HONG KONG — The king of kung fu cinema is set to star in a new movie about China’s famed shrine of martial arts, the Shaolin Temple. Jackie Chan will star in the $29 million production, Shaolin, the latest screen portrayal of the 1,500year old chan temple in central China whose famous fighting monks have featured in films by stars such as Bruce Lee and Jet Li, and in the 1970s TV series Kung Fu with David Carradine. Chan’s Chinese-language film will co-star veteran Hong Kong actor Andy Lau, actorsinger Nicholas Tse and Chinese actress Fan Bingbing. The production, said to boast 1,000 real fighting monks and a grand scene in which the temple burns down, will start shooting later this year for release in late 2010. It was announced in a joint statement Thursday by four Chinese film studios: the state-run China Film Group Corp., Emperor Motion Pictures, Huayi Brothers Media Corp. and Beijing Silver Moon Productions Ltd. Hong Kong filmmaker

Benny Chan, who worked with Chan on New Police Story and Rob-B-Hood, will direct and Cory Yuen will serve as action coordinator. Yuen’s credits include Lethal Weapon 4 and X-Men. Shaolin will be an updated version of a 1982 movie, The Shaolin Temple, in which former Chinese kung fu champion Li made his screen debut, playing a boy adopted and trained by Shaolin monks who seeks to avenge the death of his father. The new project could draw more heat for Shaolin Temple abbot Shi Yongxin, who has been accused of high living and seeking publicity for the famed shrine in the Songshan Mountains of central Henan province. He has also faced criticism for upgrading facilities at the once-austere temple. Shi has aggressively promoted the Shaolin brand and has threatened to sue companies that use the temple’s name or image without permission, but the abbot is clearly on board for Chan’s project. “It’s worth cheering that we are now working with the most outstanding production team,” Shi was quoted as saying in the statement Thursday. Chan has most recently been shooting a remake of The Karate Kid in China with Will Smith’s son, Jaden.

Preview of Michael Jackson movie shows in him fine voice NEW YORK — A 12-minute clip of the new Michael Jackson movie This Is It shows a strong-voiced King of Pop enthusiastically practicing some of his biggest hits. Jackson is shown warming up his vocals during a performance of “Human Nature.” That’s followed by Jackson running through the song in various outfits. Later, he playfully dances with a woman as he sings “The Way You Make Me Feel,” touching her thigh and holding her waist. Jackson died June 25 at 50. He was preparing for his comeback concerts in London at the time. This Is It — based on rehearsals for those concerts — will premiere globally on Tuesday and run for two weeks.

Earhart film may spur interest in memorabilia collection WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Officials hope a new movie about aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart causes renewed interest in Purdue University’s big collection of memorabilia about her life. Amelia, which opens today, stars Hillary Swank as the aviator who vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937 during her second attempt to fly around the world. Purdue has the world’s largest collection of papers, memorabilia and artifacts about Earhart, who was a career counselor at the Indiana college from 1935 to 1937. Earhart also was an adviser to the school’s Department of Aeronautics.

Facebook to allow 10-cent Web song gifts from Lala LOS ANGELES — Facebook will soon allow friends to send each other 10-cent Web songs to stream online or 90-cent songs in the MP3 format that recipients can download as gifts from online retailer Lala. The offering will be available by Thursday afternoon, starting with a limited group of Facebook users and spreading gradually. The development, which both companies confirmed Wednesday, bolsters Facebook’s existing gift offerings that include virtual birthday cakes and pints of beer, while putting Palo Alto startup Lala in front of millions of potential new customers. The service will only be available in the U.S. Purchases will use Facebook’s payment system, in which customers buy credits worth 10 cents each with a credit card. — Associated Press

Musicians crank up volume on Gitmo debate By RICHARD LARDNER Associated Press

WASHINGTON — A coalition of mega-bands and singers outraged that music — including theirs — was cranked up to help break uncooperative detainees at Guantanamo Bay is joining retired military officers and liberal activists to rally support for President Barack Obama’s push to shutter the Navyrun prison for terrorist suspects in Cuba. Pearl Jam, R.E.M. and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails are among the musicians who have joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo, which launched Tuesday. On behalf of the campaign, the National Security Archive in Washington is filing a Freedom of Information Act request seeking classified records that detail the use of loud music as an interrogation device. “At Guantanamo, the U.S. government turned a jukebox into an instrument of torture,” said Thomas Blanton, executive director of the archive, an independent, nongovernmental research institute. Based on documents that already have been made public and interviews with former detainees, the archive says the playlist featured cuts from AC/DC, Britney Spears, the Bee Gees, Marilyn Manson and many other groups. The Meow mix cat food jingle, the Barney theme song and an assortment of Sesame Street tunes also were pumped into detainee cells. A November 2008 report by the Senate Armed Services Committee into the treatment of detainees in U.S. custody makes several references to the use of loud music as an interrogation tool. In one case interrogators played music to “stress” Mohamedou Ould Slahi, a citizen of Mauritania who has been at Guantanamo for more than seven years, because he believed music is forbidden, the report says. Over a 10-day period in July 2003, Slahi was questioned by an interrogator called “Mr. X” while being “exposed to variable lighting patterns” and repeated playing of a song called “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” by the band Drowning

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor performs during the Bonnaroo Arts and Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn. Reznor is among the musicians who have joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo. Pool, according to the committee’s report. Maj. Diana Haynie, a spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo, said loud music has not been used with detainees since the fall of 2003. Jayne Huckerby, research director at New York University’s Center for Human Rights and Global Justice, said high-decibel music was also used against detainees at clandestine prisons run by the CIA. As part of an earlier FOIA request for information about these “black sites,” Huckerby received a top-secret CIA document dated December 2005 in which the agency explains that the use of loud music or white noise is needed “to mask sound and prevent communication among detainees.” If decibel levels are kept at 79 or lower — roughly equivalent to a garbage disposal — detainee hearing won’t be damaged, the agency said. Huckerby says that music was

not used as a “benign security tool,” but as a way “to humiliate, terrify, punish, disorient and deprive detainees of sleep, in violation of international law.” CIA spokesman George Little said the CIA used music only for security, “not for punitive purposes — and at levels far below a live rock band.” Founders launched National Campaign to Close Guantanamo with ads on cable television urging Congress to reject the “failed BushCheney policies.” Obama pledged to close the jail by January, but logistical snags and Republican opposition on Capitol Hill have made fulfilling that promise less likely. Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who warns that closing the prison would endanger national security, has fueled the resistance. A group opposing the closure of the prison, Keep America Safe, said in a statement Tuesday that those held at Guantanamo are dedicated to killing Americans.

