surreptitious \suhr-uhp-TISH-uhs; suh-rep-\ , adjective; 1. Done, made, or gotten by stealth. 2. Acting with or marked by stealth. Origin: Surreptitious comes from Latin surrepticius, “stolen, secret, surreptitious,” from surripere, “to take away secretly; to steal,” from sub-, “under” + rapere, “to seize, to snatch.” Quote: The monitoring is not surreptitious; on the contrary, the defendant and his or her attorney are required to be given notice of the government’s listening activities. — John Ashcroft, “National Security; Prevention of Acts of Violence and Terrorism”, Federal Register 66, No. 211, Oct. 26, 2001 — www.dictionary.com

Newest Discworld book is a delight for fans Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett; Harper, 2009; 400 pages; $25.99

Reviewed by Brian Robinson Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett may take a little getting into for those unfortunate enough to not be fans of his richly detailed and hilarious Discworld series already. The details add a lot, especially since the main plot deals with the fanaticism for English football, putting the reader in the South in the position of recognizing the symptoms but not the specific disease. (And by the way, Roll Tide.) It’s a good story, but the longtime fan will pick up a lot more from it. As with all Pratchett stories, the story itself is just a mirror, reflecting a lot more than the surface. In this case, the warlike football fan cliques hating all others is the condensed version facing Mr. Nutt, a man

(?) of mystery toiling away in the cellars of the wizards’ college Unseen University. Mr. Nutt is clearly not as he seems, knowing everything from advanced math to foreign languages to social and psychological theories. The only gap in his knowledge is where he came from, but there is a clear memory of an anvil and chain. The university, meanwhile, finds out they have to field a football team or lose a grant used for their third-eighth meals of the day and thus clearly critical. The last time they fielded a team was about 300 or so years ago. The game and the wizards have changed since then, both becoming

broader, and the battle lines are firmly embedded among teams and enemies … but even enemies will pull together if an interloper tries to join in. Mr. Nutt’s friends play a part in the story too. There’s Glenda, a gifted cook at the university who mothers all she sees (or is that “smothers?”); Juliet (no coincidence on the name), a fellow worker in the kitchen whose talents lead her to the brink of fame and her lack of smarts leads her to seek advice from Glenda; and Trev, a gifted football player who has sworn off football, until the big game calls him — literally. As always with Terry Pratchett, there is more to the tale. Another great book, more for the fans than a newcomer, but still a good read. Reviewers’ choice for the most intriguing books of the year By Connie Ogle McClatchy Newspapers

We ask the question annually: What were the best books we read this year? We are, as usual, daunted by the task of deciding, because one person can only read so much and still eat, sleep and keep up with the latest developments on Mad Men. We read a lot, though. Laughed (at Nick Hornby’s delightful Juliet, Naked, deceptively breezy and funny but as sharply observant about gender differences and squabbles as any novel out there). Cried (like babies, at the hard-won wisdom in the final lines of Lorrie Moore’s wrenching A Gate at the Stairs). Groaned (at the increasingly ridiculous characters, plot devices and not-so-intriguing secrets of Dan Brown’s tiresome The Lost Symbol). And then cried again because so many people bought it anyway. Here are the books Miami Herald reviewers found most intriguing in 2009. Cheever: A Life, Blake Bailey: This exhaustive biography of the great but flawed Ameri-

can short story writer relies on John Cheever’s painstaking journal (more than 4,000 pages) and Bailey’s superb balance of sympathy and judgement to flesh out the life of a difficult man. The Children’s Book, A.S. Byatt: This fat novel of family dysfunction stretches from the latter days of Britain’s Victorian era to the killing fields of Europe in World War I and explores — deep breath here — secrets, love, innocence, corruption, art, the desire for knowledge, nature, politics, war, sex and power. And puppetry. Columbine, Dave Cullen: Meticulously researched and deeply compassionate, journalist Cullen’s in-depth and sensitive account of the most deadly U.S. high school shooting lays out a timeline, debunks falsehoods, answers questions and even offers plausible explanations for the question that still resounds: How could it happen? Do Not Deny Me, Jean Thompson: Author of the brilliant collection Throw Like a Girl, the astute Thompson resumes her skillful examination of the pitfalls of con-

temporary life and love in 11 memorable stories. The Gate at the Stairs, Lorrie Moore: In the aftermath of 9/11, a Midwestern college girl becomes a nanny to a biracial child, falls in love and otherwise comes of age in Moore’s comic but ultimately harrowing novel. Moore touches on themes of racism, war and family turbulence, and her final lines will pierce you to the bone. The Girl Who Played With Fire, Stieg Larsson: The second installment of the late Swedish writer’s dark and addictive thrillers delves into the ugly past of computer hacker and anti-heroine Lisbeth Salander — and sets U.S. fans clamoring for the third and final book in the series. How to Leave Hialeah, Jennine Capo Crucet: In her debut collection of short stories, Crucet — a “fresh voice in American fiction,” according to reviewer Ariel Gonzalez — displays the ability to tackle a wide range of themes, moods and subjects. And she understands that wherever you go, you never really leave home. Love and Summer, William Trevor: The story opens with

a funeral. But love and its consequences touch the residents of a small Irish town in the 1950s, in particular a young farmer’s wife who has an affair with a traveling photographer. Without Fidel, Ann Bardach: Reporter and Cuba expert Bardach examines the fallout of Fidel Castro’s semi-retirement in Havana, Washington, D.C. and Miami, which she calls “the Cuban triangle of capitals.” Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel: This meaty Man Booker Prizewinner chronicles the life of Thomas Cromwell, the son of a blacksmith who rose to become Henry VIII’s righthand man (and was especially helpful when Henry decided he wanted to marry Anne Boleyn). The Year of the Flood, Margaret Atwood: In this dystopian nightmare, a biological plague wipes out most of humankind. Two women (that we know of ) have survived, both formerly members of the environmental cult God’s Gardeners. Atwood’s compelling, often ironic narrative jumps back and forth in time and revisits some characters from 2003’s Oryx and Crake.

SAN FRANCISCO — The year’s biggest hits on the Internet’s top video channel were anchored by an improbable singing sensation, a groggy boy nursing a sore mouth, a bride and groom dancing down the wedding aisle, supernatural heartthrobs and roller-skating babies. YouTube’s 2009 star was Susan Boyle, the Scottish woman who mesmerized the world with a heartwarming rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream” on a British talent show in April. Boyle, now 48, ended up taking second place in that competition, but no one came close to outshining her on YouTube. Her Britain’s Got Talent videos attracted more than 120 million views worldwide. The second spot, with more than 37 million views, was held by “David After Dentist,” which featured a 7-year-old boy recovering from some dental work that left him feeling disoriented and wondering if he would ever feel normal again. Third place went to “JK Wedding Entrance Dance,” which captured an elaborate routine orchestrated by Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz — flanked by their bridesmaids and groomsmen — just before their July marriage. It attracted more than 33 million views and turned into a prime example of YouTube’s moneymaking potential after Sony claimed its rights to a Chris Brown song, “Forever,” that provided the dance’s soundtrack. Commercials rounded out YouTube’s top five videos for the year. A movie trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon attracted 31 million views, helped by co-stars, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, who have had teen girls swooning over them. Pattinson plays a vampire and Lautner takes a turn as a werewolf. Evian water soaked up 27 million views with three different versions of a clip featuring diaperwearing babies performing roller-skating stunts to a hip-hop beat. YouTube compiled a separate list of the year’s most popular studio-produced music videos. Rapper Pitbull’s “I Know You Want Me” was the category’s top draw with more than 82 million views, trailed by two music videos by teen star Miley Cyrus, “The Climb” (more than 64 million views) and “Party In The USA” (more than 54 million views). Michael Jackson, whose shocking June 25 death made him the most searched subject on Google this year, also left his mark on YouTube in 2009. His name topped YouTube searches during the months of June and July and his 27-year-old music video, “Beat It,” logged more than 25 million views.

