The two characters take turns narrating the chapters. The technique makes clear just what a Ned Flanders-Homer Simpson vibe they share.

Following Horkman’s disputed soccer call, the pair eventually find themselves involved in a road rage incident that New York authorities mistake for a terrorist plot. They escape a massive manhunt by stowing away on a clothingoptional cruise, and from there things get really crazy.

With a Forrest Gump-like ability to land in historical moments, they’re thrust into separate conflicts involving Cuba, China, Mogadishu, Israel and Palestine. There are even cameo appearances by Donald Trump and Sarah Palin.

Without giving away too much, the protagonists end up with high-profile roles at a Republican National Convention (even though Horkman is a Democrat). U.S. presidential politics are never the same after that.

Lunatics has plenty of bright spots, including moments of potty humor that are sophomoric yet hysterical. The book is creative, unusual and over the top. Just don’t expect it to be as laugh-a-minute as a typical Dave Barry column.

Band and dinner theater put area talent on display Alabama’s got talent, certainly in this part of the state. Two events within one week’s time this month will highlight this fact when audiences see the Dill Pickers, a string group from BirHervey mingham, Folsom on Sunday, Artists in Action Jan. 15, at First United Methodist Church, and area actors in SubPrime Suspect, a dinner theater at Heflin’s Community Arts Center on Friday, Jan. 20, and Saturday, Jan.21.

The Dill Pickers performance, presented at 2 p.m. at The Bridge, is sponsored by the United Methodist Women of Anniston’s First United Methodist Church. It is a fundraiser for Interfaith Ministries. The Bridge is the building behind the church at 14th and Noble streets.

The group’s performance should make for a fun afternoon, say Cathy and Dan Pitts, who saw the group last August at a dinner theater in Springville.

“This group is multi-talented.

They swap instruments, and the songs and witty dialogue make for good, clean, entertainment,” Cathy said. “It’s definitely familyfriendly.”

The musicians are versatile in their abilities. Their program gives viewers a taste of blues, bluegrass, Cajun, folk, gospel, Irish and rock. But a strong Anniston connection within the group makes it even more special.

Norton Dill, son of the late Flo and Laurence Dill of Anniston, is the lead singer and writer of some of the songs. His father, Dr. Laurence Dill, was senior pastor of FUMC in the 1970s. During that time, Dr. Dill and Flo took the lead in founding Interfaith Ministries, according to Nan Christian

The mystery dinner theater will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 and Jan. 21 at Heflin’s Community Arts Center. The dinner will follow an Italian theme. Tickets are $30. The Heflin Arts Council coordinates the event.

“I love to make people laugh, that’s my main goal,” Stedham said, “but there’s a mystery to solve. The audience will have to pay close attention for hints and clues.” Each table will be given a chance to buy clues at $1 per clue in deciding whodunit.

Aretha Franklin to play Essence Fest NEW ORLEANS — Newly engaged queen of soul Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Stephanie Mills and Charlie Wilson are among entertainers set to perform at this summer’s Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.

The event, set for July 6-8, is billed as one of the largest gatherings of black artists in the country. Performances will be held at the Superdome while seminars with speakers, artists and authors will take place at the city’s convention center.

This will be the 18th annual Essence Music Festival and the third time Franklin has performed at the event.

Franklin, who became engaged over the holidays to longtime friend Willie Wilkerson, performed during the festival’s inaugural year in 1995 and again in 2005.

Band’s name couldn’t be further from the truth

What do Diana Ross and the Supremes, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, and Robin Hitchcock and the Egyptians have in common?

If you guessed the fact that the lead members were bold enough to headline their names in the group’s title, then you’re right.

“It just always kind of struck me that a musician could say, ‘Hey, I’m this famous person and then here’s my band — they’re not really relevant,’” said Jeremy Ponder, the lead singer of the tongue-in-cheek-named band Frontman and the Afterthoughts.

Their name is a nod to the days of rock ‘n’ roll where the lead singers, or frontmen, would claim the band by putting their name in the title, says Ponder, but it couldn’t be farther from the truth.

