club, Karyn and John Bryant leading the high school team, Lisa and Jim Usdan with the middle school team, and Amy and Gregg Shepard anchoring the lower school team. The way their work complemented the broader Centennial message was a beauty to behold.

Cabaret Night, a high school senior emcee said that our Centennial year felt like it “was his birthday every day, and each morning his parents would wake him up to remind him again.” When he said that, I knew our efforts had succeeded.

What that meant was books and lectures and parties and movies and ribbon cutting and archives and t-shirts and photos—all now part of our history, part of our message to posterity. In the midst of it, we lived a school year in full together. The corresponding volunteer need grew greater than ever, and our school community rallied. Centennial chairs Ann Fundis and Suann Davis were joined by scores of helpers, none more dedicated than the reunion weekend maestros Tory Sally Fitzgibbon ’86 and Chris Chamberlain ’85. Jo Bernard ’65 led the fundraising effort for our largest reunion ever. Then it all came together under a cloudless May sky in a child-friendly festival spread across our big back yard. Meanwhile, on the Annual Fund front, Katie and Kevin Crumbo led yet another powerhouse group, reaching yet another record total for that essential effort. They were joined by Anna Hemnes and Jake Schwarz on the 1915 Leadership Society front, Jennifer and Mark Chalos chairing new parent outreach, Jane Groos and Betsy Hoffman with the 13 year

The fundamental truth about what we do here, about what has been done here from the earliest days, is that it takes resources—people resources, financial resources, creative resources, intellectual resources. Getting that blend right, identifying what it takes to do something of lasting merit for our community and for our profession, stands as our persistent and familiar challenge. Reaching this moment offers a sense of perspective that perhaps we’ve never really had time to appreciate. But there are invaluable lessons in our story—of that I am certain. Photo by Kimberly Manz

To some of us the 100th anniversary loomed large long before it arrived. For many, many others it had never been on the radar. We tend here toward living in the moment, looking forward and rarely back. But this year our history served as the vehicle for maybe our busiest calendar ever. Every familiar event featured a Centennial theme, and big celebrations highlighted our origin story and its heroes in an unprecedented way.

What’s less obvious is exactly what our history tells us about what comes next. Our founders could scarcely have imagined that great education would cost so much, or extend so far into everyone’s weekly schedules, or take place on such a globally integrated stage—or in many ways have changed so little in 100 years. Such is the paradox of contemporary educational reform. The best way for us to express our gratitude for the heavy lifting, recent and historic, so fundamental to our school narrative, is to be inventors and explorers in teaching and learning, in pursuit of what works best. That mission brings us full circle to the earliest days on this campus—it really stands the test of time. Here’s to all the helpers who authored the remarkable stories in this yearly volume, and here’s to the continuing promise that our best is still ahead. nn

Annual Report 2014-2015

In fiscal year 2015, July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015, philanthropic support helped USN continue its commitment to academic excellence and innovation. USN raised annual gifts (unrestricted and restricted), endowment, and capital funds to support the school, its faculty and students, and programs. Annual gifts provide a critical 6% of USN’s operating budget as well as designated funding for program and departmental needs. Capital and program gifts make possible facility renovations and expansions, including the grand new entrance and restoration of our original 1925 building. Endowment support secures the future and USN’s continued excellence. The pages of this Annual Report tell stories of how your financial support and generosity make something exceptional happen every day at 2000 Edgehill Avenue. Each gift and each donor are an important part of One School. Our Future. A Campaign for University School of Nashville. We are grateful for the gifts and commitments within these totals: Annual Giving

began this Centennial year by cutting the ribbon and opening our new 19th Avenue entrance to our renovated building. The Centennial Building Project gave us 42,000 square feet of renovated space and 7,700 square feet of new space. If you have been on campus this year, you’ve noticed the changes in the Cheek Gym, the restored pool (now salt water), the stunning admissions office, and the inviting school store.

The end of the Centennial year marks a turning point for University School, and now with Vince Durnan’s leadership we focus our attention on what comes next, our second century of educational leadership. We’re counting on the entire USN community to join our campaign One School. Our Future.

