Noire.” The developers filmed actors with 32 cameras, translating every tic and twitch to their virtual doppelgangers, resulting in some of the most lifelike faces ever to appear in video games. Most of the dramatic burden is on Aaron Staton — Ken Cosgrove on AMC’s Mad Men — who creates a believable character in the seemingly virtuous, secretly tormented Phelps. Other Mad Men actors, including Vincent Kartheiser, Rich Sommer and Patrick Fischler, pop up in supporting roles. But it’s John Noble from Fox’s Fringe who chews the most scenery as a rapacious real estate developer. The story in “L.A. Noire” is far more sophisticated than what video games typically offer. But much of the drama is presented in non-interactive cut scenes, suggesting that Rockstar is still wrestling with the balance between storytelling and gameplay. “L.A. Noire” doesn’t deliver everything it promises, but it does point in the right direction. Three stars out of four.

Lykke Li: The pop singer who doesn’t watch TV

NEW YORK — Lykke Li is sitting in a TV studio, preparing for an interview, when she catches herself on the TV monitor. “It’s so weird,” she says, looking at herself. “Like, you see everything. “I think I become a bit self-conscious,” she continues with a light laugh. The TV is turned off. It’s one of the few times the Swedish-born singer has seen herself onscreen. She doesn’t own a TV, and while her music has been featured in TV shows like Glee and movies like Twilight, she hasn’t seen much of it. But that’s just how Li is. “You just let the music go out into the world and find its home,” she said. “When I’m working ... I really take caution and I try to protect myself and my music. But once I’m done, once my album is done, you know, I’m done, kind of.” The twentysomething released her debut in 2008, and while there wasn’t much commercial success, there was critical acclaim. The same goes for her sophomore disc, Wounded Rhymes, released in March. And not only are critics fans of Li’s work, so are rappers: Drake and Odd Future have sampled her songs. The pop-rock singer is touring in the United States and abroad this summer. AP: How’s the tour going this time around? Li: It’s great to be back with material that I feel so much more confident about, and it’s really a pleasure to share an experience with an audience, especially since making this album was such a, like, hardship. AP: Why was it hard? Li: I think always when you’re trying to put all of your thoughts and your soul into something, it puts a lot of pressure on you and you have this vision that you’ve been fantasizing about for a long time, so it’s always hard to bring a vision to life. It’s like giving birth — it takes a lot.

Li: We went there in the winter and nobody was there. ...There were no toilets, so every time you had to pee you had to just take off, like, 10 pairs of long johns. It was really, really cold. Really painful. And we ran in

the forest for like two hours and I had high heels and I kept on, like, falling, you know, and hitting the ground. AP: So you’ve lived in Sweden, New Zealand, Portugal, India, Nepal and Morocco. Li: My mom was a photographer and my dad was a musician, and just I think (they are) wild at heart and true Bohemians. So they couldn’t really, and they still can’t, they couldn’t really find the spot where it felt sweet, so they took their three kids and tried out a few different places. You know I can’t remember that much, but it was a very nomadic experience.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Lukas Nelson clearly remembers the conversation that launched him on the path to playing guitar for a living. Nelson was 10 or 11 and his father, Willie, was showing him a few things on the guitar. The son asked his father what he’d like for his upcoming birthday and the answer changed Lukas Nelson’s life. “He said, ‘I want you to learn how to really play guitar,’” Lukas Nelson remembered. “I said, ‘OK,’ and I did. I fell in love with it. “ Lukas Nelson threw himself into learning the guitar and his progress will be on display this summer when he joins his famous father and a host of rising country music stars on the “Country Throwdown Tour”. Willie Nelson headlines the traveling festival that kicks off today in Philadelphia. Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Lee Brice and Brantley Gilbert among others will join the Nelsons on the 25-city tour. And while the iconic Country Music Hall of Famer is looking forward to seeing those guys, he’s really excited to spend the summer touring with his son. No offense. “Oh, I can’t wait,” Willie Nelson said. “I’m looking really forward to it. We have a lot of fun together and I’m so proud of him that he’s doing so good. Whenever we’re on shows together I want him to come back and play, him and his whole band, and we just set up and jam for a couple of hours.” Lukas Nelson released his first self-titled album with his band, Promise of the Real, last year and expects to play 250 or more shows in 2011. There are times when he looks, sounds and plays like his dad, but the 22-year-old guitarist is clearly attempting to cut his own path. The album is filled with rock ‘n’ roll, from flaming electric