“I pride myself on being a songwriter, but, I admit, if I do have a weakness, it’s live performing,” he said. “These guys have all been in bands before.

They know what they’re doing, and they’re just extremely talented, and I don’t deserve them,” he said of the punk rock-rooted clan.

The Afterthoughts, comprised of bass player Jeffrey Bailey, drummer Clint Morrow, and lead guitarist (and Jeremy’s cousin) Benji Ponder, was chiefly Jeremy’s idea.

“I’ve always been in a band,” he said, “and this was just the next one in line, I guess.” Ponder, who had actu-

The most recent addition has been Bailey, who has only been with the band since the fall.

“He’s really elevated what we’ve been doing,” said Jeremy of his fellow member, who will make his debut Saturday when the band plays at Crimson Tiger in Anniston.

The band, whose music is described by Jeremy as “punk rock that draws on oldies and classic rock and grunge,” alternates between playing covers and original music when they perform. Since coming together in July 2010, they’ve only played a handful of live shows together, and has been even less aggressive about recording music. Talk of an EP has come up, but Jeremy is intrigued by the idea of just releasing a single here and there.

“It just seems like a bit of an antique idea to have to hole up in a studio somewhere and record an entire hour’s worth of music and then unleash it upon the people,” he said.

With families and distance separating them, Ponder believes the band’s performance schedule is at an ideal pace for honing their talent.

“I disagree with the common knowledge that you have to go out and grind it out and tour every weekend, or a week or two out of the month.”

Social media helps, too.

“I believe you can reach your audience from anywhere, and I think now more than ever, patience is a virtue for an artist,” Jeremy said.

The band plans to cultivate more material and plans more shows for 2012, and even playing more around the Southeast.

“We would love to get with another band and play a series of two or three shows, branching out — have a ‘buddy band,’” said Morrow. Adds Jeremy, “I actually think we’re just getting to the point where people are recognizing who and what we are. I think we’re just kind of on the cusp of a lot of that happening.”

Either way, the group is destined to have a good time. Says Benji, who practices on his own because he lives in Mobile: “Every time we get together, it’s like we haven’t missed a beat.”

‘Sons of Anarchy’ CD gives Sagal music outlet

NEW YORK — Somebody get Katey Sagal a record deal — no really.

Although she’s happy with her day job on the successful F/X series Sons of Anarchy, in her heart, she’s a singer — and she gets a chance to show it as part of a new collection of songs from the show’s first four seasons.

“I love being an actor, but there’s something about playing music that’s a gift,” the 57-yearold Sagal admits.

In the past, Sagal recorded on Elektra and Casablanca Records.

But times have changed in the music business for her, and she paid to record her last album.

Sagal yearns to record again in a more traditional manner.

“I’m still old school. I have to go in the studio with a producer.”

Music From Sons of Anarchy: Season 1-4 features three songs

by Sagal, and represents a return to her main love. Though Sagal gained her fame as an actress, her first big break in show business was in music.

Sagal sang with everyone from Gene Simmons to Bob Dylan to Etta James. She toured as a backup vocalist with Bette Midler. She was enjoying moderate success when a friend persuaded her to go for an act-

“I didn’t realize until someone said that I should audition for a play, and I did, and I got

it, and all of a sudden I was an actor,” Sagal says.

Sagal’s success began with her role as the tartish Peg Bundy in the sitcom Married With Children, which ran from 1987 to 1997. Another series, Eight Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter,

and her role as the voice of Leela in Matt Groening’s animated series Futurama sealed her fate as sitcom royalty. But she has never stopped playing music.

With a few solo records to her credit, Sagal says she would like to break out and sign a major

record deal. But for now, playing music whenever she can quells her desire. Since she’s always had a band, she welcomed the opportunity to add her distinct voice on cover tunes that were appropriate for specific scenes in the show. Sagal covers standards like “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Bird on a Wire” with soulful edge that works well with the content of the show.

On Sons of Anarchy, Sagal plays the tough-willed Gemma Teller Morrow. Sagal calls her character “an intense survivor with admirable qualities.”

