Malouf returns, stays on form with ‘Ransom’ Ransom by David Malouf; Pantheon, 2009; 224 pages; $24 Reviewed by Steven Whitton David Malouf is surely Australia’s greatest living writer. It’s been over a decade since The Conversations at Curlew Creek, his last novel, stunned the reader at every turn in its attempts to understand the barren Australian landscape. The characters of that novel are subtly channeled in Ransom, a shorter and equally humane novel that traverses a decidedly different landscape. Ransom is about the Trojan War. Malouf takes a section of Homer — just a few lines really — and finds new vitality in the dishonor Achilles perpetrates against the body of the dead Hector, retribution for Hector’s killing Patroclus, Achilles’ friend. That violence results in a journey made by Priam, king of Troy, to ransom the body of his son. The magic of Malouf’s new book, however, comes in its avoidance of the gran-

diose. The novel links three men, Achilles, Priam and Somax, the driver of the cart containing the ransom. Within that simple, fragile framework, the novel contemplates youth and old age, loyalty and dishonor, and, most movingly, fathers and sons. Malouf’s Achilles is a brute. He was, in his youth, a “wild child” with a close connection with nature, a connection that sustained him initially. Now he is a man of war: a man who is capable of the most horrendous forms of vengeance and a man who hasn’t seen his own son in almost a decade. Priam is Achilles’ opposite, a king who learns not to be a king only, but a man,

a father. On his journey to deliver the ransom, Priam discovers how to warm his memory with moments as simple as allowing a stream to ripple around his feet or tasting little griddlecakes made with affection for Somax by the wife of his deceased son. Somax, in his unaffected way, teaches his ruler “to be a man.” In the novel’s most satisfying moments, Somax quite tenderly watches Priam become “a man remade” as they pass some time together before delivering the ransom in a cart drawn by two mules, one called Shock, the other called Beauty. Ransom is a new concept for Greek and Trojan. Ransom is delivered by a man, a father — not by a king, but by “the hero of the deed that till now was never attempted.” Priam finally understands what David Malouf already knows: Life is “one day then the next; no more than that can be counted on.” Steven Whitton is Professor of English at Jacksonville State University.

Success, loss told in inspirational ‘Swimming’ SWIMMING by Nicola Keegan; Knopf, 2009; 305 pages; $25.95 Reviewed by Britny Williams Some people are born with natural talents and abilities. We hear about young children excelling in calculus, dance and piano. Olympic athletes often have been practicing and competing in their respective sports from a very young age. Nicola Keegan’s novel, Swimming, is such a tale — it’s the story of a Kansas-born Catholic girl who learned to swim at the ripe age of nine months. Philomena Ash is the second oldest of four girls, and lives a relatively normal life filled with family, friends, school and, of course, her swim team, the Dolphins. Things turn sour in Mena’s world upon the discovery that her older sister, Bronwyn, has Hodgkin’s disease. This takes a toll on the family, and it only gets worse when Bron dies. Soon after the death of her

sister, Mena’s father dies in a plane crash that may or may not have been accidental. Mrs. Ash becomes a total recluse, and one of Mena’s younger sisters becomes a drug addict. The only thing keeping Mena sane is swimming. She pushes herself harder and is constantly setting and breaking state records. When Mena is 16 years old, she is whisked out of Kansas and away from her deteriorating family by Olympic coach Ernest Mankovitz (called Supercoach E. Mankovitz by his team). The next four months are spent in Colorado, where Mena gains not only a new nickname that sticks with her for the rest of her swimming career, but she the training needed to take her to the 1984 Olympics. Mena breezes through college under the guise of an English major. She trains harder

than ever while trying to ignore the constant struggles of her shut-in mother and now-missing younger sister. Swimming is all she has, and she swims through the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. Life finally catches up when Mena tears muscles in her shoulder, ruining her ability to compete. She realizes that she never cared about any of the men in her life, she is incapable of normal human interaction and the ever-presence of her long-dead father and older sister might be a sign of mental instability. Mena hates the very idea of retirement, but is finally left without a choice. After a life of swimming and 12 Olympic gold medals, Philomena finds herself in a shabby apartment in France, where she spends her days getting lost, scribbling on her apartment walls and visiting a psychiatrist.

Nicola Keegan tells Philomena’s story in a stream-of-consciousness way that is hard to follow at times. You often have no idea what year it is, or how old Mena is, during certain chapters. Keegan also presents the dialogue in a unique way that uses italics rather than quotations that might take some getting used to. Despite the sometimesconfusing layout, Swimming is both highly inspirational and thought provoking. Nicola Keegan throws her readers directly into the mind of an athlete who goes through trauma after trauma, from losing family to losing her career, finally to losing her mind. “I do not know that my mind is an ocean, collecting things that sift down through the sunlight … settling into the deep trenches nature dug below. All I know is that when I kick, it moves me. So I kick again.” Britny Williams is an avid reader and a student at Jacksonville State University.

As they try to escape the island, sleep escaping me In the first two years after your death, you catch up on all the sleep you missed during your life. I can’t remember who shared that nugget of wisdom, but it’s a theory that I live my life by. It’s one that I’ve really lived my life by lately. Bran My personal Strickland Lost marathon has enveloped my life to Sports Editor an unhealthy level, but hopefully not one approaching the aforementioned death. So far it’s been 3,093 minutes of my life. Thank goodness that’s been commercial-free. Translated into more digestible numbers, it’s a little more than 51 hours, which is just about the amount of time it takes you to get through the line at Wal-Mart on a Friday afternoon. It’s been as frustrating as anything I can remember. But it’s as addicting, as I’ve said before, as anything I can imagine. But thank goodness I’m not alone. Obviously I’m not alone in watching it, but in writing about it either. Good friend Will Heath, writer and creator of www.firewillheath.com, is a Lost guru. When he’s not doing his due diligence as the editor of the St. Clair Times, he brings his thoughts on Lost to the world. Like myself, Heath jumped onto the bandwagon after the show’s premiere, catching up on ABC.com sometime after the second season. Initially watching a few episodes “just to see if I liked it,” he said it snowballed. “In the case of this particular show, the writers and the producers put a lot of thought into everything,” Heath said, “whether it seems realistic or not.” At the pace of a competitive eater, I’ve gorged, taking in the first three seasons at a blur. And already, I’m taken aback. The flashbacks, annoying as they might be, are helpful, but I was surprised to learn that we would also be introduced to flashforwards. That’s completely thrown me off, because I assumed from the beginning that the