That Lukas Nelson picked up the guitar and hit the road shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s the way he was raised. Lukas and his six siblings were regulars on their father’s tour bus, thanks to homeschooling, and some played and sang on stage with Nelson’s band as they grew up. “We can really have more family time out here than we can on a day off somewhere at home because it really gets so hectic,” Willie Nelson said. “Really we’re

Lukas played the guitar 10 hours a day and entered the

family business of songwriting. He remembers his father being a handy resource, but one who kept it positive. If Nelson liked one of his Lukas’ songs, he might record it, as he did with “You Were It” on 2004’s It Always Will Be. And if he didn’t like a song, he kept it to himself. Locked away in his bedroom,

Lukas chased the sounds made by iconic figures in rock ‘n’ roll who were personal friends — Young, Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp among them. Eventually, though, he felt the pull to step out on his own. In his late teens, he decided to quit school and moved to Southern California, starting his own band there. “I just knew I wanted to play, that I loved to play and that’s what I wanted to do with my life, whether I was going to make money at it or not,” Lukas Nelson said. “By my own decision I dropped out of school and lived in my car for a year and busked on the street. I toured in a van when we first started. I didn’t ask my parents for any money financially. I tried to do it on my own and I’m proud I did it on my own.” While Lukas’ father is the obvious main draw on the “Country Throwdown Tour,” promoter Kevin Lyman thinks acts like the younger Nelson will be the focus of ticket-buyers. Lyman’s original concept was to pair Willie Nelson with a young act like a Dierks Bentley who could serve as a bridge between generations, and he’s mostly succeeded with that premise in the festival’s second year. Lyman believes the Throwdown has the same kind of potential as his “Warped Tour,” which has been on the road for 17 years. There’s a definite outlaw flavor to the lineup and Lyman believes the unique grouping could help secure the future of the event. One thing’s for sure: With the Nelson family along it’s going to be one heck of a party. “I’m looking forward to hanging out with them,” Lyman said. “Everyone’s asking me what’s the difference between the ‘Warped Tour’ and the ‘Throwdown’ and the only thing I could figure out was brown liquor. And that’s not a good thing sometimes.”

Gaga, who co-wrote every tune on the record and again worked with collaborators such as RedOne and Fernando Garibay, doesn’t show particular musical growth, but establishes a consistency of strong material throughout most of the disc. Born This Way needs a bit more editing. A smattering of tracks, like “Bad Kids” or “Black Jesus,” could have been left off for a tighter disc. But it doesn’t take away from its strength, and overall, it’s an album that should add to Gaga’s growing status as this generation’s cultural icon. CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: Most won’t know what she’s saying, and most won’t care, on “ScheiBe” — the German (or is it gibberish?) that comes out of Gaga’s mouth is still undeniably catchy.

I’m not one to beat around the bush, so I’ll just go ahead and tell you what you want to know. And by the look of the box office numbers, what you already know. Is The Hangover Part II better than its predecessor? No. Sorry. However, it’s a pretty decent follow up. It’s darker and grittier — and the jokes are often even funnier and more over-the-top than last time — but director/writer/producer Todd Phillips has to push things as far as he can to make up for what is essentially the same movie script, just Xeroxed. Alan (Zach Galifianakis), Stu (Ed Helms) and Phil (Bradley Cooper)

wake up in some grimy, run down Bangkok hotel and discover that Teddy, (Mason Lee, son of director Ang Lee) the 16-year-old Stanford pre-law student and the apple of the eye of Stu’s disapproving future father-in-law (Nirut Sirichanya), is missing somewhere out in the wild, foreign city. Next comes the search for Teddy, which happens via re-living the events of the previous night. The setting is in Thailand (or as Alan calls it all night, Thigh-land) because it’s the native country of Stu’s fiancé’s family. The used plotting feels stale, which limits the impact of the jokes and the various situations that occur, but that’s largely overshadowed by the outrageousness that’s happening. There are plenty of little sideshows that jump out at you. I mean, who doesn’t love a smoking, drug dealing, denim jacketwearing monkey? Or Ed Helms singing anything? And of course Chow (Ken Jeong) is back and threatens to steal nearly every one of his scenes.