Created by her husband, Kurt Sutter, the television drama tells the tale of a group of bikers in Northern California. They’ve been married for seven years, and doing the show for more than half that time.

“There’ve been some growing pains with it,” Sagal says of being married to her boss. “The only pitfall I say is it becoming allcompassing. .... It’s both of our jobs. We talk about it a lot. He does everything on that show. He writes it. He edits it. He directs it.”

But it’s not business in the household.

“The good news is we have these three kids at home, and they definitely pull focus, because at some point you can’t talk about your work,” Sagal said.

‘Idol’ Kelly Clarkson to sing anthem at Super Bowl

American Idol Kelly Clarkson is set to perform at America’s most popular sporting event: the Super Bowl.

Clarkson has been chosen to sing the national anthem before the NFL championship game at Indianapolis on Feb. 5, a person familiar with Super Bowl entertainment plans told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because no announcement has been made. The league is expected to reveal the anthem singer later this month.

Since becoming the first winner of

American Idol a decade ago, Clarkson has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and had more than a half-dozen singles reach the top 10 in the Billboard Hot 100.

Among her hit songs: “Since U Been Gone” and “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Her latest album, Stronger, was released last year.

Clarkson is currently on tour and appeared as the clarkson musical guest on Saturday Night Live last weekend.

Bowl pregame festivities at Lucas Oil Stadium: country music couple Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton, singing “America the Beautiful.”

Grammy-winner Lambert released her latest album, Four the Record, last fall.

Shelton is a judge on The Voice, a singing competition on NBC, which is broadcasting the Super Bowl this year.

The NFL announced in December that Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Madonna will perform at halftime of the league’s title game.

At last year’s Super Bowl between the Packers and Steelers in Dallas, pop star Christina Aguilera flubbed a line while belting out the national anthem.

When she was supposed to sing the line “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” Aguilera instead repeated an earlier line, with a slight variation — drawing plenty of attention on social media such as Twitter.

Afterward, Aguilera released a statement saying: “I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”

Others who have performed the national anthem at the Super Bowl include Carrie Underwood — like Clarkson, an American Idol product — Whitney Houston, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, Beyonce and Mariah Carey.

Falling Empires is a wildly uneven album of oddly unmatched styles. It has the kind of brash risk-taking normally reserved for such massive rock bands as U2, Radiohead and R.E.M. looking to reinvent themselves, not bands best known for having radio hits launched from Grey’s Anatomy.

(Maybe “New York,” which was part of last week’s Grey’s, will bring similar success.)

Unfortunately, it also falls a bit short, because Snow Patrol is not

They try, though. “The Weight of Love” starts off acoustic and builds into something that sounds like U2’s “Even Better Than the Real Thing” covered by Hothouse Flowers. “In the End” sounds like The Killers on the verses and Coldplay on the chorus. On the title track, they twist an unusual song structure into something that approximates Arcade Fire at a rave, which also seems to be what “Berlin” is going for.

Snow Patrol fares far better on its home territory. Singer Gary Lightbody is way more believable as a super-earnest Chris Martin on fragile guitar-driven ballads like “Life-ning,” where he rolls out a list of “This is all I ever wanted from

life” that includes “Ireland in the World Cup” and “Words of reassurance, but only if they’re true.”

Never satisfied, that Snow Patrol. Good on them for stretching, but Fallen Empires is a little beyond their grasp.

HOT SONG Is Adam Lambert trying to send out secret messages through his singles? His new single, “Better Than I Know Myself” (19/RCA), sounds like a Celine Dion ballad filtered through Ryan Tedder and Bruno Mars. In other words, it doesn’t sound like Lambert, but perhaps what record company moguls would like him to sound like. Hopefully Lambert gets to shake off the blandness on the rest of the forthcoming Trespassing album.

‘Joyful Noise’ doesn’t have much past music

Joyful Noise, sort of a Glee!-meets-gospel music choral competition musical, makes a pleasant enough racket. A cheerful, not-quite-off-color crowd-pleaser that rarely breaks formula, it’s the big screen equivalent of a sloppy smooch from your over-affectionate aunt over the holidays.

You grimace. You stand there and take it. And you don’t let anybody see you grin afterward.