... and now i’m found Sports editor Bran Strickland is on a crusade to catch up with Lost before the final-season premiere on Feb. 2. Follow his progress — but don’t give spoilers — on Twitter, @Bran_Strickland. final episode would be some cheesy rescue. Or they all died. Which is what I’ve come to expect in the first three seasons: constant curveballs. Some of which downright tick me off. OK, so if there are 40-something people on this island, why just throw two into the plot nearly halfway through the show? Let’s just call them the Diamond Duo. That was just plain stupid. As are the Numbers. Sure, as Heath says, everything means something, but I can’t help but think it won’t make that big of a difference to the overall show. Without giving away too much to ruin things for me, Heath pontificates on “something nuclear” to the Numbers’ meaning. At this point, I don’t know what to think. The show seems to follow most any Hollywood premise. You’ve got your leading man, Jack. His constant love interests: Kate, Ana Lucia and Juliet. The guy everybody loves: Hurley. The guy everybody loves to hate: Sawyer. The idiot who gets on your nerves: Charlie. The villain: Ben. And the one guy you can’t quite figure out: Locke. And the whole figuring-out part of this show, to me, is what has made it popular. At least at this point, nothing has really blown me away. Sure, I watch it. Sure, I crave it, but it’s only because of my truly human nature of wanting to know what this means, or what’s going to happen next. It’s not because it’s brilliantly written. It’s more than brain candy, but less than a classic. P.S. — Going back to my original comparison to Gilligan’s Island … in the epic Mary Ann or Ginger debate, I’ve got Claire.

Conan O’Brien reached a $45 million deal to exit NBC and ‘The Tonight Show,’ allowing Jay Leno to return to the late-night program he hosted for 17 years.

NBC: O’Brien reaches $45M exit deal By FRAZIER MOORE Associated Press

NEW YORK — Conan O’Brien told NBC good riddance Thursday in a $45 million deal for his exit from The Tonight Show, allowing Jay Leno to return to the late-night program he hosted for 17 years. Under the deal, which came seven months after O’Brien took the reins from Leno, O’Brien will get more than $33 million, NBC said. The rest will go to his 200-strong staff in severance. Compensation for O’Brien’s staff and crew was the final hurdle in negotiations. O’Brien was said to have been “dug in” on the issue out of concern for the workers, while NBC said this week that it had already agreed to pay “millions of dollars to compensate every one of them” and deemed it a public relations “ploy.” On Wednesday night’s show, speaking of a push to get a severance deal for his staff, O’Brien joked, “At first they thought I was gullible. They said the staff would be taken to a big farm, where they’d be allowed to run free forever.” O’Brien’s final show will be Friday, with Tom Hanks scheduled to appear as well as Will Ferrell — his first guest as Tonight host last June. Leno will return to Tonight on March 1. “In the end, Conan was appreciative of the steps NBC made to take care of his staff and crew, and decided to supplement the severance they were getting out of his own pocket,” his manager, Gavin Polone, told The

Wall Street Journal. “Now he just wants to get back on the air as quickly as possible.” O’Brien will be free to begin another TV job as soon as September, NBC said. There has been much speculation on where he might go next. ABC (which airs Nightline and Jimmy Kimmel Live!) has said it wasn’t interested, while Fox, which lacks a network latenight show, expressed appreciation for his show — but nothing more. Comedy Central has also been mentioned. A spokesman for O’Brien said he would be unavailable for comment. O’Brien landed the Tonight show after successfully hosting Late Night, which airs an hour later, since 1993. But he quickly stumbled in the ratings race against his CBS rival, David Letterman. Under Leno, the Tonight show was the ratings champ at 10:35 p.m., but he proved an instant flop with his experiment in prime time. Last week NBC announced that the fivehour vacancy in prime time left by Leno will be filled by scripted and reality fare calculated to bring NBC affiliates a more robust lead-in audience for their local news than Leno had been delivering. A provisional slate of shows will include new and veteran NBC dramas, a comedy panel series produced by Jerry Seinfeld and Dateline NBC. It had been no secret that the 46-year-old O’Brien was scoring puny ratings numbers on Tonight, averaging 2.5 million nightly viewers, compared with 4.2 million for Letterman’s Late Show, according to Nielsen figures.

Grammys will stage 3-D tribute to Michael Jackson Associated Press

Matt Sayles/Associated Press

Fans watch the band Youth Group perform at the 2006 Coachella Valley Music Festival in Indio, Calif., April 30, 2006.

Jay-Z, Muse, Thom Yorke lead Coachella By Geoff Boucher and Todd Martens Los Angeles Times

LOS ANGELES — The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival will bring a youth movement to the low desert this year. After several years of greybeard headliners, California’s signature festival is going back to the future with younger acts including Gorillaz, Muse, Jay-Z, Thom Yorke, MGMT, Hot Chip, Spoon, Vampire Weekend and LCD Soundsystem at the very top of the bill for the threeday concert that begins April 16 at the Empire Polo Field in Indio. There are some flashback acts, including Woodstock icon Sly Stone and the Family Stone, 1980s alt-rock outfit Echo and the Bunnymen and reconstituted college-rock outfit Pavement, but they’re not leading the bill like Paul McCartney, Prince and Roger Waters were in past years. The presence of rap superstar Jay-Z will raise the eyebrows of those fans who like to think of Coachella as an indie-music oasis on today’s live-music landscape; hip-hop stars such as Kanye West, the Beastie Boys, Lupe Fiasco and Kool Keith have performed at Coachella in the past but none of them tap into the same street imagery and conspicu-

ous consumption ethos that defines the $150-million mogul. Jay-Z is also a somewhat unexpected booking because he has a performance — for which tickets are still available — at the Staples Center on March 26. The hip-hop star will close out the opening night of the fest on Friday, when other performers will be LCD Soundsystem, rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Specials and John Lydon’s post-Sex Pistols experimental outfit Public Image Ltd. Saturday night will be headlined by Muse, Faith No More, DJs Tiesto and David Guetta, MGMT, Hot Chip and Jack White’s The Dead Weather. Sunday will close with Gorillaz, Yorke, Spoon, Parisian electronic rockers Phoenix and dance veterans Orbital. The desert event has won a reputation among fans for showcasing artists on the comeback trail, and rock acts such as the Pixies and Iggy & the Stooges made splashy returns at Coachella. Pavement, a staple of the ’90s alt-rock scene, has been an expected Coachella headliner since announcing its reunion at the end of 2009. Gary Bongiovanni, the editor in chief of Pollstar, the concert-

