A note from the managing director

Welcome to the latest Connections Magazine! We’re glad it found its way to you.

Every article, every photograph and every meticulously curated page is a testament to our unwavering commitment to showcase the pinnacle of luxury and celebrate the diverse tapestry of the world around us.

It’s fair to say we’ve experienced another year at warp speed, with innovation galloping forward at an unfathomable pace. As a result we find ourselves standing at the precipice of boundless potential.

Yet, amid this whirlwind of technological marvels, we are reminded of a simple truth: it is through travel, through connection with the real world, that we find the very essence of what it is to truly live. Creating lifelong memories for ourselves and for our clients is a worthy cause, if not one of the most worthy.

Thank you, members of the Connections Community, for your continued support. We are maintaining our focus on reinvestment into the community to bring more value and be as useful as possible to the industry. Recent endeavours include the launch of events in enchanting locations, the warm welcome of new Connections team members, the introduction of our new community platform, and groundbreaking projects in collaboration with world-leading tourist boards.

Normally I drop a hint on what’s to come. We would like to smooth the transition between a meeting, client communication and booking. We feel we might be able to help here. More to come.

A huge thank you – any contribution to improving your business is what gets us up in the morning!

I’ll leave you with this: do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Add to this a flourishing lifestyle culture of gourmet restaurants, exclusive resorts and high-end shopping and you have a luxury landscape that is impossible to resist.

BORACAY

Why travel? Crowned the top island in Asia by Conde Nast Traveler's 2022 Readers' Choice Awards, Boracay is a centrally located island that is easily accessible from Manila. Measuring just 4 miles long, it is a haven for water sports aficionados, with excellent windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkelling options. While golf lovers can enjoy a luxurious 18-hole course, the pièce de résistance is the dreamy White Beach, which teems with trendy hotels, bars and restaurants. At night, parts of the beach come alive with live music and scintillating fire dancers. In contrast, its northern tip — known as Station 1 — is a cradle of opulence, offering sumptuous resorts with private beaches, nestled discreetly amid a leafy coastline.

What is it known for? Easily living up to its hype, Boracay is at its full glory when the sun melts into the azure waters. Indulge in a magical sunset cruise on a private yacht and take in the glorious views with a glass of champagne in hand. Many sailings offer hors d'oeuvres and charcuterie to go with your exploration of the island’s scenic wonders. Returning ashore, your quest for fine living is emphatically met. The Indigo Restaurant at Discovery Shores Boracay provides a five-star dining experience against the backdrop of the white-sand beach, while Rima at Shangri-La's Boracay Resort & Spa offers Italian gourmet cuisine in a treetop setting. annsetholidays.com.ph

BOHOL

Why travel? Picture an oval-shaped mainland ringed by 72 charming smaller islands. This is Bohol, the 10th-largest Philippine island and a favourite of luxury travellers. Nestled in the heart of Central Visayas, it invites you with a constellation of ivory-white beaches, cultural delights and exclusive resorts. You’ll be impressed by its marine life, which includes dolphin spotting near Pamilacan Island and exploring the vibrant coral gardens of Panglao, Balicasag and Cabilao Islands.

The island of Panglao oozes tropical glamour, with an exquisite nightlife, world-class restaurants and scuba diving spots. While Alona Beach is undoubtedly the more popular and upscale attraction, the smaller Panglao Beach is a 200-metre stretch of coconut trees and dreamlike sunsets.

What is it known for? At the top of every must-see list in Bohol are the iconic Chocolate Hills. Over 1,000 cone-shaped hills change colour with the seasons, resembling chocolate mounds in the dry season, and lush green landscapes in the wet season. Head to the viewing deck of Chocolate Hills Complex from where you’ll witness the most stunning 360-degree view of these hills. Another way to enjoy the scenery is by taking a private cruise down the Loboc River, where you can dine in a floating restaurant, flanked by rainforests and waterfalls. intas.ph

CEBU

Why travel? This island province is a symphony of dewy white-sand beaches, luxury hotels and magnificent rolling hills. Its capital, Cebu City, is the oldest city in the Philippines and the second-most populous. For lovers of history, it offers a beguiling deep-dive. Traces of its Spanish colonial times permeate the language, cuisine and traditions. Immerse yourself in the rich heritage at Casa Gorordo Museum, where you can marvel at household artefacts dating back to the late1800s. Explore the well-preserved San Diego Ancestral House in the oldest part of the city, brimming with antique treasures and traditional furniture.

What is it known for? Unplug from the rigours of everyday life with a visit to the exquisite Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa, which boasts a 350-metre whitesand beachfront. At Chi, The Spa, experience premium wellness using traditional therapies which harmonise the elements of your body. Book an overnight stay in a deluxe seaview suite at Dusit Thani Mactan, which opens on to jaw-dropping vistas of Magellan Bay. At its Namm Spa, indulge in specially curated treatments such as the Thai Heritage Therapy and Urban Life Retreat.

For a more exhilarating time, book a private tour and go scuba-diving with majestic whale sharks in Oslob. Many tours include guided canyoneering voyages, a visit to the shifting sandbars of Sumilon island, and the gorgeous Kawasan waterfalls. universalholidays.com

CORON

Why travel? Coron is nothing less than a heavenly retreat. It is located in the north of the Palawan Province, which was recognised as the ‘most desirable island’ at the Wanderlust Travel Awards 2022. Coron mesmerises you with its remarkable Second World War wreck diving sites, stunning rock formations and impossibly clear waters. Discover the awe-inspiring beauty of Kayangan Lake, hailed as one of the purest lakes in the Philippines.

Known as The Blue Lagoon, it’s nestled amid towering limestone formations, creating a serene and secluded atmosphere. Indulge in the soothing Maniquit Hot Springs or witness an enchanting sunset from the summit of Mt Tapyas.

What is it known for? Lounge comfortably in a private yacht and tour all the wondrous sights of the island at your own pace. Plunge into the turquoise waters at Skeleton Wreck and snorkel to the ruins of a Second World War Japanese supply ship. Cruising through Kayangan Lake, you’ll be gobsmacked by how clear the water is. Afterwards, head to the famed Two Seasons ec0conscious luxury island resort, which is also a sanctuary for giant clams and turtles. Bask in beautiful sunsets with a cocktail in hand at its stylish, reef-themed Bahura Bar. Sulu Restaurant expresses culinary artistry with a menu of local and continental favourites — all of it elevated by a panoramic ocean-facing backdrop. universalholidays.com

EL NIDO

Why travel? A more touristy draw in Palawan, El Nido is a gateway to explore the picturesque Bacuit Archipelago — a collection of 45 unique islands and islets with breathtaking geological formations. Get up close with nature at the glamping resorts and hotels scattered across the island. These accommodations seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living, allowing you to appreciate the magnificent vistas of untouched beaches, and dramatic cliffs — while indulging in the comforts and luxuries of a five-star resort.

What is it known for? Live out your tropical fantasy with an enthralling journey on a luxurious speedboat, offering VIP treatment, and discover the hidden treasures of the island. Relish every moment of bliss as you relax on comfy bean bags or a trampoline, sipping cocktails while embracing the gentle sea breeze. Besides exploring secluded lagoons tucked behind imposing limestone cliffs, you can go swimming, snorkelling, and hiking through verdant jungles. For an even more one-of-a-kind adventure, make your way aboard a traditional paraw, a Filipino sailboat. Decorated with ethnic carvings and modern rigging, its rustic charm is priceless.

Tokyo IT'S TIME FOR

Tokyo’s enduring appeal for travellers lies in its utter uniqueness, its visionary modernity blended with ancient culture, and the sense that, if you can imagine something, it’s waiting for you in the Japanese capital. Ask any local for their must-sees, and you’ll get a different answer. But for luxury travellers who are finally visiting this mesmerising destination for the first time, here’s what they shouldn’t leave without experiencing.

The magical metropolis is welcoming luxury travellers once again for a city break like no other

Only in Tokyo

The urban jungle that is Tokyo’s central Shibuya district is home to the iconic Shibuya Crossing and SHIBUYA SKY, a 360-degree open-air observation deck providing an unmissable photo opportunity. Close by is the Shinjuku district, a neon-lit cacophony of clubs, karaoke bars and quirky themed cafés, together with the staggering Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, a 48-storey hotel and entertainment complex.

Landmarks with wow-factor views from the top include the Eiffel Tower-inspired Tokyo Tower in the city’s Minato district, which sparkles each night with light displays (the perfect end to a day of exploring). TOKYO SKYTREE protrudes 634 metres into the sky above the Sumida district and hosts regular events and bespoke experiences at the top, such as yoga classes. Close by is Tokyo’s Asakusa district, where you’ll find the city's oldest temple - the colourful, seventh-century Senso-ji Buddhist temple - and the historic Nakamise shopping street for souvenirs and snacks.

Ginza is the district for high-end shopping in Tokyo’s designer stores, punctuated by swanky cocktail stops. Meanwhile, Akihabara, affectionately known as the “geek district” is the place to shop for video games, anime, manga and all manner of gadgets.

Mind-blowing culinary and cultural experiences

Japan’s pioneering art scene combines futuristic tech, tradition and expansive concepts that will resonate with inquisitive minds.

Tokyo’s teamLab Planets art collective creates 360-degree visual masterpieces, comprising interactive screens with a changing kaleidoscope of imagery that burst to life as someone walks through the space. While this exhibit, currently based on the manmade island of Toyosu in Tokyo Bay, will close in December 2023, its sister project, the popular teamLab Borderless exhibit, will relocate to Azabudai Hills, a new urban village coming to central Tokyo.

The Sumida Hokusai Museum celebrates the legacy of the eponymous Ukiyo-e artist, (a Japanese art form using woodblock prints, which emerged during Japan’s Edo period). Ukiyo-e translates as “paintings of the floating world”, named after their subject matter - such as sumo wrestlers and geishas - associated with impermanence and detachment from ordinary life.

Toyosu Market gives visitors a glimpse of daily life at a wholesale food market, complete with an observation deck for watching tuna auctions take place, several sea-to-table restaurants and a rooftop garden with a lawn.

Meanwhile, the narrow streets of Tsukiji Outer Market are lined with tiny eateries and tea rooms where travellers can stop as they please to try sushi, seafood and ramen, and browse for next-level kitchenware.

Hama-rikyu Gardens is a beautiful park with seawater

ponds, a teahouse on an island and signature Japanese foliage including maple and ginkgo trees. It’s the place to be during cherry-blossom season from late March to early April, and for admiring the beautiful autumn colours during November and December.

Luxury boltholes in the heart of the city

Tokyo’s five-star hotel offering embodies imaginative concepts and calming, contemporary design that maximises captivating views of the city’s skyline.

Overlooking Tokyo Bay, the stylish Conrad Tokyo has exquisite fine-dining restaurants and bars with floor-to-ceiling windows, plus a full-service spa with a 25-metre pool. Opened in 2020, the 206-room The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon interweaves “jungles, Buddhist temples and rainbow gems”, with more than 500 plants blooming in its hotel, and 15 of its serene guest rooms come complete with plant-filled terraces. Grand Hyatt Tokyo in the upscale Roppongi Hills area has an excellent selection of restaurants and an urban oasis feel.

Meanwhile, The Capitol Hotel Tokyu has modern Japanese architectural features in its rooms and public spaces - such as shoji paper screens and natural materials - and a garden with a water feature. Luxury boutique brand Trunk is set to open its third Tokyo property in September 2023, with 25 rooms and a heated rooftop infinity pool overlooking the peaceful Yoyogi Park.

