Page 18 Sunday, May 22, 2011 handley high school Handley High School will hold commencement exercises for 97 seniors at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Wright Field. Baccalaureate services will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Roanoke City Auditorium. Valedictorian is Hillary Patrice Awbrey. She is the daughter of Pat and Linda Awbrey of Roanoke and the granddaughter of the late Kathryn H. and Reuban Awbrey of Roanoke and Willie Mae Garrett and Herman Garrett of Roanoke. Awbrey was a Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Ambassador, a member of the Rotary Youth Leadership Association, Girls’ State, Key Club, Mu Alpha Theta, HOPE tutoring program, captain of the Marching Band Danceline, Southern awbrey Union State Community College Language Arts Competition (First Place Vocal 2010), Editor-in-Chief of the The Handleyan, President of the National Honor Society and J.U.G. Club, received Academic Letters, played “Gabriella” in the school’s production of High School Musical, and attends the burns Roanoke Academy of Ballet. She plans to follow in her mother’s, father’s and brother’s footsteps and attend Auburn University to pursue a degree in business or communications. She received a Founder’s Scholarship. Salutatorian is Anna Lee Burns. She is the daughter of John T. Burns and Delaina Burns of Roanoke and the granddaughter of the late John W. Burns, Tommy and Barbara Hartsfield of Whitesburg, Ga., and the late William Lindsey and Martha Ann Farr. Burns’ honors and awards include 1st Place in Composition at the Southern Union State Community College Language Arts Tournament, 1st Place in Poetry at the Jacksonville State University Writer’s Bowl, Community Leadership Workshop for Randolph County, Alabama Youth Leadership Programs Conference, Alabama Youth Leadership Programs staff member, Treasurer of the National Honor Society, a member of the Key Club, Anchor Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Student Government Association, The Triangle staff, Talisman staff, Math Team and co-captain of the Danceline. She plans to attend Troy University on a Millennium Scholarship and major in English Education.
