second and third places began reaching me, and this was looking to be a good day – Clifden Comhaltas were sweeping the boards in most competitions, with first places in all the main competitions at all ages. It was amazing – a

branch that started just five years ago was up and winning with the big branches. Saturday afternoon and Sunday saw the group and band competitions. All bands and groups played brilliantly, and I knew that they had done all they could do. And then the results

started – Clifden, first place in 12-15 Grupa Ceol; first in 12-15 Ceili Band; first in 15-18 Grupa Cheoil; first in 1518 Ceili Band; first in Senior Grupa Ceol. A full clean sweep! It was just unbelievable: 73 first place county medals and five trophies in groups and

bands alone, and 57 solo medals and around 30 solo trophies – 130 medals in total! Celebrations began, and are still going. Clifden music sessions could be heard all over the school, which is a norm for us at this stage when we go to the fleadh – we just want to play music!

It was a proud weekend for the branch and all its young members and it’s great to think they all go forward to the Connaught Fleadh in Castlebar on the weekend of July 5. The joke of the weekend was how we would manage to get all the trophies and cups home, and

that we should have brought a trailer. It’s not often that a group of musicians will have this level of success at a fleadh, and it was a day for us to cherish. The branch will hold a celebration night after the Leaving and Junior certificates are completed.

John’s years of service honoured Clifden man John G Walsh was honoured recently by Comhaltas as one of Galway’s most dedicated traditional music enthusiasts. To mark the organisation’s 60th anniversary, a number of people from each county were selected for a special award in recognition of their years of service to Comhaltas and traditional music. A spokeswoman for Clifden Comhaltas said: ‘We were delighted with the news, as John was a founding member of the branch back in the early 1980s and a founding member when it started again in 2009. ‘John is synonymous with music in Clifden and further afield. He is well known on the music festival and fleadh scene all over Ireland and has kept music alive here in Clifden for many years.’

An All Ireland Fleadh runner up in 1987, the Clifden branch said it was ‘lovely to see [John’s] music and work being recognised. He is an active member of our branch here again, and very deserving of this award.’ l Pictured: Peadar Brick (chairman Galway CCE), John G Walsh and Vince Jordan (president of Comhaltas)