industry trade publication, believes Coachella doesn’t need a boomerfriendly headliner such as McCartney, who performed last year, or Waters, who closed the event in 2008. A package built around Pavement, Public Image Ltd. and hipper acts, he believes, might even hold greater appeal for Coachella’s target young audience. The big question heading into last year’s Coachella was whether the economy would take its toll on the festival, and the answer was a resounding no. Paid attendance topped 150,000, said Bongiovanni, and promoter Goldenvoice/AEG put overall attendance at more than 160,000. Additionally, the festival’s gross reached $15.3 million, according to concert tracker Billboard Boxscore. Those numbers topped such wellknown destination events as Lollapalooza in Chicago and the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Coachella also made some recession-friendly concessions, offering fans the opportunity to purchase tickets on layaway, which it is again doing this year. Three-day packages are $269, not including Ticketmaster surcharges.

NEW YORK — Last year, as the Grammys were approaching, the show’s executive producer was in frequent talks with Michael Jackson to appear on the telecast to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Thriller.” Ken Ehrlich, the Grammy telecast’s co-executive producer, had presented several ideas for performers, including Justin Timberlake and Usher, all of which excited Jackson. But in the end, he declined the show’s invitation. “He just wasn’t ready for it,” Ehrlich said. This year, Jackson will be a focal point of the show, with an unprecedented posthumous tribute. The Grammys will broadcast a 3-D clip the singer made for his hit “Earth Song,” a video that was to be integral to his comeback concerts in London in July 2009 — shows that never happened because of his June 25 death in Los Angeles. Usher, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson will perform alongside the clip, which Ehrlich says will be the first time an awards show will feature 3-D. “Whenever we would do a show with (Jackson), the first thing he would say to me was, `How can we do something that we (have) never done before?’ And now we’re doing something that hasn’t been done before,” said Ehrlich, who worked with Jackson for almost 30 years, in an interview Tuesday. Ehrlich produced the televised memorial to Jackson last year. He was with the singer the night before he died — and that’s when he first saw the 3-D clip of “Earth Song,” a call to action about the destruction of nature and animals by man. “There are these incredible images of the beauties of nature, and then they are seen through the eyes of a little girl, and that girl falls asleep and when she wakes up, she is witness to the destruction of nature,” said Ehrlich. “It’s all about questioning what our values are.” While a part of the clip was shown in the recent movie documentary This Is It, Ehrlich says the Grammys will show the full piece in 3-D. When he saw it with Jackson that night, Ehrlich said the singer was moved to tears. Ehrlich decided to use the five-minute 3-D clip at the Grammys to produce a show-stopper worthy of Jackson, who provided the awards show with some of its most memorable moments, including his then-historic eight Grammy wins in 1984. “The promise is this is going to be pretty spectacular,” he said. Viewers can get free 3-D “Grammy” glasses from Target stores nationwide from Jan. 24 through Jan. 31, when the 52nd annual Grammy Awards will air live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on CBS (7 p.m.). Ehrlich says TV viewers can see the clip without the glasses, but won’t see the 3-D effect.

‘Transference’ another winner for Spoon Spoon Transference After releasing four consistently exceptional albums in The Aughts — Girls Can Tell, Kill the Moonlight, Gimme Fiction and the mainstream breakthrough Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga — Spoon has another winner in Transference (Merge). Though there isn’t an uplifting breakout hit like Ga’s “The Underdog” this time out, Transference is a far more potent work as a whole. As the first self-produced Spoon album, it reflects a more insular take on today’s darker emotional times, with taut bass lines and jagged shards of guitar soothed by the repetition of the sound of Britt Daniel’s voice — though not necessarily his sometimes disturbing lyrics — and in Jim Eno’s drumming. “Who Makes Your Money” comes across as the mix of trip-hop and rock that U2 was looking for on “No Line on the Horizon.” The first single, “Written in Reverse,” is a brash push-pull of angst and comfort, bouncing between piano

jumble and classic rock guitar riffs. The closest Spoon gets to letting loose is the groovedominated “The Mystery Zone.” But that’s OK; Spoon handles tension very well, especially when it winds up masterfully on the stylish “Out Go the Lights,” before unspooling into a moody outro that outJoy Divisions the band Interpol. Spoon chooses the stark and austere, turning inward and letting musical layers dissolve where most artists would have opted for a flashier turn. Yet, it’s the simplicity of the melodies and rhythms on Transference that makes it all the more memorable. — By Glenn Gamboa, Newsday

‘Crazy Heart’ soundtrack showcases classic country Various Artists Crazy Heart: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack In the film Crazy Heart, actor Jeff Bridges plays a hard-drinking country singer struggling to maintain a career long after he’s stopped having hits. The soundtrack leans on the bluer side of country music, ignoring modern country’s slick surfaces for a compilation of classic country, acoustic blues, and hard-bitten singer-songwriter fare. Musical director T Bone Burnett cherry-picks hits by the Delmore Brothers, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Louvin Brothers, Buck Owens and Kitty Wells to ground the soundtrack in time-tested standards. He balances it with more recent tunes by Americana singer-songwriters (Ryan Bingham, Billy Joe Shaver, Townes Van Zandt, Lucinda Williams) and a blues legend (Lightnin’ Hopkins). Then he works in original songs from the film, most of them co-written by Burnett and the late Stephen Bruton and sung

by Bridges or co-stars Robert Duvall and Colin Farrell. The actors don’t have the distinct vocal character of the established singers, but Burnett gives their songs an earthy resonance befitting the film’s honky-tonk ambiance. Crazy Heart makes a convincing argument that there are certain country music traditions that remain timeless. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Crazy Heart likely will raise the profile of Ryan Bingham, a whiskey-voiced Americana singer from New Mexico, who appears in the film and whose song “I Don’t Know” is a highlight of the soundtrack. — By Michael McCall, Associated Press

