Book explores beginnings of forensic science The Killer Of Little Shepherds: A True Crime Story and the Birth of Forensic Science by Douglas Starr; Knopf, 2010; 320 pages, $26.95

The fact that there are no fictional characters to direct in this book can make The Killer of Little Shepherds a difficult read. Author Douglas Starr even admits in his author’s note he “simplified the language in order to make the material accessible to the layman.” This book is based on the French serial killer Joseph Vacher (pronounced Vashay) and the two men who successfully aided the penal system to ensure Vacher received the death penalty. Vacher’s behavior is a worthy lesson regarding how the argument “nature or nurture” defines us. Every chapter is dedicated to the slow progression as a society we have made to our own individuality. It asks the questions: Why did he do that? What makes a pedophile? Or a parent wringing their hands in shame lamenting, “Where did I go wrong?” From 1893-1897 Vacher terrorized the rural areas of France. It was only through the intelligent teachings of Dr. Alexandre Lacassagne and prosecutor

Emile Fourquet that enabled the justice system to put Vacher to death. This is not a book that argues pro or con for the death penalty. Rather, it is an exploration of the workings of human beings. Long before computers or the discovery of DNA, we were a mystery to ourselves. Alienists, (or physiologists) were fascinated with the human brain. The majority still worked under old myths or legends on what make a person insane. With the guillotine as the means of capital punishment, there was an ample supply of condemned prisoners in which to autopsy. Lacassagne was an early 19th-century professor of medicine and criminologist. He authored a physician’s handbook with the exact details to perform an autopsy to determine if the death was fair, foul or suicide. This small handbook began to take roots with his European neighbors, as well as extending its reach to the Americas. It is amazing how accurate he was in a time period that held only an iota of what we know now. He successfully autopsied bodies to prove murder, not suicide, as the real cause of death. The good doctor

also developed thousands of files and exhibits that enhanced his skill and those of his students. They were the CSI’s of 1896 and beyond. On the flip side of the doctor, investigators were also learning and making great strides in detecting criminal behavior. A local magistrate had begun his own show of files and exhibits, which would later become Interpol. He cataloged every criminal within his district’s physical features in such a way they could not escape. His system would play a major role in Vacher’s capture. Vacher was put to death Dec. 31, 1898, going to his grave without his head. His brain was dissected into sections and sent to various doctors for study. Though he tried to escape the death penalty by reasons of insanity, he lost his bid proving that insane humans can be sane enough to understand right from wrong. Which leads me to wonder, are we ever going to get things right? How many mistakes have we made in executing truly insane people who do not know right from wrong? Though The Uncoupling follows a number of women affected, it is Dory Lang, a 40-something English teacher whose marriage had a vibrant sex life until now, who forms the novel’s emotional core. Witnessing Dory move from confusion to frustration and then resignation while her husband attempts every infomercial-endorsed method to regain their sexual vitality — even as she comes

to terms with her teenage daughter’s sexual awakening — is touching and achingly resonant. That’s not to say the experiences of other female characters aren’t equally profound, especially in Wolitzer’s descriptions of the reactions of two different teenage girls to their first sexual experiences. Though the veracity of the story becomes slightly shaky halfway through, as if it cannot withstand the paranormal activity at play, the real pull of The Uncoupling is the breadth and depth of female emotion and sexual expression, dazzlingly rendered in Wolitzer’s crisp prose.

Golf’s biggest star takes on the world’s most scenic courses in ‘Tiger Woods PGA 12: The Masters.’ entry tournaments to earn better sponsorships and spots in more high-profile events, eventually getting the invite to Augusta, Ga. Overall gameplay on the Xbox 360 version I played has changed little from last year’s version, using a pull back and swipe forward on the left stick to swing. The PS3 version works with PlayStation Move and the Wii version has supported motion sensing golfing for

years, but there’s no support for Xbox Kinect. The biggest improvement in “12” is the introduction of a caddie. Your trusty assistant will help you select a club and aim you in the right direction, but you’ll have to backswing and follow through with the correct power to pull off the shot. He’ll often give you choices, such as going aggressive for the pin or

laying up. He’s human (well, at least he’s AI designed to appear human), so he’ll occasionally steer you wrong. But as you gain experience points and skills on the courses, your caddie will also get better with his reads. The game has brought in the broadcast team of Jim Nantz and David Feherty, voices familiar to golf fans that add to the overall experience. The game has a “Masters Moments” feature, in which you can replay famous shots or sequences of holes from past tournament years. Some of them are quite challenging, and they help you appreciate just how talented some of these golfers are. EA’s golf games have always been solid, but the addition of the caddie and Augusta National make “Tiger Woods PGA 12” a must-have. Three-and-a-half stars out of four.