SEATTLE — Ten years ago, we would have been blown away by a cell phone with far more computing power and memory than the average PC had in 1999, along with a built-in camera and programs to manage every aspect of our lives. Ten years from now, the iPhone and its ilk will be antiques. Over the next decade, the evolution of computing and the Internet will produce faster, increasingly intelligent devices. More of our possessions will contain sensors and computers that log our activities, building digital dossiers that augment our memories, help us make decisions and tame information overload. Such ideas may sound futuristic and excessive today. And technological predictions are notoriously off-base. Short-term forecasts tend to assume too much change and long-term forecasts underestimate the possibility of sudden, major shifts. Even so, this vision of interconnected devices that produce and filter massive amounts of data in the 2010s is a logical progression of the Web, computers and gadgetry that emerged in the 2000s. Moore’s Law, the principle that computing power doubles every two years without increasing in cost, still rules. Recall the personal computer, circa 2000. It likely had a “clock speed” — a measure of how fast it could do things — just one-sixth of many computers today. Apple’s 1999 iMac came with 64 megabytes of RAM, memory that helps computers switch among programs. Today’s iMac today has 60

times as much. The vintage iMac had a 10-gigabyte hard drive for storing digital photos and other files. Now iPods have more space than that, and iMac drives start at 500 gigabytes. Remember dial-up? In 2000, fewer than 10 percent of U.S. households had broadband Internet, according to Forrester Research. In 2008, 61 percent of homes had it. As computers and Internet connections got faster, we enjoyed them more. In October 2002, the average American spent about 52 hours a month on a home computer, according to the Nielsen Co. This October, the figure was nearly 68 hours a month. We filled ever-more-spacious hard drives with music and photographs, as households with digital cameras jumped from 10 percent in 2000 to 68 percent last year, and those with an MP3 player climbed from less than 2 percent in 2000 to 41 percent in 2008, according to Forrester. We increased the ways we could stay connected: More of us got cell phones, camera phones, smart phones and the iPhone. We bought more

laptops and came to expect Internet connections almost everywhere. Personal home pages were replaced by blogs that could be set up in seconds, which gave anyone with a computer and Web access the potential to reach a bigger audience than many newspapers. First-generation social networks, little more than online address books, gave way to sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Online, we also tripped over the line between private and public. We shared intimate details with our network of online “friends,” and sometimes it was simply too much information, especially when our boss was reading. All these changes unfolded because of an explosion in computing power and connectivity that only figures to accelerate in the next decade. In the next decade as conjured by Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey, all that information will be available instantaneously, anywhere. He imagines spotting an acquaintance at a conference and having at his fingertips links to the person’s

most recent research, plus a reminder of her husband’s name. Software will remember everything McQuivey buys, reads online and watches on TV. A “smart filter” will use his past choices to suggest the next book or show, or even what he should eat for dinner. It’s a more powerful version of the way Amazon.com and Netflix make book or movie recommendations. He also thinks we’ll all use this technology just to keep up with everyone else. He likens the situation to calculators in math class: At first teachers banned them but now they’re required. Craig Mundie, Microsoft Corp.’s chief research and strategy officer, believes we are near a long-wishedfor era of computers that respond to speech, gestures and handwriting. In Mundie’s vision, “digital assistant” programs will help us solve specific problems. Imagine you’re moving to a new city and need to find a house. “Relocation assistant” software would listen as you brainstorm out loud about whether you want to drive to work or take the bus, about school preferences and the market value of your current house. As you converse with it, the program scouts real estate listings and plots the best on a map. The 2000s saw Google become one of the world’s most powerful companies because it helped us get a grip on the sprawling content of the Web. What we will need next, however, is a company that doesn’t just organize data. Google, or the next Google, will have to synthesize all that information and help us understand what it all means.

Waits goes to the devil in ‘Parnassus’ By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Tom Waits has given the devil his due with wry song lyrics, asking if the devil made the “world while God was sleeping” or musing “don’t you know there ain’t no devil, there’s just God when he’s drunk.” Now Waits is the devil incarnate in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, playing a dapper demon with a bowler hat, trim suit and pencil-thin mustache who loves nothing better than gambling with people’s souls. Gilliam had the notion of giving the devil an old-fashioned, gentlemanly look. To help capture the devil’s spirit, Waits spent time with some lower primates. “I went to the zoo and watched monkeys for a day,” Waits, 60, said in a phone interview from northern California, where he lives. “I just wanted to be relaxed, because if the devil’s not relaxed, nobody’s relaxed.” Waits’ devil, known as Mr. Nick, may be loose and laid-back, but his outfit is the opposite, tight and constrictive. Waits, whose albums include the Grammy-winning Bone Machine and Mule Variations, has built an impressive side career on screen, appearing in about two dozen films starting with Sylvester Stallone’s Paradise Alley in 1978. He played Jack Nicholson’s hobo pal in Ironweed, one of a threesome of prison escapees in Jim Jarmusch’s Down by Law, Lily Tomlin’s boozy trailer-trash companion in Robert Altman’s Short Cuts and the vampire’s raving-mad devotee in Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula. Waits quickly follows Doctor Parnassus, which opened Christmas Day and expands nationwide Jan. 8, with a small role in Denzel Washington’s doomsday tale, The Book of Eli, debuting Jan. 15. The role in Doctor Parnassus came Waits’ way by chance. He had a bit part in Gilliam’s The Fisher King, and another filmmaker asked Gilliam to see if Waits would be interested in doing voice work for an animated film. “A lot of people try to reach me through other people. Like neighbors I haven’t seen in 30 years,” Waits said.

Tom Waits plays the devil incarnate in a scene from ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.’ Waits wasn’t interested in the other filmmaker’s animation project but asked Gilliam whether there might be a role for him in his new film. He agreed to do the part even before reading the script. The film stars Christopher Plummer as Parnassus, who gained immortality and youth in deals with Waits’ Mr. Nick and now is desperate to save his daughter’s soul from the devil. Heath Ledger, who died while the film was in production, plays a shady charity fundraiser who becomes the key to Parnassus’ wager with Mr. Nick. Book of Eli casts Waits as sort of the pawnbroker of the apocalypse, a man who trades for trinkets left from our civilization after catastrophe levels American society. Washington plays the title role, a roaming prophet protecting a key to humanity’s future. He shares nice moments with Waits when his character comes in looking to trade for a recharge of his portable music player’s battery. “I really liked working with Denzel. He likes to riff. He’ll throw the book out,” Waits said. “I started asking him if he had different stuff. I figured a character like that, end of the world, some new guy comes in from some far-flung who-knows-where, you’re going to ask if he’s got (stuff ).