Writer-director Todd Graff, who specializes in this sort of cheerful, campy musical (Bandslam, Camp) lured Dolly Parton back from the surgically altered wilderness and paired her with Queen Latifah. They play two big belters with competing visions of how their integrated, uplifting small-town church choir can win the big Joyful Noise choir contest.

Will they wear the robes, keep the showmanship to a minimum and perform unadulterated gospel pop? Or will they show some flash, adapt mainstream love songs of the past and rock the house?

You remember Sister Act. You know the answer to that.

Vi Rose (Latifah) takes over as choir director when their longtime director (Kris Kristofferson) has a heart attack and dies after a performance. G.G. (Parton), his widow and the choir’s big financial benefactor, isn’t happy about that. But she grits her teeth and carries on, delivering homespun wisecracks along the way.

drome takes the form of an obsession with songs of one-hit wonders.

Graff’s script is a real cut-and-pastefrom-the-zeitgeist affair, from the movie disease of choice (Asperger’s) to the hard times — Pacashau is a dying town suffering in a down economy. Vi Rose is essentially a single mom because her husband is in the Army. And Graff made his script sellable by tilting it toward the younger characters.

What he fails to do in this “big game” formula film is to give the story a villain, someone or something to overcome and root against. He rubs the edges off his two leads, who harmonize onstage and barely set off sparks in their arguments offstage.

The parent-child fights feel forced. The choir’s big rivals in choral competition are underdeveloped, and the long-suffering pastor (Courtney B. Vance, of course) isn’t that much of a threat to “shut down the choir.”

‘Boardwalk Empire,’ ‘Moneyball’ out this week

New DVD releases this week cover everything from booze to baseball.

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season, Grade A-minus: The series has the same kind of complicated and damaged characters as The Sopranos, but this time they’re presented against a masterfully detailed background of one of the most volatile times in American history.

Set in Atlantic City in the 1920s at the start of Prohibition, the series follows the lives of a handful of people caught up in the corruption and killings of the era.

At the center is Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a shifty politician and midrange crime boss who, like Tony Soprano, must deal with his own demons while trying to maintain order.

Just as with The Sopranos, this series draws a harsh contrast between the brutal and benevolent actions of the players.

Thompson can go from lamenting over the fate of a preemie baby to issuing an order to end a life without a blink.

The cable series has won eight Emmy awards and two Golden Globes.

Moneyball, Grade Bminus: The film by director Bennett Miller follows the real-life efforts by Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) to compete in a major league baseball world where everything is driven by money.

Tarson’s being forced to follow a career path he doesn’t want and that affects his professional and personal lives.

Director Christopher Farah properly mixes the emotional drama with the fun of the meaningless competition. The film has a message but never gets too preachy.

Mark Wahlberg delivers the goods in Contraband, a B-movie about smuggling in boozy, corrupt New Orleans.

It may telegraph its punches and follow that “one last job” heist picture formula. But the cascading collapse of first one best-laid plan and then another and the odd moment of jaw-dropping surprise make this a thriller with its share of nail-biting moments.

Wahlberg plays Chris Farraday, a smuggler who has gone legit — selling household alarm systems. His old man, Bud, is in prison. His wife, Kate (Kate Beckinsale), runs a beauty salon. They have two kids.

He’s wised up and left “the life” behind.

But his wife’s younger brother (Caleb Jones) hasn’t.

And after he dumps drugs overboard when the Customs and Border Protection guys board his ship, the kid’s in the hole to a pretty bad hombre, played with his usual goateed glee by Giovanni Ribisi. To save the kid and his own family, Chris takes on that onelast-you-know-what.

And just as sure as Chris reassures Kate — “I know what I’m doing, nothing’s gonna happen,” you know at least half of that statement is a whopper.

No amount of help from his pals (Ben Foster, Lukas Haas) will make this go smoothly.

Hiring the director of the film this is based on, the Icelandic thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam, pays off not so much in the American-rewritten script, which follows a hardbitten formula, even down to the dialogue. “Don’t TELL me you don’t miss this,” Ribisi’s smuggler-villain squeals when seeing his old colleague back on the beat.