Ganny Akbar

Assistant Director of Sales

Indonesia Japan

A day in the life.

I am responsible for driving revenue growth, developing and implementing the sales strategy to meet the changing market conditions. I also build and maintain relationships to ensure all our clients receive excellent customer service. Lastly, my role requires the management of the team and collaborating with other departments internally.

The meaning of luxury.

For me, luxury means exceptional quality, high value and exceeding expectations. Like a piece of art, luxury is often exclusive and indulgent, evoking powerful emotions and a sense of wonder. Luxury is designed to create a sense of excitement, satisfaction and pleasure that goes beyond the ordinary.

Carving a career in travel.

Firstly, have a genuine passion for travel. Show enthusiasm, positivity and a willingness to go the extra mile to create unforgettable experiences. Develop a strong network and stay up to date with industry trends. Be flexible and adaptable. Stay informed about new travel trends and technologies. The right combination of passion, experience and skills will open many opportunities to succeed in this exciting industry.

Future trends in the Asia-Pacific region.

Sustainability, renewable energy and eco-friendly products will be the future trends in the hospitality industry. This is a huge focus at Capella Ubud as the property is built with minimal impact to the incredible jungles of Ubud where we are located. Apart from that, the Asia-Pacific region is likely to see continued advancements in AI and automation, along with the growth of e-commerce and digital banking. AI could enable more-personalised travel experiences and suggest tailored itineraries based on individual preferences. AI and sustainability initiatives are therefore likely to play a significant role in shaping the future.

A day in the life.

In Japan, office commuters typically live around 50 kilometres from Tokyo and spend about 1 hour and 25 minutes commuting by train. I make productive use of this time by reading news and managing emails. My role encompasses overseeing the global luxury travel trade, international sales, government relations, and engagement with foreign chambers of commerce and overseas associations in Japan. I maintain a meticulously planned weekly schedule filled with meetings, events and interactions with clients and guests. Despite a busy schedule, I find fulfilment in working according to my personal style.

The meaning of luxury.

The word luxury means comfort for the guest as they wait to experience the best amenities and services of the hotel where they are staying. Each property has its own branding in terms of luxury but, most importantly, luxury is about evoking true emotions for the guest that will make them want to return again.

The best booking ever made.

Interestingly, eight years ago, I underwent a minor operation that required hospitalisation. During my week-long stay in a shared hospital room with five other patients, I developed friendships with them. Through my conversations, I successfully promoted our hotel, our dining and our hosting of events at our establishment, despite their lack of prior exposure to it. This unique experience became a memorable and personally accomplished sales opportunity within the confines of my hospitalisation.

Trends in Asia since the resurgence.

The travel trend is moving from the west to the east, with Asia gaining popularity for its exotic destinations like the Maldives and Vietnam’s stunning beaches. Japan’s reopening in October 2022 has made it an attractive destination, offering diverse locations and luxury hotels, making it uniquely appealing to travellers.

VISTERIA LIKHA TRAVEL

India Philippines

A day in the life.

I grew up in an entrepreneurial family, where my father built everything from the start. This upbringing shaped my entrepreneurial attitude, which led to the creation of Visteria, with the help of my wife, Shweta, and my close friends Karan, Nitin, Gaurav and Nischint. My typical day involves starting with morning exercise, sending my kids off to school and then diving into the exciting task of curating luxury travel experiences. Every day in this industry feels like exploring a new destination around the world. I find my work fascinating and it keeps me motivated.

The meaning of luxury.

The interpretation of luxury varies among individuals. In my case, it signifies something truly extraordinary. It is a realm where one experiences a profound sense of ease and comfort, and undoubtedly, an entity that continually surpasses expectations. Above all else, Visteria embodies the essence of luxury in my perspective.

Carving a career in luxury travel.

The best way is to travel, connect and keep up relationships with industry people. One thing that I have learnt over the years in my career is that you need to be able to interact with people. This has to come naturally in order to make people feel comfortable and to be truthful to your work. Lastly, attending travel shows around the world and inspecting the top properties is vital to understand the product truly.

Trends in the Asia-Pacific region.

I feel that people have started travelling more than usual. The trend is for more experiential travel. People want something new at every destination, be it staying in the middle of a jungle or staying in the desert. People look for luxury. Lastly, the spending power of people has increased, which also keeps us on our toes and allows us to keep up with the current trends in the industry.

A day in the life.

One would think that the managing director of a luxury travel agency should really only be the conductor of the travel industry, but I still cannot keep away from the operations side. I love being in the thick of the action and seeing it unravel. As our team continues to expand, my role has given me different exposures to be immersed in different aspects of travel such as attending trade shows. I would have never thought that Connections Philippines 2023 would make it to our shores, but it did, and the near future is very exciting.

The meaning of luxury.

It’s about leaving a lasting memory. You cannot put a price on feelings and remembering something particularly exciting. It’s great to play a part in crafting and providing such a unique recollection for a person that they carry it with them wherever they go. Evoking that human, emotional connection is what luxury is about.

The best booking ever made.

There have been so many, but I feel like one of the best bookings that we made was an amazing Lapland trip that took place during Covid. Despite the challenges that we were unfortunately all too familiar with, our VIPs had a wonderful time. Thanks to our local partners, we privatised Santa Claus’ village for our clients to enjoy and experience. Right after, the clients sent me the video of their young daughter meeting Santa. This moment showed genuine emotions and to see the smile on the little girl’s face was enough to know that the trip will remain with them and with us for so long.

Asian country you would like to see more tourism. Come on, this one is a given for me! The Philippines, for our amazing beaches, islands and hospitality. But as that was too easy and everyone expected that answer, I would like to say Uzbekistan too. The country holds a special place in my heart and I think everyone should visit it.

A MOMENT FOR

Seoul

The rapidly evolving South Korean capital of Seoul is a melting pot of contrasts, where serene Buddhist temples compete with karaoke bars, neon-lit cities vie with mountain views and popular Korean K-Pop and K-Drama culture sit alongside centuries of history.

For the luxury traveller, there’s plenty to see and do, with no less than five Unesco World Heritage Sites to visit including Changdeok Palace, the popular Seoul City Wall – first built in 1396 to defend the city and now a popular walking trail – major modern landmarks such as the Lotte World Tower, the tallest building in South Korea; plus a host of exclusive culinary experiences, designer shopping and time to relax in Korea’s jjimjilbang – traditional bathhouses.

High-end shopping

Something of an institution in Seoul, shopping is as important here as art and culture, with Koreans the world’s biggest spenders on luxury goods.

The best places to shop in Seoul are not limited to shopping malls but spill out across districts, while familyfriendly attractions include aquariums, museums, art galleries, theatres and theme parks.

Myeongdong is one of the city’s most famous neighbourhoods, where colourful boutiques showcase Korean fashion at its brightest. With more than 1,000 shops selling Korean cosmetics, in Myeongdong you’ll be able to stock up on your K-Beauty products.

Myeongdong’s Lotte Department Store offers a duty-free outlet, an art gallery and food court, as well as an impressive range of clothing and beauty products. You can even request that your shopping be delivered to the airport for collection.

Elsewhere, Gangnam is one of the wealthiest districts in South Korea and is home to department stores, underground shopping centres and malls. Here you’ll find international designer brands such as Dior, Miu Miu and Cartier.

Luxury dining

Chef Yim Jungsik has been touted as the pioneer of modern Korean fine dining and is credited for introducing Korean cuisine to the world with his Seoul and New York restaurants.

His Gangnam restaurant Jungsik consistently tops the best restaurant polls, so it’s worth reserving your place before you travel so you can try some of his molecular mastery. Expect artful, playful plates rooted in traditional Korean cooking.

Michelin-starred restaurants Soigné, Gaon and Mingles, also in Gangnam, offer fine-dining takes on traditional Korean staples.

Luxury accommodation

Expect to find hotels with floor-to-ceiling windows offering sensational views over Seoul’s dazzling skyline and the Han River.

Seoul’s luxury hotels boast Michelin-starred restaurants, top spas and contemporary styling from natural minimalist to timeless Korean motifs that pay homage to the city’s century-long legacy in hospitality.

Outside the bustle of the city, hotels offer views of the handsome Gyeongbokgung Palace, the verdant green hills of Samcheong, Bukhansan parks and the tranquil Cheonggyecheon Stream.

A mainstay for Korean celebrities, Seoul’s oldest luxury hotel is set on the slopes of Mount Namsan, offering privacy and unmatched panoramic views of the city. Stay here and you’ll want to indulge in the Guerlain Spa, which combines cosmetic technology from France with grand service from Seoul – prepare to be pampered like royalty.

Experiences

Attractions on a must-see list of any visit to Seoul include the Gyeongbokgung Palace, the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty, and Jogyesa Temple, the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism which dates back to the late-14th century.

There are also many after-dark tours that allow visitors to experience the exciting buzz of Seoul with the chance to eat a traditional Korean barbecue and take in one of the many karaoke bars, jazz lounges and clubs.

Beyond Seoul lie castle towns, seaside resorts, national parks and islands. Jeju Island makes for a popular day trip. It is known for its unique cuisine, most notably the seafood caught by Jeju’s famed female deep-sea divers (haenyeo), all of whom are aged 60-plus.

LUXURY ADVENTURE

in Oman

From the rugged mountains of the Al Hajar range to the rolling sand dunes of the Empty Quarter, Oman is a destination that will appeal to nature lovers and thrill seekers alike. Together with Abundance Tourism, our official DMC partner of Connections Luxury Middle East 2023, we’ve curated a few ideas to make the most of Oman’s luxurious adventures.

Desert Safari

A desert safari in Oman is a must-do activity for any adventure seeker. You will be taken on a 4x4 adventure through the rolling sand dunes of the Empty Quarter, where you can experience the adrenaline rush of dune-bashing, 4x4 biking, sandboarding and even camel riding. After a day of adventure, you can relax in a luxury desert camp and enjoy traditional Omani entertainment and a barbecue dinner under the stars.

Visit Wadi Shab

Wadi Shab is a stunning oasis located in the mountains of Oman. The wadi (valley) is home to a series of pools, waterfalls and lush vegetation, and it’s a popular spot for swimming and hiking. The highlight of the visit is a short swim through a dark cave to reach a hidden waterfall.

Luxury Camping

For a truly unique experience, consider spending a night in a luxury desert camp. These camps offer a high level of comfort and amenities, including air-conditioned tents, en-suite bathrooms and even private pools. You can enjoy traditional Omani entertainment, such as belly dancing and fire shows, and a barbecue dinner under the stars.

Mountain Trekking

The Al Hajar Mountains offer some of the most spectacular trekking opportunities in Oman. You can trek to the summit of Oman’s highest peak, Jabal Shams, or take a guided hike through the scenic Wadi Ghul. The diverse terrain and changing landscapes provide a challenging and rewarding experience, as you hike through rugged peaks, canyons and valleys, and soak up the panoramic views of the wilderness.

Abundance Tourism provides prime luxury services in diverse segments and unique customised packages to suit all your plans. As well as the experiences mentioned above, they also offer city tours, VIP packages, honeymoon and Valentine’s arrangements, wedding planning and MICE. abundancetourism.com

Dhow Cruise

Embark on a journey of discovery and adventure as you sail along Oman’s picturesque coastline on a traditional dhow. Oman’s scenic fjords and secluded beaches are only accessible by boat, so a dhow cruise is the perfect way to explore these hidden gems and perhaps even spot some marine life.