Nintendo mailing it in with Wii To say that Nintendo’s Wii has been a disappointment to me is an understatement. The console that has been heralded as amazing from casual gamers leaves lots to be desired from the hardcore. The Virtual Chris Console, or lack Pittman there of, gets the iSpy biggest beef from me. It sickens me that Nintendo’s entire library of past games is not available to download.

That’s not what I want to talk about today. Instead, I want to place some emphasis on the poor firstparty efforts that the company has done on its newest machine. You don’t buy a Nintendo console for the third-party games, after all. First of all, I must praise the company for what it has done with Mario on the Wii. Both Galaxy games are incredible and take advantage of the motion controls to improve gameplay. New Super Mario Bros. is easily one of the best multiplayer games I’ve ever played. The plump plumber is well-represented.

Aside from Mario, all of Nintendo’s big franchises have not been so hot lately. Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time. In my opinion, it combines atmosphere with terrific gameplay to create the ultimate game. That said, “Metroid: Other M” for the Wii makes me sad. Nintendo outsourced the game to Team Ninja, developers of the “Ninja Gaiden” and “Dead or Alive” games. Bad idea. The game turned out to be a jumbled mess that, in my opinion,

‘The Killing’ worth your time Start with a cold open. It’s usually a gruesome scene of a murder, the raunchier and more explosive the club or party, the better. Next have someone — usually someone just out and about — discover the body. Now the cocky detective arrives at the crime scene with the forensics team — the same team that explains every minute detail as if no one else on the team ever took a science class. Cocky detecBobby tive looks at body, Bozeman starts dry joke, puts Pop on sunglasses and Cultured finishes joke with a pun. Cue The Who. Pan over city. Cut to commercial. Cue the cold comfort of familiarity. Nearly every police drama in my lifetime has been based, at least in part, on that formula. Detectives from Angela Lansbury’s Jessica Flesher to David Caruso’s Horatio Caine have been solving practically the same murder mystery every week for as long as I can remember. AMC’s new murder mystery drama The Killing, based on the

Dutch television series with the same name, is not like most crime dramas. Notable exceptions to the usual format exist, breaking from the typical procedural format of CSI and Law & Order. Shows like The Wire and Twin Peaks come to mind. Even shows like Dexter break from this norm and share at least a little in common with The Killing. Now I’m not knocking crime procedurals, they’re usually wildly popular and last for years. They’re great for reruns because unlike serialized drama, the audience can watch one by itself and 98 percent of the episode is self-contained, and whatever serialized narrative they have running through that season is usually kept to a minimum. The downside to the procedural format is that it produces largely forgettable television. I’ve watched my fair share of Law & Order and only a few episodes have really stuck with me. AMC shows aren’t like that. AMC shows stick with you. And AMC’s The Killing looks to be memorable television so far. The basics: A young girl is killed and a grizzled cop ready to move and get married to her loving fiancé gets sucked into the case. Each hour-long episode covers a day, and the premiere — which was two hour-long episodes — covered

two days. The episodes developed slowly and deliberately, but the emotional payoff was already evident by the end of the first episode, as I really felt invested in the well-being of memorable, well-rounded characters. The environment, like most AMC shows, is very clear and very real. Constantly with the audience in nearly every scene, the cold, wet northern Washington state landscape really sinks into the story as an omnipresent character. My only worry is that this show goes the way of Rubicon, AMC’s conspiracy-based drama that was cut after just one season and poor ratings. Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead have all grabbed up large devout audiences, but Rubicon floundered and was eventually cut. So far viewership has been pretty good for The Killing. After encores the show got about 4.6 million views, second best — after The Walking Dead — for an original show premiering on AMC, so that bodes very well for the show. If you’re interested, an encore of the pilot airs at 2:15 April 8 on AMC, and you can watch previous episodes online at amctv.com. The show airs regularly on Sundays at 9 p.m.