However — Warning: slight spoilers ahead — Teddy, who is on track to become an accomplished surgeon and is already a brilliant classical cellist, loses a finger. I actually really liked that part, because it gave the movie a really tense, dark buildup. And all the dark jokes and gags that stem from that tension are really hilarious. But what I didn’t like is that when the end of the movie comes around, nothing is made of it. It’s just kind of brushed off as no big deal. The resolution falls flat, and it makes all the buildup seem frivolous and empty. Don’t take all this criticism as a sign that I hate the movie, because I was laughing right along with everyone else. Part II is what you expect, but it doesn’t go out of its way to do anything special. Sure it’s raunchier and darker, mainly because it can’t surprise you anymore, but it doesn’t get creative. And that’s fine; it just makes it a good, funny movie. But a not a great one.

The Hangover transformed Zach Galifianakis from a cult comedian to a major star. Still, the North Carolina native regards his new fame warily, and so values his privacy that he shut down his official website. Last week, speaking by phone from a room in the Beverly Hilton to promote The Hangover Part II, Galifianakis proved a reluctant, but still funny, interviewee. Q. You’ve been fairly candid about your feelings about sequels. What made you decide to do this one? A. The fact of the matter is, I wanted to leave well enough alone. Then we got the script. And I gotta tell you, I liked it. And then there was that temptation: “Oh, my God! I can repave my parents’ driveway!” Q. How much of the film was scripted and how much was improvised? A. To keep it fresh on set, you try to say new things. Selfishly, as someone who just loves the energy of people laughing, I would try to make people laugh when they weren’t supposed to. It’s very unprofessional, but it really helped me. Q. Off the set, your co-star Ken Jeong said he would literally cry laughing while you and director Todd Phillips cracked jokes during dinner. A. Ken is such a laugher. I remember exactly where we were eating, and Ken had a couple of wines in him. He laughed so loud it almost overtook the noise of the city of Bangkok. You probably can’t hear this in the background, but I’m in the next room from him, and I can actually hear him laughing so hard right now. Not at me. Q. I found a page from your old website that says, “The entertainment business is both poison and honey.” Can you elaborate? A. Well, the honey is the warmness that I feel from people appreciating the humor I’m trying to do. That’s the beautiful thing. That, and getting a good table at Fuddruckers. The poison is that you get locked into this silly business, and you believe the hype. Q. Yet, here we are, hyping you right now. A. Yep! We’re trying to get the word out about a movie. I don’t know how you’d do it without being interviewed. I wish I could hire a skywriting campaign and have them do their smoke signals — “Hey, watch The Hangover!” — so I don’t have to divulge anything about myself.

The roly-poly Po is back in Kung Fu Panda 2, with high energy, some lovely visuals and peppy, playful voice work, as always, from star Jack Black. But the freshness and novelty that made the original film such a kick back in 2008 has been, well, kicked to bits. And the storyline of this sequel feels overstuffed with plotlines and characters, none of which gets its due individually. Parents also should be aware of some violent, frightening imagery that may be too much for the littlest kids (we’re talking around age 4). Everyone else, though, will probably delight in the animated spectacle from director Jennifer Yuh Nelson, which is bright and tactile, bold and subtle. The 3-D — you didn’t think it wouldn’t be in 3-D, now did you? — is generally unobtrusive but it

doesn’t really add anything, either. The most beautiful parts actually come from the other kinds of visual styles that are worked in, including a delicate segment that features paperstyle animation. “Delicate” probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind when pondering the portly Po, who’s gone from the underdog dreaming of kung-fu greatness all day at his dad’s restaurant to the Dragon Warrior himself. He must protect the Valley of Peace with the help of The Furious Five, the various animal species who fight alongside him and happen to come with celebrity voices. One day, Po begins having flashbacks to long-suppressed childhood memories, and he begins to wonder who his biological parents might have been. As lug-headed as Po can be, even he can figure out that Mr. Ping (lovingly voiced by James Hong), the duck who runs the village noodle shop in the film’s version of ancient China, probably didn’t provide him with any DNA. And so Po goes on a quest — as so many kung-fu warriors must — in search of his past. At the same time, a megalomaniacal peacock named Lord Shen (Gary Oldman) is hellbent on dominating the country with

some serious firepower. These two story lines run parallel to each other and eventually collide but never truly gel. It’s an admirable attempt to develop the character beyond the usual animated kids’ movie hero, but it also results in a crammed narrative that’ll make you wish they’d stuck with one story or the other. In every way, it feels like there’s too much going on — and that includes having too many characters. This is especially true when it comes to Po’s posse, The Furious Five. Except for Angelina Jolie as the fierce Tigress, the animals who comprise Po’s team — Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Viper (Lucy Liu) and Crane (David Cross) — do plenty of fighting but only get a couple of lines here and there, and they’re not fleshed out terribly well. Dustin Hoffman returns in a reduced role as Po’s diminutive mentor, Master Shifu (and there’s not nearly enough of him), with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dennis Haysbert and Michelle Yeoh among the other actors joining the supporting cast. The way to true inner peace comes from knowing that more doesn’t necessarily equal better.

