Keeping tabs on the turtles for 30 years Diligence and monitoring have helped ensure their survival. By Barbara J.Wilson Anyone who has encountered a sea turtle knows they are one of nature's most beautiful and enduring creatures. The survival and study of sea turtles has been a 30year initiative of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, which began the monitoring and protection program on Keewaydin Island in 1982. During nesting season, the Conservancy patrols the beaches, tags turtles, marks nests and counts hatchlings. For sea turtles to reach adulthood, they must find their way through a litany of obstacles, avoiding natural predators and myriad manmade perils. Only an estimated 1 in 1,000 hatchlings reach adulthood. "V/hile our research shows that loggerbead nesting has declined over the past 10 years, we were very encouraged by the increase in hatchlings that we logged in 2010 and 201 1," says Dave Addison, Conservancy Science co-director and lead biologist. "Unfortunately,in2072, Tropical Storm Debby devastated the Keewaydin nests. Over 63 percent of nests were lost." While the 2012 nesting season's total count is not yet complete, the Conservancy can identify migratory pathways and the areas where turtles forage via satellite tracking. "The knowledge gained on sea turtles' migratory and foraging habits is vital to the survival of these imperiled species," Addison says. Learn more at Conservancy.org'
