The Donoho School to perform ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at Anniston’s Performing Arts Center By Brett Buckner Special to The Star

passing glance at The Donoho School’s upcoming production of “The Wizard of Oz” and it would be easy to assume director Ashley Burrage was a glutton for punishment. For this show, which opens Friday, May 4, there was no such thing as doing it halfway. It’s all or nothing. The cast of 72 students — running the gamut from munchkins and flying monkeys to the iconic roles of Dorothy and the Wicked Witch — includes nearly onequarter of the school’s entire student body (not to mention a pair of real life Totos), but even then Burrage was forced to turn kids away.

simply meant to be. “It’s a God thing,” she said. “It just seems like it’s all come together to make this happen as one door after another has opened to make this all possible.” First Burrage was able to secure the rights to the show, “which is never easy,” she said. Then came the opportunity to have “The Wizard of Oz” at the Anniston Performing Arts Center and finally the Characters Theater in Gadsden agreed to lend its costumes for the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow for Donoho’s production. “Little by little, it’s all worked out,” Burrage said. “All I can say is that we’re standing in the middle of a miracle.” But miracles don’t come easy

AUSTIN, Texas — For much of his career, M. Ward has recorded his solo albums pretty much the same way. So when it came time to make “A Wasteland Companion,” his first solo album in three years, he wanted to do something very different. The recording sessions took the 38-year-old on a musical journey of sorts. He recorded in eight studios in places like Austin, Texas, Omaha, Neb., New York City and Bristol, England, and each new place brought him in contact with a new list of players, including longtime influences like former Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and British producer John Parish. “I love making music, but making the same songs over and over again would be very boring,” Ward said. “Everyone has their own ways of making what they do for a living exciting, ways of keeping it alive. And for me, it’s collaborations with really talented people.” Ward sat down with The Associated Press on a quiet morning before a busy run at the South By Southwest Music Conference last month to talk about his journeys and working with famous friends. AP: Did your extremely busy schedule require you to record on the road? Ward: Over the last 10 years I’ve (been invited) to these incredible studios all over Europe and America and I never have time to actually do it. So this was the record where I actually made the time to make that happen and sort of just removed my security blanket of recording in the same room all the time. M. Ward ‘s new album ‘A Wasteland Companion’ took him on a musical journey. He recorded in eight different studios for the album. this. I wanted to make a new kind of record that combines live record with studio record out of an experiment. I like the movement and chaos that’s inferred in a live record and the unpredictability of a live record, but I love the luxuries of sound manipulation you get in the studio. So it’s a new kind of record, really. I plan to make a lot more records like this, when I do make more records. Who knows how many more I’ll make. AP: Is there some question you’d make more? Ward: I would assume there would be more, but whenever you make a record you just never know. The world’s going to end, right (laughs)? Who knows? AP: Do you find it hard to make time for your own projects. Are you jealously guarding your solo time? Ward: No, because I’ve

been writing songs since I was 15, so half my life really. With She & Him, that’s a really big part of my time and my life. But Zooey writes the songs for that and we work on cover songs together and I’m just the producer and guitar player. So for my own songs, they all come under the umbrella of this record. Monsters of Folk, we get together once every few years, so my records and She & Him records are the most constant sources of record production. AP: How do these projects come together? Ward: They happen out of a friendship or a love of a batch of songs that need to be recorded. AP: Was there anyone particularly inspiring or who did something that maybe caught you by surprise? Ward: Steve Shelley springs to mind. I’ve loved

Sonic Youth since I was in high school so it was a dream come true to play songs with him in the studio. He’s just an incredible drummer. He has a signature maraca and full drum kit sound that he can do that I’ve never seen anybody do. And then in England, I worked with a guy named John Parrish, who worked with PJ Harvey — incredible drummer, incredible marimba player. I’ve always thought the best live records are the ones where the guitar player is discovering things while he’s playing, and I hope that comes across on the record. AP: Do you ever say, “That doesn’t work?” Ward: Oh, yeah, all the time. I recorded about 24 songs for the record, so I always pick the 12 or 15 that seem to fit together and seem to need repeating, repeated listenings.