Years of behind the scenes work by the Building and Grounds Committee made this project a success. The other volunteers who helped make this project possible include the parent committee working to help fund it. Their success is reflected in the remarkable $5.6 million that more than 1,800 donors gave to USN this year. This Annual Report documents a strong year of philanthropy for USN.

We will provide resources for the four priorities identified in years of discussion and planning: increasing our endowment, restoring our campus, investing in academic innovation, and sustaining our annual giving. Over the next two years, we aim to complete this $28,000,000 campaign, allowing us to fulfill these objectives.

But as we look back on 2014-2015, most of us will remember the Centennial celebration, from that festive ribbon-cutting popsicle party in August until the birthday extravaganza in May. With Teri Doochin Kasselberg ’73

As this Annual Report reveals, we have already made substantial progress toward meeting that goal. We’re confident that, with your help, the future we envision for University School of Nashville will become possible. nn

Teachers Begin University Collaborations Thanks to the Edward E. Ford Foundation, a Leadership Challenge Grant will help us build a curricular design bridge from secondary school to college by organizing, funding, and sharing projects born of partnerships between USN high school faculty and their counterparts at Vanderbilt University just across the street. This generous grant was awarded in spring 2014 and matched by Barry and Leslie Schatten Stillman ’75, parents of Kevin ’01, Megan ’04, and Jared ’08. These curricular partnerships will continue for 5 summers. In the summer of 2015, a group of five high school teachers began their collaborations with Vanderbilt professors. Getting Students Ready College Preparation for High School Students: Lessons in Privilege and Diversity C. André Christie-Mizell, Associate Professor of Sociology, Vanderbilt University, and Matthew Haber, high school history, USN For most students, college life is the most diverse environment they have faced. Students arrive at college with strong opinions about privilege, race, gender, sexual orientation, and social class, but often without the vocabulary and social finesse to discuss these issues. Difficulty related to these issues can be isolating for students inside and outside the classroom. Easily accessible materials for high school students tend to focus on only one aspect of diversity—race. The collaborators aim to develop resources to help teachers equip students with the tools to successfully express themselves around sensitive issues in ways that promote healthy self-concept and

academic success in college. Christie-Mizell and Haber plan to produce a curated library of free materials and lesson plans for modules on: Social and Personal Identities, Social Constructs, Privilege, Race-Ethnicity, Gender, Sexual Orientation, and Class. Our Horizons Partners USN

completed the second year of its partnership with Horizons National, a network of summer programs for low-income public school students that aims to help close the achievement gap for these children. USN Horizons supports children from Carter Lawrence Elementary School who will stay with us throughout their elementary and middle school years. Each year we will add a grade level of 15 students until the program serves 120 rising first through eighth graders. Last summer’s kindergarten children are this year’s first grade class. Led by Kim Avington, veteran USN fourth grade teacher, USN’s program is the first in Tennessee. Horizons students spend six weeks here each summer engaged in a program that blends high quality academics taught by experienced teachers with cultural enrichment (such as art, music, drama, and field trips) and confidence-building activities such as swimming lessons for every child. Students are given an opportunity to attend for eight consecutive summers. Summer learning loss leaves low-income students as much as three years behind their higher income peers by the time they reach fifth grade. In contrast, Horizons students gain an average of two to three months in reading and math skills during the six-week summer program, keeping them at grade level or above. In addition to Kim Avington, USN staff includes kindergarten teachers Jan Honsberger and Christy Plummer, second grade teacher Victoria Roca, and literacy specialist Aviva Wasserman, joined by Tempest Covington and Ida Fields, teachers at Carter Lawrence. Sam Jackson, USN’s Annual Fund Director, is the site administrator.