Recording artist Michael Buble’s newest album, ‘Crazy Love,’ debuted at No. 1 last week.

Buble talks new CD, love, religion By MESFIN FEKADU Associated Press

NEW YORK — Michael Buble recently received a cassette tape of his first performance ever, but it didn’t bring back pleasant memories. “I was absolutely terrible. I didn’t know how to get in and out of the song,” the 34-year-old said embarrassingly of a performance when he was 16. “At that point I didn’t understand the form of a song. So wrong, so terrible.” But even though he went through an awkward stage as a performer, he was convinced that singing was in his future. His faith paid off. His first three CDs have gone gold, platinum and triple-platinum, and his newest one, Crazy Love, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart last week. Buble knows where he’d like the rest of his career to head. “I’ve said it a million times: I would love very much to be known as one of the great entertainers. If that’s me having a big ego, then sorry. I’m shooting for the stars and if I miss I’ll hit the moon and that’s pretty high,” he said. In a recent interview, Buble talked about his religion, the crazy things he’s done for love and his new album, which finds the Canadian-born singer covering songs by Van Morrison, Ron Sexsmith and the Eagles. The Associated Press: You’re covering old school songs in this digital era of the music industry. How did technology play a role in the recording process? Buble: ... I tried to make it very organic, to record off the floor, to mic it in a way you could really capture the essence of what I do live, the energy of what I do live. ... Of course we used machines and Pro Tools, and there were parts of it where I tuned my voice up and all that stuff. I mean, I’m going to take

advantage as much as I can, of course, of technology as much as we could. (But) we tried to make this record feel good as opposed to sounding good, and for me, that’s a huge step forward personally. AP: Do you find covering songs easier or harder to do compared to creating your own music? Buble: It’s far more difficult for me to cover a song because you can compare that song with another 400, iconic artists who have recorded it. So it’s my job to take it to a different place. And as an interpreter, I take it really seriously. When I’m remaking a song, I’m aware that I’m not here to sing the song better than Frank (Sinatra) or if I cover Van Morrison or I cover the Eagles, my job isn’t to sing it better, my job is to make it my own. AP: You mentioned that you used to sleep with your bible every night, hoping to become a singer. Talk about that. Buble: As I get older I have a different concept of what God is to me and — it’s not that I’m into organized religion — the truth is that I don’t know. I’m sorry if that offends people out there, but I’m just being honest, I don’t know. So instead of making it about a certain God, I have a relationship with that one thing. The universe. God. You can call it Jesus, you can call it Jehovah. You can call it whatever you want. Buddha if you want. Whatever. When I was a kid I definitely put it out there to the universe and to my God and I prayed that it would happen and it’s obvious that it worked. AP: What’s the message you’re trying to send with the new CD? Buble: I think the message is that all of us can relate to this feeling, this emotion called love and it’s a complicated feeling. It doesn’t just come with butterflies in the stomach and happiness and sunshine and lollipops, it comes with heartache and jealousy and sometimes rage and sometimes insecurity and sadness and regret. It’s a beautiful, complicated, and really special feeling that keeps us all connected.

LOS ANGELES — Internet power players Google, MySpace and Facebook are adopting strategies to better compete in a music industry that is rapidly shifting online. In separate developments Wednesday, it emerged that Google plans to launch a music search service, MySpace said its music videos will be spread on competing social networks through recent acquisition iLike, and Facebook said it will now allow friends to send each other song-streaming gifts for as little as 10 cents each. The developments, all of which came with the blessing of the major recording companies, are examples of attempts to reap online revenue as compact disc sales continue to fall. According to people familiar with the matter, Google Inc. next week will launch music search pages that will package images of musicians and bands, album artwork, links to news, lyrics, videos and song previews, along with a way to buy songs on one search results page. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly about the deal before Wednesday’s announcement. The package is similar to how companies get individual pages for Google’s financial news service. The effort also marks a new way for Google and the recording companies to promote alternatives to Apple Inc.’s iTunes, the leader in song downloads. Song previews and sales on Google will be provided by online music retailer Lala and iLike, a music recommendation application bought by News Corp.’s MySpace this month. Song previews will appear in Lala or iLike online music players, and users won’t have to navigate away from the search results page. Videos will appear through iLike’s player. The major recording companies — Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group Corp. and EMI Group PLC. — pitched the idea to Google a year ago and are cooperating with the project, according to one person. The music companies will benefit by sharing revenue from song sales with Lala and iLike, while making the discovery, experimentation and buying process simple for Google users. Google hopes to improve itself as a destination for music discovery. Although Google won’t get a share of song sales, it will collect revenue from advertising that will be shown with the search results, according to the people familiar with the plans. A Google spokesman declined to comment. Meanwhile, MySpace announced it is replacing YouTube videos on its iLike music recommendation service, which it bought for $20 million earlier this month, with videos it has licensed on its own.

magically blends keyboards with singer Ben Nichols’ textured guitar work and whiskeyscarred voice. Other fun entries include “Sixes and Sevens,” with its sly chorus (“I’ve been drinking women and chasing whiskey”) and backup singers, and “The Devil and Maggie Chascarillo.” The music doesn’t have the emotional depth of the band’s earlier work, which often reached for and achieved the status of high art. But Nichols is always on his game with tales of heartbreak, loneliness and joy. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: For a band that’s made its name with up-tempo barnburners, few singers can spin a slow, emotional song like Nichols. “Mom,” the closer, is stripped down and raw, one of the few tracks that harkens back to the band’s early work (highlighted exquisitely on “The Attic Tapes”). — Chris Talbott, Associated Press