‘You got any spark plugs? You got any matches?’ ... We started going back and forth like that.” Film work has brought unexpected benefits, big and small. Waits got to keep the bowler hat from Doctor Parnassus, making it part of his stage persona in his 2008 tour and wearing it on the cover of his Glitter and Doom live album that came out in November. “I’m cheap. I got a free hat out of the deal,” Waits said. “I was really against the bowler hat. I wanted something a little more pointy.” He bought a mouse to audition for a character in The Green Mile who has a pet rodent. Waits didn’t get the part, but he kept the mouse. “I was about to let him loose in a vacant lot in Hollywood, and we looked at each other, and I said, ‘OK, all right,’ and I put him in my pocket and I flew home with him. That was before the mouse detectors at the airport,” Waits said. While doing the songs for Coppola’s 1982 romance, One From the Heart, Waits met wife Kathleen Brennan, who was a script analyst. His songwriting partner ever since, Brennan has had a huge influence on Waits’ music as he moved from the boozy beatnik style of his 1970s albums into the junkyard percussion, carnival-on-acid sound that backs much of his work from the 1980s on.

1. Maxwell, BLACKsummers’night Maxwell’s R&B masterstroke topped charts with a poise that evoked past, present and futures unknown. And while the neo-soulman’s falsetto can bend time, heartbreak remains inescapable. 2. jj, jj no. 2 From Gaga to Glambert, eccentrics ruled 2009. So it only makes sense that the year’s best debut came from crypto-genius Swedes who sound like Enya covering Lil Wayne at Lilith Fair 2015. Right? 3. Animal Collective, Merriweather Post Pavilion A hallucinogenic formlessness has always throbbed at Animal Collective’s gooey center, but the band’s glorious new album flickered and quaked toward something resembling pop. 4. DJ Quik & Kurupt, BlaQKout These left coast rap vets didn’t rest on their laurels so much as mutate them into a new g-funk dialect. The masses ignored it, but let’s hope Dr. Dre won’t. 5. Paramore, Brand New Eyes Having survived the teenage wasteland that is Warped Tour, Paramore tackled young adulthood with a snarl that made the pre-fab angst of its peers feel like kid stuff. 6. Brad Paisley, American Saturday Night Hopeless romantic. Unbridled optimist. Caring dad. Carefree dude. With his strongest album yet, country’s leading man felt like a natural in every role. 7. Phoenix, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix Dormez-vous, America? After running a sleeper campaign for rock-band-of-the-decade, these fabulous Frenchmen finally dropped an album that stateside eardrums couldn’t ignore. 8. Wale, Attention Deficit The Washington rapper’s long-anticipated treatise on beats, rhymes and life in the DMV was totally worth the wait. 9. Aventura, The Last Melding traditional Dominican bachata with prickly sweet pop hooks, this Bronx foursome may have invented a new kind of sugar high. 10. Jon Hassell, Last Night the Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes in the Street With his 15th studio album, the esteemed jazz trumpeter evaporated Miles Davis’s cosmic slop into a resplendent sonic mist.

WORST 1. Jay-Z, The Blueprint 3 BP3 still leaves me cold. Doesn’t the greatest rapper who ever lived have better things to do than shake his cane at the AutoTune generation? 2. Grizzly Bear, Veckatimest The only thing more exhausting than listening to the hosannas heaped on this band is listening to this band. Masterfully sung, but suffocatingly pretty. 3. Chris Cornell, Scream Forgive me for hoping the decade’s chief pop architect (producer Timbaland) and the most under-utilized larynx in rock (Cornell) might actually make something awesome.

Pieces of a Dream makes live strides Pieces of a Dream Soul Intent Kindred spirits: Grover Washington Jr., Jeff Lorber, Gerald Albright Soul Intent isn’t the first time the smooth-jazz group Pieces of a Dream has promised to return to its roots by emphasizing a more “live” ensemble punch. But now founding members James K. Lloyd and Curtis Harmon have made significant strides in that direction. Although the Philly ensemble hasn’t abandoned a polished sound developed over three decades, its latest CD offers welcome alternatives to the customary pop-jazz sheen created by synth tracks and electronic programming. After getting off to a routine start, the album is energized by several tracks in which Lloyd and Harmon collaborate playfully with bandmates and others in a small combo setting. “Hindsight,” for starters, offers an engaging excursion into funk, with Harmon’s drums emphatically underscoring the keening sax work of Eddie Baccus Jr. Similarly inspired by vintage R&B grooves, “Things Are Looking Up” revolves around the kind of catchy theme that wouldn’t sound out of place on a David Sanborn disc. “D Fuse the Situation,” a tribute in part to Herbie Hancock, occasionally evokes the era of seminal fusion jazz and also benefits from a streamlined arrangement. Elsewhere, the duo can’t resist introducing smooth-jazz cliches — the handclap beats on the album’s title, for example. But familiar tacks and textures aside, “Soul Intent” lives up to its billing more often than not. — Mike Joyce, The Washington Post

This decade belonged to music fans By Greg Kot Chicago Tribune

“It’s up to you” — so said Radiohead when fans clicked to download the band’s In Rainbows album from its Web site in 2007. Radiohead had become the equivalent of the busker on the street corner, playing for tips. But as one of the biggest bands in the world, Radiohead also was posing a question: “What’s music worth?” That was the decade’s signature moment in pop music, a sign that fans — once a faceless marketing demographic — were now de facto distributors, marketers, publicists and coconspirators. Previous decades were dominated by personalities and movements, largerthan-life figures such as Elvis Presley and the Beatles, and cultural shifts such as hip-hop, rave music and punk. But the 2000s belonged to music technology and delivery systems. Most of all, the decade belonged to fans. The combination of broadband Internet access and file-trading software such as Napster seized power and control over music from a handful of corporations and transferred it to the laptops and cell phones of consumers. Since 2000, the industry has seen its business cut by one-third to less than $10 billion annually, while compact disc sales have been chopped in half, to fewer than 500 million annually. Though sales of digital music have increased, those gains are far outweighed by rogue peer-to-peer file-trading networks. Web-tracking services estimate that for every digital file that is sold, 40 are traded in violation of U.S. copyright law. Even as massive judgments were awarded to the music industry in highly publicized copyright infringement trials against Jammie Thomas-Rasset and Joel Tenenbaum, jurists noted the inadequacy of 20th century copyright law in addressing the new digital reality. Though a jury ultimately awarded the record industry $1.92 million in damages because Thomas-Rasset was found to have made 24 copyrighted music files available on her home computer, she “acted like countless other Internet users,” U.S. District Judge Michael Davis said. “Her alleged acts were illegal, but common.” Copyright holders have reason to gripe. Intellectual property that consum-

Special to The Star

Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood performs at the Heineken Music Hall on May 9, 2006. Radiohead took music in a new direction this decade by letting customers pay whatever price they wished for the band’s 2007 album ‘In Rainbows.’ ers covet is certainly worth something — as Radiohead’s In Rainbows marketing strategy implied. Yet the industry is hardly blameless in the shift to illegal file-sharing. As consumers made their desires clear by shifting from physical product to digital music, important catalogs such as the Beatles and AC/ DC still can’t be purchased from legitimate music stores like Apple’s iTunes. But fans can download the songs of any band through countless black-market sites; indeed, just about any song you can possibly think of is a mouse click away, for free. As recently as a decade ago, it could take the dedicated fan months to track down obscure releases. Now they can be found in a matter of seconds, turning music into the cultural equivalent of tap water or oxygen. More music is more accessible to more people than ever, and yet that very ubiquity makes it feel somehow less essential. Music fans hang on to their portable music players, the iPod in particular, rather than the music they hold. They collect music and then dispose of it, certain they can replace it with a few mouse clicks. Just about everything (except for maybe the latest American Idol star) feels smaller, more niche. The age of the Bea-

tles, U2 and Madonna — the all-encompassing global superstar — is in decline. Within this fragmented culture, in which every movement no matter how obscure has its own Web site and cult following, great music still is being made. Communities of listeners are sprouting up for countless styles of music and tiny underground explosions of creativity that in past decades wouldn’t have stood a chance of getting noticed. There’s hope for the little guy and gal who can’t get a deal with one of the major labels. But the question remains, what’s the music worth? It leads to more riddles: How will content creators get paid, and by whom? Who will decide what constitutes legal file sharing? Can the notion of an Internet that is democratic co-exist with 20th century copyright law? Now all industries that depend on intellectual property for revenue — movies, television, books, video, newspapers, magazines — face a similar crisis. As this anxious decade comes to a close, we are no closer to a definitive solution, a new business model, than we were at its chaotic start. But Radiohead’s approach suggested that the very notion of an all-encompassing business model may be outmoded. It’s not a one-size-fits-all world anymore.

