News & Opinion editor’s note

Some guys have all the luck by Jim Morekis | jim@connectsavannah.com

Welcome to our annual St. Patrick’s Day special issue. Inside you’ll find pretty much all the info you need to enjoy the big weekend, from your basic parade/parking type stuff to a bit of Irish history to an exhaustive entertainment roundup. In addition to the goofy new wristband/ to-go cup idea — requiring you to pay five bucks to do what you could do for free the rest of the year, but only in a gerrymandered area euphemistically called the “Festival Zone” — the other big development this year is the robust ramping-up of the local band presence during the festivities, chronicled by Bill DeYoung inside. Bill also takes a gander at the traditional Irish music taking place over the weekend, centering on the activity at Kevin Barry’s Irish Pub on River Street. Jessica Leigh Lebos takes a closer look at the wristband issue, as well as contributing

her personal take on what it means to be Irish — when you’re not actually Irish. We like to have fun with the St. Patrick’s cover, and this year is no exception. We got in touch with Joshua Branstetter of Jabberpics.com, who delivered both in concept and in execution, with much thanks to the folks at Meddin Studios. The naughty duo on the cover this week is Jessica Schwartz and Stephen King. Additional models are Savannah Christine and our own contributing writer/Stopover Twitter goddess Jenny Dunn. Makeup for the shoot was by Katherine Taylor.

The other big development in our lives here at Connect involves our brand-new website. You’ll be hearing more about the new connectsavannah.com in the coming weeks, but suffice to say we’re exhilarated by the look, feel, and response. At the new connectsavannah.com we continue to expand our events and listings database to be by far the most comprehensive and searchable in the area. As a member you can make lists and save your favorite locations, events and stories. Want to add an event to your personal calendar? Click the ‘add to ical’ button next to any event. Want to be reminded of a particular event? Click the ‘remind me’ link next to any event and you can have a reminder emailed or texted to you. Local movie times are constantly available and updated. And yes, there’s a mobile version at last! cs

Outtakes from the cover shoot at Meddin Studios. The lucky, unusually tallish leprechaun is Stephen King. The girls are Jenny Dunn (with the Jack Daniels bottle in the pic on the left), Savannah Christine (with the Bud Light bottle in the pic on the left), and cover girl Jessica Schwartz, prior to being doused with green liquid. In the pic at right, that was going to be a Photoshopped pot of gold. Maybe next year...