Kip Moore, “Up All Night” (MCA Nashville) On his debut album “Up All Night,” country music newcomer Kip Moore manages to fit contemporary country music’s narrow conventions, yet distinguishes himself with a musical vision of his own. Aided by producer Brett James, the Georgia native treads familiar territory, singing about home, faith, trucks, beer, good love and living life on his own terms. Yet he makes these overworked themes engaging by matching his hoarse voice with strippeddown roots-rock and lyrics born of experience rather than clichés. For example, Moore’s first hit, “Something ‘Bout A Truck,” depends on a list of country signifiers, yet Moore’s half-spoken vocals set to a bluesy beat and nasty slide guitar turn it into a sexy story about a memorable day with a special woman. Throughout, the arrangements — bare-bones yet carefully constructed — present simple rhythms accented by biting slide guitar or atmospheric use of steel guitar, giving Moore an intelligent, masculine presence that comes across as genuine rather than calculated. At his best, Moore seems capable of joining the ranks of country stars Dierks Bentley and Eric Church. That’s company few Nashville newcomers attain with introductory albums these days. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: Several current Nashville singers boast about being dangerous rebels, but it comes across as a marketing pose. Moore’s “Reckless (Still Growin’ Up)” is a swaggering rocker and takes chances few other country stars would dare — and earns its rebellious stripes.

Jack White raises the bar on rock ‘n’ roll in ‘Blunderbuss’ By Randall Roberts Los Angeles Times

Jack White, “Blunderbuss” (Third Man) ★ ★ ★ The first line of “Blunderbuss,” the debut solo album by former White Stripes singerguitarist Jack White, arrives with a lyrical punch in the face: “I was in the shower, so I could not tell my nose was bleeding,” he sings. After such a greeting, one can’t help but wonder about the journey ahead. How will the 36-year-old fare over the next 13 songs when he’s already drawn his own blood? Bodily concerns aside, White is a wonderfully creative historian who over the last 15 years has built an expanding empire — and a few distinctive bands — as a means to shine a light on American music. With the Stripes, he and drummer Meg White channeled blues riffs through DIY punk rock energy; as part of the four-man Raconteurs, he helps generate heavy power pop; and with the Dead Weather, he drums as Kills vocalist Alison Mosshart moans the blues. He’s also done production work for, among others, Loretta Lynn, and he runs a record label and store called Third Man. White’s a renaissance man to be sure, but he’s also a purist who fancies basic rock structures and has a general disinterest in music-tech advances and artificial sounds. On “Blunderbuss,” the Detroit-born, Nashville-based White focuses on the pre-computer, post-hippie era of music, circa 1970-75, a style mastered by the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Mott the Hoople, the Who and, most obviously,

Jack White’s first solo album, ‘Blunderbuss,’ was released this week and focuses on post-hippie era of music. the Faces, all of whom started off in the world of aggressive British Invasion rock but stretched out with bigger, heavier sounds as they matured. Just as in the late 1960s when a new generation of axmen stepped in to carry the mantle of early blues guitarists Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, White’s obsession with the music and its history is in service of this tradition. White, along with the Black Keys, has filled a power vacuum that was created when baby boomer blues rockers retired (Jimmy Page), went soft (Rod Stewart), took to the state fair circuit (ZZ Top) or became parodies of themselves (Eric Clapton).

It is a little frustrating, though, that for all that scholarship, all that obvious appreciation and adoration, White’s music gets only as far as 1975 and, in fact, treats the succeeding 37 years as though they never happened. Unlike the Black Keys, whose affection for boundary-busting has led them to collaborate with rappers such as Mos Def and Talib Kweli and work with producer Dangermouse, White’s travels occur more onstage, as he moves from guitar to drums and from blues to power pop. He’s not similarly experimental. Lyrically, though, “Blunderbuss” is a fearless and thrilling mess of thoughts about love and loss and life. After the bloody beginning, things just get weirder. But when he sings on the stunning closer, “Take me with

you when you go,” it’s a rare and revealing moment that penetrates his carefully crafted mystique by alluding to his recent divorce. “Blunderbuss” is, quite simply, a marvelous rock album — one that, along with the Black Keys’ “El Camino” and Gary Clark Jr.’s self-titled teaser EP from a highly anticipated Warner Bros. record, is injecting energy into an ancient art form. In fact, 2012 is shaping up to be a year in which hard electric guitar and compact three-minute rock songs are thriving in the underground through the work of Ty Segall, Hanni el Khatib and the Strange Boys, among hundreds of others. And on “Blunderbuss,” White proves why he’s not only the inheritor of a tradition but also a remarkable, if bloodied, ambassador.