‘New Moon’ soundtrack features big rock names Various Artists The Twilight Saga: New Moon Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Given the multiplatinum, across-theboard smash success of the first Twilight soundtrack, which boosted the careers of Paramore and Muse to new heights, many questioned whether the second installment could escape being overcome by the music industry’s primal desire to sink its fangs into teenagers’ wallets. Spoiler alert: It does. The Twilight Saga: New Moon (Chop Shop/Atlantic) is a rare soundtrack that both avoids the usual need for alreadyfamiliar songs and the cost-cutting desire to pad out the album with no-name filler. From start to finish, New Moon is packed with interesting, left-of-center rock that will likely fit well with the upcoming movie. In keeping with the movie’s theme, no one really rocks out on New Moon, though Death Cab for Cutie’s trembling, Radiohead-tinged “Meet Me on the Equinox” comes close. Muse’s remix of “I Belong to You” is understated, and the Killers’

pretty “White Demon Love Song” is remarkably subdued. Even the usually bombastic OK Go — yes, the treadmillvideo guys — turn in a lovely jangling ballad, “Shooting the Moon,” while the normally in-your-face Black Rebel Motorcycle Club lays off the throttle on the acoustic “Done All Wrong.” While indie rockers will flip over Grizzly Bear’s haunting “Slow Life” and the spare Bon Iver and St. Vincent duet “Roslyn,” the album’s biggest surprises are Lykke Li’s gorgeous, spare ballad “Possibility” and Thom Yorke’s lower-register, electro-leaning “Hearing Damage.” Of course, those surprise successes really are trumped by music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas’ ability to keep the music industry vampires at bay. — Glenn Gamboa, Newsday

Kiss delivers more ‘Boom’ for the buck Kiss Sonic Boom

Sonic Boom, the first Kiss studio album in 11 years, is one of the best hard rock albums of 2009. But what keeps it from being truly great is the massive musical identify theft by guitarist Tommy Thayer. Since being promoted from traveling assistant to Ace Frehley’s replacement in 2003, Thayer has worn Frehley’s makeup and costume, copied his solos note for note — including his extended concert solo — and even briefly sang Frehley’s signature tune, “Shock Me,” to the dismay of longtime Kiss fans. So surely on his first studio session, Thayer would put his stamp on the band, recording his own solos in his own style. Right? Wrong. On song after song, Thayer lifts key parts of classic Frehley solos rather than creating his own, and the theft is immediately recognizable. On “Russian Roulette,” he steals from Frehley’s solo on “Rock and Roll All Nite.” On “Yes I Know (Nobody’s Perfect),” he takes from “Rock and Roll All Nite” and “See You in Your Dreams.” On “Hot and Cold,” Thayer lifts a Frehley solo bend from “Trouble Walkin’,” and on “All for the Glory,” he cops the heart of Frehley’s “Parasite” solo. Paul Stanley, who produced the album, shines on “Modern Day Delilah,” the epic “Stand” and the anthem-in-waiting “Say

Yeah,” with its shout-itout-loud chorus. Gene Simmons has his moment of modesty on “Nobody’s Perfect,” with the followup line, “but baby I come awfully close.” Drummer Eric Singer wears predecessor Peter Criss’ catman costume and makeup. But Singer earned his whiskers through his 1992-96 tenure in Kiss during the unmasked era. More important, he brings his own style to classic Kiss songs. Sonic Boom also includes a second disc of Kiss classics rerecorded with the current lineup, and tracks like “Calling Dr. Love” and “Heaven’s on Fire” have never sounded as fresh and raw. There’s even a bonus DVD of an April 2009 concert in Argentina. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: Thayer makes his vocal debut on “When Lightning Strikes,” one of the best tracks on the album and his lone moment of true creation. Yet even here, on what should be his signature statement song, Thayer can’t help himself, copping the heart of Frehley’s memorable solo on “Love ’em and Leave ’em.” — Wayne Parry, Associated Press

Tim McGraw’s CD full of sad, morbid tunes Tim McGraw Southern Voice

Someone please give Tim McGraw a hug. Though the twangin’ teaser single “It’s a Business Doing Pleasure With You” and the good-timin’ title track suggest otherwise, McGraw’s new album, Southern Voice (Curb), is overflowing with tearjerkers and meditations on death and dying. Between the helpless “I’m Only Jesus” and the morbid “If I Died Today,” the body count here

gets pretty high, even though McGraw handled it all far better with “Live Like You Were Dying.” Perhaps he needs to find the safe harbor he sings of in the Rascal Flatts-ish “Still” and lighten up a bit. — Glenn Gamboa, Newsday

Lucero waited three years to give us something new, and boy did it ever. Four years removed from producing one of the decade’s best country albums, Nobody’s Darlings, Lucero has remade itself into something very different. 1372 Overton Park, the band’s majorlabel debut, is a surrender without terms to the Memphis sound, complete with horns and backup singers. The album, named for the space where members lived during the band’s formative years, is painted with bright colors and big, complex sounds, completing Lucero’s slow crawl away from alt-country that began with its 2006 release, Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers. These 12 songs, propelled by Memphis session player Jim Spake’s energetic horn arrangements, will blend in smoothly with Lucero’s incendiary live show. The album fits in neatly with today’s wave of bands looking for inspiration in Bruce Springsteen and is reminiscent of recent radio-ready work by The Hold Steady and other Boss devotees. The perfect example here is opener “Smoke,” an anthemic party song that

By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — The animated Astro Boy is a shiny hodgepodge of Pinocchio, WALL-E, Oliver Twist, Gladiator and Superman, with some obvious visual touches taken from The Iron Giant. As its own entity, though, it’s pretty forgettable. Director David Bowers (Flushed Away), who cowrote the script with Timothy Hyde Harris (Kindergarten Cop, Space Jam), gets some help from a lively voice cast that includes Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell, Bill Nighy and Nathan Lane, and the Art Deco look of the film’s architecture has a classic appeal. But it almost feels like there are too many movies competing simultaneously in what is essentially a pretty standard tale of good versus evil. The jokes aren’t all that funny and the father-son relationship between Astro Boy (Highmore) and brilliant scientist Dr. Tenma (a typically lethargic and curiously cast Nicolas Cage) isn’t all that moving. There’s a lot going on, but none of it ever really grabs you. (Along those same innocuous lines, the movie is sufficiently bright and colorful for kids of all ages without ever being too scary.) Based on the Japanese comic book from Osamu Tezuka that began in 1951 — and influenced the anime genre as we know it today — Astro Boy traces the origin