‘Parnassus’ a farcical juggling act the imaginarium of doctor parnassus HH1/2 Rating: PG for violent images, some

sensuality, language and smoking Running time: 2:02 STARRING: Christopher Plummer, Lily Cole, Tom Waits, Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell

By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press

By JAKE COYLE Associated Press

Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is more than a peculiar coda for Heath Ledger. It’s not just a trivia answer — though that may well be its fate. Parnassus goes down in the books as another entry in Gilliam’s history of remarkable production misfortunes, including the shuttering of his The Man Who Killed Don Quixote and the tragic loss of his star, Ledger, while filming this movie. With relatively few changes, Gilliam and co-writer Charles McKeown refashioned the script so that Ledger’s part could be finished with three actors filling in. The resulting film is an outlandish juggling act. It teeters, creaks and breaks at the seams, but somehow holds together better than you would expect and better than such an extravagant farce should. It ultimately spins out of control, but one still leaves the theater impressed by Gilliam’s resilient skill at creating such ornate tales. In modern-day London along the shadows of the River Thames, Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) leads his traveling show on a large, unwieldy horse-drawn carriage. With him are his 15-year-old daughter, Valentina (Lily Cole); his sidekick, Percy (Verne Troyer); and the young performer Anton (Andrew Garfield). They are a ramshackle lot of apparently faded glory, dressed in Victorian garb and covered in dirty makeup. For drunks spilling out of techno clubs, they offer the gift of story and imagination. When someone takes the stage, Dr. Parnassus meditates and the volunteer goes through a mirror. On the other side is a world of imagination. One of the film’s failings is that it doesn’t quite establish what this world represents. But the surrealism is wonderful, very much reminiscent of the animations Gilliam created

Heath Ledger, left, and Lily Cole are shown in a scene from ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.’ with Monty Python. All who enter are eventually given a vague, symbolic choice between virtue and vice, the latter tantalizing offered by Mr. Nick (Tom Waits), a devil in a bowler hat. Those who choose well emerge from the mirror exuberant and healed; those who don’t never return. We learn that Dr. Parnassus gained his powers in a deal with Mr. Nick struck more than 1,000 years ago. In a second deal, he traded his immortality for youth, promising his daughter to Mr. Nick when she turns 16. Squinty and wearing a thin mustache, Waits plays Mr. Nick as a likable troublemaker; a good sport who relishes a bet and even dryly urges Dr. Parnassus to “accentuate the positive.” Arriving days before their deadline, he strikes another bargain: Dr. Parnassus can keep his daughter if he can win five souls before Mr. Nick does. And as any baseball fan knows, anything can happen in a five-game series. While the Imaginarium strives for success, they rescue a man in a white suit they find hanging from a noose under a bridge — our harrowing, creepy first sight of Ledger. The

troupe takes him in and soon finds the man is useful in bringing crowds to the Imaginarium. This is Ledger as a showman. He’s charismatic and charming, easily winning over volunteers. But he’s also jittery from the anxiety of the secrets he keeps from his new friends. Ledger’s performance outside of the mirror is complete but somewhat one-dimensional. He never got the chance to play the scenes inside the mirror — and that’s where the battle for his soul takes place. For all its bizarre contraptions, Gilliam’s film is essentially about a father’s misdeeds coming back to haunt him. The dependably excellent Plummer plays Dr. Parnassus with weariness, like an artist gone too long without an audience. One is tempted to compare Doctor Parnassus to another film making the case for wonder: James Cameron’s Avatar. Cameron’s fantasy is bright colors and violence, good and evil. Gilliam’s is a faded, absurdist magic that strikes more true to the messiness of life. Messy is one thing, but overstuffed is another. Gilliam remains a talented juggler — now if only he would toss fewer things in the air.

TORONTO — Terry Gilliam has endured so many obstacles on his films, his life story could be the stuff of some cosmic filmmaker’s wild fable about a hamstrung artist, titled “The Curse of Gilliam.” He fought epic battles with studio bosses on Brazil and The Brothers Grimm. His Don Quixote fantasy with Johnny Depp shut down just days into shooting. His latest, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, seemed doomed after star Heath Ledger died midway through the shoot. Gilliam initially felt he had to scrap the film, in which Ledger plays a shady charity fundraiser who falls in with a theatrical troupe that travels modern London in a horse-drawn, medievallooking contraption. “Star dies in the middle of the movie. What are you doing? This doesn’t happen. What movie has carried on in that situation?” Gilliam said in an interview over lunch at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Doctor Parnassus played in advance of its theatrical release Friday. “I thought, there is karma, and it hates me. I don’t believe in a god, but karma, whatever that is, is out there to get me.” Resigned to letting another unfinished film go, Gilliam found his collaborators would not let him off so easily, insisting “you’re going to finish this film, and that’s it. It’s Heath’s last show. We’re not going to let that be buried,” Gilliam said. The solution: Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell stepped in to finish Ledger’s role for three fantasy sequences as the character steps through a magic mirror. The end credits bear the loving dedication, “A film from Heath Ledger and friends.” Gilliam’s affection for Ledger always is evident, even as he wisecracks about the strains of finishing the film without him. “It had to be good enough to be Heath’s last movie, so I hate that kind of pressure. I was moaning about Heath all the time. (He) goes and dies and sticks me with this one,” Gilliam said, letting loose with one of his trademark piercing cackles. Doctor Parnassus stars Christopher Plummer in the title role, an ancient man who gained immortality and youth in deals with the devil. Gilliam wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator Charles McKeown. “I think he’s all the characters, really, in his movies. He unscrews the top of his head, and they all crawl out at different times of the day and night,” said Waits, who also had a small role in Gilliam’s The Fisher King. “When you’re working with him, it’s easy, because they’re all born out of him, and if you want to make any alterations, you’re talking to the tailor. It’s fun to do.”

Jan. 1-7, 2010 The Washington Post Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs Writer-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller populate the island of Swallow Falls with wacky characters and let them loose in inventive ways. Take would-be scientist Flint Lockwood (voice of Bill Hader), who wears the indestructible spray-on shoes that made him a laughingstock as a child, and police chief Earl Deveraux (Mr. T), whose love for his son is matched only by his love for short shorts. Salvation for the residents of depressed Swallow Falls, stuck eating sardines every day, Flint’s latest invention makes it rain cheeseburgers. And bacon. And ice cream. But when Flint’s device goes haywire and Swallow Falls is menaced by a perfect storm of enormous food, it’s up to the colorful characters to save the day. Contains brief mild language. The Final Destination 3-D In the latest unoriginal, exhausted sequel, these movies have been reduced to bland killing machines, though this one features aggressive use of 3-D, with everything from race cars, tires and engines to nails from a nail gun, entrails and blood blasting off the screen into our laps. Of the blase cast, only Mykelti Williamson, as a security guard who accepts his fate with the help of his faith, and Nick Zano,

playing a rude, crude and funny frat-boy jerk, stand out. It’s not frightening in the least, with only a few amusing moments, a pedal-and-forehead-to-the-metal racetrack crash opener, and then you just keep time by counting off who survives the initial slaughter and who awaits death. Contains strong, violent and gruesome accidents, language and sexuality. Lorna’s Silence Writers-directors Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne’s principal characters are usually only two or three rungs from the bottom already, which makes their imminent plunge not just desperate but dire. The protagonist is Lorna (Arta Dobroshi), an Albanian emigre and player in a marriage-for-immigration racket, whose conspirators would rather kill her husbandof-convenience, Claudy (Jirimie Renier) than wait for a divorce. Does she save the husband or save herself? Lorna is at the intersection of economic salvation and moral damnation, with very few places to turn that don’t involve a head-on collision with a nasty fate. The story is built on tiny increments of tantalizing details, meted out with chest-tightening tension. Contains sexual content, drug content, nudity and vulgarity. Also: Big Love: The Complete Third Season, Chuck: The Complete Second Season and 10 Things I Hate About You: Special Edition.