Kormakur is fascinated by the world of modern merchant vessels — the post-9/ 11 security that’s on board, the quick turn-around on hitting port, forcing Chris to take one wild gamble after another as he tries to pick up his contraband in Panama. Diego Luna plays a Panamanian mobster he has to haggle with and J.K. Simmons is the imperious, drawling ship captain who is furious to discover “the spawn of Bud Farraday” has signed on to his crew, a crew that includes such Chris cronies as Tarik (Lucky Johnson) and Olaf (Olafur Darri Olafsson, an Icelandic actor from the original film).

They were going to call Olaf “Igor” at one point, but every movie set aboard a merchant ship has to have an Olaf. Just as every modern thriller has to hinge on cell phones. And every Mark Wahlberg actioner has to include a few beatdowns and that epic moment when he has to warn the bad guy — “I’m coming for you!”

Sure, we pretty much know where this is going once it gets going. We’ve been here before.

But with its sleazy side of the Big Easy settings and its Scandinavian spin on action and violence, Contraband is still a thoroughly entertaining boat ride.

St. Petersburg Orchestra to perform for Knox

If it’s true that music is what feelings sound like, then the latest performance of the Knox Concert Series is apt to be an emotional maelstrom.

On Friday, Jan. 20, Knox welcomes Russia’s Tschaikowski St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, which will perform a program that has been collectively described as a “choreographed symphony” in which each movement is literally a ballet.

The program opens with the 16minute “Daphnis et Chloé Suite.” Based on a second-century Greek folktale, it tells the story of Daphnis, a lonely shepherd, who falls in love with Chloe on the island of Lesbos. Chloe is abducted by pirates, rescued by the god Pan and returned to Daphnis amid great joy and celebration.

The piece ends with the “Bacchanale,” described in the orchestra’s literature as, “a full spectrum of orchestral color (that) creates a feeling of uncon-

Founded after World War II, The Tschaikowski St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra has worked in various genres and is renowned throughout Russia. As evidenced by its program on Jan. 20, the orchestra’s repertoire is diverse, ranging from the Baroque compositions by Vivaldi, Bach and Handel to contemporary music of the 20th century with compositions by Schnitke, Banshikov, Desyatnikov and Kancheli.

For the past 10 years, the orchestra has become an ensemble, including the regular commissioning and performances of new compositions, many of which were written especially for the orchestra each season.

This will be the orchestra’s first time performing at Knox.

Golden Globe nominees ready for Gervais’ wrath

LOS ANGELES — When Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais took sharp swipes at Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, Robert Downey Jr. and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at last year’s ceremony, some criticized the comedian for going too far.

Downey described the vibe as “hugely mean-spirited, with mildly sinister undertones.”

With Gervais back for his third turn as Globes host on Sunday, nominees are already preparing themselves for the British funnyman’s pointed jabs.

“I’ll probably get the piss

taken out of me, but it’s fine with me,” said Elton John, nominated for his song from Gnomeo & Juliet. “I’m British. I can take it.”

Johnny Galecki, who is up for his first Golden Globe for his work on TV’s The Big Bang Theory, said that when gervais he got word he was nominated, “one of my first five thoughts was, ‘Oh Christ, Gervais is going to make fun of me.’”

But the actor isn’t really worried.

“I’ll be flattered by it,” said

the 5-foot-5 Galecki. “I’m looking forward to it. I hope he doesn’t just zero in on the height. That’s just easy pickings.”

Damian Lewis, nominated for his work on the TV series Homeland, said he might also be an easy target for Gervais.

“If he’s got a thing about redheads, I’m a sitting duck,” Lewis said.

Glee and American Horror Story executive producer Ryan Murphy is excited about Gervais’ return and the spice he brings to the three-hour telecast.

“It’s always good with the shows to have an unpredictable element to them, and he

certainly is that,” Murphy said.

“He’s very funny and very smart and I think he will make nominees even more nervous than they already are, which is kind of funny.”

Seth Rogen, who produced and starred in best picture nominee 50/50, is also looking forward to Gervais’ return. He even went online to check out what the comedian said last year.