USN’s Horizons program is self-funded and advised by a board of community leaders and educators. nn

dedicated and loyal group of donors leads the way in Annual Fund giving each year. Their support of the Annual Fund attests to the value of a USN education and helps establish a strong culture of philanthropy here. Combined contributions of $1,915 or greater totaled more than $1 million in 2014-2015, representing more than 71% of the Annual Fund. This generosity and leadership make a daily difference in the lives of our students and teachers, helping ensure the school’s financial strength each year. Thank you for leading by example. nn

Teaching Freshmen to Write This

summer Katie Greenebaum, about to begin a new assignment of teaching English to freshmen, sought some guidance on the best way to teach writing to students that age. She explains what she did: As I prepared last spring to embark on my new role as ninth grade English teacher and co-creator of our new ninth grade curriculum, I realized I wanted to know more about current best standards in writing instruction. I chose to attend an AP Summer Institute in Literature and Composition, hoping to benefit from the College Board’s extensive research into current college English curricula and standards, as well as from the years of experience of the other conference attendees. I headed off to hot Austin in late July for what turned out to be a great week of learning and thinking, returning to school with many resources to use and share. The course’s focus on rhetorical analysis of short non-fiction texts yielded ideas for both reading materials and approaches to teaching close reading and analytical writing.

Frank & Gwen Gordon Family Faculty Development Fund Katie Greenebaum

Last week, for example, the freshmen learned a new system for annotating and applied it to a short personal essay by Annie Dillard as well as to selections from their summer reading texts. Next, we will learn to turn these marginal notes into a short essay analyzing Dillard’s rhetorical strategies. My colleagues Dana Mayfield, Justin Karpinos, and I are excited to incorporate more material and strategies as we continue to enrich our approach to our new theme-based, writingcentered curriculum for English 9: Literature of Identity. nn

this page is a list of the most loyal donors in this Annual Report—people whose commitment to University School dates back at least a quarter of a century. Those who have been giving to USN the longest, more than three decades now, are Weaver Barksdale and John and Allis Dale Gillmor, parents of a total of eight alumni, and Samuel Dillard ’56, a PDS alumnus who graduated nearly sixty years ago.

Among the seventeen names of those promoted to the list this year are those of long-time faculty and staff. Bobbie Grubb served as assistant to USN Directors Harvey Sperling, Ed Costello, and Vince Durnan before her retirement in 2014. Norma Miller has been a mainstay of the business office since the earliest days of University School, when our endowment amounted to the hundreds of dollars.

Many of the people listed on this page graduated from Peabody Demonstration School: Priscilla Fitzgerald Bauman ’54, Samuel Dillard ’56, Bob Doochin ’58, Dan Eisenstein ’66, Christopher Heard ’71, Connie Heard ’73, Mary Loventhal Jones ’67, Teri Doochin Kasselberg ’73, Rodney Lister ’69, Caroline Russell Marold ’66, David Miller ’68, Carr Payne ’44, Mike Shmerling ’73, Bonnie Magid Small ’68, Betsy May Stern ’51, and Karen Stratvert ’67.

Fourth grade teacher Nikki Hunt and high school science teacher Bill Rodriguez retired at the end of 2015. Laura Rodriguez still teaches middle school math. In 2015-2016, long-time P.E. department chair Lisa Preston takes on a new role, Lower School Naturalist.

Buhl Lecture Opens Centennial Celebration The

focus of this year’s Buhl Lecture was one that the late Mike Buhl would have found particularly compelling.

A talk by Michael Puett ’82, Walter C. Klein Professor of Chinese History at Harvard University, opened the Centennial birthday party weekend. Professor Puett asked the crowd assembled in the Payne Library Room to open their minds to new ways of thinking about China. Arguing that it’s time for us to become less certain that we have all the answers and more open to other ways of thinking, Professor Puett discussed the Chinese philosophy of education. We can learn from it, he said, without embracing every aspect of it. He thanked USN for its role in his education, singling out Harvey Sperling, who was director when Michael Puett was a student. Mr. Sperling, long interested in Asia, taught one of the first high school classes on China

in Tennessee. (In 1989 Mike Buhl took over Mr. Sperling’s Asian History class thinking it would be a temporary assignment, but it was just the beginning of his time on the USN faculty.) The Buhl Lecture Series was established in 2001 with a grant from the Buhl family “to provide lively, thought-provoking discourse with the potential to cross disciplines and call our students’ full breadth of learning into play.” This year’s talk by Professor Puett fit the bill. nn

Endowments Endowments make the most powerful and lasting impact on our institution. Held in perpetuity, these funds generate support for scholarships, faculty excellence, educational programs, and facility enhancements and maintenance. Endowments are USN’s permanent “savings account,” prudently invested to grow over time. A small portion of the fund’s earnings paid out on an annual basis is used to help operate the school. We are grateful to those listed in the following pages who, by establishing these named funds, have shown a profound degree of commitment to the mission of University School of Nashville. Their dedication and planning help secure the school’s future. How does a strong endowment help USN? A gift for endowment demonstrates a long-term commitment to USN and links past, current, and future generations. A strong endowment enables USN to maintain and enhance the quality of education in perpetuity.

