10 Tips to Downsizing Helping a parent downsize for a move can be complicated. Where you see a houseful of stuff to sort and toss, your parent sees treasures, essentials and a lifetime of memories. 1- Organizing your efforts Use the new space as a guide for planning for the transition. Measure exactly how much closet and storage space is available in the new location. (Senior communities can provide this information if you ask) Mark the comparable space for your parent as a guide. 2- Keep sorting sessions short By that I mean two hours at most, and start with the simplest room first. Starting with the most complicated area means you may get discouraged, throw up your hands and quit. Starting with a simple room helps build the confidence to say, “I can do this.” 3- The “maybe” pile Only handle each item once. The more decisive you are about what to do with an item only increases anxiety and increases the risk of becoming attached. 4- Gifting Parting with legacy gifts while your parent is alive ensures that the item is bestowed to the person they most want to have it.

5- To sell or not to sell Think twice before selling items on your own. Craigslist, eBay, and other self-selling options are time-consuming when you’re trying to process a houseful of goods. Be realistic about your time availability. 6- Research local charities Consider donating your items to a local charity. 7- Recycle or Toss? Weigh your loyalty to recycling against your available time. 8- You don’t have to haul it away yourself You can have a dumpster delivered to your parent’s residence. This will save time on trips to the dump. 9- Consider bringing in the pros Senior move managers specialize in helping older adults and are skilled at both the emotional and practical dimensions of late-life transitions. By Kirsten Albright, Oregon Club of Eugene/Springfield On December 13, Marcus Mariota became the first Oregon player in history to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy Award. The iconic bronze sculpture is 13.5 inches tall and weighs in at 25lbs. Harder to measure is the effect it will have both on Mariota and the university in the years to come.

The fact that Mariota is the first Hawaiian to win the Heisman Trophy should also help with recruiting in the pacific. Whiplash

First, let us understand two terms. The word“Whiplash” encompasses the damage that occurs to the bony spine, particularly, the soft tissues of the neck. “Whiplash associated disorders” (WAD) encompass ALL the associated injuries and symptoms. For simplicity let’s talk about WAD. A typical auto accident There you are sitting at a red light when suddenly, wham, your car gets hit from behind. “What was that?” you say to yourself, slightly dazed and confused. You realize you’ve been hit. “Am I OK?” “Is everyone else OK?” Then you start thinking about your car. Later, perhaps hours or even into a few days later, it begins to sink in. Ever since the collision, you have not been feeling like your normal self. You’re experiencing obvious pains and symptoms like muscle stiffness and spasm, neck pain, headaches, numbness and tingling, mid back pain, low back pain, difficulty sleeping, irritability, memory loss, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and many other problems. You go to your doctor. He/ she concludes that your neck was hyperextended. He/she prescribes pills and says to come back in two

weeks if pain persists. After two weeks you go back in pain and get more pills. The cycle continues to repeat itself. Your quality of life is not improving. You worry about the cause of the pain AND a new problem, becoming addicted to pain pills. WHY do you hurt? What can you do? Back to the the accident During the accident, within 250 milliseconds, your neck went through abnormal motion causing it to flex and extend – At The Same Time! Your ligaments and soft tissue has been damaged. This is WHY you hurt. You are not suffering from a “whip” or a “lash” nor are you suffering from a “hyperextension/hyperflexion”injury. Now that you know what is causing your pain, treatment needs to focus on the injured tissues (the ligaments of the neck joints) and not just masking the pain with pills. Chiropractic is the primary treatment method for focusing on these damaged joints. While the joints are being fixed, it is also wise to include therapeutic exercises and simple stretches. Obviously the muscles are sore too, and massage therapy is beneficial. •

Retired for Eight Years “When a man retires and time is no longer a matter of urgent importance, his colleagues generally present him with a watch.” ~R C Sherriff~ After I retired I stopped wearing a watch. What’s the point? I don’t have to be any where. Writing about a watch reminded me of alarm clocks. How many years have you woken up to the buzzing of an obnoxious alarm clock? My friends, it’s been 8-years since I retired and in all that time I’ve never set my alarm clock. I don’t even have an alarm clock. The day I retired I bought a brand new hammer and invited my chums over for an “Alarm Clock Smashing Party.” The coals on the grill were almost ready for burgers, beer was flowing and it was time. I hauled out my alarm clock picked up my new hammer and smashed that baby into a million pieces. Then I did the retirement dance of joy. What a sweet moment. My job was one endless pointless meeting. I was at a meeting at the Post office one day where a committee met to assist the United Way. The lady Post Master brought a coffee cup into the meeting. There was printing on it. It said “Not Another Meeting.” I’ve never forgotten that.

I retired from the Department of Home Land Security on September 30, 2006. My 8-years of blessed retirement have flown by at the speed of sound. It feels like Chuck Yaeger is flying my retirement plane. Never in my wildest dreams did I think time could speed by that fast. My friends, who are about to retire, I’m trying to think of some words of wisdom to slow down time in your retirement journey. And I got nothing. Except to say

You will wake up with a smile on your relaxed face then turn over and catch a few more hours of sleep. You will dream. In your dream you will hover over your ex co-workers who are attending another mind numbing, extremely boring, soul sucking meeting. Force and record-setting test pilot. In 1947, he became the first pilot confirmed to have traveled faster than sound, much like my retirement. Remember when we were young, I mean really young like seven or eight years old. Three months of summer vacation from school seemed like it stretched out forever like eternity. There were a lot of things I wanted to do in retirement that aren’t going to happen. I bet this happens to a lot of retirees. I had my heart set on being a Chippendale Dancer and taking a cruise to Bosnia. I also wanted to ride a camel through the Middle East dressed like Lawrence of Arabia and back pack through the Gaza Strip. But financial woes and physical aliments put those retirement dreams in the dumpster. I wept, wailed, gnashed my teeth and rent my garments. My friends, if you take away anything from my column this is it. Remember to save for retirement. A social security check just won’t cut it. $1,294 bucks is the average monthly benefit ($323.50 a week). That’s not going to keep the wolf away from the door. I read that 1/3rd of Americans haven’t saved for retirement! Yikes! Find a financial advisor who can advise you on how to achieve a secure and cozy retirement. Please don’t wait until it’s too late.