of a young superhero. He began life as a regular kid named Toby, but after dying in a freak lab accident, his father brings him back to life as a robot containing Toby’s personality, memories and Bob’s Big Boy looks (as well as some tricky gadgets and powers that are never explained). Once Dr. Tenma realizes — duh — that this eagerto-please robot version of his child is nonetheless inferior and sends him away, Toby flees the floating, gleaming Metro City and lands back on the nowtrashed Earth below, where he becomes known as Astro Boy. There, he meets other orphaned children who grubbily root around for spare robot parts to bring back to their Fagin-like father figure, Hamegg (Lane). (The trash can that follows them around and looks like a pug is pretty darn cute, though.) Astro wants to fit in with the others, namely the street-smart Cora (Bell), and forge some sort of normal life. But high among the clouds in Metro City, President Stone (Donald Sutherland) is after him for his Blue Core: a powerful crystalline nugget that Dr. Tenma implanted in his chest. You see, there’s a Blue Core and a Red Core. The blue one provides a peaceful, benevolent strength, while the red one turns you into a ferocious killing machine. The Dick Cheney-like president wants to control them both for his ironically named “Peacekeeper,” a burly device intended to dominate Earth: “I’ve got an election to win and I need my robot to be a fighter, not a lover,” he says early on. Yeah, it’s not a terribly subtle political metaphor. And so the obvious inevitably arrives: Astro Boy must return to his home to fight the ultimate fight and face his ultimate destiny. He also might run into his dad again. You never know.

The teen neck-biter sweepstakes gains a new entrant with The Vampire’s Assistant, a distillation of several titles from the popular British Cirque du Freak series. It isn’t really much, beyond a wry tone and a few earned laughs. As usual, the fantasy form is used for a sneak psychology lesson. Darren Shan (Chris Massoglia) lives a tidy little life in a tidy little town. In other words, he’s half dead already. His parents have his “happy, productive” future all planned out. Delinquent pal Steve (Josh Hutcherson, Bridge to Terabithia) points out adventures off the straight and narrow path. When they attend a shady freak show, Darren is awestruck: These are his people. In short order he’s traveling with the show. He apprentices with slick, hammy bloodsucker Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly), falls for a cutie with a prehensile tail, and becomes a player in a war between rival factions of undead. The film shuffles together episodes from the first three volumes of the 12-book Cirque saga, which may explain its rushed, patchy feel. It unfurls like a series of skits. Director Paul Weitz (In Good Company) films the carnival kitsch in poshly lurid color and gives his performers permission to camp it up. The Vampire’s Assistant brims with youth-specific motifs: fractured friendships, disenchantment, agonizing over choices, first love, travel. They don’t fit smoothly into a vampire story but you can see what was intended. Massoglia gives a warm, likable performance as Darren; he suggests a young John Krasinski. Salma Hayek, inhumanly voluptuous and whiskered like a desert prophet, plays the Cirque’s bearded lady; Ken Watanabe is somehow 9 feet tall as the colossal owner, and gaunt Willem Dafoe sports a gigolo’s mustache as an elder vampire. Weitz can’t get the jumble into coherent form. He’s a good comedy director, but this spook show suffers from the kind of pacing that demands a laugh track.

Earhart tale circles, never lands amelia H H Rating: PG for some sensuality, language, thematic elements and smoking Running time: 1:51 STARRING: Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor

By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Considering the risks Amelia Earhart took, losing her life in the call of aviation, Hilary Swank and director Mira Nair don’t put much on the line in their film biography Amelia. Swank and Nair play it safe to the point of benumbing this woman’s life, leaving Earhart as remote and muted as she is in the black-andwhite photos and news footage of the aviator included at the film’s end. Amelia is a biopic on autopilot. We get the facts of Earhart’s pioneering achievements, her marriage to her promoter (Richard Gere), her fling with a fellow pilot (Ewan McGregor). And we get pretty pictures of airplanes in flight. But this dowdy movie rarely embodies Earhart’s passions, whether for flying or for the men in her life. Swank’s Earhart repeatedly tells people how she has to fly or die. Yet when she’s in the air, she’s as stiff and closed-off as a passenger stuck in a middle coach seat on a trans-Atlantic flight. Much of the fault lies in the screenplay by Ron Bass and Anna Hamilton Phelan, a script remarkably based on not one, but two Earhart biographies. That should have given the filmmakers a surfeit of material. Instead, Amelia plays like a Cliffs Notes summation of Earhart’s life, the dialogue ranging from languid to soporific, the majesty of her

moments in flight trivialized by empty voiceovers from Swank — “Flying lets me move in three dimensions,” “Who wants a life imprisoned in safety?” In stumbling, choppy fashion, the movie intercuts between Earhart’s doomed last flight around the world in 1937 and the achievements leading up to it over the previous decade — her Atlantic and Pacific crossings, her mentoring of female flyers, her efforts to establish regional passenger shuttle service. Lovely aerial images, lush landscapes and rich sets and costumes are the film’s lone strengths. In almost every other regard, Amelia veers off course. All the other components for an engaging chronicle are there. A grand life that ends in tragedy and epic mystery. Period drama that offers the chance to craft glorious images and play puppetmaster for fascinating characters. A filmmaker in Nair (Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Masala) who has a keen feel for bold women and zestful lives. A sturdy supporting cast that includes Christopher Eccleston, as the navigator who disappeared with Earhart on her final flight over the Pacific, and Cherry Jones, who briefly enlivens the film as Eleanor Roosevelt on a night flight with Earhart. Amelia flirts with potentially interesting aspects of Earhart’s story — a torn conscience over her personal success during the Depression, the frivolity endured as a spokesmodel for luggage, cameras, even waffle irons to help finance her flying pursuits. Sadly, these moments are tossed in to no purpose, like stuffy airport layovers in really interesting destinations you wish you had the time to go out and explore.

coming to dvd oct. 27 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs This is the third and barelymore-than-middling-funny installment in the series of animated features about the prehistoric adventures of Manny (voice of Ray Romano), Diego (Denis Leary) and Sid (John Leguizamo), a woolly mammoth, saber-toothed tiger and ground sloth stuck in a snowbound world. Simon Pegg makes a nice acerbic addition to the cast as Buck, a one-eyed weasel who carries a sharpened dino tooth for a dagger and acts as a guide when our heroes discover a tropical world of dinosaurs under all that ice. But the movie feels manufactured, a product not of evolution — or even intelligent design — but of cynical, soulless opportunism. Contains cartoon violence and toilet humor.