General Endowment Funds

These general endowment funds provide long-term financial support for USN’s people, programs, and facilities. They are intended to ensure the school’s excellence for generations to come, by helping attract and retain inspiring teachers, supporting learning opportunities within and beyond our classrooms, and improving access to USN for talented students from all backgrounds. Crumbo Family Endowment Fund

What is the value of USN’s endowment? Our endowment is under conscientious management of the investment committee of USN’s Board of Trustees. At $15,717,114 as of June 30, 2015, USN’s endowment is relatively modest compared to that of our local and national peer schools. How can a gift be made to USN’s endowment? Named funds can be established for gifts that meet specific thresholds for scholarships, faculty development, programs, or facilities. Such endowments, which may bear your name or your family’s, reflect your interests and serve as an enduring testament to your generosity.

Why We Flip A

“flipped classroom” is one in which students watch short lecture videos at home and work on various activities during class time, when the teacher is there to answer their questions and offer guidance. As middle school science teacher Rebecca Jennings says, “The flipped classroom enables the students to front load content the night before so that they can apply the concepts in the classroom activities and labs.”

Debbie Davies Endowed Teaching Fund Pamela Malinowski (l.), Rebecca Jennings

This summer Rebecca and her middle school science colleague Pamela Malinowski attended Harvard University’s Ed Tech Teacher conference on classroom flipping. Pamela says she came home with “a renewed energy to try new ideas in my classroom, as well as a variety of tools to try with the flipped classroom method.”

Rebecca adds, “All types of learners can benefit from a flipped classroom. It is a great resource for those who need a second or third explanation of content.” nn

The Conte Bredesen Scholarship Fund

A

generous donation from Phil Bredesen and Andrea Conte has established the Conte Bredesen Scholarship Fund for talented students whose families are unable to afford the cost of a University School education. We welcomed the first Conte Bredesen Scholar to USN this fall.

to deepen its roots in the larger society. I want it to grow as a school for young men and women from all parts of our city who have dreams far bigger than a large paycheck.”

The couple’s relationship with University School began three decades ago, when their son Ben entered first grade. Phil served on the Board of Trustees and chaired the campaign to build the Sperling Center, so it is fitting that this endowment gift is part of our campaign, One School. Our Future. Ben graduated in 1998, went to Brown University, married his classmate Dru Potash, and owns Fat Bottom Brewery.

In Conte’s words, “I admire the effort here to build respect for other people, from other backgrounds.” She values the community partnerships USN is working to establish. “The Carter Lawrence School students sharing experiences with their USN counterparts benefits them both. They learn from each other.”

One of the qualities that Phil and Andrea value about USN is its sense of public purpose. Bredesen emphasized his belief that private schools have “a public role, an obligation to the larger society” as well. And making it possible for a capable student to attend USN is good for that student and for society, he says.

Phil sees a certain parallel to his life. He went to Harvard from a small town where he “had never met anyone who was prominent in the larger world.” When he got to college, meeting a greater variety of people made him “realize that they were made of the same stuff as I was.” As he says, “The way young people see themselves has a lot to do with how their lives turn out.”