King-Mellencamp ‘Ghost’ musical is ready for stage Associated Press ATLANTA — Horror writer Stephen King’s first play, The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, featuring haunting melodies by rocker John Mellencamp, is finally ready for the stage. The musical was originally scheduled for its debut at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre in 2009, but was postponed. It’s now set to open next April at the Alliance. Mellencamp and the play’s director weren’t getting along, King said Tuesday at the Alliance’s season preview presentation. The new director is Susan Booth, the company’s artistic director. The project originated about 11 years ago, King said. “John had an idea that he wanted to do a play about ghosts in a cabin and how sibling rivalries and resentments are carried down from generation to generation,” King said. He said Mellencamp told his agent he wanted a writer like Stephen King and discovered that the two had the same agent. They got together and agreed to try to write the play, King said. “One of the reasons to do it was because I never had, and John felt the same way.” King said he outlined a story incorporating live brothers and dead brothers. “John wanted it to be in the South because he’s a big admirer of Tennessee Williams. I was fine with that because I’d been reading a lot of William Faulkner, and those voices were in my head.” The show eventually may make it to New York, but King said he wasn’t thinking big. “I wrote a play that we aimed at the idea of a small stage, a small cast and small tech requirements, sort of the anti-Spiderman.” In writing the play, King kept the musical side in mind. “I said, ‘This song goes here, and it’s got to be a song about brothers singing to each other who hate each other.’ So John would write a song.” Mellencamp wrote all the lyrics as well as the music, King said. “Believe me, I can’t write songs. Songs and poetry are just outside my field.”

“Father, I got a few things on my mind/Can we talk for a sec if you got time/If not, it’s OK ’cause I will understand/Nothing’s wrong I’m just tryin’ to be a better man” Lance Baskin is not your typical rapper … nor does he want to be. His single, “If I Could,” which he recorded in March, has been receiving airplay on local station WGBZ-The Beat. The song finds Baskin seeking answers to his daily life, and is a testament to how far one would go to serve God. The lyrics are straightforward and flow easily with the R&B beat they are set to. And while this song is just the beginning of Baskin’s foray into gospel, the conviction heard within his voice and lyrics has a lot of promise: “Daily basis, I’m not the best I can be/I’m not the smartest or the wisest as you can see/If I am diligent I know your love will take me over/Like when you died for the world and took the world over” Baskin, 43, who goes by “Storm,” has pursued music since 1986 and has worked with musicians T.I. and the Ying Yang Twinz, but now knows that gospel is his true calling and has changed his focus in the past year. artist, Baskin believes it was in him all along, saying that every song he has recorded has made some sort of reference to God. “Even when I wasn’t trying to do that — something always led me back to him,” he said. He seeks to minister to others, especially youth, that there is more out there besides the offensive lyrics heard in music nowadays. “I wanted to basically set an example to say ‘Look, you can do music, but it doesn’t have to be profanity, it doesn’t have to be about drugs, killing, demeaning women, demeaning men,” he said. “You can do something that’s more deeper and has a more profound effect as opposed to just a general stereotype, so to speak.” Baskin was prompted to participate in “Battle of the Beats” — which takes place every week on WGBZ — where two songs are played, and then listeners cast their vote for which one they prefer. Baskin says that Justin Simane, a.k.a. DJ Steen, had no reservations about pitting him against a secular song, and even though he lost, he got a lot of positive feedback, and realized that his music was having an impact on others. A military veteran, Baskin is taking a grassroots approach to finding his voice, and is now concentrating on performing at events around the state. He will have a video available for viewing soon, and then he wants to produce a mixtape, and finally an album, which he plans to release in August. The LP will be named “If I Could,” after his title track. Baskin knows that choosing gospel — or even choosing to rap, for that matter, may surprise some. “Even at my age, it sounds a little strange,” he says. Baskin is confident in his mission. “I have no reason to fear anything but God. Something has pulled me to him to give him my full undivided attention when it comes to my music,” he said. “I just feel like there’s something that needs to be said.” Erin Williams is a graduate of Faith Christian School and the University of Alabama.