Horse Riding

Start your day with an exhilarating experience by going horse riding on the beach at sunrise. The early morning light creates a serene and magical atmosphere, and the beaches are less crowded at this time. You’ll be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the coastline without the crowds, and the cool morning air will make for a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

Covi Larxe-Rey

Sales Representative

A day in the life.

Executive Assistant Manager

United Arab of Emirates Oman

A day in the life.

I begin my day early, working out at the Tone Gym in the resort. After exercising, I relish the untouched beauty of the Arabian Gulf while enjoying the Green Machine juice at Café Nikki. Throughout the day, I communicate with clients through various channels, including phone, email and in-person, assisting them with trip planning, information and problem-solving, and ensuring top-notch service. As the day concludes, I unwind with my team at Soul Lounge, appreciating the magnificent sunset view, before heading home to my husband.

Meaning of luxury.

Luxury, to me, goes beyond material possessions. It represents an experience that is indulgent, exclusive and a certain level of comfort. Above all, true luxury is time: time to appreciate extraordinary beauty, whether in nature or design; time to relax and enjoy the finer things in life with people you love the most.

Carving a career in travel.

First of all, it’s really important to embrace continuous learning and cultivate a strong passion for travel and cultural understanding. This genuine curiosity will allow you to offer more meaningful and personalised experiences to travellers. For the rest, focus on networking, building and nurturing your connections, as well as developing a diverse skill set such as customer service, communication and problem resolution.

Why the Middle East a must-go holiday destination.

The Middle East captivates travellers with its rich history, vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes and renowned hospitality, making it a truly irresistible destination. Indulge in lavish experiences, exceptional service, and a culinary adventure featuring succulent kebabs, fragrant rice and delightful mezze platters. With a strong emphasis on safety, visitors can explore and immerse themselves in the region’s beauty and culture with peace of mind.

The beauty of my role is that every day is different. The priority might be a multi-day photoshoot of Jumeirah Muscat Bay, our hotel and beach resort, or working with my team on market strategies. My role also includes travelling to meet key partners around the world.

Standout career moment.

The standout career moment for me would, of course, be the opening of Jumeirah Muscat Bay. The journey of the resort – from just a construction site to being announced the best new resort globally by World Travel Awards – was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences in my professional career.

Carving a career in travel.

Follow your passion! I think the beauty of our industry is that it is so varied. There is a niche for every one of our guests’ wishes – and the careers are just as varied. Do “what it says on the tin” – work and travel in different places and see what you are passionate about. Essentially, answer how you can make an impact doing what you love to do.

Why the Middle East a must-go holiday destination.

In Oman, within an easy drive around Muscat, there are numerous attractions to explore. You’ll find a historic city with a stunning mosque, an impressive opera house, and the beautiful sea just a stone’s throw away, offering abundant diving sites, snorkelling with turtles and dolphin watching. Additionally, there are thrilling watersports adventures available. The mountains in Oman are even higher than the German Alps and offer a range of experiences, from leisurely strolls with breathtaking views to hikes through lush wadis or challenging eight-hour summit climbs. Moreover, the desert in Oman provides opportunities for glamping, dune bashing and sand surfing. These are just a few examples of the many amazing experiences you can have in Oman.

Why the Middle East a must-go holiday destination.

The Middle East is an incredible holiday destination with a captivating history, stunning architecture, beautiful beaches and exceptional luxury venues. It is home to ancient and fascinating cultures, incredibly friendly people and unparalleled hospitality. From my experience, having come from South Africa where service is renowned, I was genuinely impressed by the kindness and dedication of the people in the Middle East to serve others.

Qatar

A day in the life.

My day-to-day activities include presenting to my clients the wealth of knowledge and extensive experience I have gained over three decades in the travel and tourism industry. Therefore, I offer invaluable recommendations to procure the finest experiences and opportunities available across the world. Our heartfelt goal is to help them fulfil their dreams of luxury travel and create unforgettable experiences.

The meaning of luxury.

Luxury tourism is now a deeply personal lifestyle choice from A-Z, reflecting individual preferences and desires. In the Middle East, sustainability has become a significant consideration in the luxury travel sector post-pandemic. More Gulf citizens and residents are willingly investing in responsible, environmentally conscious luxury tourism experiences. This shift signifies a desire to merge travel with a commitment to preserving the environment and building a sustainable future.

Carving a career in travel.

For individuals aspiring to establish a career in luxury travel, it is crucial to recognise the Middle East’s exceptional international standing in this industry. Consumers, particularly in the Arabian Gulf region, highly prioritise and appreciate bespoke and luxurious travel experiences. To thrive in this field, my career advice would be to immerse oneself in understanding the unique preferences and demands of Middle Eastern clients.

Upcoming trends in the Middle East.

We remain at the forefront of sustainable and innovative luxury travel trends, continuously staying up to date with the latest advances set to shape the industry until 2030 and beyond.

PEARL OF THE

Gulf

With its unique cultural heritage, intriguing pearling history and string of pristine beaches, Bahrain makes for an idyllic island escape

From barely trodden beaches and cerulean‑washed islands to ancient archaeological sites and sweeping deserts, Bahrain offers plenty to entice –all without the crowds of its better known neighbours. Known as the ‘Pearl of the Gulf’ thanks to its millennia old pearling past, this culture rich kingdom, made up of more than 30 islands, has long been a trading hub thanks to its strategic position in the Gulf. Today its heritage remains; ancient remnants of the Dilmun empire rub shoulders with centuries old mosques and bustling souks, while a growing clutch of high-end resorts and restaurants mean there’s plenty to lure luxury travellers too.

weareconnections.com

Cultural capital

At its heart is capital Manama, where magnificent mosques and colourful bazaars meet towering, shiny skyscrapers and glossy shopping malls.

For a glimpse into the Bahrain of old, wander the maze like streets of Manama Souq – filled with stalls selling local spices, handicrafts and Bahraini delicacies – then visit the Al Fateh Grand Mosque, one of the largest of its kind in the world and an ode to opulent architecture with its gold hued interiors, glittering chandeliers and patterned ceilings.

Elsewhere in the city, the Bahrain National Museum is well worth a stop with its impressive collection of archaeological artefacts and contemporary art, while the Beit Al Quran complex offers a further glimpse into Islamic heritage, with more than 50,000 books housed here.

Millennia-old history

It’s not only in the capital that you’ll find the remnants of Bahrain’s storied past, though. Just outside the city lies Qal’at al Bahrain, a Unesco listed archaeological site dating back 3,000 years that was once the capital of the ancient Dilmun civilisation. Today the site is home to an impressive 16th-century fort, with a slew of intriguing relics displayed at the on-site museum.

For more in the way of history, the nearby city of Muharraq, set on its own island, is well worth a visit. Here you’ll find a maze of winding alleys lined with traditional Bahraini houses, alongside the imposing Sheikh Isa Bin Ali House – the former seat of the ruling sheikhs and an architectural feat with its honey hued walls and carved archways.

The nation’s capital until 1932, Muharraq has been at the centre of the country’s pearling industry since the second century and is now a Unesco World Heritage Site; wander the two-mile Pearling Path to learn more about its heritage, with various historical buildings and museums designed to offer a glimpse into the lives of the pearl divers that once worked here.

Land and sea adventures

Bahrain isn’t only about the history and culture, of course. It’s also a hotspot for adventures – not least scuba diving and snorkelling. Various reef and wreck dives are available across its smattering of isles, with whale sharks, turtles, clownfish and dugongs among the creatures to spot.

Visitors can also book a pearl diving trip from Muharraq to seek out oysters and learn about the process first‑hand, or head to Dive Bahrain, located just off the Diyar Al Muharraq archipelago. Here you’ll find the “world’s largest underwater theme park”, built around a sunken Boeing 747 and spanning an area the size of 14 football pitches.

Back on land, there’s plenty more in the way of adventure. The now-famous Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix brings motorsports fans flocking from across the world and was the first F1 Grand Prix in the Middle East. Golfing enthusiasts, meanwhile, will find a slew of world‑class courses, among them the Royal Golf Club, home to an 18-hole championship course designed by Colin Montgomerie, and the Awali Golf Club, built on the sand and the oldest course in the Gulf region.

Island life

A visit to Bahrain doesn’t have to mean doing anything at all, though. For visitors more in the market for a fly-and-flop break, there’s plenty to cater, with a slew of sandy beaches scattered across the country’s 30 plus islands.

Among the most popular is Al Jazayer, the biggest public beach on Bahrain’s main island and a hotspot for swimming and windsurfing. Closer to Manama, Abhu Subh Beach in Diraz is a postcard-pretty curve of fine white sand, with calm, shallow waters and fresh seafood trucks lining the front.

Away from the main island, the Hawar archipelago boasts pristine coastline complete with seabirds and other wildlife, while Jarada Island looks like it’s been plucked straight from the pages

of a brochure, with rings of curacao blue lapping snow white sand.

Luxury retreats

For travellers after an added dose of extra exclusivity, Bahrain isn’t short on private beachfront retreats.

On Reef Island, the Reef Boutique Hotel offers one of the country’s chicest stays, with villas scattered among date gardens and lagoons. On the Amwaj Islands development, you’ll find a myriad other deluxe properties – not least the Grove Resort, home to villas and apartments overlooking an idyllic private beach and offering plenty of watersports.

A host of bigger brands have made a name for themselves here too. Among them is the palatial Ritz‑Carlton Bahrain, set on a 20-acre seafront development close to Manama and boasting 11 restaurants and bars – including renowned steakhouse Plums, and Primavera, led by two-Michelin-starred chef Oliver Glowig.

Living up to its ‘hotel with a view’ tagline, the Address Beach Resort Bahrain is one of the newest arrivals overlooking the spectacular Marassi Al Bahrain shoreline. Dining options offer Arabic bites and international cuisine. For the ultimate relaxation, guests can lounge by the pool or on the private beach, or opt for a signature treatment at The Spa.

Along the southwest coast of Bahrain lies Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa. From the serenely styled rooms and houses that ooze Arabian luxury, to the traditional boat rides, blissful treatments and private cinema, Jumeirah has it covered for locals and visitors alike.

Just as impressive is Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, set on its own island on Bahrain Bay and boasting skyline views alongside a spa and two Wolfgang Puck restaurants – CUT and Re/Asian Cuisine.

They aren’t the only fine dining spots you’ll find across Bahrain, of course. Among the destination’s growing horde of culinary haunts is Rasoi by Vineet, offering creative Indian cuisine by Michelin-starred chef Vineet Bhatia; and Masso, inspired by the French Riviera and ranked among the Middle East & Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants.

They’re just a few of the lures giving Bahrain’s Middle Eastern neighbours a run for their money – and a peep into the lavish future of this oft-underrated, culturally rich destination that fuses history, luxury and adventure together in one enticing mix.

Jesica Arregui In conversation with Senior

Operations Executive, Connections Luxury

Jesica is a master of meticulous detail. As senior operations executive, she oversees and optimises operational strategies to ensure we consistently deliver the best for our members. We caught up with her to learn more about her journey, and what she's working on next...

Tell us about your background and how you progressed to your current role at Connections Luxury.

Born and raised in Argentina in an English-speaking household, I have a slightly eclectic background, which includes studying chemistry as well as jewellery creation. I was in fact a jewellery designer for eight years – a highlight was making crowns for the image of the virgin and child for my hometown cathedral (they had a very impressive ceremony!)