Il Divo This Godfather-ish drama about Italy’s big Mafia trials of the 1990s won a jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival last year. This must have been a communist jury that enjoys reading its movies. It’s not just the subtitles, it’s the endless cascade of names and events printed on screen, the blur of people and events that swirl around the inscrutable “villain” at the heart of the drama — Giulio Andreotti, capo di capi of the Italian Christian Democratic Party, played as an inscrutable, gnome-shaped sphinx by Toni Servillo. Il Divo is like watching a cricket match. You don’t know the players, the rules or the history of the nation that invented it. But it’s all here for you in one confusing parade. Contains violence. — The Washington Post

The Obamas are big on White House gigs news

By NANCY BENAC Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Michelle and Barack Obama sat one table over from J. Lo and Marc Anthony, and all four of them were rocking in their seats as Sheila E. shook the house — well, really the tent. The latest installment of the White House music series was too big for the East Room, so a high-wattage assortment of Latin musicians sent pulsating, can’t-help-but-bobalong rhythms tumbling out of a giant tent on the mansion’s South Lawn. As it happens, music of all sorts — rock, jazz, country, classical — has been busting out of the White House all year long. Presidents have long used the White House as a platform to showcase the best of music and the arts: Chester Arthur staged the first formal East Room concert in the late 1800s. But the Obamas are demonstrating a commitment to use the White House to promote the arts in a huge way. And they’re not just tapping safe, living legends: Fresh faces like bachata band Aventura and Mexican pop sensation Thalia (who lured Obama on to the dance floor briefly) shared a stage with gray eminence Jose Feliciano at last week’s Fiesta Latina. The Obamas’ musical push started on Day One, when the Wynton Marsalis Quintet played for a private inaugural celebration party of 100 at the White House. A month later, the White House brought in Earth, Wind and Fire to entertain visiting governors. And days later, the Obamas hosted an East Room tribute to Stevie Wonder that featured Tony Bennett, Martina McBride and Wonder himself. The president called it “the most accomplished Stevie Wonder cover band in history.” Since then, the lineup has zigzagged all over the musical spectrum. The first installment of the Obamas’ ongoing White House music series was a June day devoted to jazz that

President Barack Obama, center seated facing the stage, watches from left, Shelia E., Gloria Estefan, and Jose Feliciano perform during the ‘Fiesta Latina’ on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington on Oct. 13. included daytime workshops for 150 young musicians and an evening concert headlined by Paquito D’Rivera. That was when Michelle Obama let it be known she wants her daughters, Malia and Sasha, to be “aware of all kinds of music — other than hip-hop.” In July, self-proclaimed “city boy” Barack Obama presided over an evening of country music that brought together Alison Krauss and Union Station, Brad Paisley and veteran Charley Pride. Joe Reinstein, the deputy social secretary who coordinates the White House music series, said the Obamas made it clear early on that they wanted to use their new home as a platform for the “best and the brightest that America has to offer.” But he said the first couple has taken a hands-off approach when it comes to picking specific genres and artists.

“We knew that they loved jazz, so that was an easy one to start with,” says Reinstein, whose musical background is limited to playing in the band as a kid and being an appreciative listener. “Now, we’re trying to move through as many genres of music as we can and keep going.” Next up: classical music in November. And beyond that, the White House is exploring events to feature opera, dance and perhaps film. Reinstein says it’s a winwin deal when he calls artists with an invitation to perform at the White House. “I am so excited to be talking to them, but they’re just as excited to get a call from the White House,” he said. “I’m giddy; they’re giddy.” Some eager artists don’t even wait for an invitation. They volunteer. “My inbox is full of a lot of the talent that America has to offer,” says Reinstein.

Past performers say that playing at the White House carries with it a special significance, even if the audience is relatively small. And because many of the White House musical events are televised — Fiesta Latina,

for example, is airing on PBS, Telemundo and V-me — the exposure gets magnified exponentially. Aventura lead singer Romeo Santos said in an interview that there couldn’t have been a better way to launch the group’s new U.S. tour, adding that he thought his manager was joking when he said the White House had called. “It’s really powerful,” Santos said. “What it does for Latino music is it gives it a mainstream respect.” At an afternoon soundcheck for Fiesta Latina on a sunny day on the back lawn of the White House, Los Lobos singer-songwriter David Hidalgo spoke quietly about the impact of the White House spotlight. “A lot of times minorities get treated like second-class citizens,” he said. “It doesn’t feel that way today.” Musicologist Elise Kirk, author of a book about the history of music at the White House, wrote that the groups featured there over the years have “tended to be more conservative than innovative, more reflective than prophetic.” But there have been notable exceptions, and plenty of unexpected moments. Theodore Roosevelt’s White House showcased American music, chamber music and the modern French and Russian schools “at a time when these styles were barely recognized in this country,”

MELANCHOLY BALLAD The first East Room concert for an invited audience took place on Feb. 23, 1883, when Chester Arthur had more than 100 guests hear members of Her Majesty’s Opera Company sing Mozart, Verdi and Wagner. The star of the evening was famed Canadian soprano Emma Albani, who sang “Robin Adair” as her final selection. The song had special meaning for Arthur, whose late wife Ellen had sung the Irish ballad many times at Arthur’s request.

THE LION SHINES Theodore Roosevelt’s White House was the first to feature a Steinway piano, and great pianists soon followed. Ignacy Jan Paderewski’s first appearance at the White House in April 1902 was recounted by portrait painter Cecilia Beaux, who wrote: “The yellow head of the Lion shone gloriously against the satin of the Blue Room. ... I think it may have been better than hearing Chopin himself.” Paderewski described the president’s reaction: “The president listened with charming interest and applauded vociferously and always shouted out ‘Bravo! Bravo! Fine! Splendid!’ — even during the performance.”

NO THANKS Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt brought in professional dancers to the White House for the first time. They featured black vocal artists, the first staged opera, women’s organizations, ethnic groups and an array of American folk singers and players never before seen in the mansion. Offers to per-

form in the Roosevelt White House came in at the rate of 250 a season during the 1930s. Some who never made it: a young man who demonstrated the “Theremin Wave — a scientific musical mystery,” a woman who played the piano wearing mittens, and an 18month-old baby who directed music in perfect time.