‘End Times’ have Eels’ Everett bummed Eels End Times Everywhere Mark Oliver Everett looks, he sees something he doesn’t like. Whether it’s the relationship dissolution that’s at the heart of his latest album, End Times, or the scary state of affairs in our world that he layers atop his personal pain, there’s little for Everett — known as Eels or E — to be happy about. While the emotions here are mostly difficult, E leavens the hurt with shifting textures and tempos and his trademark humor. “A Line in the Dirt” kicks off with one of the funniest opening lines in memory — which sadly can’t be reprinted here. The melancholy “In My Younger Days” is a meditation on midlife crises and he retells the breakup against type in the upbeat rocker “Gone Man.” He backs a loner’s declaration and an apocalyptic vision — “The city’s on fire you can smell the flesh, and the screams like dogs in the wilderness ... “ — with an airy guitar strum on “The Mansions

of Los Feliz” and strangely compares his ex to a “scary little suicide bomber” in “Paradise Blues.” This is Everett’s second album in six months, a rapid-fire output for an artist who had a four-year break between releases before “Hombre Lobo” came out over the summer. The albums cover similar thematic ground, but that’s OK. We’re just glad he’s back. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Everett is at his best when he uses humor to paint a sad picture and “A Line in the Dirt” is Everett at his most clever. Backed by doleful horns and a lonely piano line, he shows us the moment where things went around the corner, and it hurts. — Chris Talbott, Associated Press

Snoop Dogg’s latest album a return to decent music Snoop Dogg Malice N Wonderland Snoop Dogg — slippery-tongued rapper, host of Snoop Bowl VIII — has a pattern in his recording history. Going back to 1993’s four-star Doggystyle, one album is great, the next merely good-to-OK. All feature his laconic drawl and syrupy flow. As for his recent output, 2006’s The Blue Carpet Treatment was decent and 2008’s Ego Trippin’ was solidly experimental and delicious. Following this pattern, Malice is back to decent. There are lame tracks recorded with rappers Kokane and Soulja Boy Tell ’Em. The crunk “1800” — produced by/ costarring Lil Jon — is particularly dated. There are some clunker wordplays like “I’m gettin’ Richard like Pryor.” But other collaborations in Wonderland are sultry, with subtly dramatic

rhythm schematics, such as “Gangsta Luv,” produced by and featuring R&B smoothie The-Dream. And R. Kelly, Pharrell and Philly crooner Jazmine Sullivan enhance their Dogg duets. Malice is best, however, when Dogg raps alone and sinks into the belly of the beats, as in the sparsely arranged “Upside Down.” When, in “2 Minute Warning,” Snoop drops, “Ponytail still swingin’ / hair still braided / Laker to a Clipper / I won’t be faded,” all you can think is how right he is. — A.D. Indelible endings becoming trademark of Anderson f ilms By JAKE COYLE

‘Avatar’ pulled from Chinese screens; nears record By Russ Britt

Associated Press

NEW YORK — As the credits of Fantastic Mr. Fox began to roll and the Bobby Fuller Four’s “Let Her Dance” blared through the theater at a recent showing of the movie, a young girl leapt to her feet and joined the on-screen characters, dancing in the aisle. Much has already been said about Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animated film, a likely Oscar nominee and potential competitor to Pixar’s Up in the best animated film category. But it’s also the latest Anderson film to leave moviegoers — young and old, alike — with a memorable, final flourish. The endings of his films — from Bottle Rocket to The Royal Tenenbaums — constitute some of the most indelible final reels in recent moviemaking. Collectively, they almost uniformly conclude in a poetic moment of togetherness, perseverance and, often, a wink of mischief. Anderson’s endings — where emotion soars and music plays — get at a particular joy of moviegoing: exiting the theater with a warm feeling and dancing in the aisles like a toddler — or at least tapping your foot. “Anybody who knows my movies, they could probably spot one of my endings,” Anderson chuckled in a recent interview at the National Board of Review Awards, where he was honored for achievement. (Those wary of spoilers to these films, including Mr. Fox, may want to stop here.) In a Wes Anderson ending, characters come together — to dance to the Faces’ “Ooh La La” at the end of Rushmore, or get back on the train at the finish of The Darjeeling Limited. There’s a sense of undaunted spirit, like in Dignan’s (Owen Wilson) wink in his slow-motion walk into prison at the end of Bottle Rocket, Anderson’s first film. Or in The Royal Tenenbaums, when Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) remains undimmed even in death — his gravestone amusingly etched in a blatant lie that he died trying to res-

The character Mr. Fox is shown in a scene from ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox.’ cue his family. After a film dotted by David Bowie covers, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou concludes with the real thing. Bowie’s “Queen Bitch” rings out as Zissou (Bill Murray) elegantly (again in slow-motion) descends a staircase with a boy on his shoulders. In a homage to the cult film Buckaroo Banzai, Zissou’s team assembles around him as he marches down a pier. In adapting Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, Anderson (who co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach), added bookends to Dahl’s story. The plot essentially remains the same: The daring Mr. Fox (George Clooney) leads his family and friends into trouble when he picks a fight with neighboring farmers. After a long battle both with the farmers and within his fractured, idiosyncratic family, Mr. Fox — though scarred — triumphs. His family is still stuck underground, but Mr. Fox discovers how they’ll survive. The film ends with the group dancing in the aisles of a grocery store, owned by the same farmers bent on the animals’ destruction. The ending came from Dahl’s original manuscripts, not the published version. “It was only when we had the song did I get, `Here’s what the mood is, here’s what we’re going to walk out of the theater with,”’ says the 40year-old director. “The scene exists

because of the song.” The tune, “Let Her Dance,” is a forgotten classic by Fuller, and Anderson says the song had been “on our list” since his frequent music supervisor, Randall Poster, played it for him about 10 years ago. The song’s sock-hop exuberance — tinged with sacrifice — matches the Fox family’s celebration perfectly. “For me, that’s the whole reason for getting into it in the first place,” says Anderson. “The feeling when you’re walking out of the theater and the whole thing has hit you — and usually there is something musical happening at that moment — and you’re taking it all in.” Anderson’s endings are almost like distillations of his entire work. Again and again, he meticulously creates characters of wit, audacity and melancholy. They teeter on the edge of keeping it together, but in the end they always do: They preserve the family, they get back on the train. The consistency isn’t intentional, Anderson says. Rather, the hundreds of decisions involved in making a movie “has a tendency of digging into your unconscious in ways that you’re not entirely in charge of.” “At the end of it, you step back and you feel like, `Well, I’ve shown my hand again,”’ says Anderson, smiling. “At that point, I’m sort of standing with the characters, looking out at the camera a bit — seeing it from that point of view.”