What would Edgar Allan Poe be doing if he were alive today? Clawing at the inside of his coffin, desperate to get at the people who used and abused his ingenious, diabolical tales as the basis for the pile of cinematic bird poo that is “The Raven.” Like carrion feeders themselves, the filmmakers peck and gnash at Poe’s stories to fill out a plot that sounds sort of cool in concept — a serial killer using the author’s fiction as a blueprint for ghastly murders — but is featherheaded in execution. John Cusack makes a terrible Poe, the somber role as one of literature’s great tortured souls spotlighting his limitations as an actor (and perhaps consigning to premature burial the far better casting possibility of Robert Downey Jr. ever getting to play Poe, a part in which he’s been

interested for years; Hollywood’s not likely to resurrect the author again as long as “The Raven” remains freshly fetid in people’s minds). With his little goatee and his black cape, Cusack vaguely looks the part, but he’s a lightweight — voice too whiny, mannerisms too exaggerated, cadence too reedy to bring alive the movie’s frequent passages of Poe’s lyrical writing. Other than some stylishly gothic visuals crafted by director James McTeigue (“V for Vendetta”), “The Raven” is an unimaginative mess whose superficial appropriations of Poe’s devilish yarns are deeply unworthy of the author. An introductory sequence establishes Cusack’s Poe as a garden-variety drunk, scruffy, squabbling, egomaniacal and perpetually penniless. Yet his popular stories of the macabre and his darkly romantic poetry keep him in favor with the ladies

Particularly, with beautiful heiress Emily Hamilton (Alice Eve), whom Poe hopes to marry, over the dead body of her disapproving dad (Brendan Gleeson, always good for some entertaining bluster, even in a perfunctory role here). Screenwriters Hannah Shakespeare and Ben Livingston then pull a “Saw” on Poe, taking that modern torture-porn franchise’s idea of savage gamesmanship by a serial killer and imposing it on poor Edgar. Baltimore police detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans)

enlists Poe to consult on a double homicide after recognizing it as a copycat of the author’s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” Soon, they’re faced with a pile of corpses dispatched in methods borrowed from “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Cask of Amontillado” and other Poe stories, the taunting killer forcing the author to play along to end the slaying spree. “The Raven” reinforces how fiendishly clever Poe was. The premises of his stories still resonate as a source of our modern collective nightmares — and as an endless source for Hollywood to plagiarize in contemporary horror tales. Yet Poe’s stories also highlight how lame a reimagining McTeigue and his collaborators have come up with. Rather than taking Poe’s ideas and running wild, the filmmakers wring nothing more than a few moments of gore from them. They add no sus-

pense or scares to Poe’s images, apply no originality to his plot devices. When “The Raven” finally gets around to revealing its mastermind, the bad guy is like an after-thought, as if the filmmakers suddenly realized they needed to unmask the killer and cast the first mildly menacing actor who walked through the door. “The Raven” offers up one of the dullest mass murderers ever. There are obvious comparisons between “The Raven” and Downey’s “Sherlock Holmes” franchise, which gave a makeover to Arthur Conan Doyle’s great detective. Poe’s mysteries were a precursor to those of Conan Doyle, who perfected the genre. It would be nice if Hollywood could return the favor, if some of the spirit of dumb fun of the new Holmes flicks might rub off on “The Raven.” But it’s just a bore; quoth the raven, “Go see something else.”

Set sail with ‘The Pirates! Band of Misfits’ By Roger Moore McClatchy-Tribune News Service

There’s an inviolable law of animated films — the more “names” you have in the voice cast, the weaker you know your film is. Aardman, those meticulous Brits who build clay models and painstakingly animate them into Wallace & Gromit cartoons and the hit “Chicken Run,” tip their hand that way with “The Pirates! Band of Misfits.” A pirate picture that’s entirely too late to the party to have much in the line of fresh pirate gags, it is stuffed with name voice actors, from Hugh Grant as The Pirate Captain to Salma Hayek, Brendan Gleeson, Imelda Stanton, Anton Yelchin and Jeremy Piven. And all of them sat in a recording booth and struggled to find funny things to say or funny ways to say the not-so-funny things in the script. Amusing in small doses, “Pirates” is the first Aardman film to suffer a serious shortage of sight gags, the first where the whimsy feels forced and the strain shows. Hugh Grant’s Pirate Captain (that’s his name) is all Hugh Grant stutter and “glittering eyes and glorious beard.” As a pirate, he’s something of a bust, even though his crew adores him. He figures he’s due for the “Pirate of the Year” award. But he’s always come up short in the booty and pillaging department. There’s always a Cutlass Liz (Hayek), Peg Leg Hastings (Lenny Henry) or Black Bellamy (Piven) to beat him to the podium. And so it appears it will be in the 1837 awards, until he captures Charles Darwin (David Tennant), a scientist who craves fame as much as The Pirate Captain. And Darwin recognizes the Captain’s pet “parrot,” Polly, as something altogether more amazing. She’s the last Dodo bird. Darwin talks The Pirate Captain into sailing to Britain, under the nose of pirate-hating Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton), where Darwin hopes to present the bird to The Royal Society, whose entryway is marked “Playing God since