SONG OF AN EXILE Famed Spanish cellist Pablo Casals played in Theodore Roosevelt’s White House in 1904, but he stopped making American appearances in 1938 because the United States had recognized the Franco dictatorship. Casals lived in exile, vowing not to return to Spain until democracy was restored. When President John Kennedy sent him a letter inviting him to play for a November 1961 state dinner, Casals accepted because of his admiration for the president. The hour-long concert was serious, featuring works by Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, and Francois

Couperin, and closed with a powerful encore. “You might know this song,” Casals said, almost weeping. “It’s a Catalan folk song, ‘The Song of the Birds’ — but to me, it’s the song of the exile.”

news

Kirk recounts. When Carol Feraci performed at the Nixon White House, she shocked the audience by unfurling a blue banner that read “Stop the Killing,” as a protest against the war in Vietnam. The Kennedy administration, in particular, was known for putting a huge focus on the arts. “My main concern,” Jacqueline Kennedy told Kirk, “was to present the best in the arts, not necessarily what was popular at the time.”

KENNEDY’S CUES Kennedy was caught more than once clapping at the wrong time during classical numbers, and sometimes was uncertain when a concert was finally over. Social secretary Letitia Baldrige worked out a secret signal to cue him on when to clap. “As the last piece was almost finished, I was to open the central door of the East Room from the outside about two inches — enough for him to glimpse the prominent Baldrige nose structure in the crack. It worked beautifully that night and for all future concerts,” Baldrige said.

In June 1978, the White House hosted a jazz concert on the South Lawn in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival. The concert featured nine decades of jazz performers, including 95-year-old Eubie

Blake, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz and others. Carter, sitting on the lawn in his shirt sleeves, asked Gillespie to play “Salt Peanuts” and joined in with repeated chants of “salt peanuts” in the breaks.

The Internet: For better or for worse There’s also a subplot involving the kidnapping of a pizza delivery boy, but you didn’t really need to know that. Why am I telling you all this? I think the episode illustrates how some things about doing good business don’t change. Transparency, candor (with a little charm) and hard work; it beats Twitter and Facebook. I don’t care about whether someone knows how to put together a coherent status update. I like someone who puts their back into it, someone who can give it to me straight. That’s what sh … well, anyway. The companies that have a successful Web presence didn’t get there by poorly imitating everyone else. They offered a product no one else had. (And, by the way, I think the jury is really still out on whether anyone’s made much money off any of this social networking stuff.) Dunder Mifflin tried to be like everyone else, creating a problematic, inferior product that no one could relate to in the process.

Exciting things on the horizon “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2”: Wow, has it really been two years since “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare”? I am getting old. What am I talking about? “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2,” fools. It drops on Nov. 10, just in time for relentless holiday play. Developer Infinity Ward is back at the helm in what’s sure to be a crowd pleaser. Games like this make writing a video game column incredibly difficult. I know I’m supposed to try all of these other games out there but the first “Modern Warfare” was so hard to put down. And I wasn’t even any good at it. It was just that much fun. So get ready for a column or three about the sequel, and to those not interested, I apologize in advance. I’ve seen the trailers and this thing looks awesome.

Technology

I’m addicted to Netflix, and, more specifically, past seasons of The Office available for instant viewing on Netflix. Lately I’ve been contemplating an episode of Season 4 titled “Launch Party.” Dunder Mifflin, the fictional company featured in the show, launches a new Dan Web site Whisenhunt that will Pushing Buttons bridge the gap between the paper-selling firm and big-box retailers like Staples. Employees are made to bow and curtsey before the new, shiny piece of technology while Ryan, the supervisor to office manager Michael Scott and conceiver of the Web site, sings its praises. The paper salesmen feel belittled by the new toy that’s come to replace them. Dwight, a salesman, gets into a John Henry-esque slug fest with the new Web site, saying he can sell more paper directly in one day than the company can sell online. And he succeeds, but he ultimately fails to win the affections of his ex-girlfriend and co-worker Angela. The episode deals with the latest threat to American companies: How to compete in an online world that’s outsmarting them every second. It isn’t just about having a good Web site anymore. Dunder Mifflin’s new site also has a social networking feature, mimicking other successful models like Facebook and MySpace. (Naturally, it isn’t long before the social network is overrun with sexual deviants.) Eventually Michael stomps all over Ryan’s launch party by boasting, on a Web cam to other Dunder Mifflin branches participating in the launch party, that Dwight beat the machine. (This ingratiates him to other Dunder Mifflin executives who hate Ryan.)

A scene from ‘Borderlands.’

‘Borderlands’ a blast for shooter, RPG fans By LOU KESTEN Associated Press

Like most video gamers, I’ve wielded enough virtual weapons to equip a small army. We all have favorites, from the classic BFG-9000 in “Doom” to the chainsawequipped assault rifle in “Gears of War” to the awesome RYNO (“Rip You a New One”) in “Ratchet & Clank.” “Borderlands” (2K Games, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99) is dedicated to aficionados of fantastic weaponry. Developer Gearbox Software says the game has “bazillions” of guns, thanks to a random content generator that mixes and matches parts, ammunition and enhancements, like bullets that also set their targets on fire. Whether you find all bazillion (actually, more than 17 million at last estimate), guns are everywhere in “Borderlands.” You have pistols, revolvers, shotguns, machine guns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers and even some exotic alien ordnance. And you will need all of it on the desolate planet of Pandora, home of the galaxy’s deadliest beasts, bandits and mutants. “Borderlands” feels like a sci-fi version of the classic fantasy role-playing game “Diablo.” Their goals are the same: Kill everything, steal their weapons and loot, upgrade your weapons and kill bigger things. The major difference is that this is a first-person shooter, so you get a little “Halo” mixed into your “Diablo.” It’s an addictive formula, one that keeps nudging you to explore new areas and discover new powers.

It’s also reminiscent of last year’s “Fallout 3,” which also took place in a blasted, lawless, mutant-filled landscape. But “Fallout 3” thrived on a brilliant story, filled with memorable encounters with distinctive characters. The story in “Borderlands” is so thin, you often forget it’s there, and the only interesting characters are the ones you meet in the introductory movie. You play as one of those characters. There’s Brick, a brawler who’s good with his fists; Roland, a heavy weapons expert; Mordecai, a marksman; and Lilith, who specializes in incendiary, shock and corrosive weapons. Each character also has a special power — Lilith, for example, can become invisible. You’ll probably concentrate on beefing up one character if you’re playing solo, but the real fun starts in cooperative action, when you can get all four mercenaries fighting at once. The large-scale battle zones become much more manageable with three friends helping. The eye-catching, cel-shaded graphics in “Borderlands” give it a more cartoonish look than most first-person shooters. And the soundtrack has a slight country twang reminiscent of the sci-fi TV series “Firefly.” The team at Gearbox has done a fine job of merging shooter and role-playing mechanics, and fans of both genres will enjoy the ride. Even people who are spooked by guns will be drawn into the search for new tools of destruction. Three stars out of four.