The Conte Bredesen Scholarship can give a child the “ingredients for success.” Andrea says, “Too often there are wonderful students with great potential, but who have no idea what education can really be like at this level.” A USN education can offer “the tools to fulfill their dream.” Why USN? Bredesen says, “When you send a child to private school, you worry that they may end up with a sense of privilege, that they are somehow better, that the world owes them something. When Ben was at USN I never felt that. Kids were not led to believe, directly or implicitly, that they were better than other kids. My hope is that USN will continue

Andrea has high hopes for the scholarship fund. She hopes that it will “encourage others to support these students, contributing in any way they want.” And she hopes that the students who benefit will “in their own turn give back to the school so that these opportunities will be there for the next generation as well.” Andrea adds, “USN is moving in a great direction. If you can give a young person not just the tools, but hope and aspiration and the belief that they are worthwhile— that is life-changing.” nn

Sharing Math Ideas |

Last

year I attended a conference called Teaching Contemporary Mathematics at the North Carolina School for Science and Mathematics, where I have often gone to find ways to become a better teacher.

This year I learned more ways to use Geogebra software with my classes. Geogebra is free graphing software that now replaces an expensive program that the math department bought for school use (for faculty and the computer lab). As a result, students can now access the graphing software, along with various scripts, outside of class. At the conference I met several teachers who write scripts and share them; I also met teachers who have developed a large library of scripts they have found for a variety of topics. Just today, I used one

There I consistently meet high caliber math teachers from schools both private and public. Connections I have made through the conference indirectly led to our hiring new high school math teacher Kevin Liu this year. They also broaden my resource network, giving me more sources for inspiration and more people to share ideas with. The conference is a strong source of renewal for me and keeps me interested in instructional topics as well as a more global view of math instruction.

that helped students see the connections between periodic functions and their mathematical underpinnings. The discussion that resulted motivated great questions and produced a strong understanding of concepts. Additionally, I learned more about calculator programming and ways to incorporate it into the math curriculum. Exposing students to programming is a primary goal of the math department this year. I’m grateful to the Hazel Lundberg Faculty Endowment for allowing me this opportunity. nn

From The Alumni Board | Just

over a year ago, USN opened its new entrance to celebrate the past and welcome with modern momentum a new century of learning. It has been a busy and exciting year for our alumni as we celebrated our 100th Birthday. More than 500 of us visited USN this year, bringing with us memories, talents, and genuine gratitude for receiving a PDS/USN education. In September, Vince Durnan began his travels to visit with alumni in eight major cities. These evening events allow alumni to catch up on the news from USN and connect with each other.

Our National Alumni Board of Visitors gathered in early November, coincidentally arriving just in time to see the high school perform Pippin. Meeting the next day, they enjoyed the year in review, the Centennial Campaign update, report on faculty initiatives, a student panel, and an overview of the K-12 curricular mapping project. April brought us “showers” of gifts as we embarked on our alumni 36 Hour Give Back Challenge. 140 alumni participated, and thanks to our challenge donor from the Class of ’65, contributions totaled $17,000.

24

Derek McLaren ’87, President In early May, at the culmination of the year-long Centennial celebration, we convened a panel of Distinguished Alumni. Jim Coddington ’70, Greg Downs ’89, Amy Kurland ’73 and Gideon Yu ’89 drew a crowd for their wideranging discussion. Soon after this event, our newest Distinguished Alumna arrived on campus. At Convocation Kimberly Steadman ’93, Co-Director of the Brooke Charter Schools in Boston, delivered a motivating speech on the “power of gratitude” to 96 seniors.

We concluded this remarkable year with an all-alumni “Prom Re-do” party planned by co-chairs Tory Fitzgibbon ’86 and Chris Chamberlain ’85. 150 alumni filled Cheek Gym, dancing to decade hits and enjoying favorite dishes from old neighborhood restaurants. The next morning 200 alumni celebrating their reunions enjoyed brunch in the auditorium and reconnected with old friends. It doesn’t get any better than this, and I have had the pleasure of being a part of it, working alongside Jennifer Simmons McGugin ’96 (VicePresident) and the rest of the Alumni Board. nn

