I believe now, more than ever, it is time for every adult to make the shift from “Do as I say, not as I do,” to “Be the change you want to see in the world.” For over 20 years Conscious Discipline has fostered this fundamental shift in thinking. The world is changing at a breakneck pace. Belief systems that no longer serve us can and must be replaced by fresh ones. Twenty-four years ago I co-founded Conscious Discipline hoping to use advances in neuroscience, developmental research and psychology to shine the light of new ideas into the field of education. Today, Conscious Discipline finds itself leading a revolution of the heart as concepts initially applied in the classroom extend to every facet of our lives. Conscious Discipline is transformational change for you, for me and for all those whose lives we touch. From Head Start to public schools to private schools to foster care to the family next door, Conscious Discipline has proven itself to increase wellbeing, decrease problem behaviors, cultivate healthy relationships, and increase achievement again and again. But perhaps the most profound accomplishment is the ripple of change created as each individual commits to choosing a connected, compassionate, intrinsically-motivated model for discipline over the punishment and reward-driven models of yesteryear. When I began working with children 35+ years ago, the skills I acquired from my schooling and my supervisors felt inadequate. I was exhausted and frustrated by a broken system and the hurting children within it. These early experiences set me on a path to find social-emotional solutions that are effective, founded in scientific and developmental research, feel true to my heart, and have the power to transform schools, homes, adults and children alike. With the tireless efforts of our staff, our instructors and our dedicated enthusiasts the world over, I can honestly say that these two decades have surpassed my hopes in so many ways! I feel honored to celebrate Conscious Discipline with you, and am confident our ripples will extend indefinitely as so many of us choose to be the change we wish to see in the world. Results that speak for themselves. BESSEY CREEK The first Conscious Discipline Star School was Bessey Creek in Palm City, Florida. In 2004 Bessey Creek earned the distinction of being named a National School of Character by the Character Education Partnership (CEP), an elite honor awarded to only ten schools annually.
ARUBA A handful of determined educators brought Conscious Discipline to Aruba a decade ago. In 2014, Aruba’s Ministry of Education adopted Conscious Discipline as its official character education program for early childcare nationwide!
SLATE RUN ELEMENTARY Slate Run Elementary in Indiana was a “C” level Title 1 School with high percentages of economically disadvantaged (80%), minority (30%) and special education (21%) students. While implementing Conscious Discipline classroom management strategies, the school moved from a “C” to an “A” level in statewide ISTEP assessment – the highest growth in their school district. Additionally, they reduced office referrals by 44% among 3rd and 4th grade boys, a group that represented 37% of total office referrals.
GROW WITH US ACADEMY Grow With Us Academy in Miami, FL is the first U.S. preschool to integrate Conscious Discipline as the functional DNA of the center.