LOS ANGELES — Fresh from a victory at the Golden Globes and another record-setting weekend at the box office, James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar met with some resistance from the Chinese government, it was reported Tuesday. The film, which is nearing the all-time worldwide box-office record, is being pulled from 1,628 screens across China, according to various news accounts. Reasons for the movie’s withdrawal vary, as some sources say the film is nearing the end of a normal run on Chinese screens while others point out its themes are of a sensitive nature to Beijing. The central plot point of Avatar features a futuristic military operation from a deteriorating Earth sent to a distant planet to uproot a native people in order to mine a precious metal. There are fears that the film draws parallels to Chinese who have been displaced due to property development, the U.K.’s Guardian Web site reported. The Guardian said that Avatar was due to run through the Chinese New Year and on to Feb. 28, but now 2-D versions of the film will be pulled Jan. 23. The film will continue to show in 3-D versions, however. Other reports say the film is being pulled because it is taking away too much business from homegrown pictures. On many of the screens where it has played, Avatar will be replaced with a patriotic biography of the Chinese philosopher Confucius starring Chow Yun-fat. Officials from Twentieth-Century Fox, the film’s distributors, were not immediately available for comment. The studio is a property of News Corp., as is MarketWatch, the publisher of this report. Avatar has been the most successful film in China ever, generating more than $80 million in box-office receipts during its two weeks there, Variety.com reported. But its removal isn’t expected to make too much of a dent as it lumbers toward the global record — set by Cameron’s last directorial effort, the 1997 film Titanic. Avatar has made more than $1.62 billion in worldwide receipts, according to the most recent estimates. The record set by Titanic, actually reached 12 years ago, is $1.84 billion. Over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, Avatar set a box-office record, raking in $54.6 million domestically — the best showing of any film in that time frame, including any films that debuted during the King holiday weekend in years past. Avatar has been in theaters for five weeks and been at the top of the box office since its Dec. 18 debut. It also is the third film ever to cross the $500 million threshold in North American receipts, behind Titanic and last year’s The Dark Knight, and now stands at $505 million.

Disney touch is missing from ‘Tooth Fairy’ tooth fairy H1/2 Rating: PG for mild language Running time: 1:41 STARRING: Dwayne Johnson, Julie Andrews, Ashley Judd

The Orlando Sentinel Dwayne Johnson tries to cash in on his Game Planproven kid appeal and Fox strains to find a little Disneymagic in Tooth Fairy, a sugary blend of Enchanted and Monsters, Inc. that will make you want to brush midway through it. Instead of The Game Plan’s arrogant football player who must learn sacrifice, humility and teamwork from a child, the former wrestler known as The Rock plays a cynical, washed-up minor league hockey player who has to learn a lesson about encouraging, not discouraging, children’s dreams and fantasies. Derek (Johnson) already has the nickname The Tooth Fairy thanks to his teamenforcer role and his brutish skills on the ice.

Derek is eventually sentenced to be a tooth fairy. There are many “fairy” gags, a few too many “Let’s get small” references and “wing envy” jokes. As “Fred Claus” ham-fisted as this is, the glint of what might have been a cute kids’ comedy still glimmers in random moments. But that Disney touch (which even Disney has trouble replicating) is missing. Even the hockey is unconvincing. So no dollar under the pillow for this cavity.

Murphy’s mom, husband say drugs didn’t kill her By ANTHONY McCARTNEY

Arts industry faces big slump after years of growth By BRETT ZONGKER

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — A month after her sudden death, Brittany Murphy’s mother and husband say they are convinced the actress died of natural causes, not drugs or an eating disorder. In an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Sharon Murphy and Simon Monjack said that Murphy did not use drugs or alcohol and that they are awaiting a determination from coroner’s officials that will end speculation prescription medicine caused Murphy’s death on Dec. 20 at age 32. Monjack said some of the prescription medications found in the couple’s Hollywood Hills home belonged to him. Murphy had mitral valve prolapse, a common condition where a heart valve does not properly close, but doctors said the actress “would live a long and healthy life,” Monjack said. “She had a fear of dying,” Sharon Murphy said. “She would not take too much caffeine. She wouldn’t even have a glass of champagne on New Year’s. She was just high on life, and people see that as something else I guess.” Murphy, the star of varied films such as “Clueless,” “8 Mile,” “Sin City” and the television series “King of the Hill,” was buried in a private funeral on Christmas Eve. At the service, Monjack told mourners that the actress was his best friend and soul mate, sentiments he repeated during the Tuesday interview. Monjack, who married Murphy in 2007, said police and coroner’s officials have not contacted the family to say his wife’s death was from anything other than natural causes. Authorities continue to investigate her death but do not suspect foul play. An autopsy was inconclusive and coroner’s officials are awaiting the results of toxicology and tissue tests before determining what killed the actress. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Tuesday that he had not seen Murphy’s autopsy report, but the condition of her heart would be looked at before her cause of death is determined. Sharon Murphy described the wait for answers as torture. “We wish we knew,” she said. “She was alive one minute and she was dead the next,” Monjack said. The pair worked frantically to save Murphy’s life the morning she died, as revealed in a heart-wrenching 911 call where Sharon Murphy implores, “Brittany, please come back!” as Monjack performs CPR. Sharon Murphy said she has largely ignored tabloid reports that have suggested her daughter abused drugs or had an eating disorder. She said her daughter had always been petite and ate often, but burned it off with an active lifestyle. Monjack, who has read some of the reports, called them lies based on anonymous sources who weren’t

He said he is considering suing some British outlets for “outright fabrications.” He said the rumors of her drug use were unfounded and had cost his wife roles in some major films. He said he is also considering whether to sue the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department over an initial report that was obtained by celebrity Web site TMZ.com, which listed several prescription medications found in Murphy’s home. Monjack said most of the medicines listed in the report were his. He said his wife took the anti-seizure medication klonopin ever since an episode she had while filming “8 Mile.” She also occasionally took Sarafem, a drug aimed at pain and mood swings during menstrual periods, Monjack said.