WASHINGTON — Michael Jackson’s Thriller video, with that unforgettable graveyard dance, will rest among the nation’s treasures in the film archive at the Library of Congress. The 1983 music video directed by John Landis is still the subject of lawsuits over profits. Now it’s also one of 25 films to be selected Wednesday for preservation in the 2009 National Film Registry. Thriller is the first music video named to the registry. Joining the King of Pop will be the Muppets from 1979’s The Muppet Movie — the first time on the big screen for Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy — and the 1957 sci-fi classic The Incredible Shrinking Man, among other titles. The library works with movie studios to ensure original prints are kept safe and acquires copies for preservation in its own vaults.

Napster, SUVs hot then not during decade By DERRIK J. LANG Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — With more fads than folks at an American Idol audition, the past decade has been a difficult time to culturally define. One day, everyone was updating their MySpace profiles while sporting Ugg boots and sipping cosmopolitans. The next, they were creating Facebook pages while donning Ed Hardy T-shirts and downing energy drinks. Superheroes, disaster movies, reality TV, professional wrestling and a boy wizard named Harry Potter weathered the decade’s ever-changing pop culture storm while others rode the aughts like a roller coaster. Britney Spears was in, then out, then in again, advantageously morphing herself from teen queen to train wreck to pop diva within the 10-year span. Others returned from yesteryear — or space, as in the case of the reinvigorated Star Wars and Star Trek franchises — to reclaim their pop culture glory. Not every entertainment hallmark was so successful in overcoming revolving taste buds. Here are 10 things that were oh-sohot at the beginning of the ’00s that turned totally cold by the bitter end: n “Wassup?” Those once funny Budweiser beer commercials had the nation growling “wassup?” after the campaign debuted at the end of 1999. The wacky greeting went on to face a barrage of parodies in the new millennium. The original “wassup?” dudes reteamed in 2008 for a viral video marking President Barack Obama’s win before quickly fading back into obscurity. n Napster. The free file-sharing service was the “it” way to grab digital tunes at the dawn of the 21st century. Created by 19-year-old Shawn Fanning, the program ignited a legal brouhaha with the recording industry. By the time Napster transformed into a subscription service, listeners had moved on to iTunes. Today, Napster is owned by Best Buy. n Sport Utility Vehicles. When gas was still below $2 a gallon, supersized rides enjoyed a passionate following among musicians, professional athletes and other celebrities who needed big cars to accommodate their big egos. As the green movement grew throughout the ’00s, many stars traded in their gas-guzzling luxury SUVs for sleek eco-friendly hybrids. n Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? Fifty women vied to be the bride of mystery man Rick Rockwell, who picked nurse Darva Conger to wed in an impromptu 2000 ceremony that drew over 20 million viewers. The pair later annulled the marriage, and Fox opted against future installments. Viewers everywhere felt guilty for watching the sleazy TV spectacle. n Magazines. Long before the world was bookmarking blogs and social networking sites, glossy magazines were the pre-eminent place to learn about timely trends. The medium suffered as more folks went online and the

economy went south. The end of the decade saw the demise of publications including Gourmet, CosmoGirl, Jane, Blender, Giant, Cookie and PC Magazine. n Nintendo GameCube. In 2001, five years before Nintendo revolutionized gaming with the Wii, the “Mario Bros.” mastermind plopped down the GameCube, the Wii’s itty-bitty precursor featuring a clunky controller. The console’s robust graphics initially piqued players’ interest, but the GameCube could not overcome Sony’s mega-popular PlayStation 2 system. n Mel Gibson. The suave actor-director was riding high at the beginning of the aughts with The Patriot, What Women Want and The Passion of the Christ, but what he will likely be remembered most for this decade is his infamous slur-filled 2006 drunken driving arrest. After completing his three-year probation, Gibson’s conviction was expunged in 2009. n Old Navy Performance Fleece. Complete with its own catchy jingle (“Old Navy! Old Navy! Performance

fleece!”), it was the must-have affordable accessory. Now, no one would be caught dead in a “tech vest.” And the retailer’s celebrity commercial cameos — hey, look, it’s Morgan Fairchild and Sherman Hemsley! — have been replaced by talking mannequins. n Pokemon. The “pocket monster” franchise was a full-blown craze with kids at the start of the ’00s, having already spawned several movies, TV series, video games and toys. Love for Pikachu waned, though, as tots turned into teens. “Pokemon 4Ever,” the third Pokeman film, flopped at the box office and subsequent sequels went direct to DVD in the U.S. n ’NSync. The boy band jump-started the ’00s with the album No Strings Attached, which continues to hold the record for biggest first-week CD sales at 2.4 million. Another album and a few tours later, the quintet quietly disbanded. They spent the rest of the aughts pursuing solo careers while simultaneously addressing reunion rumors. Maybe next decade?!

Little Falcon Heene of “Balloon Boy” fame surely had no idea he was encapsulating an entire year of popular culture when he told his parents on national TV: “You guys said that we did this for the show.” Seeking fame is nothing new for Americans — after all, it was back in 1968 that Andy Warhol first postulated that everyone would get 15 minutes. Without further ado, our chronological journey through some of the top pop culture moments of 2009:

OCTOBER

JANUARY: One of the year’s truly peculiar stories is born, literally: Nadya Suleman, bearing a disconcerting resemblance to Angelina Jolie, gives birth to octuplets, which expand the single mom’s brood to 14 and earn her the moniker “Octomom.” On a happier note, 57year-old U.S. Airways pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger saves a planeful of passengers when he glides his disabled aircraft into the Hudson River, a feat that will garner him rock-star status.

FEBRUARY: Star Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is caught in a tabloid photo smoking from a marijuana pipe. Sponsor Kellogg Co. drops him, but he largely survives — and in the summer, following a three-month competition ban, he’s the new face of the Subway sandwich chain.

MARCH: Surprise! Bristol Palin confirms she’s done with Levi Johnston, and experts, who note that most teen pregnancies end in broken

Six-year-old Falcon Heene sits cross-legged on the roof of his family’s van outside his home in Fort Collins, Colo., after he was found hiding in a box in a space above the garage. He had initially been reported to be aboard a balloon and then carried by high winds on to the plains of eastern Colorado. relationships, hope it can be a teachable moment. Pop singer Rihanna is shockingly beaten by her boyfriend, singer Chris Brown, and initially returns to him. Later Rihanna leaves Brown and becomes a voice against domestic violence.