“It was the first time in a long time I’d gone on YouTube and watched something an awards show said,” Rogen said.

Supporting actor nominee Christopher Plummer said he appreciates Gervais’ irreverence.

“I think finally everybody’s

come to that same conclusion: That that’s him, he doesn’t mean it, but he’s very funny,” Plummer said.

Jean Dujardin, nominated for his starring role in the silent film The Artist (which is also up for best picture and is the night’s leading nominee with six bids), said it would be an honor if Gervais even mentioned him.

But there’s a caveat, the actor said: “If he mocks me, he has to do it silently, without any words.”

The 69th annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and broadcast live on NBC.

grassroots Dugger Mountain Music Hall grows to an audience of more than 90 million with weekly broadcast

ake a ride down Highway 9 on a the third Saturday of the month, and about seven miles south of Piedmont the sound of music and fellowship can be heard drifting on the night breeze through the pine trees.

The source of this down-home good time is the Dugger Mountain Music Hall, an unassuming white building where guitar pickers, banjo players, Southern gospel singers and musicians of all stripes show up — either from nearby front porches or as far off as Nashville and beyond — to share their talents with the community. But this local secret has officially stepped into the spotlight.

The Music Hall itself seats 80 people on a good night, but, thanks to the Legacy Network, musicians performing on its stage could potentially reach more than 90 million households. Live at Dugger Mountain Music Hall, a 30-minute show that premiered last weekend, will air locally on Channel 24, Saturdays at 6:30. In addition to the live music, there will also be interviews with featured musicians and songwriters. This week’s episode will feature Huntsville’s Shane Adkins, a singer/songwriter and 2005 International Fingerstyle guitar champion from Huntsville.

“The Dugger Music Hall is an intimate, personal setting where the cameras can pull in really tight and show the fingerwork of the players,” says Tom Potts of Potts Marketing Group, which is producing the show. “It’s not flashy or glitzy. This is very relaxed, down-home Americana, the way it should be … like having these amazing musicians playing right in your living room.”

But there’s more to Dugger Mountain than meets the eyes and ears. The music hall serves as the public face for a low-key ministry founded by local Christian singer/songwriter Bob McLeod.

In 1996, Our Father’s Arms was born in a dilapidated house in northeast Alabama. Today, its facilities include a 30acre farm with a home for men, a nearby 3-acre farm with adjoining home from women and children as well as a “communications center” that includes the Dugger Mountain Music Hall.

Our Father’s Arms is not a halfway house, nor is it a rehab — though it’s served those purposes in some ways — rather, it offers “homes of healing and hope for families in crisis,” McLeod explains. And it does it all free of charge.

Admission to performances at the Music Hall is free — as are the meals served on those third Saturdays of the month — but there are cans strategically placed for love offerings, with all the

money going to serve those families in need. Even the musicians play for free.

“I’m not some great visionary,” McLeod says with a laugh. “All this stuff has happened in spite of me. It’s been such a delight because it’s labor without toil.”

From the first chord struck in the music hall to the Legacy Network broadcast, it’s all been “a miracle,” says Potts who is executive producer of the TV show along with McLeod. “It wasn’t something that was pushed or pursued.

It just kinda … happened.”

In 2008, McLeod got a call from the Calhoun County Baptist Association about an abandoned church they owned the deed for, asking if he’d like to take over the property. After a bit of prayer, McLeod agreed. A year earlier while touring in England with a group raising awareness about orphans in the Ukraine, McLeod got a call from a friend who was leaving the music industry and wanted to donate all of his recording equipment. The equipment was sitting in a bedroom at the Our Father’s Arms

house when the abandoned church was offered by the Calhoun Baptist Association.

It was friend and fellow musician Lloyd Andrews who suggested McLeod turn the old church into a concert hall.

And with the help of residents from Our Father’s Arms, the pews were leaned up against the walls, their padded seat cushions used for sound insulation and the Dugger Mountain Music Hall and Recording Studio was born.