Seven years ago, I moved to London for a lifestyle change –as well as a need for self-discovery, I suppose. I had only been self-employed up until then, so tried my hand at several jobs, including door-to-door sales! It forced me to take positive experiences and learn from everything, as outrageous or as unusual as it might be.

Soon, though, I discovered my love for events. I’ve also really enjoyed rolling up my selves and helping behind the scenes and so my career started and I’ve never looked back!

Since then, I have worked in both marketing and operations at trade shows, such as Top Drawer and Home and Gift at Clarion Events, as well as Conferences at Worldwide Business Research during the pandemic. With operations – and travel – being passions of mine, I was delighted to join the operations team at Connections last year.

How do you ensure efficient and smooth operations within the organisation?

For me, the key is in communication and attention to detail. Being a very logical thinker, I find having processes in place and checklists to follow really help in my day-to-day. With so many moving elements, it also avoids having tasks slip through the cracks.

I’m also a big believer in sharing the right information, concisely, at the right time. For real action to take place, sharing irrelevant information will slow down the process of achievement.

We’re lucky that our team, across functions, is accessible –which is not something you find everywhere. This helps us to move quickly, and efficiently, as we’re all working together to achieve a common goal – making our community and every one of our events a success.

We’re lucky that our team, across functions, is accessible – which is not something you find everywhere. This helps us to move quickly, and efficiently, as we’re all working together to achieve a common goal – making our community and every one of our events a success.

What role does technology play in your operations management approach?

Technology plays a growing role in all companies, but never more so than it has over the past nine months at Connections.

Towards the end of 2022, we were engaged in a project to continue the innovation of our brand. This year, that came to fruition with the launch of our all-new Connections Luxury platform, which we’re incredibly proud of.

It was important for us to have a digital asset that reflected how our brand continues to adapt and change based on the needs of the industry. We know that data – and the management of data – is essential in ensuring we service our clients well, so I was keen to be involved from the start to implement positive internal processes that would allow us more time to dedicate to servicing.

This is just the beginning though! We’re still innovating so that our platform continues to offer relevant and valuable features for our members.

What is your best travel advice?

Always carry some cash in local currency, a power bank and a travel adaptor!

My main advice, though, is to prepare. Before travelling, learn about the destination’s dos and don’ts, bookmark your highlights and plan your must-sees – then give yourself time to go off schedule and explore. Often that is when you experience the most memorable moments.

Be open to different cultures and ways of life. Talk and learn

weareconnections.com In Conversation with: Jescia Arregui 36 September 2023

from the locals and take in all you see and experience. Travelling is eye-opening like few other things are.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy yoga, hiking and being outdoors. Every time I travel, I find my way up a mountain, into a forest or through a wadi. Next on the list is going into a huge cave in Slovenia.

Where would you love to take a Connections event?

Being from Argentina I am tempted to say Patagonia, which would be the perfect setting for a future Connections Luxury Adventure edition. It is a nature-rich region with landscapes varying from desert to jungle and mountain to beach, and with a wealth of activities to be explored. I would love to have the opportunity to show it to the world.

However, every destination has its charm and I am keen to keep exploring!

What have been your highlights so far at Connections?

If I had to pick a single moment so far, it would be taking off in a helicopter over Barcelona. After all, how often does that happen?

However, as a whole, I would have to say it was the event in Oman. Not only was it a destination I had never been to before, but it was also my first time immersed in such a completely different culture. I was able to learn about the country and the people through the experiences, and even do a tour of the Royal Opera House in Muscat. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work in an industry where this is possible.

Connections Luxury... A year of

Catalonia CHARMS OF

Whether it’s a culinary break, a coastal escape, a hiking adventure or a historical amble you’re after, Catalonia knows how to charm

From the Gaudí-etched streets of Barcelona to the medieval ramparts of Girona via idyllic beaches, majestic mountains and quaint rural villages, Catalonia is as diverse as it is captivating.

Culture, history and gastronomy come together in this distinctive region, whose draws include the Costa Brava, the Costa Daurada and the Catalan Pyrenees, with an impressive clutch of Michelin-starred restaurants and boutique hotels drawing luxury travellers after an iconic escape.

Europe: Catalonia

THE CATALAN CAPITAL

At its heart is Barcelona, where Gaudí’s whimsical creations – among them the glittering spires of the Sagrada Familia, the surrealist interiors of Casa Milà and the dragon-inspired creations of Parc Güell – meet world-class cuisine, culture and nightlife.

Any visit here warrants a visit to the cobbled old Gothic Quarter, the palm-fringed Las Ramblas and the beach at Barceloneta, but venture beyond these highlights and you’ll find a whole other side to the city. El Born is something of a hidden secret with its tuckedaway speakeasies, trendy coffee shops and excellent restaurants, while Gràcia feels like its own little village with bohemian boutiques, quirky restaurants and colourful plazas that play host to regular live music.

To see the city from on high, take a cable car up to the hilltop Montjuic Castle, or head to one of the city’s plush rooftop bars; Hotel Pulitzer’s tropical terrace hosts regular DJ sets, while the rooftop at Ayre Rosellón Hotel sits right opposite the Sagrada Familia and boasts some of the best views in the city.

Barcelona isn’t just about the sightseeing, of course; it’s also Catalonia’s gastronomy capital, boasting no less than 35 Michelin stars across 26 restaurants. Among its very best is Lasarte, where tasting menus serve up exquisitely designed dishes that look like works of art; and Moments,

set on the famous Passeig de Gracia and headed by chef Carme Ruscalleda, who’s won a total of seven Michelin stars across her portfolio of restaurants in Spain and Tokyo. Afterward, wash your dinner down with a tipple or two at quirky cocktail haunt Paradiso, named the World’s Best Bar in 2022.

WINE & DINE

It’s not only in the capital that you’ll find exceptional gastronomy, of course. Catalonia lays claim to a total of 50 Michelin-starred restaurants across its towns and cities, helped along by a serious aptitude for wine and cava.

In Girona, the famous Roca brother chefs have earnt three Michelin stars for Cellar de Can Roca – twice voted the World’s Best Restaurant and boasting no less than 60,000 wines. At the historic, Michelin-starred Ca l’Enric, gourmands can sample forest-inspired Catalan dishes at a restaurant passed down through four generations, while at Castell Peralada you can indulge in unique creations served in a 14th-century castle.

By the coast there’s plenty more to tantalise; head to the Michelin-starred Can Bosch restaurant in Tarragona for just-caught seafood, or try Quatre Molins for creative plates inspired by the chef’s sojourns in Spain, France and Italy.

COASTAL CHARMS

Beyond the culinary scene, Catalonia boasts plenty more to entice. The Costa Brava, northeast of Barcelona, serves up rugged cliffs, fishing villages and picturesque beaches in spades across its 1,240 miles of coastline.

Cadaqués is one of its most enchanting spots, with whitewashed houses and steep cobbled streets among the charms, while neighbouring Cap de Creus Natural Park inspired Dalí, who built a house in nearby Portlligat. The artist grew up in the town of Figueres, a 50-minute drive away; visit to see the Salvador Dalí Theatre-Museum, home to several of his masterpieces, and stay on to tour his family home, set to open to the public for the first time this year.

Farther south along the coast, Calella de Palafrugell is well worth a visit for its peaceful beach and traditional fishermen’s cottages, while the elegant town of Santa Susanna boasts a long strip of fine sand alongside quaint cobbled streets and medieval remnants.

South of Barcelona there’s the Costa Daurada, offering up a further slew of seaside towns. They include Sitges, whose white stone architecture, sandy beaches and bohemian vibe have been inspiring artists since the 19th century, and Tarragona, a lively seaside city home to a cluster of Unesco-listed Roman buildings, including a well-preserved, second-century amphitheatre.

Inland, there’s plenty more to explore in the way of history. Girona is one of Catalonia’s true treasures with its medieval walls, Gothic cathedral and atmospheric Roman quarter; wander the pedestrianised La Rambla de la Llibertat to browse its shops and cafes, then stroll along the colourful banks of the Onyar River and stop by El Call to see one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Spain.

INTO THE WILD

It’s not just in culture that Catalonia is rich, though, with a handful of natural parks scattered across its surface. The Catalan Pyrenees are something of an adventure playground, with the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park at their heart and home to more than 200 lakes, alongside a myriad hiking routes meandering between 3,000-metre mountain peaks.

Elsewhere, the Serra del Cadí mountain range draws climbers seeking a challenge, while the Val d’Aran is a hotspot for skiing in winter. Back on the flat, the Ebro Delta lays claim to being the second-largest wetland area in the western Mediterranean, with more than 340 species of birds calling it home, while the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park is a marshy habitat for storks and other birds found nowhere else in the region.

Closer to Barcelona, Montserrat is well worth exploring for its dramatic, surrealist-style rock formations and well-preserved monastery, founded as a mountain hermitage in the 11th century. Blending manmade architecture with a spectacular natural landscape, this majestic sight is perhaps the perfect emblem of Catalonia as a whole – and an ode to the much-revered history of this underrated, ever-changing region.

AI: A THREAT OR OPPORTUNITY?

One of the most influential thought leaders in tech and regularly featured in leading business publications in Spain, Franc Carreras shares his perception of how artificial intelligence can help make the luxury travel industry become more relevant, more useful and more connected to our most valued customers.

internet”. Imagine. We’ve also seen headlines that predict job losses, and that AI poses a risk of extinction, or as deadly for industries as nuclear weapons. Think again. What we’re really talking about here is generative AI. This is defined as “a type of artificial intelligence capable of generating text, images or other media in response to prompts; generative AI models learn the patterns and structure of their input training data, and then generate new data that has similar characteristics”.

We are not anywhere near machines taking over the world. We have no time to waste thinking about this. This is an opportunity for us, and we have to look at it for what it is. Things we can do with this technology include explaining things in simple terms or getting creative - you can be inspired by ideas generated on a subject. It can help you code. It remembers what you’ve said in the past and allows you to follow up on prompts to help improve your output. It can also be trained to decline certain things. And this is just ChatGPT by OpenAI; there are going to be other solutions available, like BARD from Google.

2023 will go down in history as the year artificial intelligence (AI) revolutionised the world. Some see it as the end of entire disciplines. Others see a massive opportunity. The only thing we know for sure is that we are sailing into uncharted waters.

Reaching the moon had been one of the longest dreams for humanity for thousands of years. As you know, by the end of the Second World War, a number of technologies made it possible for that to become a reality. In 1969, man worked on the moon. This was a big accomplishment. However, we haven’t gone back since 1972, although maybe there’s another opportunity soon. Sometimes, challenges like this cannot be achieved unless we find the will, resources and sometimes the technologies that are needed.

AI should not substitute our contribution, our zone of genius, our something special – don’t stop what you’re doing

In 1969, Xerox came up with the first machine to make copies. They needed funding to distribute and market the machine. They went to IBM for investment but, with the help of a consultancy, IBM declined the opportunity as they believed there wasn’t a big enough market. That was a big mistake. Xerox had to go alone, and they succeeded. The lesson here is that when new technologies are so revolutionary that they cut the cost down to almost zero, it opens the gate to massive increases and new use cases that were never imagined.

We should all feel very lucky to be alive today. What is the most important advance that has taken place in tech this year? What would you say? Everything goes so fast, that we are now in a world where we can witness these changes in person.

On 30 November 2022, a tweet by the founder of OpenAI started a storm: “Today we launched ChatGPT.” Everyone was encouraged to try it, to experiment with it. And everything has changed since then.