WASHINGTON — The number of U.S. arts organizations grew by thousands over the last decade, but many are now struggling with greater competition for audiences and charity dollars, according to a national study of the industry’s health. The first National Arts Index released Wednesday by the group Americans for the Arts shows the nation’s arts businesses fell into their biggest slump in more than a decade in 2008. It looks at 76 indicators, including music royalties, Broadway ticket sales, museum visits, philanthropy and the number of college art majors. The index registered an overall 4.2 percent decline for the arts sector from 2007 to 2008, though researchers say the problems began brewing much earlier. “The issues that arts organizations are facing right now aren’t simply a function of the economic downturn,” said Robert Lynch, president of the group. “You can really see the arts have been losing market share in areas of private philanthropy fairly steadily for a decade now.” Some groups have failed to prepare for the lean times or adapt to changing audiences as the nation grew more diverse, he said. Arthur C. Brooks, an economist and president of the conservative American Enterprise Institute who advised on the study, said corporate arts funding probably won’t rebound, and some arts groups need to go out of business. “People are voting with their feet, away from paying high ticket prices and more toward doing the arts,” said Brooks, who once played the French horn professionally. Still, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, visiting Washington for a U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting, said the arts remain critical to economic development. Mayors are calling for a White House summit on the arts, he said. The study is based on government and private sector data covering finances, employment numbers, educational statistics and consumer spending. The index comprises four years of research and will be updated each year in October. The study noted New York’s Metropolitan Opera was a model in building new audiences with its popular simulcasts in movie theaters. In Tennessee, the group ArtsMemphis created an iPhone application to provide instant access to the area’s cultural calendar. Americans for the Arts, which is celebrating its 50th year with the release of the study, noted there were just a few thousand nonprofit arts groups in the 1960s. Now there are more than 100,000. But other business models, such as arts incubators, shared facilities and partnerships with non-arts groups could guide the future.

Reginald Gray, teacher, also Reggie G, rapper

Haute Homemade A crafter’s favorite corner in Sunday’s Life section

By Mario Tarradell The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS — Reginald Gray won’t conform to stereotypes. Especially when he’s rapper Reggie G. As Reggie G, he’s got a conversational flow and a penchant for musical variety, from spaghetti Western themes to OutKast to Ozzy Osbourne. He bypasses the rap lifestyle trappings — no bling, no limos, no scantily clad women — and relishes everyday realities. He also has two degrees from Southern Methodist University, a bachelor’s in advertising and a master’s in economics. He’s working on his doctorate. “Reggie wasn’t born with a platinum spoon in his mouth,” says Corbin Corona, who produced a track Gray recorded with Chamillionaire. “He came and he worked and he went to SMU. The guy teaches night classes on microand macro-economics.” That’s five classes at Dallas’ Paul Quinn College and Navarro College’s Midlothian campus. It takes coaxing to get Gray to acknowledge that. Not because he’s ashamed of teaching, but because he doesn’t want to be viewed as “the rapper with the degrees.” He doesn’t want to appear as if he’s being made out to be “better than anybody else,” he says. Gray takes the teaching seriously, and it informs his rapping. “Well, sort of,” he says while sitting at Dallas’ Studio 1801, which is owned by Gray’s friend and business partner John Allen. “I’m not teaching economics classes in my raps. But what I am

I don’t feel like that. But what I do feel is I am doing something different with my life. The teaching gives me a chance to give back to the community. It’s sort of like a community service to me but I get a check for it.”

Rapping has been a hobby and a career dream for the 29-year-old Gray since 1997. When he was 18 in Grambling, La., he subscribed to what could be thought of as the typical rapper’s philosophy. “At that point in my life I was all about that,” he says. “I’d get high every day. I did that, all of that. But I wanted to get better. I’m trying to get better and I’m trying to live a long life. I want to be true to myself.”

This week’s adventure in overrated gaming

Paul Sakuma/Associated Press/File

Nintendo Wii sales were strong in 2009, but video game sales as a whole were down for the year.

Games survive recession, but at what cost? By Brian Crecente Kotaku.com (McClatchy)

Despite the recession and a drop in video game sales last year, December was the biggest month in the history of video games. A combination of console price cuts, a holiday rich in spending and the recent release of several chartbusting titles helped the game industry pull in $5.53 billion in December alone, according to the NPD Group. But December was one of only four months to see an increase in sales compared to 2008, leading to a drop in annual sales of eight percent in an industry once described as recessionproof. “Clearly, 2009 was tough year for consumers and the national economy. However, the bigger picture is one that underscores the industry’s strength; 2009 and 2008 were the highest-grossing years in our industry’s history,” said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of the Entertainment Software Association, the U.S. association representing computer and video game publishers. “That said, our industry’s structure is solid, and I anticipate a strong 2010 with a pipeline full of highly-anticipated titles.”

Much of 2009’s sales came from Nintendo, which had seven of the ten top selling console and portable games of the year and record breaking hardware sales. Nintendo’s DS sold more than 11.2 million in 2009, a U.S. calendar-year sales record, and the Wii finished the year with 9.6 million sold, with nearly one-fifth of Wii consoles sold since its 2006 launch happening in November and December of last year. “Wii, Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi combined to sell more than 7 million units in the month of December alone,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Clearly there is overwhelming consumer demand for fun games, motion controls and value. This remarkable hardware sales surge presents a tremendous software opportunity for Nintendo and its third-party partners as we head into 2010.” And Nintendo isn’t the only company excited about 2010. Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter writes in his monthly report on the video game industry that it is a “relief to finally put 2009 behind us” adding that 2010 is going to be a big year. This year starts out with a bang,

rolling out an unprecedented number of big titles. Many of these possible blockbusters were initially set to hit stores last holiday, but were pushed back into early this year, creating the potential for a second big run of game purchases. Among the standouts are Dark Void, Bayonetta, Mass Effect 2, Darksiders, MAG and Army of Two. February and March also have a share of big games hitting, leading many to speculate that 2010 could show not just a rebound of the game industry, but a surge in sales. Pachter calls the release schedule for the first half of this year “one of the strongest in history.” While it looks like the industry as a whole has weathered the economic storm, that doesn’t mean it was left unchanged. Diving down into the numbers shows that a bulk of the industry’s revenue was generated by a handful of the biggest publishers, companies like Electronic Arts, Activision and Nintendo. Smaller studios were absorbed or shut down. This consolidation of development power will likely have a lasting impact on video game innovation and creativity. Only time will tell whether it will be a positive one.