While they plan to feature some well-known performers on the TV show, local talent will still get top billing, McLeod says, adding that some of the Saturday night shows will be taped while others will not.

“Of course when your audience grows from 80 to 80 million, there can be a stampede to the stage,” he says. “We’re still finding our way here. The baby’s just being born, so to speak.”

But no matter how much success the show may bring, or how bright the spotlight, the rewards go to the families seeking help through Our Father’s Arms.

“What’s most important is knowing this is going to provide a means to get a lifeline to more hurting people,” McLeod says. “I know it’s all our heavenly Father, and he’s just letting us take part. Our only ambition is to serve him.”

Couture designs influence the latest in haute fashions, including designer handbags, jewelry and clothes. Oh, and I guess iPhone cases, too.

Things got a little crazy when I went to the website to see what they were all about.

The Couture Case features a black body with some sort of crazy rhinestone design on the back. I really have no idea how to describe it. It looks a little like someone took a cross to Hobby Lobby and let kids go wild with the rhinestones.

I allowed my lovely girlfriend to use the case over the course of a few days. I observed her while she texted, talked and surfed the web. Creepy, I know.

She didn’t seem to do anything out of the ordinary. I heard no requests for a fashion catwalk in the living room, at least.

In fact, she does like the Couture Case’s thin nature. It still protects the phone rather well. Not as good as her Otterbox, mind you, but Hub Innovations’ product is way more fancy. It fits better in a pocket, too.

Unfortunately, some of the design began to fall off the case after only two days of use.

The case might be well-built, but you’ll have problems with the funky bling-bling, for sure.

The price tag is insanely high for an iPhone case. Though, I suppose that a would-be fashion model would fall in love with it.

Maybe walking around town rockin’ the Couture Case is just what you need to be discovered.

Q: I have a question about an old movie but I cannot remember (or I’m not sure of ) the title.

This movie was about a military officer working in England during WWII and somehow the Germans were able to capture him and render him unconscious for a period of time and place him in a “mock” U.S. Army base because they were trying to find the details of D-Day ahead of time. The thing that tipped him off was a paper cut on his finger that he knew had only happened a week ago. What is the name of this movie? I think it was called The Paper Cut but I can’t find any reference to it anywhere.

A: The movie you remember is called 36 Hours, from 1964. James Garner starred, along with Eva Marie Saint and Rod Taylor. It was based on a Roald Dahl short story, Beware of the Dog, which also inspired the 1989 TV movie Breaking Point, starring Corbin Bernsen. The Garner film is on DVD; the Bernsen version was released on VHS. Q: The last new episode of Terra Nova that aired in December was advertised as the season finale. Does this mean that we won’t be seeing any new episodes again until next fall? If so, why such a short season?

A: I cannot even assure you there will be a second season, since Fox has not made that decision at this point in writing (although

What is the cast doing now?

A: Mission: Impossible (now a very successful film franchise starring Tom Cruise) originally aired on CBS from 1966 to 1973.

ABC gave it another try in 1988-90, with Peter Graves returning from the first series’ cast, along with Bob Johnson as the voice giving the missions; another connection to the first series was Phil Morris, the son of the first Mission’s Greg Morris, playing the son of Morris’ character. The cast also included Thaao Penghlis, Antony Hamilton,

Terry Markwell (for the first season) and Jane Badler (for the second). You may remember Badler from the original version of V; she also appeared on ABC’s recent revival.

Graves died in 2010.

Hamilton died in 1995.

Johnson died in 1993.

Markwell continued to act for about a decade after Mission, but the Internet Movie Database lists no credits for her after 1997.

Penghlis spent many years in daytime, including on Days of Our Lives, and — judging from the photos on his website — mixes acting and travel. Phil Morris has acted and done voice work in numerous series, and became a TV legend as lawyer Jackie Chiles on Seinfeld.

Q: Can you tell us whether Merlin will return for a third season?

We’ve watched for it on Syfy but still haven’t seen it. Also, when will Southland be on next?

A: Southland resumes on TNT on Jan. 17. Syfy has already aired three seasons of Merlin, with the third coming to DVD on Jan. 17. The fourth season is already underway.