‘The Pirates! Band of Misfits,’ is from Aardman, the same group that’s made claystars out of Wallace & Gromit. 1807.” So you’ve got pirates roughly 120 years after their heyday, and a scheming Darwin paired with his evolved chimp pal, a “Man Pan Zee,” he calls him. You’ve got other scientists, hoping to win acclaim with everything from airships to a Rubik’s Cube. You have competing pirates, all swagger and swordplay. What you don’t have is a lot of laughs. Backing the ship up, we hear the “beep beep beeps” of every modern minivan. There are hints passed from pirate to Darwin about this new idea, evolution,

which he never picks up on. The Pirate Captain amusingly attacks all manner of un-lucrative prey — a ghost ship, a school “field trip” ship, a plague ship. Most of which amounts to a grin, a chuckle. Those of us who love Aardman will appreciate the gorgeous attention to detail, made sharper (not much sharper) by 3-D. But “Pirates” plays like a fussy film made by fussy little fussbudgets, clever chaps all wrapped up with making perfect Plasticine trees, but who lose track of the forest — the funny movie that is sup-

posed to be animated around all this detail. Where’s the invention of “Wallace & Gromit,” the genregoofing glee of “Chicken Run”? Fans know that the weakest Aardman films (“Flushed Away” wasn’t a laugh riot either) are still richer and more rewarding than any “Shrek,” “Cars” or “Ice Age” picture. But as long as these films take to make, as expensive as they are to do, it’s almost tragic when they spend their efforts rounding up big-name misfits, and then give them so little mischief to get into.

‘Five-Year Engagement’ feels about as long By Christy Lemire Associated Press

The problem that plagues so many Judd Apatow productions — the one that keeps good comedies from being great ones — unfortunately exists in “The FiveYear Engagement,” too. It’s a matter of knowing when to say when, of knowing which bits should be trimmed and which should have been cut altogether. “The Five-Year Engagement” is so scattered and overlong, it really feels like it lasts five years, and even the inherent likability of stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt can’t overcome the film’s pervasive sense of strain. It becomes so tortured, it almost gets to the point where you hope these two will break up for good, just because it’s the pragmatic thing to do and because it would finally wrap things up. And that’s a shame, because the movie reunites Segel with Nicholas Stoller; the two also co-wrote 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” one of the more well-balanced Apatow productions, with Stoller once again directing and Segel starring as the doughy everyman. (Stoller also wrote and directed “Get Him to the Greek,” which was hilarious but also overstayed its welcome just a tad.)

Like “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “The Five-Year Engagement” touches on themes of love found and lost in a serious way, and to its credit it does find some moments of emotional truth amid the inconsistent laughs. But man, it can be a messy slog to get to them. It begins promisingly enough, though. Segel’s Tom Solomon, a sous chef at an upscale San Francisco restaurant, proposes to his girlfriend, Blunt’s Violet Barnes, on the one-year anniversary of the night they met: New Year’s Eve. (Flashbacks to their meet-cute are incorporated in amusing ways.) Blunt and Segel have an easy, low-key way with each other in these early scenes that never rises to full-scale, crackling chemistry. But as they’re planning their wedding, Violet gets accepted to the University of Michigan to study for her doctorate in psychology, so they postpone their big