Perhaps hoping to catch the wave of others who found success late in their careers with similar type projects, Davies enlists some A-list talent, from Bruce Springsteen to Metallica, to reinvent some of the Kinks’ most obscure and popular songs including “Lola” and “You Really Got Me.” The results range from above average — like Mumford & Sons on “Days/This Time Tomorrow” — to nearly unlistenable — Jon

Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora on “Celluloid Heroes.” But mostly they’re just somewhere in the uninspired middle. For any such collaboration to succeed, either those who guest star have to reinvent the wellknown classic songs to make them their own or they have to succumb to the power of the original and stay true to it within their own voice. Too often on See My Friends neither happens. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: “’Til the End of the Day” features former Big Star lead singer Alex Chilton in one of his last recordings before his death in 2010. Robbie Robertson, How to Become Clairvoyant (429 Records) Robbie Robertson returns after a more than a decade break between solo albums with the triumphant How to Become Clairvoyant, a reflective and moving collaboration with Eric Clapton. Robertson, the lead songwriter and guitarist for The Band before leaving the group in 1976, has been far from prolific in his solo career. Clairvoy-

ant is just his fifth solo release since 1987, but it’s worth the wait. While his two most recent solo records explored his Mohawk ancestry, Clairvoyant delves into his musical past. “Straight Down the Line” starts the record off with a kick as Robertson, in his whispery growl of a voice, tells the story of advice he got from an old blues man years ago on the chitlin’ circuit. “When the Night Was Young,” the perfect follow and perhaps the record’s best track, reflects on Robertson’s youthful idealism. Robertson was urged on to

make the record by Clapton, who co-wrote three of the songs and performs on seven including the haunting duet “Fear of Falling.” Robertson also gets help from Steve Winwood, Tom Morello, Robert Randolph and Trent Reznor. While it’s a group effort, Clairvoyant is most certainly Robertson’s record. In a moving, alarming and electric six-minute-long sequence, we see the bite, the quick reaction of those with Bethany (Kevin Sorbo is wonderfully credible as Alana’s save-theday surfing dad), the nerve-wracking race to the hospital and the panic in her parents. Hunt, as a mom weeping and praying “Please don’t take her” as she races to the hospital, will make you cry. Craig T. Nelson offers solid support as the doctor who treats Bethany and reassures the always-calm kid when she wakes up, “Those things you’re not going to be able to do? So small.” In many ways, the movie turns “Lifetime Original Movie” as Bethany recovers. She’s a tough kid and is determined to get back in the water “as soon as my stitches come out,” and just as determined to com-

pete again. Robb plays her as plucky, but no Pollyanna. Nicholson, as her friend, and Sonya Balmores Chung, as Bethany’s cutthroat surfing rival, are given wonderful shades of grey to play in their differing reactions to her injury. The voiceover narration breaks up the flow from time to time. And the movie is perhaps a bit too intent on capitalizing on having Underwood in the cast, building up her role. But she’s good in the part and holds her own with more accomplished colleagues. The religious subtext is handled as lightly as you’d expect in a movie about surfers. Bethany’s faith gives her stoicism and resolve in the face of a calamity, alters her priorities and gives her purpose. If you followed news accounts of Bethany’s story, you know she’s one tough young lady. Surfer goes beyond the news to show her inspiring spirit and the soul that surfing, and her faith, have given her.

The knights-errant — strong emphasis on the errant — behind the adventure comedy Your Highness spend more time wallowing in medieval filth than weaving clever laughs and engaging action. Reuniting key players from Pineapple Express — James Franco, Danny McBride, director David Gordon Green — Your Highness plays like a Middle Ages role-playing fantasy dreamed up by the giggly stoners of that earlier comedy. Co-writer McBride and his collaborators apparently set out on a quest to ram as much coarse language and as many adolescent sexual gags into a movie as possible, maybe to cover the fact that the movie doesn’t contain much else. A healthy dose of modern frat-boy crudeness might have been refreshing in this story of two princes out to rescue a damsel from an evil wizard. Sort of The Princess Bride as retold in colorful sailor’s vernacular. Crassness overwhelms Your Highness, though, the vulgar language losing all force by incessant repetition, deadening the lingo so that even the occasional witty wisecracks aren’t funny. This is McBride’s show, explaining why he has top billing over Franco and co-