Looking in the Mirror: Reunion 2015 | High

School Reunion is like looking in the mirror. Your reflection is you surrounded by those who shared a time in your life of such youth, such growing pains, so many dreams, some agonies probably, some defeats, and hopefully many sweet memories. For the Class of ’65 this year, our reflection was 50 years old. . . 50 years! We looked to find the familiar amidst the extra pounds, gray hairs, and worn wrinkles, and there it was. . . in the eyes, the voice, the smile, the funny gesture. The Reflection brought us home. As the 2015 Reunion classes prepared and convened for their time together, some classmates just knew they would go, no matter what. Others had some scheduling conflicts and weren’t sure they could make it. But many had no interest, or did not want to ‘go back’ to a time that might not have been all that good for them. This is probably not that unusual. But the Reflection in the Mirror, as it turns out, was so bright with unconditional acceptance, warm renewals, and some newly discovered connections that those missing were truly missed. While the Reflection felt incomplete without all of our classmates, 1955 the Reunion of classes, the Return to PDS/USN, and the 21% Remembering of all the stories and all the characters felt full. So many things that mattered so much in high school no longer mattered. Reunion seems to wash those away and embrace who we have all become, just happy to be alive and well enough to share our 1950 past years among those who “knew us when” and can laugh about it, along with a few tears 13% for some struggles along the way. Truly, a time to reflect.

The changes in the school are profound after 50 years, and the potential for more growth is embedded in the USN spirit today. The exciting current of what is and what will be and could be is what opened my eyes to return, to reflect, and to reunite with my class. My wish is that many of you will also return, reflect, and reunite as the years go by so that OUR school can thrive and bring the joy and experiences of a truly fulfilling education to children for many years to come. While any increase qualifies for recognition, we encourage you to consider 5% as a sustainable commitment that is significant over time. In its twelfth year, 1,056 donors joined the McCharen Society by increasing their gifts or by giving to USN for the first time. We’re especially pleased to note that 437 of these are PDS or USN alumni.

Alumni Exceed Goal in 36-Hour Give Back Challenge

In

the centennial year, our goal in just a day and a half was for 100 alumni to honor their favorite teachers and coaches with a gift to the school. Instead, more than 140 alumni took part in the Centennial 36-Hour Challenge, contributing more than $12,000 and honoring favorite former teachers. A special thank you goes to our challenge donor from the 50th reunion class. That challenge contribution of $5,000 increased our total to more than $17,000 raised through this year’s 36-Hour Giving Challenge. nn

Celebrating a Way of Life with Puppets by Emily Holt

Helen Meador Travel Fellowship

Thanks

to the Helen Meador Travel Grant, I attended a 10 day Processional Puppet workshop in the tiny Alpine village of Morinesio, Italy, in the Maira Valley. The puppet workshop was led by two master puppeteers, Alex Kahn and Sophia Michahelles of Processional Arts Workshop. I learned how to build large-scale puppets, some 12 to 15 feet tall, as well as masks, banners, lanterns and musical instruments for the procession. I also learned about organizing an interactive community event. The puppet procession celebrates and preserves the Occitan culture.

Procession themes, based on oral histories, folklore, and agrarian rituals, grow out of dialogue with villagers. Children of the village helped us create the puppets in time for the procession. Two celebrations ended the workshop: a night-time Procession of Light and the Midsummer Pageant the following day. The Procession of Light was a serene walk to the cliff-side Church of Santa Maria, illuminated entirely by handmade lanterns. Musicians played accordions and people sang as we gathered. The Midsummer Pageant the following afternoon was raucous and festive. The giant puppets were brought to life by the workshop participants and hundreds of local residents. Traditional Occitan musicians led the way through the same path we took the night before. I am thankful to have had this experience and excited to bring everything I learned to my classes and the USN community.

Where Are They Now | A Report on the Malone Scholars A

decade ago, a $2,000,000 gift from the Malone Foundation endowed a scholarship program at USN for academically talented students in grades seven through twelve with financial need. Since then, fourteen Malone Scholars have graduated from University School, with seven studying here in 2014-2015.

“Thirteen years at USN gave me a strong academic foundation that I regularly rely on in college.”

At the end of this academic year, we asked the Malone graduates what they’ve been up to since they left USN. Here are some highlights from what they told us. Universities attended include Boston University, Brown University, Harvard University (two students), Harvey Mudd College, Indiana University, New York University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Stanford University, Vanderbilt University, and Yale University (two students). Majors include Political Science; Business, Engineering, and Organizations (with a focus in Organizational Sociology); Public and International Affairs; History; Journalism.