day for the first of many times. Seasons change, years pass and Tom isn’t nearly so enamored of snowy Ann Arbor as he pretended to be at the beginning. Meanwhile, Violet is asked to stay and do post-doctorate work, so they’re stuck in marital limbo even longer than expected. This all sounds like a drag, right? That’s probably because it is. Halfway through you want to yell at the screen for them to run off to Las Vegas and just get it over with already; then again, it becomes increasingly difficult to root for them to stay together when they seem to be headed down such divergent paths. Stoller and Segel try to liven things up with wacky gags and oddball supporting characters, including Tom’s profane boss (Brian Posehn), who’s obsessed with pickling things; Tom’s only friend (Chris Parnell), a university spouse who knits sloppy sweaters and teaches him to hunt deer; and Ming (Randall Park), one of Violet’s research partners who has wild ideas for experiments that are never funny. One character slices off part of a finger. Another loses a toe. And on it rambles. The movie finally finds some muchneeded whimsy at the absolute end — but by then, it’s too late.

His Awesomeness, Jason Statham, has let it be known that he chooses his films based on the fight choreographer the producers hire. Often as not, that blows up in his face. Why else would the Human Bullet from Blighty end up in dogs like “War,” “Transporter 3” and “Death Race”? But with “Safe,” working with choreographer J.J. Perry (“Haywire”), that strategy pays off. A slow-building B-movie thriller, the plot is nothing new for Statham. There’s a girl in need of his protection from assorted gangs of bad men. But the dialogue crackles with flinty one-liners. “Don’t lose sleep. He had it coming,” he tells bystanders after killing a boatload of bad

guys. His bald skull and permastubbled face lean into the camera like the athlete he was and is, bristling at the bit, ready to get on with the serious citywide butt-whipping he’s about to lay on the Russian and Chinese mobs and New York cops on the take. We meet Mei (Catherine Chan), who is in a Russian mobster’s office. He wants something from her. A number. He says he’ll subject her to “one of those tortures you people are so famous for.” Nobody in “Safe” is politically correct. And nobody thinks anything of menacing a little girl. Mei is 11. Flash back to a year before, when Mei was in a Chinese school correcting her teacher’s math. A Chinese mobster (James Hong, reliably evil) needs her as

his courier. Numbers on a computer “leave a trail that’s easy to follow,” he purrs in Mandarin. Little girls who can remember long strings of numbers do not. Writer-director Boaz Yakin (“Remember the Titans,” “Uptown Girls”) keeps us off balance, spending much of the film’s first half hour following Mei, winning sympathy for her plight. Shipped to America, in the care of a murderous adoptive dad (Reggie Lee), she’s had to learn “business” the hard way — witnessing torture, murder, shakedowns and corruption. Then, there’s mixed martial arts cage fighter Luke (Statham), a man who has just crippled an opponent in the ring in a fight Luke was supposed to throw. The Russian gamblers plan elaborate punishment for him. They kill his pregnant wife and turn him

loose, promising to murder anyone he gets close to, no matter where he goes. It’s a promise we see them keep. “If you stay here tonight, tomorrow we’re going to kill your landlady!” Mei slips free of her captors, but only temporarily. The Chinese Triads want her, and the Russian mob, and crooked cops playing both against each other, led by Capt. Wolf (Robert John Burke, menacing as all get out). That’s when Luke sees her and finds, in her, a purpose: keep her “Safe.” What we have here is basically an American “Transporter,” with Statham caught up in the most jaw-dropping, quick-cut fights you’ve seen in years. He plows through Russians on the subway, Chinese gangsters in a casino and cops in between, on the

In the world of B-movie action, Statham’s still the safest bet there is.

King’s “constant readers” can judge whether the story stands on its own, but my guess is fans will be a little disappointed and newcomers won’t find enough to truly love. For that, pick up “The Gunslinger,” first published in 1982, and lose yourself in one of the greatest fantasy epics ever written.

Esteemed organist to have recital at St. Michael’s In the nave of Church of St. Michael and All Angels, there is a historical instrument that stands immediately behind the pulpit. Although only its green, handpainted face pipes are original now, the organ can be likened to being the oldest active member of Hervey the church, Folsom one that Artists in Action “joined” in 1889. With its repairs through the years it has since given tireless service. And this Sunday at 3 p.m., it will do so again, with a man of high caliber at the helm. A recital given by a professor of music, a university organist, choirmaster and concert artist