Despite the colorful costumes, mythological beasties and salty language, Your Highness is a tired tale whose scattered laughs fail to liven up the lumbering action. Green shows no greater poise directing action here than he did with the repetitive gunplay in Pineapple Express, only now he adds some humdrum specialeffects pyrotechnics to the mix. Much of the supporting cast, among them Damian Lewis, Toby Jones and Rasmus Hardiker, barely register, even though they’re integral to the action. With even a little pep, any one of them could have upstaged the lead players, who are monotonous throughout. McBride

sticks to boorish-oaf mode, Portman plays the stoic hero with blandness reminiscent of her Star Wars days, and Franco shows about as much verve as he did as co-host of the Academy Awards. If there was a show to steal, Theroux would make off with it, yet even his hammy villain, surrounded as he is by dull heroes, barely raises the pulse of Your Highness. There’s a delightful sense of bawdiness in Chaucer and other medieval literature, but vulgarity seems the main intent of Your Highness. The movie chokes on its own dreary discourtesies. Here’s one of the milder ones: “You smell like the underside of a sheep’s scrotum.” Oh, you knaves and jesters.

Two local radio stations given ABBY awards Two Calhoun County radio stations were recently given best in broadcasting (ABBY) awards from the Alabama Broadcasters Association. ‘Glee’ goes Gaga with expanded episode LOS ANGELES — Lady Gaga is getting the royal treatment on a new episode of Glee. The hit Fox series will expand by a half-hour for the April 26 episode paying tribute to the pop star. In the 90-minute episode, members of the New Directions high school glee club perform her hit “Born This Way” — and learn a lesson about self-acceptance. Glee, which has been on hiatus, returns with new shows April 19. The series airs at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Director J.J. Abrams to pen thriller novel NEW YORK — Star Trek director J.J. Abrams is headed for a new frontier: Novels. Abrams has a deal with Little, Brown and Company to write a thriller, currently untitled. The publisher said Wednesday that the book would be a collaboration with award-winning novelist Doug Dorst and come out in the fall of 2012 through the Mulholland Books imprint. —Associated Press

Abby Parks Abby is influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac and EmmyLou Harris. She attended Jacksonville State University and is a private guitar teacher at the Donoho School. Her sophomore effort The Homeplace, was recorded at Huntsville’s Sound Cell Recordings with Doug Jansen Smith.

Tony Yardley Tony has been a performing musician for about 40 years most notably with regionally popular bands KnightOwl and The Usual Suspects. His influences include Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Stephen Stills, Steely Dan, Little Feat and James Taylor among many. His first solo instrumental CD, Surface Tension, was released in 2009. Secondhand Jones Calhoun County-based singer songwriters playing originals and some ’90s alternative. This 3-piece formed by Jonn Medders, has been together about a year and is appearing at the Noble Street Festival for the first time.

The Loners This bluesy foursome is appearing for the first time at the Noble Street Festival. They have been individually influenced by a diverse collection of artists, including the Everly Brothers, Muddy Waters, Alex Chilton, Delbert McClinton, Devo, Robert Johnson and Tennessee Ernie Ford.

Bill McAdams Acoustic gospel and a little humor from Jacksonville-based singer/songwriter Bill McAdams. Appearing at the Noble Street Festival for the second year in a row, Bill has been influenced by Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, George Straight and Brad Paisley. His latest CD is titled She Did It.

Kelli Johnson Kelli Johnson is the former lead singer for bluegrass band Distant Cousins and is a regular at the annual Foggy Hollow Bluegrass Gathering. She has opened for Marty Raybon, Claire Lynch, Exile and Sugarland. She produces and hosts her own TV show, Kelli Johnson LIVE, and performs an average of 200 shows per year both solo and with the Americana/ bluegrass band Sweetwater Road.

While the big lure of Anniston’s annual Noble Street Festival is the nationally renowned bike race, it just wouldn’t be a street festival without music.