Program for Human Rights at Yale; being part of an improv team in New York City, spending a semester in Paris writing a play, and working as a summer script intern at Conan; summer neuroscience research.

Languages learned in college (in many cases with significant time spent abroad) include French, German, and Arabic (one student); Chinese and Arabic (one student); Arabic; Chinese.

Fascinating fields of study and internships include work at the Tennessee Justice Center; interning at the Responsible Endowments Coalition; studying at Fudan University in China; being a summer associate at a large New York law firm; working with a youth cooperative in Tanzania for a month; interning at the Center for Refugees and Immigrants of Tennessee and participating in the Special Academic

Extracurricular activities include editor of the Journal of Law and Social Problems at Columbia University Law School; program director of Princeton’s radio station and member of an improv comedy group; Yale Refugee Project; Kuumba Singers of Harvard College, Harvard College Running Club, and The Black Men’s Forum; Mixed Company of Yale (a cappella group). Those who have graduated from college have gone on (to name a few) to attend law school at Columbia University; work at Responsible Endowments Coalition; join Teach for America in Louisiana; join Teach for China in a tiny village school in Yunnan province. Here are comments from several of the former Malone Scholars reflecting on how they have benefited. “I believe that my experience at USN made it possible for me to attend a great college and law school.” “Attending and graduating from USN had an immeasurable impact on my life. As a teacher in one of the consistently lowest-ranked education systems in the country, I constantly think back to how incredibly fortunate I was to receive the education I did at USN.”

“I reflect a lot on successes and challenges, though they’ve just begun, and am always thankful for the generosity shown to me by organizations like the Malone Scholars program. A quality education for all students regardless of background across local communities, our country, and our earth is essential to growth!” “I’m so grateful to the Malone Foundation for making my amazing USN education (and as a result my Yale education as well) possible.” “Thirteen years at USN gave me a strong academic foundation that I regularly rely on in college.” nn

This is another record for USN, demonstrating the commitment and generosity of the USN community. The newly introduced flexibility to designate pledges and contributions to specific programs was a welcome change in the eyes of many donors. Thanks, also, to Anne Westfall and Sam Jackson in the Development Office. USN is fortunate to have outstanding management resources who make every effort to educate our USN community on the importance of financial support far beyond tuition dollars. We have been honored to serve USN in fundraising this year. Jane and Erich Groos now have the baton for the year ahead. They have tremendous experience with the Annual Fund, having served previously as Leadership Chairs and 13 Year Chairs. nn

The McCharen Society p The McCharen Society recognizes those who increase their gift to USN’s Annual Fund from the previous year. This donor distinction is named for Knox McCharen, Director of PDS from 1951-1968 and one of the school’s most beloved leaders. 5

Following Caesar’s Footsteps Knowing

“Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres,” the famous beginning of Julius Caesar’s De Bello Gallico, isn’t much help if you plan to take the Advanced Placement Latin exam. Since 2013 the Latin AP has tested students’ knowledge of Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic Wars as well as of Vergil’s The Aeneid, once its sole focus.

Clayton Family Endowment Fund Diane Sorrell

This change inspired AP Latin teacher Diane Sorrell to travel to Gaul to study with a group of other Latin teachers and scholars. Luckily for Diane, Gaul has become southern France. The group spent a week in A ix- e n - Prove n c e, then went to Burgundy and Lyon the second week.

The program featured lectures and seminars by Latin scholars, Luca Grillo from UNC Chapel Hill and Christopher Krebs from Stanford. Diane says, “Both were remarkably fine teachers; and we were most fortunate in that they had both taught high school in the past.” The group visited sites important in the Gallic Wars as well as other Roman ruins.