— all titles held by Dr. Robert Delcamp — will add a highlight in the musical realm for the church and the community. The public is invited, and, according to Dr. Patricia Corbin, the organist at St. Michael’s, it should be glorious event for all who are there. Delcamp holds those four aforementioned titles at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. Under his direction, the university choir has made several recordings and 11 tours of England, including residencies at five cathedrals. “We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Delcamps’s caliber perform here,” Corbin said. “He is exceptionally gifted in this area, and so creative in using combinations of sounds to get the organ’s ultimate effect. It will be a rare treat.” Antiphonal organ pipes were

installed in the rear of the church recently for special musical effects. The installation was in honor of Louis Culver, now retired, who was the Delcamp organist at St. Michael’s for more than 30 years. “I’ll be interested in how he will make use of these,” Corbin commented. The addition of the pipes was made possible by a member of the church, to the glory of God, according to church officials. The member wishes to remain anonymous. As a concert artist, Delcamp has toured extensively throughout the United States as well as in England, Germany and

Luxembourg. His recordings for the Naxos labels represent the compositions of well-known French composers including Camille Saint-Saens, Marcel Dupre, Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor. The St. Michael’s organ is well-suited for French-written music by these masters because of the proliferation of the reed stops, according to Delcamp. His program will contain works of a few French composers as well as those of other nationalities. “All organs are different,” he said. “This one at St. Michael’s is a very complete one for a small church. It’s equipped to play most of the organ repertoire.” The cornerstone of St. Michael’s was laid in 1888 and the church’s construction was completed in 1890, according to church records. “It’s an extraordinary church, historically and

architecturally,” said Delcamp, who was the church’s guest organist in the mid -1980s and in 2005. “And, the set-up for performing music is good.” “The organ is in great shape now,” said Corbin. ‘I’m just looking forward to sitting in the congregation and hearing wonderful music.” Sunday’s audience will hear a blend of tones, both majestic and soothing. It is the type of color that only an organ can produce, according to Discovering Music, a text by Howard D. McKinney and W.R. Anderson. Delcamp, who knows this organ well, is making sure that the recital will be enlivening. “It will be an eclectic program to show off the organ,” he said. A reception in the Parish Hall will follow the recital.

or Hayley Long, becoming an actress was something that happened one day at a time. Like many when she turned 40, she hit a crossroad. “You’re at a certain age and you think, ‘I’m not ever going to be able to do these things again,’ but I’ve realized you can,” she says of following her passion after spending 18 years working in visual arts. “In my mind I was just really unhappy. I just made a choice to … change my life and do the things I enjoy.” She made the leap and now the 44-year-old has landed her biggest character yet, the female lead role in CAST’s current production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Now she’s four productions in with the company, Long is stepping into her first dramatic — and lead — role. “This is the part of a lifetime for me, to be honest,” she said. “There’s a lot more meat to this play than any one that CAST has done.” On her quest to pursue a different career, get in shape and spend more time with her son, Long moved into a full-time position at Camp Mac that included teaching drama, but it didn’t quite turn into the opportunity she pictured. “(Working) seven days a week in the summer is not spending more time with him,” Long said. She realized of missing her son, and after a few years she decided to leave work and concentrate on acting, which led to her first role with CAST in “Miracle on 34th Street” in 2010, where she performed alongside her son in what was his first role as well.

To prepare for this role, Long watched numerous versions of the play, and said she thinks her performance falls in between the depictions of her character as played by Natalie Wood and Elizabeth Taylor.

“The part is completely opposite of me,” she says. “The way (Maggie) is — she may appear to be conniving and mysterious … (but) I think she genuinely cares about people in her own little selfish way.” There have been a few hoops to jump through while undertaking the transformation. “Tennessee Williams uses a lot of alliteration, and he repeats the same lines over and over throughout

the script, so you don’t know where you are a lot of times,” Long laments. “But he tells the story so nicely, that some of the lines just have come naturally — you feel like you’re actually that person.” Becoming Maggie has only presented one other real challenge — that of the costumed variety. “I don’t have the bosoms for the part,” she says with a laugh. “But we’ve made that work!” While the play does have some adult moments, the overall message is one of family relationships, Long said. “Even though it’s (set) in the 1950’s, all those subjects are still brought up today,” she said. “What’s interesting about this play is that it touches on really deep family issues and controversy … “We all have problems and challenges that we go through with family, but it works out in the end.” Life for the mother and wife has definitely become sunnier since she decided to follow her heart. “I’m happy, I’m doing things I love, and I’m being with my son — it’s just unbelievable the difference in the quality of life I’m living.” As far as the future is concerned, Long, who is vice president of the Anniston Runners Club — and has lost 30 pounds, to boot — is taking the summer to concentrate on training for the 10K AJC Peachtree Road Race in Georgia. “I’ve been in four straight plays … I need a little sabbatical!” she said. Even so, Long is pleased with the way that things have turned out, and can attribute her upswing to one simple philosophy: “Just take little steps that can turn into big steps … one day at a time.”

