m ready to get to Chicago,” says Presson, who plays the euphonium in the ensemble. “This is something that only a handful of ensembles around the world get to do. It’s going to be a great, great concert — something none of us will ever forget.” The Oxford Ensemble was chosen to perform based on the recommendation of adjudicators on the state level, where they received scores of “Superior with Distinction.” It was April of last year when Pennington first received word that the ensemble had been chosen to perform. During the festival, each band will conduct 25 minutes of stand-alone performances of Percy Grainger arrangements during an afternoon matinee at Orchestra Hall. Participating ensembles will also take part in a clinic conducted by Col. Arnald D. Gagriel, a noted Grainger band expert. In being authentic to the Grainger arrangements, the ensemble will incorporate various “color” instruments into the performance including soprano sax, oboe and flugelhorns. And their were some instruments the ensemble couldn’t get simply because they aren’t made any more, Pennington says. “The music we’re playing, for the most part, reflects the original instrumentation,” he says. “We’re playing some of the higher level arrangements as they were originally written.” And that will be quite a treat for the audience, says Williams, who describes Grainger’s music as “crazy.” “We’re literally jumping from one tempo, one style, to another,” he says. “One piece will be all jumpy and full of life and next is sad, sweet and slow as it can be.