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/4 cup water 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon reduced-calorie margarine 2 eggs or equivalent in egg substitute 1 3/4 cups reduced-fat biscuit baking mix 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice Sugar substitute to equal 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 3/4 cup raisins 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9-by-13-inch cake pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. 2. In a large bowl, combine pumpkin, applesauce, water, margarine and eggs. Add baking mix, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice and sugar substitute. Mix well to combine. Stir in walnuts and raisins. Pour batter into prepared cake pan. 3. Offbeat Oregon History True stories hardly anyone knows about

By Finn J.D. John Oregon Gold-Country Legend: The Solid-Gold Snuff Can

The Cascade mountains of Oregon are gold country for sure — but the McKenzie River Valley area is not exactly its hottest area for prospectors. Which is why I tend to think the legend Don Churchill told me about may have some truth to it. Like many longtime Oregonians, Don is a consummate rockhound. He’s got a shed full of old lapidary equipment and slabs of stuff like volcanic hailstones, thundereggs and moss agate, which he’s collected over the years. And, of course, he’s spent some time looking for gold as well. Those of you who know your gold-country legends will probably recognize the story he told me. I’ve heard and read it about a couple other places as well — down Jacksonville way, for instance, or out in northeast Oregon. But this may be the original. The story dates back to the 1920s and 1930s, before World War II. The way Don tells it, for many years a Native American man was a regular visitor to the Deerhorn Ranch, up the McKenzie River. He would drive up the river in his old Ford Model T and spend the night there. The next morning, he would hike into the mountains. He’d be gone just until around dusk. But

when he came back, he’d be carrying a snuff can — the round kind, like Copenhagen comes in — packed with gold dust. The next morning, back down Highway 126 he would go. The can of gold would last him usually two to three years; after that, he’d drive his Model T back up and do it again. Naturally, this attracted some attention from folks who would have liked to, to use a kindergartener’s euphemism, “share” the gold with him. Many times people tried to follow him into the mountains. Each time, he slipped away and came back with his can of gold. Then, without fanfare, he simply stopped coming. No one knew if he’d died, or depleted his cache of gold, or what. But no one ever figured out where the gold was coming from. In other places, there would be a very likely explanation: The Indian would have been an old miner, working in a commercial gold mine, who had managed to smuggle some dust out of the mine each day — perhaps in a special hollow spot in his pick, maybe in his shoes or underwear, or somewhere else — and had cached it someplace for later retrieval. The fact that it was

always gold dust — an eminently smuggle-able form of the stuff — supports this theory. But there were no working commercial gold-mining operations up the McKenzie. And if there were known sources of loose gold (dust) up there, I haven’t been able to learn about them. Another possibility would be that a prospector had struck it rich up there somewhere, and then — before he could bring his findings to market — something had happened to him. Perhaps then the Native American stumbled across his remains, along with his gold. Or perhaps this is just another gold-country legend, augmented with a few specific facts to make it play better around a campfire late at night. Imagine being a child in foster care with a large cast of adults coming in and out of your life. While each counselor, therapist, and caseworker is interested in your success, you lack a steady adult to support you throughout the transitions you experience. This is the unfortunate reality for many youth in our foster care system, and it is just one of the reasons A Family For Every Child created their mentoring program. It is also one of the reasons Katrina Purdy became a mentor. Katrina has always loved having kids in her life, from those she baby sat to nieces and nephews. She also feels strongly about being involved in her community. So when she moved to Eugene several years ago, it was natural that she would get involved in community organizations where she could develop connections with youth. While Katrina volunteered with many great non-profits — and still does — it was through A Family For Every Child where she met Dominique. With “Dom,” Katrina has created a relationship which has changed lives. Many people are familiar with

A Family For Every Child because of the “Heart Galleries” around town where professional photographs of foster children waiting for adoption are on display. Tucked in amongst these exhibits, are photos of mentors and their foster child mentee. Mavis Sanchez, the Director of the Mentoring Program, says the goal is to pair a youth in foster care with an adult who will provide encouragement and support, and be both a role model and friend. Mentors are asked to devote 10 hours a month to their mentee and to commit to a one year relationship. “I really feel I’ve made a huge difference in Dom’s life,” Katrina said the other morning, and then she began to tear up as she continued, “and Dom has made an even bigger difference in my life.” While Katrina and Dominque have a great relationship now, two and a half years ago when they first met, progress was slow. Dom was initially shy and withdrawn. She had already had one mentor and the match did not go well. Katrina said they began by taking long walks, talking, and www.OregonDigest.com

getting to know each other. Today they enjoy a very active relationship, playing disc golf and tennis, making crafts, or doing non-profit work together. Now that Dom has turned 17 and has a boyfriend, Katrina has struggled to figure out her new role in Dom’s life. However, Katrina knows one thing is for sure, there is no “end” to their relationship. According to Mavis, A Family For Every Child has about 75 mentors in Lane County and an additional 60 youth waiting for a mentor of their own. The process of becoming a mentor can take a couple months including training, an in-home interview, and a back ground check. For the right person, like Katrina, the initial approval process and awkward getting-to-know-you period is well worth the long term relationship and the knowledge that she has made a significant difference in a young person’s life. • To learn more about mentoring with A Family For Every Child visit www.