Talladega’s Ritz theater presents ‘The Lady With All the Answers’

Alabama author to speak at Houston Cole Library

by Erica Long Special to The Star

Dear readers, where might you go to find a piece of comical entertainment this weekend? How about at the historic Ritz Theatre in Talladega as Dolores Hydock stars in The Lady with All the Answers, a one-woman play about the life of columnist Ann Landers. “Ann Landers is a very sharp and sassy woman that just accidently fell into the advice column business,” Hydock said. The play takes place in 1975, as Landers struggles as she writes a column that becomes the most famous during her career. “She tackles tough issues, gun control, Vietnam,” Hydock said. “She is one of the first people to make it OK for ordinary everyday people to seek counseling.” When asked about how she came about the role, Hydock said she was working with director Carl Stewart at Terrific New Theatre, and he located this piece and suggested it to her. “It’s fun, it’s interesting, there are very touching moments,” she said. “This is a woman that talked to Lyndon Johnson — she was a very powerful figure back when women weren’t looked at as powerful figures.” Hydock has performed for sold-out shows in Birmingham and New York and will perform two shows this weekend in Talladega. “Dolores Hydock is one of Alabama’s most popular and talented actresses, and we’re thrilled that she can bring this delightful and touching show to the Ritz,” said Tom Wofford, executive director at the theater. The audience will get a chance to interact with Hydock as Landers talks about some of the issues she gets letters about. Although the audience will find this play comical and entertaining, “it’s not one I would bring children under 16 to,” Hydock said. Performances are Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling 315-0000 or online at www.talladegaritz.com. Erica Long is a freelance writer in Oxford.

These days, authors are under lots of pressure from publishers and critics. If readers liked the author’s initial book, publishers say, then the readers want more of the same in the future. But some established writers want to explore Hervey new genres. Folsom Yet they still Artists in Action want their work to sell. What’s an author to do? One man’s answer to the problem should come across Monday at 7 p.m. at Houston Cole Library on the campus of Jacksonville State University, when Alabama author Frank Turner Hollon will speak about his latest book, Austin & Emily. He will also read from his novel Life is a Strange Place. When Hollon, who lives in Fairhope, published his first novel, The Pains of April, in 1999, he captured the interest of Jacksonville State University English professor Steven Whitton, who has reviewed most of the author’s works for The Anniston Star. “Hollon is remarkable,” Whitton said. “He keeps surprising us each time with his books, showing more maturity with each title about the different isolations humans all face.” Earlier in Hollon’s career Whitton joked with the writer about his being “one of the best-kept secrets in Alabama.” Now Hollon’s talent is no secret. His readership has built up, especially after The God File, published in 2002, won Fiction Book of the Year by the Independent Publisher Book Awards. Even so, Hollon says he’s content to remain a secret in Alabama in the publishing echelon. He is not interested in climbing the literary ladder, for his law practice and family are his staples. “My first novels were intense and philosophical,” he said. “I hope all I write will be that, and

proving they can still get into mischief at their age. Whitton marvels at Hollon’s insight, then and now. “I had to keep reminding myself that this was a young man writing this story,” he said. “Clearly, he knows people well.” Hollon’s life gives him opportunity to know people well. He is prosecutor for the towns of Gulf Shores and Foley. His 2007 psychological mystery, Blood and Circumstance, is about what appears to be a mercy killing and is told entirely through the accused murderer’s pre-trial interview sessions with a psychologist. With law practice and family keeping him busy enough, Hollon wants to keep his writing an art form instead of a business. “I hope people can use my work to see the problems that connect us all — fear of dying, love — through different eyes,” he said. The presentation is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the author’s talk. Special to The Star

Alabama author Frank Turner Hollon will speak about his latest novel, ‘Austin & Emily,’ Monday at Jacksonville State University’s Houston Cole Library. my pages will touch readers in a profound way. But I want my books to be reflective of our different worlds. I want to branch out.” So while his earlier novels are serious, his later ones are amusing. Life is a Strange Place, published in 2003, is crazy to some people, Hollon said, but has its points. He hopes the movie version of the novel will be accepted into the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. Then he looks forward to its distribution to a national audience. Hollon and his three children wrote the children’s book Glitter Girl and the Crazy Cheese, published in 2006. It was fun to write with the children’s input because “normally, writing is a solitary thing,” Hollon said.

Hollon writes fiction, using seeds of truth from his life to shape the plots. A friend who worked in a nursing home while he was a student at Tulane Law School sparked the idea for The Pains of April. Now his legal practice, involving juvenile and family law, contributes to his belief that readers make assumptions about people that aren’t always correct. “We think we know people. But, actually, we just know about them,” he said. The Pains of April is a diary about the seasons of a man’s life. The man Hollon portrays leads an active life in the nursing home, at least in his interactions with people, and the book ends with hopeful thoughts. Three men sneak out to a tattoo parlor and go fishing, proudly

Art at The Victoria There’s art to dine by at The Victoria Inn, thanks to the Jacksonville State University’s art department’s loan of a wood assemblage, paintings and photos, all of which enhance the walls and dark wood of the adjoining dining rooms where contemporary Southern cuisine is served. The art is by Jauneth Skinner, Marvin Shaw, Ron Baker, Diana Cadwallader, Anita Stewart and Allison McElroy. A different display will be featured in a few months. Alan Martin, chef, and his wife Melanie are art collectors. Their long, vertical, threepiece series on ornate silver cutlery has a special message to visitors, too. “These images say ‘It’s time to eat,’” Martin said. “But they mean elegance, too.” The Victoria Inn restaurant is open for dinner Tuesdays through Thursdays from 5:309:30 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30-10 p.m.