The CEO of Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, characterises it as a “more profound impact than fire, electricity and the

But be mindful that it gets things wrong too. It makes stuff up, because it’s predictive. It’s very convincing. We’ve already seen court cases go wrong as a result. It might also be biased.

Knowing that, it can be useful to your business. ChatGPT can help with text; Midjourney for images; Beautiful to create a PowerPoint-style presentation; Fireflies to summarise a session; and Synthesia to help deliver a presentation virtually.

But these tools should not be a substitute for our contribution, our zone of genius, our something special. Don’t stop what you’re doing and give it to a machine. Make sure you always take what AI gives you to produce something more or better, but never to substitute.

and cities.

The elegant port city of Tarragona was the oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian peninsula. The Amfiteatre Roma is a second-century arena facing the Mediterranean; the Necropolis contains Roman tombs; and traces of the Unesco-listed Forum stand among alleys of the walled, medieval old town. A walkway along the ramparts, the Passeig Arqueologic, offers sweeping views of the city.

The Costa Daurada, or Golden Coast, boasts more than 200 kilometres of coastline and is renowned for its golden sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and vibrant resort towns such as Salou and Cambrils. With its buzzing atmosphere, Salou is known for its nightlife and family-friendly attractions such as theme park PortAventura World. Cambrils, meanwhile, is an attractive fishing village that offers a more relaxed and authentic Mediterranean experience, with its picturesque harbour and delicious seafood.

Inland you’ll find the Terres de l’Ebre, a region characterised by its stunning natural landscapes. The Ebro River, one of the most important rivers in Spain, meanders through the area, creating fertile valleys and wetlands that are a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The picturesque town of Tortosa, with its imposing castle and Gothic cathedral, serves as the gateway to the Terres de l’Ebre.

The region is also home to the enchanting Ebro Delta Natural Park, a biodiverse wetland area where the river meets the sea. This unique ecosystem is a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts and offers opportunities for kayaking, cycling and exploring.

Asia: The Philippines weareconnections.com 4 September 2023

From the World Heritage city of Porto and the tram-filled streets of Lisbon, to the beaches of the Algarve and crater lakes of the Azores, Portugal offers visitors a rich and diverse country to explore.

Blessed with a warm Mediterranean climate, fascinating history and top culinary experiences, Portugal’s attractions can be discovered across seven distinct regions, all of which offer their own unique vibe.

THE SEVEN WONDERS of Portugal

PORTO & THE NORTH

Considered the oldest region and where the nation was founded in the 12th century, Porto & The North boasts stunning scenery, historical sights and cultural landmarks such as the medieval castle and palace in Guimaraes and the architecture and monuments in Viana do Castelo, the jewel of the Costa Verde.

Porto – the historic centre of which is a World Heritage Site – is renowned for its port wine as well as its ancient churches and monuments. These include the cathedral and the church of Sao Francisco, and modern architecture including the Casa da Musica and the Serralves Museum. Stunning beaches can be found along northern Portugal’s rugged coastline, while mountains can be explored in Peneda-Gerês National Park – the only national park in Portugal. Another way to enjoy the region is on a scenic cruise through the Douro Valley, with stops aplenty at vineyards and wineries.

weareconnections.com September 2023 53

CENTRAL PORTUGAL

Located between Porto (to the north) and Lisbon (to the south), Central Portugal is hugely diverse in terms of landscape, with its long Atlantic coastline feeling like a million miles away from its mountainous interior.

Central Portugal’s capital, Coimbra, acts as a hub for the region and is home to one of the most prestigious universities in the country, as well as myriad magnificent old buildings and fascinating monuments. Away from Coimbra, the city of Aveiro sits along the Ria de Aveiro. Known as the ‘Portuguese Venice’, Aveiro is distinguished by its canals navigated by colourful boats (barcos moliceiros), traditionally used to harvest seaweed.

LISBON

Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital is characterised by its postcard-perfect panorama of steep, cobbled alleyways and colourful trams, ancient ruins and white-domed cathedrals.

From the imposing and emblematic Castelo de São Jorge, the view over Lisbon takes in the old city’s pastel-coloured buildings, the Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Bright trams rattle along the narrow, shaded streets of Lisbon’s Alfama neighbourhood, rushing past patterned houses and tiny fado bars.

Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays five centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. And just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril, popular with Lisboetas and visitors alike keen to surf the waves at Praia do Guincho.

ALENTEJO

Portugal’s Alentejo region spans from the Tagus River down to the Algarve and east all the way to the Spanish border. Mostly rural, with rolling hills, fields, farms and forests, it’s famous for its cork oaks and olive groves. Its capital, Evora, is packed with historical sites, including Roman ruins, ancient aqueducts and monuments. This museum-city reached its golden age in the 15th century when it became the residence of Portuguese kings. Its charm can be found in its whitewashed houses decorated with azulejos - painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tilework - and wrought-iron balconies dating from the 16th to the 18th century. There are a number of other beautiful castle towns dotted throughout the Alentejo region, with Monsaraz, Marvao and Castelo de Vide all well worth a visit.

THE ALGARVE

The Algarve is Portugal’s best-known region among British holidaymakers due to its plethora of golf courses, soaring ochre cliffs and golden beaches and shops, bars and restaurants. Popular resort towns include the energetic Albufeira, the emerald coast of Vilamoura and the alfresco cafes and vibrant waterfront of Portimao. Wherever you go, you’ll be guaranteed good weather, sparkling water and clean beaches, with activities including boat trips and dolphin-watching tours, surfing, kite-surfing and stand-up paddleboarding. There are also plenty of hiking trails and mountain bike tracks that hug the coast, offering dramatic scenic rides. The region’s capital, Faro, is well worth a visit, as are the picturesque 16th-century old town of Lagos, the beautiful red castle at Silves, and the delightful Monchique Mountains, which provide stunning views over the Algarve’s magnificent, beach-adorned coastline.

THE AZORES

An autonomous region of Portugal, the Azores islands are characterised by dramatic landscapes, green pastures, fishing villages and hedgerows of blue hydrangeas. San Miguel, the largest island, boasts lake-filled calderas and the Gorreana Tea Plantation, the oldest and only tea plantation in Europe. Hiking or trekking around the steaming crater lakes at Lagoa das Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo is an incredible experience. Everywhere you go, you are greeted with stunning views of the islands and the Atlantic, with one of the best panoramas available at the top of the towering 2,351m-high Mount Pico. As well as the breathtaking nature above ground, the waters surrounding the islands are full of life, and the Azores are a great place to go dolphin or whale watching. With scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, yachting and birdwatching also available, the islands of the Azores really are an outdoor lover’s dream.

MADEIRA

Closer to Morocco than Portugal, the subtropical archipelago of Madeira is a stunning place to visit, with an enviable climate, emerald cliffs and hidden coves surrounded by the warm, sparkling Atlantic Ocean. Of the four islands, only two – Madeira and Porto Santo – are inhabited. Because of this, the islands’ natural wonders are relatively untouched and their remote location has helped preserve their pristine habitats.

Activities on Madeira and Porto Santo include hiking, scuba diving, sailing and surfing, while Madeira’s capital, Funchal, is a great base from which to explore. Madeira’s two seaside villages of Porto da Cruz and Paul do Mar are also well worth visiting if you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday surrounded by beautiful nature.

WOMEN TRAVEL LEADERS / TRAVEL MATTERS ALMANAC HOTELS

United Kingdom Czech Republic

A day in the life.

In my role, I am responsible for steering the Women Travel Leaders ship, providing support and facilitating virtual masterminds for travel industry leaders on the topics of mindset, leadership and business. Additionally, at Travel Matters, I lead the remote workers (aka homeworkers). In this capacity, I conduct introductions to relevant suppliers, comprehensive product training and travel planning for my own portfolio of clients.

The meaning of luxury.

Luxury is freedom to enjoy something beautiful without a million other people being there. It’s about getting the best table in the house - whether that’s at a Michelin-starred restaurant or a picnic on a mountain. It’s about feeling connected to people and place in a way that’s authentic.

The best booking ever made.

The best booking I ever made wasn’t necessarily the grandest in scale, but it held profound significance. I had the privilege of arranging a trip for a couple who wanted to witness polar bears in Churchill, Canada. What made this booking truly special was the personal touch. My client’s father had worked in the area during the 1940s, and records were kept in the library archive. I arranged a private visit for them to explore the archives, where they could relive precious memories of her father. It was a heartfelt journey that left a lasting impact.

Carving a career in luxury travel.

Go to travel conferences to learn as much as you can about the industry, make connections and then follow what excites you the most.

A day in the life.

I love a quote by Mark Twain – “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life” – and I do my best to follow it. I enjoy working with my colleagues at the hotel, where we all strive to improve the services for our guests. I enjoy all my roles: being a father of two children, being a loving husband, and being a sales manager with the opportunity to meet amazing people from all over the world.

The meaning of luxury.

For me, luxury is an opportunity – a chance to really enjoy something. Luxury in the hotel industry takes many forms. It can be seen at first sight, by appreciating that only the best materials are used in the hotel, or it can appear gradually, through the people at the hotel and the services they provide. It’s the art of sensing when a guest wants to rest passively or, on the contrary, is open to active rest and is waiting for wild and crazy activity recommendations.

The best booking ever made.

I am happy with every positive feedback from the client. But the greatest friendships with clients were born when overcoming obstacles together, whether it was cancelled flights, last-minute changes to conferences or Covid restrictions.

A destination in Europe you would like to receive tourism.

As I was born in the Czech Republic, I would like to highlight the capital city of Prague and its surroundings. We are located in the centre of Europe, which means the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the four seasons. Prague is full of parks, and therefore full of colours during autumn. The combination of the snow-covered historical town and the Christmas markets evokes a fairytale feeling. In the spring, the city is full of international concerts, and of course everyone loves summer. Within a short train ride from the main station, you can reach forests with castles or you can visit the international film festival in the city of Karlovy Vary.

A day in the life.

CEO Italy France

I usually wake up early and check the news to be updated about the world economy and the state of tourism. In just a day, I receive hundreds of phone calls from my clients and team members, who generally ask for advice about their or their clients’ future journeys. I am a reference point for them, due to my experience and expertise in the field of travel, and since I have visited most of the world.

The best booking ever made. For me, it was the one I organised for a client who wanted to bring her children to see the polar bears in the Canadian Arctic. But it wasn’t just a standard visit to these territories: she wished to live this experience in the most private and exclusive way, just for her and the children. So, I created an actual lodge for them, built especially to make her wish come true. They stayed in the lodge for hours, marvelling at the beauty of nature and life, surrounded by the endless whiteness of the Arctic.

Carving a career in luxury travel.

Be curious, be adventurous and never say “I can’t do it”. Explore the world as much as you can, learn from every culture, try every kind of food and enjoy every place like a real local person. Only by actually ‘living a place’ will you be able to sell the journey and organise the best experience for your clients.

A destination in Europe you would like to receive tourism. Italy is well-known worldwide, but only a few people can say they have visited its hidden gems, from the North to the South. The territories that I think should receive more tourism are the beautiful Lake Bolsena - set in central Italy, in the Lazio region, with its shimmering shades of blue; and Maratea - a small village in Basilicata, where an awe-inspiring sea merges with dramatic hilltops and mountains.

The meaning of luxury.

The concept of luxury is constantly evolving, especially since the pandemic. We all hear that luxury in tourism is now a body and mind transformation, a sustainable and conscious implication or a local immersion. And sure, it is all that. But there is something more. It is also an experience you create with discretion that turns into a special connection at the perfect moment. For me, luxury is an emotion.