APRIL A Washington magazine puts a shirtless President Barack Obama on its cover and people ask if the presidential pecs, however buff, are appropriate fodder for a magazine cover. But the real star of the month is Susan Boyle, a plainlooking woman of 48 from Scotland who stuns the world with her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” on Britain’s Got Talent.

culture, resigns as governor of Alaska, a move that baffles many but frees her to spend time on her upcoming book, Going Rogue.

JUNE

AUGUST

Michael Jackson’s stunning, premature death at 50 becomes one of those “Where were you when?” moments, and leads to a frenzied renewal of interest in his life, music and dance moves, even for little kids. Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina puts his bizarre and indelible stamp on the common tale of the straying politician, going AWOL for five days as he trysts with a lover in Argentina. His flowery declarations of love and endless self-analysis fascinate the nation — almost as much as Jon and Kate Gosselin do when they announce they’re splitting.

Chilling news for reality television: Ryan Jenkins, known as a sweet-talking contestant on VH1’s Megan Wants a Millionaire, hangs himself days after his ex-model wife’s body is discovered, mutilated and stuffed into a suitcase. The case of Jenkins, who had been charged in the death, leads to calls for stricter background screenings of reality show contestants.

JULY Sarah Palin, long a crossover star between the worlds of politics and pop

SEPTEMBER What do a South Carolina congressman, a bad-boy rap singer and the world’s top women’s tennis player have in common? They are all really rude in September. For Serena Williams, it’s a profane outburst at a lineswoman — unfortunate but much more common than, say, heckling a sitting

Andre Agassi had so cleaned up his bad-boy image over the years that it’s a shock to hear him admit, in a new book, that he used crystal meth, lied to wriggle out of a failed drug test, and even hated tennis. But this is really the month of Richard Heene’s brazen and misguided attempt to use his 6-yearold son as a means to a reality show gig.

NOVEMBER What a month in pop culture. Ordinarily we’d give it to Palin for the enormity of the crowds at her book tour. Or to Winfrey, who announces she’s leaving her talk-show perch. Or to Lambert again, whose over-the-top sexual gestures at the American Music Awards anger ABC and many fans.

But no, this month belongs to a socialite couple from Virginia, Tareq and Michaele Salahi, who manage to breach vaunted White House security with no weapons other than very nice clothes and a heavy dose of social ambition. Four days after the state dinner debacle, a strange accident happens in an upscale Florida gated community. Golfer Tiger Woods drives into a fire hydrant and a tree ...

DECEMBER And the fallout seems to know no bounds, as tabloids come out with new reports daily of women claiming to have had sex with the golfer, including at least one former reality cast member. Weeks after the accident, Woods remains out of sight, trying to salvage his marriage and image. But things are sure looking good for Boyle, whose album, “I Dreamed a Dream,” debuts at No. 1. And that’s not all — her YouTube videos from the show are the most-watched all year, with more than 120 million views.

Broadcasters’ woes could spell trouble for free TV By ANDREW VANACORE Associated Press

NEW YORK — For more than 60 years, TV stations have broadcast news, sports and entertainment for free and made their money by showing commercials. That might not work much longer. The business model is unraveling at ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox and the local stations that carry the networks’ programming. Cable TV and the Web have fractured the audience for free TV and siphoned its ad dollars. The recession has squeezed advertising further, forcing broadcasters to accelerate their push for new revenue to pay for programming. That will play out in living rooms across the country. The changes could mean higher cable or satellite TV bills, as the networks and local stations squeeze more fees from pay-TV providers such as Comcast and DirecTV for the right to show broadcast TV channels in their lineups. The networks might even ditch free broadcast signals in the next few years. Instead, they could operate as cable channels — a move that could spell the end of free TV as Americans have known it since the 1940s. “Good programing is expensive,” Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corp. owns Fox, told a shareholder meeting this fall. “It can no longer be supported solely by advertising revenues.” Fox is pursuing its strategy in public, warning that its broadcasts could go dark Friday for subscribers of Time Warner Cable, unless the pay-TV operator gives Fox higher fees. The future of free TV also could be altered as the biggest pay-TV provider, Comcast Corp., prepares to take control of NBC. Comcast has not signaled plans to end NBC’s free broadcasts. But Jeff Zucker, who runs NBC and its sister cable channels such as CNBC and Bravo, told investors this month that “the cable model is just superior to the broadcast model.” The traditional broadcast model works like this: CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox distribute shows

“Good programming is expensive. It can no longer be supported solely by advertising revenue.” — Rupert Murdoch, owner, News Corp. through a network of local stations. The networks own a few stations in big markets, but most are “affiliates,” owned by separate companies. Traditionally the networks paid affiliates to broadcast their shows, though those fees have dwindled to near nothing as local stations have seen their audience shrink. What hasn’t changed is where the money mainly comes from: advertising. Cable channels make most of their money by charging pay-TV providers a monthly fee per subscriber for their programing. With both advertising and fees, ESPN has seen its revenue grow to $6.3 billion in 2009 from $1.8 billion a decade ago, according to SNL Kagan estimates. Cable channels also have been able to fund high-quality shows, such as AMC’s Mad Men, rather than recycling movies and TV series. That, plus a growing number of channels, has given cable a bigger share of the ad pie. In 1998, cable channels drew roughly $9.1 billion, or 24 percent of total TV ad spending, according to the Television Bureau of Advertising. By 2008, they were getting $21.6 billion, or 39 percent. Having two revenue streams — advertising and fees from payTV providers — has insulated cable channels from the recession. By contrast, over-the-air stations have been forced to cut staff, and at least two broadcast groups sought bankruptcy protection in 2009. Fox illustrates the trend: Its broadcast operations reported a 54 percent drop in operating income for the quarter that ended in September. Its cable channels, which include Fox News and FX, grew their operating income 41 percent. Analyst Tom Love of ZenithOptimedia estimates that ad revenue at the big networks

dropped 9 percent in 2009 and will be followed by an 8 percent drop in 2010 and zero growth in 2011. A small chunk of the ad revenue is being recouped online, where the networks sell episodes for a few dollars each or run ads alongside shows on sites such as Hulu. Media economist Jack Myers projects online video advertising will grow into a $2 billion business by 2012, from just $350 million to $400 million in 2009. But that is not significant enough to make up for the lost ad revenue on the airwaves. Advertisers spent $34 billion on broadcast commercials in 2008, down by $2.4 billion from two years earlier, according to the Television Bureau of Advertising. So rather than wait for the Internet to become a bigger source of income, the networks and local stations are mimicking what cable channels do: They’re charging pay-TV companies a monthly fee per subscriber to carry their programming. Since 1994, the Federal Communications Commission has let networks and their affiliates seek payments for including their programming in the pay-TV lineup. The big networks also were content to let their broadcast stations essentially be subsidized by higher fees for the cable channels that fell under the same corporate umbrella. A pay-TV company negotiating with the Walt Disney Co., which owns ABC, is likely paying more for the ABC Family channel than it otherwise would, with the extra assumed to help Disney cover its costs for the ABC network broadcasts. But over time — such contracts generally run about three years — more networks began demanding payments for the stations they own. And affiliates already receiving the fees have