Those of you who follow this column know I don’t have much tolerance for tedious gameplay or games with flashy marketing. Assassin’s Creed II, the overrated followup to the overrated Assassin’s Creed, has both. I wish I could say I spent lots of time playing this game. I spent about an hour cursing at it, laughing at its haphazard plot and tossing it a bone for nice Dan costume design. Whisenhunt The game is set in the Pushing Buttons future where technology allows the protagonist to inhabit the body of the assassin Ezio during Renaissance-era Italy. The future envisioned in this game involves bad costumes, gratuitous cursing (and this is ME telling you the cursing is gratuitous) and just some really atrocious dialogue. The game gets mildly interesting when the player travels back to inhabit Ezio. Publisher Ubisoft obviously spent money on two things: marketing and costumes for the Italian characters. Perhaps the money could have been spent finding actors who could pull off credible Italian accents, game play that wasn’t frustrating, etc. Oh, and the first part of the game I played as a baby for five seconds. Yeah, that really cleared things up for me there. I also got a trophy for correctly turning on the PS3, I think. I spent an hour trying to win a foot race across building tops with Ezio and his ... brother, I guess? A little bit of a walkthrough would have helped. Ubisoft decided on a sink-or-swim approach, which left me cursing and punching random Italians in the street when I inevitably failed. And failed. And failed. I finally won the dang thing, and was it a major plot point? NO!!! It just kept me moving through more tedious tasks that I had no help completing. But the critics all loooove Assassin’s Creed. It says so on all the commercials. Well, I’m here to tell you, those critics don’t know what they’re talking about. This game was as overrated as its predecessor. If a game doesn’t take me anywhere within the first hour of gameplay and leaves me climbing up the wall instead, I don’t have much tolerance for it. Don’t fall for the flashiness of this series. Like any good assassin, the game will stealthily deprive you of $60. And that’s why I use Gamefly. Assassin’s Creed II gets two buttons out of five. OXFORD — With the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Knox Concert Series isn’t just bringing music and culture to Anniston. It’s also hoping to spark an interest in classical music with area youths. The organization educated around 200 students from Anniston, Ohatchee, Oxford and Wellborn high schools over the past two weeks in anticipation of Saturday night’s performance at the Anniston Performing Arts Center at 7:30. For the kids, it’s a day out of their normal classroom routine, but there’s an additional, even better perk in it for them — they’re invited to attend Saturday’s performance for free. Knox Concert Series Education Chair Millie Harris said the hope is that the outreach will help the students enjoy and appreciate the performance more. “I feel like the kids really, really, really seemed to get a lot out of it,” Harris said. Harris taught five English classes at the four schools from Jan. 13-20 with the help of the ACA String Ensemble, a group of musicians consisting of six home-schooled students. Harris said that more than half of the students taught over the past two weeks would be able to attend on Saturday. And they’ll do so having been taught proper etiquette. “A lot of people, not just young students, won’t know when to properly applaud during the performance,” Harris said. The orchestra will play three pieces by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Within the pieces are different movements. Many will applaud during the end of the movements, but Harris teaches that proper etiquette is to wait until the completion of the piece. “Having that knowledge is very important,” she said. “They’ll know a lot of the vocabulary, too. Hopefully they’ll go to the performance with a strong base.” Students got a chance to learn from their peers, too. The ACA String Ensemble performed in front of the classes and showed them how to play their instruments. “I think young people can relate to young people better,” Harris said. The students also learned about the life and influence of Tchaikovsky. Harris said the composer’s works are important to the base of young people’s appreciation of classical music, especially from a younger age. The Nutcracker, one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved works, is taught to students sometimes as early as the third grade. That’s why the Moscow Orchestra is a perfect bridge to appreciating classical music at an older age. “The Nutcracker really got people interested in classical music more than any other piece in history,” Harris said. “Now the students can learn some of his later works, and what a truly colorful person he was.” The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra is the third event in this season’s Knox Concert Series. Two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters is performing on March 6, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra is scheduled for May 1. Kevin Jeffers is the interim entertainment editor for The Star. Judge Kara DioGuardi might get tougher on ‘Idol’ hopefuls By Steve Johnson Chicago Tribune

CHICAGO — There were times last year when Kara DioGuardi felt as if she had — to borrow a phrase — her pants on the ground. Yes, there was the bikini incident in which, in a prearranged stunt, the then-new American Idol judge finished a song alongside a contestant known as “bikini girl” and pulled open her dress to reveal her own two-piece swimsuit (and perfectly toned torso). But where the now-39-year-old, a songwriter by trade, really felt exposed was being up there week to week in front of the contestants, the thousands in the auditorium and the tens of millions more watching on TV. “I never was in front of the camera before Idol,” she says. “That was very difficult to go from the back of the studio to in front of 30 million people. I wish people had been a bit easier on me for that because it’s really scary when you’re just kind of sitting right there and having all eyes on you and being judged.” She said she’s stopped reading Internet comments, but learned last year that “the younger people seemed to have a lot more of a problem with me. I just feel like my personality, at times, didn’t always come through. Like, I’m way more feisty, but I can be fun and maybe I took myself a little seriously at times. I was just, you know, not good TV to them.” That’s a feeling you’d think might lead to more sympathy for the contestants, but DioGuardi says she won’t be taking over the role played by departed judge Paula Abdul, who almost always coddled the contestants. If anything, DioGuardi said, she’s feeling more comfortable and might be tougher this year on the Fox show’s would-be singers. “I may push it to be even more critical just because I think the stakes are even higher in the music business these days,” she says. “I’m not trying to hurt anyone. I’m trying to help them and tell them, ’Look, you’ve got to stand out.”’ DioGuardi made her mark writing, co-writing and/or producing hits for, among others, Christina Aguilera (”Ain’t No Other Man”), Kelly Clarkson (”Walk Away”) and Cobra Starship (”Good Girls Go Bad”). Now, after a season as an Idol judge and being asked to come back this year, she’s become a celebrity for — as Idol judges do — expressing an almost purely advisory opinion. The winners of the talent contest are determined by audience vote; the judges are there to put in words what viewers might be thinking, except with more use of the word “pitchy.” Comedian Ellen DeGeneres has joined the judging panel. And although none of the DeGeneres shows has aired yet, DioGuardi said she’s been impressed. Idol was in the middle of taping Hollywood Week last week, which winnows the regional winners down to a set of finalists, and DeGeneres “is doing a phenomenal job,” DioGuardi said.