PHILADELPHIA — It’s a long and twisty trail that leads from Alexander the Great to Larry the Cable Guy, but the History Channel would gladly travel it again. The cable outlet launched on New Year’s Day in 1995 with lofty aspirations befitting its name. It offered a library of documentaries about everything from the Precambrian era to the Crusades to the Korean War. Ladies and gentlemen, we have discovered the cure for insomnia. The subject matter was too dry for TV’s heightened narrative style. “It gets to the general tension of how to exhibit historians who tend to work in nuance and complexity in a medium that favors absolutes and dramatic contrasts,” says Paul Steege, an associate professor of history at Villanova University. “There is a conflict there that is not always reconcilable.” And the scholarly stuff was a bust from a business point of view — far too expensive and time-consuming to produce, limited in appeal and absolutely dormant in repeat airings. So the channel cast about for pastimes that were proven crowd pleasers. For some time, it was sarcastically referred to as “The Hitler Channel” for its seeming fixation with German military in WWII. It was all Nazis all the time. By 2008 when the cable company’s name was officially shortened to History, a seismic shift had begun. The previous year, the channel had introduced “Ice Road Truckers,” which focused on long-haul drivers working in brutal conditions north of

On basic cable, that’s a stand-up triple. “Ice Road Truckers” was manifestly a reality show although History insisted it was the forerunner of an entirely new genre, “American originals.” By any name, it was a hit. And History saw a clear path into a profitable future. “We’re a ratings-driven business and at some point volume has to come into play,” says Nancy Dubuc, the channel’s GM who designed its more contemporary, series based strategy. “We easily could have stayed a smaller niche

player,” says Dubuc, “But the more successful we are in attracting audience and advertisers, the more we can invest in programming.” The roster of “American originals” mushroomed: “Ax Men,” “Mud Cats,” “Big Shrimpin’,” “Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy.” In the last six years, viewership of the channel has nearly doubled. Its most popular series “Pawn Stars” (5.8 million), “American Pickers” (5.2 million) and “Swamp People” (4.6 million) draw more viewers than some primetime network shows. They draw more male viewers than almost all network shows. History’s lineup is flypaper to younger men (18-34).

The channel ranks second in cable only to ESPN. And advertisers will pay a premium to reach that demographic which is harder to find on TV than Jimmy Hoffa. Those profits in turn go to pay for prestige programming like “Vietnam,” an ambitious HD project, and “Gettysburg,” the 3-D Civil War extravaganza produced by Tony and Ridley Scott that won four Emmys. The channel still takes scorn for making a mockery of its mandate. But History isn’t the first cable outlet to change on the fly in pursuit of better numbers. “MTV is a great example of a channel that branded itself and then saw the TV landscape shift,” says Matt McAllister, professor of media studies at Penn State. “You can only hope the original meaning in your logo doesn’t mean so much. The M in MTV of course stands for Music. But they don’t really play music anymore,” he continues. “It’s almost as if the M is meaningless in the era of Jersey Shore.” So just how flexible are the History boundaries? “Five years ago I would have said you absolutely may not do reality competition shows; now we have two,” says Dubuc, referring to “Full Metal Jousting” and “Top Shot.” “So I’m leery of naming things we’ll never do.” A wise resolution. Just weeks after this interview, the channel announced it would venture for the first time in 2013 into scripted drama series with “Vikings,” the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrock. History is always evolving.

Q: Thanks to Netflix, I’ve recently ignited my old love for the show “Reaper.” I’ve finished both seasons in a matter of days. The second season ended in a huge cliffhanger but I discovered it was canceled. I just wanted to know if there is any chance of a Season 3 and if not, why was it canceled? It was a great show. A: I also liked the supernatural comedy-drama about a young man (Bret Harrison) working for the devil (Ray Wise) to catch people who have escaped from hell. But the CW dropped it after two seasons after disappointing ratings. While there was reportedly an attempt to continue the show in syndication or to a cable network, that did not pan out and the cast and producers moved on to other projects.
