JEWELRY OF IDEAS: THE SUSAN GRANT LEWIN COLLECTION — The exhibition presents more than 140 jewelry pieces from the Susan Grant Lewin Collection. The traveling exhibition is organized by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York. The pieces exemplify innovative practice, showcasing works that make use of unexpected material, surprising form, or radical developments in the field of jewelry making. Those familiar with Cranbrook and its history understand that at the same time these buildings were being built, Saarinen chose and commissioned artists to design and make the furniture, rugs, wall hangings and other art objects that would complement the architecture. BANANA REPUBLIC — The SCAD Museum of Art presents “Banana Republic,” an exhibition by Hasani Sahlehe (B.F.A., painting, 2015). Through his unique perspective growing up in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Sahlehe investigates the culture of his home island. The exhibition features new paintings that consider colonization of the Caribbean and its effects on food sources and plant species. Through Feb. 3. scadmoa.org/. SCAD Museum of Art, 601 Turner Blvd. CAPTURING THE SOUL: PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE W.W. LAW COLLECTION — The display features thirty portraits from the W. W. Law Photograph Collection which highlight the evolving nature of photography, portraiture as an art form, as well as material culture through time. Harris St. FOR THE BIRDS — Tim Foster is an artist who has lived and worked locally for almost two decades. This body of work represents a selection of his photographs taken from his years documenting the Savannah skyline and the detail inherent in many of its architectural monuments. In his photography, he juxtaposes panoramic scenes of Savannah and its surrounding area in various stages in its development post 2000, with detailed elements rarely seen by the naked eye. I HAVE MARKS TO MAKE — For 24 years, the exhibition has brought together individuals of all ages from the Savannah community to celebrate the power of art to transform lives. Works in the exhibition were drawn from community partner organizations, and more than half were created as a result of Telfair’s Therapeutic Outreach program. Jepson Center for the Arts, 207 West York St. IN THE PRESENT: FIVE DECADES — The SCAD Museum of Art presents “In the Present: Five Decades” by veteran photographer Elaine Mayes, exploring works that span 50 years of her career. The exhibition includes iconic works from the 1960s and ‘70s as well as mines lesser-known aspects of her practice to consider in relation to recent work. The curatorial framework centers on Mayes’ broader philosophy surrounding image making, which stems from her immersion in the moment and in producing imagery with a visual vocabulary that stands the test of time. THE LANGUAGE OF VISION — The Language of Vision: Early 20th-Century Photography brings together the work of four eminent artists from Telfair Museums’ perma­nent collection: Ralph Steiner, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Walker Evans, and Helen Levitt. Through his alchemistic logic of combining seemingly random materials, such as neon, fishing nets, pitchforks, and rope, Look! I’m Over There is an installation of sculptures that expand Kenney’s visual language past the narrative collage and mystical taxidermy creatures for which he is recognized. Through Jan. 26. Lane Blvd. MONET TO MATISSE: MASTERWORKS OF FRENCH IMPRESSIONISM FROM THE DIXON GALLERY AND GARDENS IMPRESSIONISM — Monet to Matisse: Masterworks of French Impressionism from the Dixon Gallery and Gardens boasts significant works of art by the most dynamic artists to work in late 19th- and early 20th-century France, including Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, and Henri Matisse. From plein air landscapes to scenes of modern life in Paris, the 30 paintings in the exhibition illustrate the radical innovations launched by artists we know today as Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.