This advertisement released by Time Warner Cable shows a warning that FOX has threatened to pull the plug on Time Warner Cable customers at midnight, New Year’s Eve, unless the cable company gives in to demands for price increases. bargained for more money. Some talks have been tense. In 2007, Sinclair Broadcast Group, which operates 32 network-affiliated stations around the country, pulled its signals for nearly a month from Mediacom Communications Corp., which provides cable TV to about 1.3 million subscribers, mainly in small cities. The American Cable Association says its members — mainly small cable TV providers — have seen their costs for carrying local TV stations more than triple over the past three years. The group’s head, Matt Polka, says those fees have gone “straight to consumers’ pocketbooks” through higher cable bills. Analysts estimate CBS managed to get as much as 50 cents per subscriber in its most recent talks with pay-TV providers that carry CBS-owned stations. CBS Corp. chief Leslie Moonves said such fees should add “hundreds of millions of dollars to revenues annually.” That could be just the beginning. CBS and Fox are also asking for a portion of the fees that their affiliates get, arguing that the networks’ shows are what give local stations the leverage to ask

for fees. Over time, the networks might be able to get even more money by abandoning the affiliate structure and undoing a key element of free TV. Here’s why: Pay-TV providers are paying the networks only for the stations the networks own. That amounts to a little less than a third of the TV audience, which means local affiliates recoup two-thirds of the fees. If a network operated purely as a cable channel and cut the affiliates out, the network could get the fees for the entire pay-TV audience. If forced to go independent, affiliates would have to air their own programming, including local news and syndicated shows. Fitch Ratings analyst Jamie Rizzo predicts that at least one of the four broadcast networks “could explore” becoming a cable channel as early as 2011. Any shift would take years, as the networks untangle complicated affiliate contracts. At an analyst conference in 2008, CBS’s Moonves called the idea an “a very interesting proposition.” But he added that it “would really change the universe that we’re in.”

Fantasy films Hollywood counters reality with decade of escapism By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood picked the right decade to go over the rainbow. In an era that brought harsh reality home with the war on terror and an economy gone bust, Hollywood became more of a dream factory than ever, embracing fantastic escapism at a time when audiences needed it most. Though key fantasy franchises such as The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter were in the works in the late 1990s, the films began arriving just months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The respite they offered lasted just a few hours, but who wouldn’t want to take a detour to Middle-earth or Hogwarts and forget about the messy state of our own world for that brief time? Fantasy, science-fiction and superhero sagas have been around since the early years of film, with Batman, Superman and Flash Gordon serials, and such classics as The Wizard of Oz. But escapism during the Depression and World War II mostly came in the form of breezy comedies or glossy musical romances. The past decade solidified the fan boy as Hollywood’s key audience, with the final installments of George Lucas’ Star Wars chronicle joining comic-book heroes (Batman, Spider-Man, the X-Men), toy stories (Transformers), and revived franchises (Indiana Jones, Star Trek) to produce a succession of colossal opening weekends. Teenage girls got their own mega-franchise as the supernatural romance Twi-

light and its sequel, New Moon, made pretty boys out of traditionally monstrous vampires and werewolves. Computer animation, pioneered in the 1980s and ’90s, reached new heights with such cartoon smashes as DreamWorks’ Shrek flicks and Pixar Animation’s stream of critical and commercial favorites, among them Finding Nemo, Up” WALL-E and Ratatouille. Live-action filmmakers reinvented visual effects with dazzling digital worlds, from Peter Jackson’s Academy Award-winning finale for The Lord of the Rings to James Cameron’s Avatar. Actors reinvented themselves, too, among them Johnny Depp, who went from that box-office-poison guy who makes weird little arthouse films to one of Hollywood’s most-bankable stars with his Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Robert Downey Jr. emerged from pariah status as a substance abuser to become an unlikely fortysomething superhero in the blockbuster Iron Man and a rare Oscar nominee for broad comedy in Tropic Thunder, closing the decade as the world’s greatest detective in Sherlock Holmes. With an Oscar nomination for last year’s The Wrestler, Downey’s Iron Man 2 co-star Mickey Rourke also is on the cusp of a second career after squandering his early promise with bad-boy behavior that made him practically unemployable in Hollywood. Still in purgatory are Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise, major stars who fell from grace with bad, or just plain weird, behavior. After Gibson made the crucifixion a blockbuster spectator sport with The Passion of the Christ, he alienated fans and colleagues with an anti-Semitic tirade after a drunken-driving arrest. Cruise baffled people as he proclaimed his love for Katie Holmes by jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch like a giddy schoolboy, then angered fans with anti-psychiatry rants and other Scientology preaching. After her divorce from Cruise, Nicole Kidman broke out of his shadow with the supernatural sensation The Others, her radiant musical Moulin Rouge! and an Oscar-winning performance in The Hours. Diversity finally came to the Oscars, practically a whites-only affair the previous 70-plus years. In the last decade, six black actors — including Denzel Washington for The Hurricane, Halle Berry for

Monster’s Ball and Jamie Foxx for Ray — received Oscars, matching the number who had won from 1927 to 1999. Hispanics also made progress with acting Oscars for Penelope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men and Benicio Del Toro for Traffic. Ang Lee pushed the awards envelope for Asians, winning the best-director prize for the gay-cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain and scoring a best-picture nomination on his martial-arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Brokeback Mountain lost best picture to the ensemble drama Crash in one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history. Gay drama did score a victory, however, with last year’s Milk, earning Sean Penn his second best-actor honor, this one for the title role as gayrights pioneer Harvey Milk. Heath Ledger, a best-actor nominee for Brokeback Mountain, was the subject of high drama at the Oscars as his parents and sister accepted his supporting-actor trophy for The Dark Knight last February, just over a year after his death. It was only the second time an actor won an Oscar posthumously. Ledger’s frenzied performance as the Joker in the Batman tale helped elevate The Dark Knight far above its comic-book roots and left fans pondering what else he might have accomplished, both for the franchise and a career cut short.

Seaside Heights winces at ‘Jersey Shore’ By Jacqueline L. Urgo The Philadelphia Inquirer

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. — To some who know it well, this Ocean County beach town is known, not so affectionately, as “Sleazeside.” It’s the summer playground for bored city kids who pack boardwalk bars and nightspots looking for drunken debauchery and quick hookups. When the revelry turns to rivalry, fueled by the alcohol-all-the-time vibe, the place becomes “Seaside Fights.” And if you live in neighboring Seaside Park, you never, ever fail to tell an out-of-towner that you’re not from here. Home is “the Park,” not “the Heights.” Got it? So it’s no surprise to the small group of year-rounders in this now-freezing beach tundra that their town has been given another black eye. The punch was delivered by MTV’s new reality series Jersey Shore, in which eight buxom babes and buff boys — most from New Yawk — make the rounds of clubs like the Beachcomber and Bamboo to compete for time on the hard-drinking, dirty-dancing, Real World-ish soap opera. The tanned, fist-pumping Italian-American cast members’ references to themselves as Guidos and Guidettes — repeated in MTV’s promos — have angered other Italian Americans. State Sen. Joseph F. Vitale, D-Middlesex, chairman of the New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus, last week joined organizations such as the New Jersey-based Italian American service organization UNICO National in calling for the series’ cancellation. “The show is ridiculous and insulting to Italian Americans. It’s despicable,” said Bruce Polcino, a funeral director who lives in Seaside Park. “We’re trying to improve the image of Seaside Heights, and MTV has certainly set us back in doing that,” he said. “People see this and say, ’Gee, no wonder they call the place ’Sleazeside Heights.”’ The much-hyped fourth episode of the series, which began Dec. 3 and will conclude next month, has been a boon to ratings. In it, cast member Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is punched at the Beachcomber Bar & Grill by a male patron whom she accuses of stealing her roommates’ drinks. Some contend that the segment promotes a wrong impression of Seaside Heights as a “free-for-all” town. On Dec. 17, when the episode premiered, it drew 2.5 million viewers, compared with a meager 1.4 million the night the series made its bow. MTV blacked out the moment the assailant’s hand hit Polizzi’s face, though the footage is all over the Internet. MTV has pulled some of its controversial promos for the series, which was taped in August, and issued a statement indicating it did not intend to “stereotype, discriminate, or offend.” But many lifelong residents and local officials say MTV has undone a decade of work to make the resort more family-friendly. While they haven’t exactly mounted a temperance crusade, town leaders have altered zoning to accommodate more condos and fewer bars. Other measures include a crackdown on underage drinking and a ban on smoking on the beach, Borough Administrator John Camera said. Camera doesn’t dispute that there is some reality in the reality series.