The best booking ever made.

I am lucky enough to have created and personalised some beautiful travels. A divorced father took his three teenage daughters on an unforgettable journey through US national parks. They flew in a private plane at low altitudes, offering breathtaking views of the canyons. During the trip, one of the daughters turned 18, and the father wanted to make it extraordinary. At sunset, they enjoyed a private candlelit acoustic concert in a beautiful canyon, followed by a gourmet southwestern dinner. The celebration continued with a birthday cake, Native American dancers in traditional attire and a helicopter ride back to their hotel. This birthday left a lasting impression, and the daughter still fondly reminisces about it, even after 14 years.

Carving a career in luxury travel.

Be curious and open-minded. Challenge yourself with creativity, put some heart in what you do and, yes, it is OK to think outside the box. Share your discoveries. We work in a beautiful industry where we constantly learn and are inspired by other people and other cultures.

A destination in Europe you would like to receive tourism. Montenegro. It’s a surprising destination with beautiful wilderness and genuine people. The country offers so many geographical contrasts, from mountains and lakes to fjords, canyons and pristine beaches, meaning you can create wonderful itineraries and tailor a wide range of experiences.

ASK THE Expert

With Linda Ramos, director of DMC Madeira

What’s special about Madeira?

We are a small island and there’s so much you can experience. What I find truly special about Madeira is the range and sense of feelings you can have. From the sea to the mountain peaks, there are different colour, aromas and temperatures (every 100m above sea level, it drops a degree in temperature).

As you travel upward, you pass areas where fruits are cultivated and vineyards grow; keep going and you’ll reach the subtropical Laurissilva rainforest, and then at the very top you have the dry, rocky outcrops. In one day, you can experience all four seasons – and a sense that you’ve travelled all over the world.

Favourite time in Madeira?

I love December. Fewer people perhaps consider visiting Madeira in winter, though it’s a beautiful time of the year, especially for those seeking an alternative getaway over the festive period. The temperature is an average 16 degrees, so you can really enjoy being outdoors, soaking up the Christmas markets and lights that line the streets of Funchal. Then of course, at New Year we have our well-known fireworks display.

Equally, I love seeing all the seasonal wildflowers in Junewe have the wild orchid of Madeira which grows on the side of the road and in the mountains. It’s also a time when the island is lush with green; Madeira looks like a painting when you see it all in bloom. It’s just stunning.

The summer is also busy with festivals: onion, custard apple, chestnut, lemon… every single one is in a different parish, in a different location, and at a different time around the island. Anything is an excuse to have a festival here!

Where is your favourite place on the island?

I would say it’s in the Laurissilva forest, up on the northeast side of the island. There’s a place where quite often people pass by as it’s the start of one of the Levada walks. The area where it begins is like a wild park, and when the azaleas flowers are in season, it’s an immense pleasure to walk in a place that could be someone’s garden. It’s somewhere that I used to visit a lot as a child with my parents, and when I was small, the azaleas felt like they were as large as trees! It’s quite a secret - and yet to be tagged on social media!

Most memorable trip you’ve planned

I love arranging trips for clients where they can experience every feeling, every atmosphere in a day, as this is what I believe makes Madeira most memorable. We’ve driven up to the Paul da Serra plateau for a morning hike and picnic, before a boat ride or refreshing swim in the ocean. We always like to end an experience with a sunset dinner (or swim!) on the south coast.

Recommended spots to dine?

In Funchal, you’ll find nearby Câmara de Lobos, a beautiful and lively fishing village which is where our local tipple, poncha, originates from. It’s a must for some of the best bars on the island as well as seafood restaurants. Elsewhere, Ponta do Sol is great for sunset dinners, especially above the pebbled beach.

In the city itself you can enjoy everything, from Michelin-starred restaurants and gourmet eateries to little bars for a fish sandwich. There’s so much on offer.

When in Madeira…

Do it all! Climb above the clouds, hike in the forest, swim in the sea and dine with the locals.

Nature A FORCE OF

Your feet will bring you to where your heart is Irish proverb

IRELAND

Wild beauty, folklore and legendary hospitality join forces on this island in the North Atlantic Ocean. There’s nothing quite like the epicness of Ireland’s great outdoors, where million‑years old natural wonders are wrapped by a border of crashing waves, making a compelling backdrop for hikers, cyclists and adventure seekers of all kinds.

Feel worlds away on a grand journey along the Wild Atlantic Way, the longest defined coastal route at 2,500 kilometres long. From the edge of County Donegal in the north (where some of the world’s greatest surfers perfect their skills in untamed waters), to County Cork in the south, drive, walk, cycle or take to the seas to experience Ireland in all its breathtaking glory.

Step out onto the Unesco World Heritage Site of Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, where over 40,000 hexagonal‑shaped basalt columns meet the land’s edge. Legend says these were once the stepping stones of giants journeying to Scotland. Other spectacular sites along the Causeway Coast include the Gobbins Cliff Path; the Carrick‑a Rede rope bridge, suspended 100 feet above the Atlantic; and the West Lighthouse on Rathlin Island, an annual breeding ground for thousands of puffins.

Travel south of Belfast in County Down to discover the stunning landscape of the Mourne Mountains, the inspiration for CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, as well as the filming location for Westeros in Game of Thrones

Venture farther south still and you’ll come upon Glendalough, the ‘valley of the two lakes’, and monastic site in County Wicklow, now famed for its spiritual beauty.

After a day out in the great elements, hear tales sung in fire‑lit pubs, while sipping on a local Irish tipple. ireland.com

An otherworldly island 80 miles off the northwestern coast of Africa, Lanzarote is a striking destination where rugged, volcanic landscapes and golden beaches meet azure waters. So important is its natural environment that it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco in 1993.

In the south of Lanzarote lies Timanfaya National Park, home to the fire mountains. Formed from a series of eruptions from a bygone century, this spectacular and multicoloured terrain now covers a quarter of the island. Volcanic activity continues to this day; visit El Diabo restaurant run by Lanzarote born César Manrique to sample local dishes grilled naturally by the volcanic heat.

Manrique’s conservation and celebration of the island can be discovered through the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism (CACT). Los Jameos del Agua is one such space that is now home to a cave auditorium and underground swimming pool. From here, you can also visit the underground lava tunnel and caves of Cueva de los Verdes, leading from the crater to the sea and beyond, to ‘The Tunnel of Atlantis’.

From the small coastal village of Órzola, take a ferry to La Graciosa, one of the islands within the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park, and now the eighth Canary Island. A protected area for marine birds, it is one of the least visited and unspoiled islands, with no paved roads.

Every October, in what is now an island tradition, open‑water swimmers will cross the 2.6 kilometre strait of El Rio between Lanzarote and La Graciosa. Indeed, this island is truly a training ground for world class athletes, with the World Surfing Championship, Quemao Class and Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote all featured in the major sporting calendar. turismolanzarote.com

SLOVENIA

Between the Alps, the Pannonian Plain, the mysterious Karst and the Mediterranean Sea lies small but mighty Slovenia. With over two thirds of its land covered with forests, nature parks and protected areas, Slovenia is the green heart of Europe and, unsurprisingly, a haven for nature enthusiasts.

From the Triglav National Park, witness the immense peaks of the Julian Alps and its highest mountain, Triglav. For long distance hikers traversing the 270 kilometre circular Juliana Trail, or even the 750 kilometre Alpe Adria Trail from Austria to Italy, this section is a scenic wonder.

This national park is also the source of the Soča River, where watersport seekers can find adventures in its many gorges, canyons and fast flowing waters. It’s also the home of the country’s largest lake, Lake Bohinj, as well as the iconic and photogenically reflective Lake Bled, which is fed by natural, thermal springs and enjoys a mild climate. No trip here is complete without taking the traditional pletna boat to Bled Island, the only island in Slovenia, to make a wish.

The wealth of water is one of the many draws of Slovenia. There are over 27,000 kilometres of rivers, lakes, streams and mesmerising waterfalls. The country is also one of the finest sources of water in the world. Its mineral rich qualities not only mean that tap water of the highest quality is afforded to all, but that the special properties are said to have a positive effect on health and wellbeing. One such example is the spring at Rogaška Slatina, which for over 8,000 years has produced Donat Mg, a water with a high magnesium content that helps with digestion problems. slovenia.info

GREECE

Greece is a land of legends and treasures. Boasting the longest coastline in Europe bordering the Ionian, Mediterranean and Aegean seas it beckons travellers to its sun drenched shores, balmy waters and scattered islands.

But it’s not just these picture postcard destinations that make Greece a natural wonder. Travel to the west of mainland Greece for Epirus and the mountains of Pindus to discover the Dragon Lakes and the ‘Greek Grand Canyon’ of Vikos; keen kayakers can journey the impressive Voidomatis which runs through the gorge, or ride the challenging River Aoos for a real adrenaline rush.

To the far east lies lesser travelled Thrace, the home of mythical Orpheus and an adventurer’s paradise with its wild beauty, including the Rhodopi Mountains, Nestos River and Dadia Forest.

For those that enjoy the slopes, neighbouring Macedonia is a ski lovers’ paradise, with nine resorts, though relatively unexplored. There’s also Mount Parnassus in central Greece, the dreamy mountain backdrop of Arachova village.

On the border between Thessaly and Macedonia stands Mount Olympus, a calling for the devoted hiker. To rest and restore, the spa town of Edipsos on the island of Evia is home to thermal springs rich in magnesium, calcium and iron.

Across the country in the Peloponnese region is the motherland of the Olympic Games in the ‘Valley of the Gods’. Here, rocky and rugged landscapes meet some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, including Elafonisos Simos which was once the battlefield of Athenians and Spartans. visitgreece.com

Sam Blunsdon In conversation with Head of Tourist Board Promotion, Connections Luxury

Sam's experience in luxury travel and hospitality has seen him occupy pivotal positions that have played a definitive role in shaping his expertise at Connections Luxury. We sat down with Sam to hear the journey he's made to becoming Head of Tourist Board Promotion.

I also wanted to build on my passion for creativity and ventured into the world of PR, which helped develop my understanding for promotion and sales within media. This is when I was approached to join a company that was taking a pioneering approach to events in the luxury travel sphere, and met Greg Reeves, the now managing director of Connections. Feeling bold, I asked for the job in the interview – and got it –and have loved every minute since!

For the first couple of years, I worked as a sales manager, building our community of luxury decision-makers by developing relationships with luxury hotels, DMCs and destination partners. Over time, my interest in destinations grew, and I wanted to dedicate more time to promoting these incredible places to our community.

Now as Head of Tourism Promotions, I work closely with all our destination partners, building a strong relationship with each to understand their needs and wants. I fully manage their projects and follow market trends to find new and exciting ways to promote their destination to our luxury community.

How do you collaborate with tourism stakeholders to best promote the destination?

The exciting thing about tourist boards and destination promotion is there are so many ways we can showcase these incredible places.

Some of our most successful iniatitives for tourist boards are our in-person events, where we incorporate the ‘Connections Way’ approach.

Tell us about your background – what was your professional journey prior to joining Connections Luxury?

Where to start! I always had a passion for travel from an early age; like many others, I decided to travel the world before heading to university. While studying international business at Nottingham Trent, I had the opportunity to work for a global B2B events company, joining as their sales executive, and instantly got hooked. I became their top salesman within a year, and rejoined the company after uni to continue my journey in sales.

weareconnections.com 66 September 2023 In Conversation with: Sam Blunsdon

Projects we have seen great success with include our bespoke series, which is our most targeted and curated product. Working closely with tourist boards, we invite chosen luxury agencies from key and emerging source markets to experience a destination first-hand, while meeting with leading, in-destination suppliers.