Julie Bowen: Mother of three times two, on TV and in actuality By David Hiltbrand The Philadelphia Inquirer

Julie Bowen apologizes for conducting an interview from Los Angeles on her car phone. “This is pretty much the only time I can call,” the actress says. At the moment, she’s driving from home, where she is the mother of three, to her job on the season’s breakout comedy, ABC’s Modern Family, on which she plays the mother of three. So, yeah, she’s got her hands full. “The real-life parenting thing is tough,” says Bowen, 39, now the mother of three sons under 3 after giving birth to twins this year. Her pregnancy necessitated concealing a double baby bump when she was first working on Modern Family, the insouciant, critically hailed sitcom that is averaging more than 10 million viewers a week. Camouflaged or not, Bowen brings the same extra-sparkly girl-next-door quality to her new show that she has been displaying on TV since starring opposite Tom Cavanagh in 2000 on Ed. From that series, she went on to Boston Legal while appearing in recurring roles on such shows as ER, Weeds and Lost. How has she managed to be on the tube more than Billy Mays over the last decade? She cites her obliging spirit. “I’m happy to read for roles and I’ll jump through hoops for producers and directors so they know it’s OK to hire me,” she says. “A lot of people reach a point

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, left, and Julie Bowen appear in an episode of ‘Modern Family,’ airing Nov. 4, on the ABC television network. in their careers where they don’t feel comfortable auditioning anymore. Not me.” Bowen, adept at comedy and drama, uses a little bit of both on Modern Family. As Claire, she acts primarily as the anchor to Phil (Ty Burrell), her flighty, desperateto-be-hip husband. Addressing his scenesnatching character, Burrell says, “None of my idiocy would land if it wasn’t for her being so grounded. The bonus with Julie is she is incredibly funny.” A Baltimore native born Julie Luetkemeyer, Bowen broke into TV work with small roles on soap operas. Despite her many highprofile acting credits since,

Bowen is still often identified for her role as Adam Sandler’s girlfriend in the 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore, one of those fluky films you can find on one cable channel or another at any hour of the day or night. “It was my first movie,” she says. “I let the lovely hair people bully me into this crazy helmet of Princess Di hair. Had I known (the film) would live forever on cable, I would have fought for better hair.” Bowen is one of those rare TV actresses who will confess to being a fan of the medium. In addition to Lost, she identifies So You Think You Can Dance, The Colbert Report, Hung and Mad Men as her current favorites.

Sarah Palin to be guest on ‘Oprah’ By Roger Catlin The Hartford Courant

Sarah Palin will sit with Oprah Winfrey next month for the first interview from the former Alaska governor since she stepped down from office. Palin will appear in part to promote her book, Going Rogue: An American Life, which will be released that week. It is so far the only interview announced this fall for the former vice presidential candidate,

and it will be her first time on Oprah. Although Winfrey has been known to nail down some big interviews on her popular daytime show, the most newsmaking sessions have usually been along the lines of entertainment figures such as Tom Cruise or Whitney Houston. There are no plans for Palin to appear on Late Show With David Letterman where a recurring comedy bit has been “Things More Fun Than Reading the Sarah Palin Memoir” (No. 61, getting run over by a lawn mower; No. 14, driving into a tree; No. 45, walking into traffic).

LOS ANGELES — The punch lines are flowing on the set of Community, and that’s between scenes for NBC’s freshman sitcom about an oddball collection of community college students. Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays divorcee Shirley, is recounting a recent first date that proved less than stellar. “He told me he’s getting out of a relationship. Uh huh,” she said, dryly. “That means you’re still IN a relationship.” Donald Glover, asked whether he had a nickname growing up, shakes his head. “Being a black kid with the name Donald was enough,” says the actor, who co-stars as former football star Troy. And then there’s Chevy Chase, as droll and deadpan during an interview as he was three decades ago delivering the news on Saturday Night Live or in a string of film roles including Caddyshack and Fletch. Does Community summon memories of his Bard College days in New York? “College? No,” Chase says, mischief clearly afoot. “If anything, it brings up my prison stint.” On-camera quips are the work of series creator Dan Harmon and his writing staff, but Harmon knew the actors delivering them would be key. Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Ken Jeong and Danny Pudi co-star as members of a study group at the fictional Greendale school. “Casting was 95 percent of putting the show together,” said Harmon. “This is an ensemble comedy. These are the choices that either make the show or sink it.” So far, critics have given Community high marks while viewers still are discovering it. Community drew 5 million viewers last week compared with 8 million for NBC’s The Office (and more than 14 million for CBS’ Two and a Half Men), but is seeing growth in its advertiser-favored age 18-to-49 audience. Harmon, who worked on Sarah Silverman’s brash Comedy Central show — “funny because it would make your mom blush” — said he’d long dreamed of doing a sitcom with mainstream appeal for NBC’s once-dominant Thursday lineup. Community was inspired by the “emotional punch” of Harmon’s experience at Glendale Community College, north of Los Angeles. Enrolling four years ago at age 32 to study Spanish with his girlfriend, he found himself drawn into the lives of fellow students as he helped them with classwork. In the series, that’s the fate of McHale’s cocky Jeff, a would-be lawyer. The 66-year-old Chase, playing a man made wise by experience, was an unexpected bonus, Harmon said.

Carnie Wilson goes ‘Unstapled’ for reality series Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Carnie Wilson is opening up her life as a working mom in a new reality TV series. Carnie Wilson: Unstapled is in production and set to debut in January on GSN, which also airs The Newlywed Game hosted by Wilson. A singer-songwriter with the pop group Wilson Phillips and daughter of Brian

Wilson of the Beach Boys, the 41-year-old Wilson said she’s comfortable being candid. Her 1999 obesity surgery was shown online. “I’ve written two autobiographies and posed for Playboy. I think I’ve pretty much been out there,” said Wilson. But, she added, “This is definitely the most exposed I’ve ever been.” The reality series, a departure for the network that typically airs new and old game

shows, is the result of viewer response to Wilson, said Kelly Goode, GSN senior vice president for original programming and development. “Carnie is incredibly funny and earthy. ... She’s a personality the viewers have fallen in love with,” Goode said. Her dad may make an appearance on her reality show if his schedule permits, Wilson said. She’s hoping they’ll record together. Wilson, who has a newborn, Luci, and a toddler, Lola, with husband Rob Bonfiglio, said viewers will see her trying to take off about 50 pounds of “baby weight.” Besides her TV shows and music career that includes solo releases, Wilson is a spokeswoman for liteandhope.com, a support site for those suffering from morbid obesity. The Unstapled in the reality show’s title is a play on Wilson’s gastric-bypass surgery, which can involved stomach stapling, a GSN spokeswoman said. Wilson also makes a line of desserts for a Los Angeles area candy shop SweetHarts, owned by actress Melissa Joan Hart. Wilson said that’s a “passion” as much as a business. She likes feeding people, she said. It’s important to her how she and her family are portrayed in the reality series, said Wilson, adding that she trusts GSN and the show’s producer.