With “multiple class sessions throughout the days and evenings” interspersed with walking tours featuring Latin readings and visits to Roman ruins and museums, it was a “packed and informative two weeks” culminating in a trip to the site of Alesia (now Alise-Sainte-Reine), where the final battle of the Gallic Wars occurred. The Latin teachers witnessed a demonstration of Roman and Gallic fighting techniques at the museum there. Diane says, “The most important benefit of this course will be how it enriches my teaching of the Caesar component of the AP course; I’ve learned a lot more about the history of the period, about the geography and tribes of Gaul, and about the literary composition of De Bello Gallico. However, a lot of this information is also working its way into other classes, as Julius Caesar is such a pivotal figure in Roman history.” nn

University School of Nashville

University School of Nashville Association As

I reflect on USN’s 100th year, I’m proud to have been a part of our Centennial Celebration. In true fashion, our community came together and filled more than 1,000 USNA fundraising, service and community-building volunteer slots. The payoff: our fundraising efforts netted $152,123. Fall Book Frenzy sales hit a new high, Music Night featuring USN parent Dierks Bentley doubled the dollars raised in years past, beloved fundraisers Artclectic and Evening Classes contributed significantly, and Bonus Bucks made a nice gift to program initiatives across all divisions. Booster clubs, Tiger Arts Patrons (TAP) and Tiger Club, added members and raised significant dollars for our arts and athletic programs. Tiger Club also donated an additional $5,000 in concessions proceeds to the clubs and teams that staffed the concessions stands. USNA also furnished our beautiful new office, helped purchase a floor covering for events held in the Sperling and Cheek Gyms, paid the balance due on the River Campus concessions trailer, printed the school directory and Centennial year calendar, and funded our Caring and Concern, Faculty Appreciation, and Parent Gatherings programs. It all adds up to an impressive $199,513 invested in our school.

Equally important are the service activities and events that strengthen our community. With 200 members, Dads’ Alliance has become a vital part of USNA, from grilling dinner for the 600 Fall Fest attendees to heeding the call whenever volunteers are needed. In addition, USNA: l Recruited lower school room parents, middle school advisory parents, and coordinated Helping Hands assistance in the classrooms. l Organized grade-level parent socials, assisted in the Art Department and the Library, and cared for families via our Caring and Concern program. l Hosted breakfasts and luncheons for the faculty and staff, provided snacks for Parents’ Nights, and pulled off another Grandparents’ Day celebration. l Welcomed new parents at the High School New Parent Coffee and helped with the 8th Grade Breakfast. l Assisted the Director of Diversity in highlighting the school’s rich diversity. None of it would have happened without every single volunteer and the assistance of our wonderful faculty and staff! Looking ahead, USNA is fortunate to have the capable Katie Crumbo taking the helm. As for me, serving alongside so many dedicated parents, faculty/staff members, alumni, and students in this Centennial year has been an unparalleled volunteer experience, and one for which I’m deeply grateful. nn With sincere appreciation, Holly Roche USNA President 2014-2015

The McCharen Society p The McCharen Society recognizes those who increase their gift to USN’s Annual Fund from the previous year. This donor distinction is named for Knox McCharen, Director of PDS from 1951-1968 and one of the school’s most beloved leaders. 5

Buffalo Ranch to Warner Park

One

day last year kindergarten teacher Lauren Hagan and her class were returning to school from a Naturalist’s Journey to USN’s River Campus wetlands. Lauren asked Lower School Naturalist Cynthia Lee how she could become a better naturalist. Cynthia suggested that Lauren take a summer course at the Yellowstone Institute, and Lauren signed up for a “Yellowstone Naturalist Experience” at the remote Lamar Buffalo Ranch in Yellowstone National Park.

Quaker Hill Lauren says, “The course gave me a renewed Summer Professional understanding of the big picture. Simply put, the geology, climate, and elevation of an area affect Development Fund the plants that grow there. The plants, in turn, deLauren Hagan termine which herbivores inhabit the region. And finally, which herbivores are hanging around determines which carnivores stalk the area. All this is affected by the seasons.” “I also got to see thousands of bison, 3 wolves, 5 black bears, elk, mountain goats, birds, plants, geysers, waterfalls, steam vents, hot springs, and much, much more. Some mornings I had to wait for bison to move out of the path so I could make it to the galley for breakfast.” Just as expected, Lauren has become a better naturalist. The skills she learned at Yellowstone are easily applied to observation in middle Tennessee. Lauren says, “Since I’ve returned to Nashville, I’ve been working to learn at least one new plant or bird on every hike and making sure, of course, to record my findings.” nn