Alternatively, a destination partner can be a host of a community-wide event, or even a more intimate specialist event, which focuses on key sectors including wellness, adventure, weddings or MICE. We have also been incredibly creative with fam trips, recruiting buyers to destinations for an experiential, cultural programme.

These are all supported by the power of our Connections community, where we’re able to create a far-reaching and tailored campaign for tourist boards to inspire, educate and connect with our qualified buyers.

We can’t ignore the ever-evolving world of technology, and how this plays an important role in travel. We should also be closely monitoring Web3 and the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to market and promote a destination.

What do you consider the biggest opportunities or trends in luxury travel today?

We are all seeing the shift in how we perceive luxury. Gone are the days where luxury is material. Now the focus has shifted to experience – and I don’t just mean an amazing experience in a destination. Luxury is spending time on the smaller details, so that you are given an exceptional, wonderfully surprising, memorable experience from start to finish.

We also can’t ignore the ever-evolving world of technology, and how this plays an important role in travel. AI has been mentioned a lot lately and businesses in travel need to be excited by it, rather than be hiding from it.

We should also be closely monitoring Web3, a blockchainbased web. Tourist boards could use non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to market and promote a destination. The Metaverse, or Virtual 3D worlds, is a key example of where destinations can use NFTs, by buying and building virtual worlds showcasing the experience to a huge audience of digital users; NFTs could be utilised and sold to promote and engage the trade or end consumer. For example, you could work with a

digital artist to create an NFT related to your destination or promotional campaign, which when bought from a luxury travel trade professional or end consumer, could reflect real-life loyalty reward programmes such as free night stays, discounts or benefits

The way we use the internet is changing, which means how we market to our audiences is also changing. Destinations and travel businesses alike should start to understand how they can take advantage of new tech within their long-term strategies, both with how they service their clients and how they promote to different audiences across different platforms.

What do you find most fulfilling or rewarding about your role?

As many of us know, the events industry can be hard going with long hours, multiple moving parts and a fast-paced environment. So, for me, the most rewarding part is seeing all your hard work come to fruition. You may work on a project for three, six or 12 months, and each can come with its own set of challenges, which is all part of the fun. But, when you see an event come together, or hear the community sharing their passion for the destination you have worked hard to showcase, it’s rewarding beyond words.

I am lucky enough to work every day doing a job I love. I measure my success by seeing how the people around memy clients, colleagues and industry friends – are responding to our projects. We all want to do good in life, and so when I know I am supporting others to achieve their goals, that fills me with such pride and joy.

Can you share any notable destinations you have visited that stood out the most?

This is a tough question, because I see each of the destinations I work with as part of my family – and I definitely have a soft spot for all of them!

The destination that matches my personality is California; I could spend my days basking in the sun, soaking up all that laid-back energy while enjoying the adventurous activities and stopping off at food trucks along the way. However, when it comes to food … Asia is my standout. I have had some of my best cultural cuisine moments in Tokyo and Seoul. From teppanyaki grills to Korean fried chicken, here you can enjoy the simple life, as well as a fully immersive experience.

Hollywood glamour

With its legendary live music venues, Michelinstarred restaurants and decadent hotels, walkable West Hollywood is a dream for travellers seeking a little luxury

Americas: California
September 2023 69

Rated California’s most walkable city, West Hollywood – or WeHo, to the locals – has long been a haunt for the A-list. Today it retains its illustrious glamour; Michelin-rated restaurants sit alongside legendary live music venues, while vintage shops, boutique hotels and glossy fitness studios flank elegant, tree-lined streets.

It's the quintessential LA experience, compacted into a 1.9-square-mile hub, and it makes an excellent base for exploring the wider area, with Downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica and LAX all within a 20-minute drive away, and Palm Springs and San Diego easily reachable too.

Spanish-inspired, flamenco twist into the mix.

It’s not only on the Sunset Strip you’ll find this vibrant nightlife, though. Santa Monica Boulevard is at the heart of LA’s LGBTQ community and offers plenty more in the way of stylish bars; swing by The Abbey for mixologist-made creations, see in the early hours at legendary nightclub Micky’s, or check out Tom Tom to spot celebrities sipping cocktails beneath atmospheric drop lights and old-school glitz.

World-class dining

It’s not only about the nightlife, of course. West Hollywood has long been a go-to for gastronomy, with four of its restaurants rated in the Michelin Guide California and a string of big-name stalwarts that continue to lure locals as well as visitors today.

Sunset Boulevard

At the heart of West Hollywood is the Sunset Strip – the now-infamous stretch of boulevard that’s been drawing Hollywood stars since the Prohibition era with its iconic nightlife, set against a backdrop of rolling hills. Here you’ll find a cluster of swanky rooftop haunts alongside comedy clubs, restaurants and cocktail joints; don’t miss The Den on Sunset for some of the best creations in town.

But it’s the Strip’s rock ‘n’ roll heritage that really reigns supreme, with a plethora of venues putting it at the epicentre of LA’s live music scene. Opened in 1964, the 500-capacity Whisky A Go Go has seen everyone from Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix to The Who and Nirvana play over the years, while long-running legend the Roxy Theatre is the spot where Bob Marley, Frank Zappa and Bruce Springsteen turned live recordings into album tracks. Elsewhere, The Viper Room once hosted the likes of Johnny Cash, while the 4,000-capacity Hollywood Palladium has seen everyone from Frank Sinatra to David Bowie and the Rolling Stones grace its stage.

Today these staples uphold their punk-rock heritage, playing host to up-and-coming bands as well as bigger names, and joining smaller spots like The Echo – famous for its dance and electro DJs – and El Cid, which adds a

Among its most iconic eateries is Dan Tana’s, an Old Hollywood-style Italian that opened in 1964 and remains a celebrity hotspot with its scarlet-red walls and plush leather sofas. Other favourites include Craig’s, an all-American eatery where George Clooney and Kim Kardashian are said to be among the regulars; and Catch LA, whose flower-lined entry has become one of the city’s most Instagrammable spots.

Elsewhere, the double Michelin-starred Sushi Ginza Onodera serves some of the best nigiri in LA, with a signature 20-course omakase tasting menu full of surprises, while Ardor dishes up artfully presented plates in ultra-stylish surrounds; think white velvet and leather booths surrounded by tropical greenery.

Shopping and culture

Beyond the culinary scene, there’s plenty more to entertain – not least in the way of shopping. Melrose Avenue is home to an array of eclectic boutiques, vintage shops and designer showrooms, while nearby Robertson Boulevard boasts the likes of H. Lorenzo and John Varvatos among other household names. Meanwhile back on the Sunset Strip you’ll find the Sunset Plaza, home to an array of colourful shops, and Book Soup – LA’s largest independent bookshop, housing more than 60,000 titles from across the globe.

Elsewhere, the Design District is at the centre of the city’s fashion scene with its slew of studios, art galleries and boutiques – alongside the strikingly colourful Pacific Design Center, which boasts more than 70 showrooms and exhibits in its geometrically shaped trio of buildings.

WHERE TO STAY

With all of this to explore, you might be looking for somewhere to rest your head in the city – and WeHo isn’t short on stylish options.

Among its most stylish spots is Kimpton La Peer, set in the heart of the Design District with curated artworks, custom furnishings and contemporary interiors all in perfect keeping with the area.

Closer to the action you’ll find Sunset Marquis, locally owned by the Rosenthal family. Within 3.5 acres of gardens you’ll find suites and villas, open-air dining and, hidden underground, the legendary NightBird Recording Studios.

Elsewhere, Chamberlain West Hollywood on Santa Monica Boulevard is known for its creative vibe and sweeping rooftop views, while the all-suite Montrose West Hollywood makes for a quieter escape, tucked into peaceful neighbourhood just a couple of streets away from the Sunset Strip.

Nearby, The London West Hollywood is another haunt

for the stars. There’s a dedicated floor for celebrity screenings, a hidden oasis at its rooftop pool as well as spacious suites. Home to resident English bulldogs Winston and Churchill, you’ll find little moments of Britishness throughout.

The West Hollywood EDITION on Sunset Boulevard is another sophisticated option, complete with its fivestar spa, vegetable-first California cuisine and signature touches. Venture downstairs to the in-hotel clubhouse from Thursday-Saturday.

The impressive calibre of WeHo hotels continues with The Pendry, home to two Wolfgang Puck restaurants, a members’ club, spa, 100-seat music venue and bowling alley; and the recently redesigned Mondrian, whose rooftop Sky Bar offers dazzling views over LA and a higherthan-average chance of sitting next to a star – this is West Hollywood, after all. This place knows how to dazzle – and wherever you end up, you won’t be disappointed.

CALIFORNIA, THE ULTIMATE PLAYGROUND

Here’s why California is the perfect place for luxury travellers seeking spontaneity, fun and totally, wonderfully random experiences

Whether travellers are the daring type who’ll try anything once, or they’re yearning to reconnect with their playful side, California is calling. Crowned the Most Fun State in America for 2023, California’s optimism, free spirit and progressive vibe are magnetic to those longing to see where the night takes them. The Golden State remains a place to chase dreams, to join in and let yourself go, and to reject convention in favour of something that feels more like who you really are. A pioneer in wellness, quality food and drink, music and entertainment, the state is abundant in completely one-off experiences for travellers on the hunt for something they’ve never done, seen, heard, tasted or felt before. Here’s some of what’s in store for your clients.

Choose your own adventure

Sandy beaches, mountains, deserts, canyons, waterfalls, nine national parks (more than any other US state) and staggering redwood forests - California’s diverse natural beauty sets the stage for all kinds of adventures. Whether clients are into stargazing, or something more hardcore - crawling through caves at the Lava Beds National Monument, or cycling the precipitous Big Bear Mountain Resort – there’s something for them to explore. Yosemite National Park also recently opened the only virtual reality cinema in North America, where it is screening a breathtaking VR film that enables visitors to experience the park like never before.

Feed the senses

Pair immersive artwork with a wine country experience in Paso Robles. After the sunset, travellers can stroll through Sensorio, an ethereal year-round light installation where 100,000 fibre-optic solarpowered LED spheres cover 15 acres of hills in San Luis Obispo County. Top it off with a picnic-style dinner featuring delicious local cuisine, wine and craft beer.

Celebrate 100 years of magic

This year marks the centenary of the Walt Disney

Company, with year-round celebrations taking place. California’s Disneyland Resort lies at the heart of the fun, with wow-factor night-time spectaculars, new attractions and the return of the beloved Magic Happens parade at Disneyland Park.

Find your groove

Zouk Nightlife - Singapore’s iconic entertainment experience, with an outpost in Las Vegas - is opening in West Hollywood in early 2024. The chandelier-clad nightclub will be operated by SBE Entertainment and will welcome the world’s biggest names in dance music. For those into something heavier, Power Trip is a new festival coming to Indio, California, this October. Confirmed headliners include Metallica, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osborne and AC/DC (their first gig in seven years).

Get in the game

Super Nintendo World recently landed at Universal Studios California (the first of its kind in the US). Gaming fans will delight their inner child as they’re immersed in the world of Mario and Luigi, complete with bright red mushrooms, gold coins and mini challenges to take on as they explore. The VIP experience includes gourmet dining, refreshments and snacks, and express access to each attraction, ride and show.