NBC’s spy comedy ‘Chuck’ goes a bit 007, and viewers are tuning in By David Hiltbrand The Philadelphia Inquirer

Michael Becker/MCT

Kara DioGuardi says she was never in front of the camera before ‘American Idol.’ “She’s funny. She’s critical at times. She comments on things that are very specific to the music or the way they’ve changed the melody or their performance. I think people are going to be so impressed by her.” The other judging change is merely prospective at the moment. Simon Cowell, who happily wears the metaphorical black hat to match his actual black T-shirts, has said that he’ll leave after this ninth season of the show. DioGuardi thinks the departure is for real — not a ploy. “I think when he says something, he’s pretty serious,” she said. But as much as Cowell draws attention for his acerbic attempts at wit, the show is bigger than he is, she said. “We’re all sad to see him go. He’s an incredible judge. I was a fan of his before I came on the show, and I’m still a fan of his,” she said. “I have mad respect for that guy. He’s able to say things nobody else could say in a way that nobody else could even think of coming up with those things. “So, of course, the dynamic will change. But I don’t think the strength of the show will change.”

NEW YORK — The sprawling NBC Experience Store in Rockefeller Center is “the place to go if you’re shopping for a Jim (Mad Money) Cramer bobblehead or a Biggest Loser refrigerator magnet. The Law & Order coffee mug? Right behind you. Action figures of the villainous Sylar? They’re over in the clearance section. (Sorry, Heroes fans. That can’t be a good sign.) A big crowd has lined up inside the store on this raw winter morning to get autographs from and have their pictures taken with Zachary Levi, the star of Chuck (Mondays, NBC). The show, a frisky but ratings-challenged espionage/comedy mash-up, has averted cancellation twice, primarily because of the ardor of its fan base. So Levi, 29, ends up making a lot of personal appearances. The grassroots campaign seems to be paying off. A couple weeks into its third season, Chuck has increased its audience by more than 20 percent from last year. “Word of mouth has been a big factor in the numbers picking up. Our fans are very passionate,” Levi says. NBC also has been promoting the show relentlessly, he adds. Indeed, watching the network’s NFL Wild Card playoff doubleheader earlier this month, you saw so many plugs for Chuck that you may have thought it was a new brand of beer. If you haven’t tasted this heady brew yet, the series revolves around Chuck Bartowski, who lives uneasily in two worlds. On the day shift, he’s a nerdy computer-support tech with a pocket protector and name tag, working at a big-box store called Buy More. After a massive database of highly classified material is downloaded into his brain, Chuck is also dragged along on dangerous spy missions by Casey (Adam Baldwin), a lethal NSA agent, and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski), a stunning CIA operative. Chuck has been implanted with a new computer program, that, like Neo in “Matrix, allows him to instantly master any number of complex skills. Kung fu, flamenco guitar, sword fighting, ballroom dancing, fluency in obscure dialects — they all come easily to Chuck now. Suddenly, he’s more James Bond than Jerry Lewis. “I always did a lot of the stunts,” says Levi, who is taller (6-foot-4) and more dashing than he appears on the tube. “But it used to be mostly falling down and running away. Now, it’s martial arts and gunplay.

Cable’s conquest: Basic, pay channels dominating TV’s midseason arena By Diane Werts Newsday

Network shmetwork — we got cable! That’s where the action is now — as in now, this midseason, with a dozen new dramas and comedies premiering in com-

since The Sopranos proved premium cable meant business in originals, and just eight years since The Shield did it for basic cable. Yet despite being available to tens of millions fewer homes, basic cable mainstays such as TNT’s The Closer and USA’s Burn Notice now draw bigger audiences than all but broadcast’s biggest hits. USA Network boasts this month that it has four weekly nights of at least one original series (Monday-Thursday, counting Monday’s WWE wrestling). FX now runs acclaimed adult shows year-round, with Jan. 25’s return of Damages, giving it three nights weekly (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday). TNT presents a half-dozen of its own dramas, including just-back Leverage, and even AMC has award-winners such as Mad Men and Breaking Bad. And let’s not forget Syfy, which this week debuts the near-future rivalries of Caprica (Friday, 9-11 p.m.), a topical society filled with hightech innovation — and emotional peril. Eric Stoltz stars as an inventor whose creations may include “virtual” people. Scripted shows get cablers more critical notice than cheaper, unscripted shows. But they get more advertiser attention, too. Howe says, “There’s still a cachet around scripted compared to reality,” a genre where many advertisers can be skittish about low production values and controversial behavior. Of course, that’s not an issue in ad-free premium cable, where subscribers pay the freight. But origi-

nals create interest and identity here, too. HBO could divide its history into before The Sopranos and after, while Showtime was largely buzzless before the likes of Queer as Folk and Dexter. By spring, original drama/comedy will be airing three nights a week on both HBO (Sunday, Tuesday, Friday) and Showtime (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday). Joining the fray is No. 3 premium Starz. Long focused on theatrical films, the channel started getting serious about series in 2008 with Crash, the Dennis Hopper drama based on the Oscar-winning film. Last year, its Hollywood-set comedy Party Down became a cult favorite. This week, Starz debuts the audacious moldbreaker Spartacus: Blood and Sand (Friday at 10 p.m.; the premiere also airs at the same time on sister channel Encore), an in-your-face assault of explicit graphic-novel visuals, with more blood, sex and full-frontal nudity than series TV has ever seen. And just as cablers are making moves into broadcasters’ scripted territory, NBC and other networks are taking a trick or two from cable. Have you noticed how “season” premieres in cable often happen twice a year? This month’s much-hyped returns on USA — White Collar, Burn Notice, Psych — are actually continuations of “new” seasons started last year. NBC similarly touted its Heroes return from holiday hiatus this month. ABC will promote “spring seasons” of fall arrivals Flash Forward (March 18) and V (March 30).