A sign off Route 37 welcomes drivers to Seaside Heights, N.J., on Dec. 23. The hearty few who live in Seaside Heights year-round have mixed opinions of MTV’s surprise reality hit ‘Jersey Shore.’ “While the borough did not participate in the production of this television series, we do think that in many ways it is representative of some of the people who come to Seaside Heights,” he acknowledged. “Young people go to bars, and sometimes they get in trouble.” He knows that some locals are “really outraged” by the hedonistic chronicle starring the likes of “DJ Pauly D” Delvecchio, from Johnston, R.I.; Mike “The Situation” Sorrento, from Staten Island, N.Y.; and the abused Polizzi, from Marlboro, N.Y. “They have to remember, the show is about people who come here, not about the town or the people who actually live here,” Camera said. And Brad Ferro, 24, the drunken gym teacher from the Queens borough of New York City who smacked down Polizzi, has been “dealt with,” Camera said. The program “shows he was arrested and that this town is not a free-for-all for these kids,” said Camera, adding that Ferro was found guilty of simple assault and fined, given a suspended sentence of 30 days in jail, and required to take anger-management classes. Others would like to stop putting out the welcome mat for MTV. “I wish they would just stop coming here,” said Louis Dowd, a Toms River, N.J., resident who summers in Seaside Heights and at 15 fits into the cable channel’s demographic.

NEW YORK — The biggest shows of 2009 couldn’t always be contained by the TV screen. There were breakout tabloid scandals with Jon and Kate Gosselin. A wannabe reality TV star crashed the White House. David Letterman’s hanky-panky seized headlines. Oprah Winfrey grabbed the nation’s attention as she began her long goodbye. This was TV run amok. But in 2009 other shows proved outstanding on more manageable terms: as excellent TV shows. They include: n Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO). This season, Curb creator-writer-star Larry David outdid himself. A creator of Seinfeld in another age, he reunited his Seinfeld cast and interlaced his old show with his current one for a brilliant story line that gave Seinfeld fans what they had craved for a decade: an acceptable finale for that beloved comedy. n The Good Wife (CBS). It stars Julianna Margulies as a wife and mother forced to resume her long-ago career as an attorney in the wake of betrayal when her politician hubby, played by Chris Noth, is jailed for corruption and philandering. But what makes it more than a formula legal drama, and more than a series struggling for relevance by using current events as a dramatic contrivance, is smart writing and a splendid cast. That’s a solid formula. n The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson (CBS). The best late-night talk show was better than ever this year, and Ferguson’s winning ratings reflected it. The Scottish-born late-night host, who insists he’s not a late-night host but something else, is clearly gifted at it. He’s brilliant, shrewd, silly and charismatic — as anyone knows who saw him bonding with a guest not usually seen on late-night TV, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu. n Lost (ABC). Another wacky, wacked-out season that showed no concern for time and space constraints and left the viewer’s head reeling. The mind-boggling action on the island, and beyond, set things up for the final season in 2010 which — here’s hoping — will bring everything home. n Mad Men (AMC). Modern living 1960s style got even darker and more gripping this season as the Kennedy presidency ended in Dallas and, in New York City, ad man Don Draper’s world seemed to be collapsing. n Modern Family (ABC). Three households, all unconventional, are blended into this fall’s freshest family comedy. Ed O’Neill and Julie Bowen are among the stars perched on this sitcom family tree.

Little room for daytime cable fights By DAVID BAUDER

background noise during the day, on in the office or home while people are doing something else. Sometimes people briefly visit the networks for a check of the headlines, said CNN’s John King. “You’re coming in for a fix,” King said. “I don’t think you’re coming in for a fight.” At night, it’s different, when fans of Bill O’Reilly, Keith Olbermann, Sean Hannity, Rachel Maddow and the like have time to lounge in their living rooms and hear the news filtered through their favorite personalities. MSNBC’s prime-time lineup of Olbermann and Maddow put the oncestruggling network on the map, establishing itself as a liberal voice during President Barack Obama’s campaign. Even after the election, MSNBC’s prime-time

NEW YORK — Opinionated talk is big business on cable news networks when the sun goes down. But during the day, it’s the complete opposite. MSNBC is shuffling its daytime lineup early next year because its strategy of spreading personality-driven programming throughout the schedule isn’t working. The new approach will emphasize a fast-paced review of the day’s big stories as they break. The prime-time audience for cable news is either substantially different from daytime’s, or viewers simply want to see something different depending on the time of day. Cable news is often considered a form of

has run neck-and-neck with CNN for second place behind the dominant Fox News Channel. MSNBC will beat CNN among its target demographic of 25to-54-year-olds in 2009 for the first year ever, according to the Nielsen Co. Early morning tends to reward personality, too, with the lively Fox & Friends, MSNBC’s Morning Joe and Robin Meade on HLN. Things change when the workday starts. MSNBC didn’t recognize this earlier this year when it gave former CNBC anchor Dylan Ratigan a two-hour show at 8 a.m. and Dr. Nancy Snyderman a medically oriented hour at noon. Ratigan is not shy about spouting off; he apologized last week for being rude to a Florida congresswoman during an interview about health care reform. He proved a bad fit in the morning. MSNBC is cutting his show in half and moving it to 3 p.m. before Chris Matthews. Snyderman’s show was canceled. As replacements, MSNBC will pair Chuck Todd and Savannah Guthrie for one hour at 8 a.m., in a newsy, nonpartisan look at the day’s upcoming news. For the other daytime hours, MSNBC will have general news programming anchored by David Shuster, Tamron Hall, Contessa Brewer and Andrea Mitchell, said Phil Griffin, the network’s chief executive. “We did some experimentation to find out what the audience during the daytime wants and I think we found out they want your basic facts — give me the facts, ma’am,” Griffin said. “We can still do it with our passion and a fast pace.” MSNBC may need to

prove its news commitment to viewers. With news of the attempted terrorist attack on a plane bound for Detroit breaking late on Christmas, the network stuck with pretaped programming. CNN and Fox covered the story much more extensively. Prime-time is much more appointment viewing, Griffin said. His rivals have long acknowledged the differences. During the network’s public battle with the Obama administration this fall, Fox executives made a point of casting daytime differently, saying it is when the network’s news operation operates, as opposed to the editorial section with O’Reilly and Hannity at night. HLN, formerly CNN Headline News, generally runs a continuous “wheel” of half-hour newscasts during the day and opinionated programs led by Nancy Grace at night. The main CNN network, while it has suffered in prime-time, has more than twice MSNBC’s audience from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the Nielsen Co. During the midday hours, MSNBC often runs fifth in its target demo behind Fox, CNN, HLN and CNBC. News junkies who want opinion during the daytime are more likely to seek it out in a different form. Those are the hours when radio stars such as Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Glenn Beck and Ed Schultz air their programs. They’re better-suited to busy people who can listen in their car radios, for example. MSNBC will be committed during the day to making sure that viewers who tune in are told the big stories of the day within five or 10 minutes, Griffin said.