Do something bonkers

Dogs are the guests of honour at San Francisco’s Dogue - the first fine-dining restaurant for dogs in the US, serving up delectable three-course meals for furry babies, paired with a tipple of “Red Rosé” (pastured cream, beetroot powder and wild antelope heart).

For something completely off-the-wall, how about surfing with a goat? Pismo Beach’s Surf Goat Day package includes a surf lesson with an accomplished goat surfer sharing your board - or you can bring your own four‑legged friend to catch a wave with you.

DISCOVER YOUR NEXT DREAM

CALIFORNIA VACATION

George Horney

Global Business Development

Director Chile Argentina

LAS MAJADAS ANN&PALM

Meaning of luxury.

Luxury, by definition, means something that appears to be the best of whatever it represents and the delivery on the promise of the brand’s name. The true luxury is in the content, the meaning and the sensation produced. Luxury travel is associated with exceptional and exclusive experiences, as well as personalised services.

A day in the life.

As a dedicated individual, I am responsible for seeking new clients, identifying business opportunities and driving revenue growth at Hotel Las Majadas. With a strong focus on promoting our establishment and increasing its presence in the European market, my goal is to generate new leads and forge valuable partnerships to further elevate our success. With a keen understanding of the European market’s potential, I am committed to positioning Hotel Las Majadas as the preferred choice, ensuring our continued growth and prosperity.

The best booking ever made.

We designed an itinerary in 48 hours for a family of six that was absolutely out of the ordinary. We implemented new ideas, developed new experiences and approached new partners outside of the travel industry. We finally came up with an itinerary which involved gastronomy, wine history, adventure, wellness, private charters, culture and, most importantly, interactions with local people.

Changes in luxury travel in the Americas region. North America behaves differently to South and Central America but unfortunately I think that the travel industry across the whole Americas region is facing some challenges. These challenges are requiring us to be patient and resilient, but also, importantly, positioning us for a better future. The way we used to negotiate or gain a new client has changed; therefore, our sales and marketing strategies have changed accordingly.

Meaning of luxury.

I would say that time is the ultimate luxury and using it in a meaningful way can create a life that is truly enjoyable. Making good use of time can take many forms. This can be through spending time with loved ones, pursuing a passion, travelling to exciting destinations or simply taking the time to relax and recharge. This is why I’ve become passionate about hosting curious travellers to Argentina.

Standout career moment.

I had the opportunity to work for a company whose main desire was for its team to go on a sustainable incentive adventure in Patagonia. The high-end fundraising helped to restore an interpretation centre up in the north of Argentina. Our travellers had to complete a 100km trek in seven days. We had private chefs, private massage tents, a bar, a bonfire and local music. We built everything with the lowest carbon emissions possible, considering sustainable materials and renewable energy. The planning of this journey made me realise that it is truly all about balance. It’s about aiming to reduce the negative impact of tourism while increasing its benefits and showing how travel can be a force for good.

Carving a career in luxury travel.

Embrace the unknown, uncertainty and challenge! Travel is all about exploring and stepping outside of your comfort zone. Secondly, connect with people. Build relationships based on trust, respect and empathy. Lastly, be creative and be patient.

Changes in luxury travel in the Americas region. Luxury travel has shifted towards a more social and natural experience. Travellers seek to connect with locals and immerse themselves in the local culture, businesses and people. Similarly, nature experiences are also becoming more popular. Travellers are seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life by reconnecting with the natural world, while also visiting rural and scenic areas in a way that is sustainable for the environment.

Luxury is the privilege of personal time to prioritise self-care, self-expression and personal growth. It allows freedom to pursue passions and creative endeavours without the pressures of productivity. Whether through solitary adventures, artistic immersion or peaceful solitude, luxury fosters a deep connection with oneself and the world.

Standout career moment.

One of the most memorable highlights of my career was my first meeting with the board of directors of Marriott’s luxury brands. As I walked into the room, I could feel a sense of accomplishment and recognition. It was a defining moment that affirmed my professional growth and marked a significant milestone in my journey. Being in the presence of esteemed leaders and decision-makers within the luxury industry instilled in me a deep sense of pride and excitement for the opportunities that lay ahead. This standout career moment not only validated my hard work and dedication but also served as a catalyst for continued ambition and pursuit of excellence in my chosen field.

Changes in luxury travel in the Americas region.

Luxury travel in the Americas region is shifting towards authenticity and unique experiences. Personalisation and immersion overrides material possessions and mainstream itineraries. Sustainability and responsible travel also play a vital role in the region, with a focus on eco-conscious options and benefiting local communities.

Meaning of luxury.

Modern luxury encompasses personalised experiences, sustainability and a deep connection with local culture. Luxury also prioritises privacy, tranquillity and escaping crowds. It involves creating unforgettable moments; supporting local businesses; and promoting holistic practices through wellness, relaxation and self-care.

Standout career moment.

For me, what makes my job spectacular is when I have worked very hard on planning a trip for a client, from start to finish. It is truly rewarding when they return from a trip and tell me that “the trip was a 25 out of 10”. This just makes me fell that all of my hard work has paid off.

Carving a career in luxury travel.

Follow your passion within the diverse travel industry, building expertise in your area of interest and staying open-minded about exploring different career paths. Embrace technology, network with industry experts and provide exceptional customer service. You should also adapt to changes while exceeding expectations in the industry.

Changes in luxury travel in the Americas region.

Travellers in the Americas are seeking unique and immersive experiences that showcase the region’s many cultural heritages, natural wonders and commitment to sustainability. This includes exploring diverse landscapes through luxury eco-lodges, exclusive wildlife encounters, and outdoor activities like hiking and biking. Authenticity is highly valued, with a growing demand for engaging with indigenous communities and discovering off-the-beaten-path destinations. Additionally, there is a strong focus on supporting sustainable travel practices and experiencing the region’s diverse cuisines, wine tastings and wellness retreats.

Connections Legacy

We know how truly powerful communities can be. We also know how privileged we are to be able to travel and see the world through our events at Connections Luxury. No matter where we are, our mission is to raise the profile of a destination to help positively impact and drive business. As part of our operation, we partner with local companies that will benefit the most from our time there. But we want to go one step further. Connections’ David Benitez explains

Tell us about Connections Legacy.

Connections Legacy is a purpose-driven initiative designed to give back to each location we visit by supporting local communities that are working tirelessly to improve lives locally. Across our events calendar, and included within each programme, we are implementing opportunities where we can showcase smaller, unsung charities that we believe deserve to be celebrated.

Despite the incredible work they do, many of these organisations have little or no support. We want to help them by talking about what they do, increase their brand awareness and connect them to influential people and partners from around the world.

How has Connections Legacy helped so far?

During Connections Luxury Europe in Spain, our host venue Codorniu opened their doors to Grup 5/14 (grup514.org), a littleknown association that supports the most vulnerable in Vilanova through team bonding and community activity. Volunteers of Grup 5/14 were awarded and recognised for their efforts, and a long-lasting connection was made between Codorniu and Grup 5/14; the support from Codorniu will continue via fundraising and volunteering, which is just amazing.

Later this year, during Connections Luxury UK & Ireland, we’ll be working with Shepherd’s Star (shepherdsstar.org), a charity based in London which champions social inclusion and unlocks human potential. Shepherd’s Star will host a Table of

Hope with members for a chance to network, collaborate and learn.

How can Connections Luxury members get involved?

We want to shine a spotlight on any non-government organisation (NGO) that our members believe could benefit from our network, whether that be through exposure, inclusion or valuable contribution. It might be hosting an NGO at your property, or including a donation within an itinerary, or time given by your staff to volunteer. Through our community, we hope to highlight special projects around the world, and introduce new connections that may unlock more ways to achieve their goals of supporting local people. That is really what Connections Legacy is all about.

Tell us how Shepherd’s Star came to be.

During the pandemic I became part of a frontline team of volunteers who passionately served the needs of those in crisis within Richmond Borough in southwest London. We soon realised there was an opportunity to support some of the already established services, complementing their work by offering new projects which we as a team designed and developed - all with a desire to collaborate with the community for the benefit of those in need.

Briefly, what work does Shepherd’s Star do? And what are your hopes for the future?

At Shepherd’s Star, we come alongside people who’ve experienced life challenges and who wish to move forward, to learn new skills, grow in confidence, improve their wellbeing and reconnect with community, with the aim of living a more hopeful, rewarding, healthier and economically independent life. We achieve this through a number of projects, namely our Explore programme, our monthly Table of Hope communal meal, our weekly Twickenham Good Friday social pop-in, as well as volunteering opportunities within Shepherd’s Star and partner organisations within the community.

Our aim is to connect community and inspire hope. Looking forward, our plans are to continue building collaborative ways

of working together with key stakeholders to see more people empowered, growing in their confidence, feeling a sense of purpose, rediscovering their potential and progressing in their personal journeys with renewed hope.

We also aim to improve signposting and referral routes, which will hopefully lead to a sense of belonging, social connectivity and greater personal resilience to reduce isolation and inspire hope.

How can Connections Luxury members best support you?

We would love to find new creative ways to access funding and support from both businesses and individuals.

We are also excited to hear of volunteering opportunities whereby our beneficiaries can grow in confidence and experience, trying their hand at new skills in a low-pressure working environment. We’d also value any mentoring or coaching support from Connections Luxury members in terms of offering a few one-to-one sessions with some of our Explore graduates to help them progress on their journey.

Every month we host our Table of Hope communal meal. Would one of your members be interested in sponsoring this? Or possibly contributing in kind towards an annual fundraising event? Another suggestion might be a day’s outing to one of your luxury properties - a “site visit” whereby a small group of our beneficiaries could have first-hand experience in viewing the world of hospitality through a different lens. We’d be open to exploring any ideas your community may have and open to suggestions! shepherdsstar.org

What inspired you to get involved with Shepherd’s Star? There is no greater inspiration than Desiree. I have had the privilege of knowing her for 15 years and was excited to be able to support Shepherd’s Star knowing the level of excellence and commitment she would deliver to Table of Hope and its recipients.

What impact do you believe it’s had on your business?

Our business as a whole has benefited greatly from being involved with Shepherd’s Star. It’s given our own team opportunities to team-build and interact outside of work, as well as cultivate a positive sense of goodwill and community engagement. As an added bonus, it has opened up networking opportunities that we may otherwise not have been exposed to.

Any advice for members who are interested in supporting a local NGO?

My advice would be to find an NGO that has the same ethos as your business. It is exciting to partner and the benefits are greater for all involved when you share the same vision. hdb.london

What inspired you to get involved with Shepherd’s Star? Desiree is the inspiration for Madhu’s to get involved. Her sheer commitment to the community is second to none. Her efforts at the Vineyard project, helping the homeless, and now with vulnerable individuals, inspires us as a company to do our bit and support such a worthy cause.

What impact do you believe it’s had on your business?

Madhu’s are reopening Madhu’s Brasserie in Richmond and by supporting the vulnerable and giving back to this wonderful community, it makes our mark within the local community and also strengthens our relationship with the community.

Any advice for members who are interested in supporting a local NGO?

Madhu’s as a company try to help organisations that help those that really need it. We work closely with BAT (British Asian Trust), which mainly helps vulnerable people and children in South Indian communities. Shepherd’s Star gives us the opportunity to help those individuals that are local and really need that support. By doing so, you are helping not just the people in need but also building on community links, which only strengthen your business. madhus.co.uk
