Briefly, Fergus considered going into orchestral conducting and doing opera and musical theater, but quickly realized that wasn’t the path he was going to take.

ISLAND DREDGING PROJECT

Long-dormant, the planned Riverview development may one day mirror the newly developed Eastern Wharf mixed-use community across President Street, with hotels, apartments, shops, restaurants and roof-top bars. First things first though. Some zoning changes had to be made.

VICTORY NORTH OWNER PLANNING NEW RESTAURANT IN SAVANNAH’S STARLAND DISTRICT

While city staffers agreed that the current industrial zoning classification is inconsistent with the growing development pattern in the area, Riverview’s zoning request was recommended for denial since it would lack some of the standards that control development downtown. Instead, staff recommended, and the city council approved, D-C (Downtown Commercial) as an alternative zoning classification, with restrictions, which allows similar uses while providing better protection against potentially negative impacts.

The approved D-C zoning and conditions require that a general master plan be approved by the Metropolitan Planning Commission prior to the

The red brick building was originally built between 1936 and 1940 and operated as a cold storage “icehouse”, but has been vacant for 30 years, according to the project’s architect, Kevin Rose of Savannahbased Rose Architects. The proposed rehab will preserve the existing structure, while adding a kitchen addition on the south side, along with a small entrance vestibule onto the existing stoop on the west side. In addition, a small restroom addition will be added to the easternmost corner of the north facade, along with a glass indoor/ outdoor seating area.

The amount of sales-tax revenue available for a $3.36 million dredging contract won’t cover the cost of the voterapproved project, which will accommodate a marina being developed as part of a $400 million mixed-use community on Hutchinson Island.

The Chatham Co. Commission is expected to approve dredging to accommodate a marina being developed as part of a $400 million mixed-use community on Hutchinson co-owner, Carol Higgins. The project will provide an an alternative parking option to the outdoor lot across the street that the tour company currently uses. That outdoor lot will in turn be used for employee parking.

The dredging of the slip, east of the Westin, will accommodate the marina planned for the under-construction Savannah Harbor parcel 5 development. The 27-acre site along the Savannah River and east of Slip 1 is where Savannah Harbor Partners is developing housing, retail and lodging, along with a public waterfront park, medical complex and marina. While the marina will be developed by private entities, Chatham has committed to removinag the soil materials within the slip area to a depth that allows use by boats. The work covered by the proposed contract includes the removal of accumulated sediment and native soils by hydraulic dredging and off-site disposal.

It’s hard not to be excited about the potential of this Georgia Southern season now. Most people, including yours truly, expected the Helton transition to take some time. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year, remember? Forget about all that now.

For the first time since joining the FBS in 2014, Georgia Southern beat a team from a Power 5 conference last Saturday night on national television.

Vantrease threw for 21 first downs against Nebraska – the most ever for a GS team in a single game. He tallied 409 passing yards and became the first Eagle ever to throw for 300-plus yards in consecutive games. He was named the Walter Camp National Player of Week for his efforts, the first GS player to ever earn that award.

So far, so good for GS head coach Clay Helton. Helton was the first FBS coach to be fired in 2021 after his Southern Cal team started slow. His 2022 Eagles were largely responsible for Frost being the first FBS coach fired this Taskedseason.

In a game that had five ties, five lead changes and 1,217 yards of combined total offense (most ever for a GS game), Southern (642 yards) was not only able to keep up with the Cornhuskers, the Eagles were the ones setting the tone. Instead of the methodical, calculated pace of the optionoffense Eagles, this team moves at high speeds (88 plays vs. Nebraska) and bites off yardage in giant chunks (eight passes of 25+ yards & five runs of 10+ yards).

Elsewhere in this state in terms of college football … Georgia (2-0) has strolled through its first two games of the season. The defending National Champions moved up to No. 1 in this week’s AP Top-25 poll, for whatever that’s worth. UGA’s biggest obstacle to winning the SEC East this season might be boredom. Prayers up for South Carolina this weekend as they welcome Kirby Smart’s team to Columbia.

FOLLOW Travis Jaudon on Twitter/Instagram @ JaudonSports. Email him at travisLjaudon@gmail.com. Listen to him on Hot Grits Podcast, Savannah’s No. 1 sports podcast. New episodes are released each Tuesday.

On a wild and wacky college football Saturday which saw two other Sun Belt Conference teams win versus P5 opponents, Southern’s upset win was actually the most unexpected. Marshall beat No. 8 Notre Dame as a 21-point underdog and Appalachian State took care of No. 5 Texas A&M as a 20-point underdog.

SPORTS NOTES

Sure, GS beat Florida in the swamp in 2013, but that squad was in its final season as an FCS team. That was a big win, yes. But the win over Nebraska was just so much bigger. The win over UF marked the end of an era, this win marks the beginning of one. Regardless of what happens for the remainder of this season, including this week at UAB, Georgia Southern’s upset at Nebraska was an undeniable validation of the transition in scheme.

The Eagles were a 23-point underdog at the Las Vegas sportsbook when their game began Saturday night. By the time the clock hit zero, GS was 2-0, the talk of the college football world, and Nebraska’s head coach Scott Frost was fired in the hours afterward.

with bringing Southern into the 21st century of college football with the transition from option offense to an outright air raid scheme, Helton and offensive coordinator Bryan Ellis couldn’t have imagined a better start.

Savannah State (1-1) lost 34-14 at home to NAIA Southeastern in an ugly week one performance. But head coach Aaron Kelton’s team got in the win column last Saturday on the road at Edward Waters University, 31-28. A win is a win, but Ed Waters was picked to finish at the bottom of the SIAC in preseason polls, so a three point win over them won’t do much to inspire confidence in the 2022 SSU squad. When the school chose Kelton over then interim Russell DeMasi back in the spring, they officially moved on from the program’s most successful three-year run ever. They thought the grass was greener, I guess. So anything less than a winning record this season would be considered a disappointment, at least in my book.

THIS SPORTS:JAUDONTHROUGHOFFENSETHESOUTHERNGEORGIAYOURAIN’TDADDY’SEAGLESAIRRAIDLOOKSIMPRESSIVETWOWEEKSBYTRAVISJAUDON Sports @JaudonSportsColumnist COMMUNITY SPORTS

This ain’t your daddy’s Georgia Southern. And yeah, your daddy’s Georgia Southern won six FCS National Championships from 1985-2000. So there’s no shame in that game. This version of the Eagles is capable of scoring 40+ points every time out, and that was never the case in the option’s hey-day in Statesboro.

The Eagles are 2-0 for the first time since 2018, which just so happened to be Chad Lunsford’s first season as the

full-time head coach in Statesboro. That year was historic for the program, as they finished with 10 wins including a Camellia Bowl victory to cap it off. For Southern faithful, expectations for 2022 are now much loftier than a midDecember bowl win. This team has made history over its first two games, imagine what they could do over the next two months.

Georgia Southern (2-0) knocked off Nebraska (1-2) in spectacular fashion, 45-42, taking the lead for good on Kyle Vantrease’s eight yard touchdown run with 36 seconds left in the game and sending the GS fanbase into an immediate frenzy from Statesboro to Lincoln, Nebraska.

Well hey Stephen Plunk! Would you like to pose for a pic with Christi Kempf, Macey Fordham and Maura O’Donnell? “I insist,” shares the South of DeRenne Avenue organizer. Beside them are Rotary peeps Laura Lane McKinnon and Zerik Samples who invited me to Habitat for Humanity’s Hops for Habitat at Moodright’s on Abercorn on September 27.

Speaking of cool, I grab a free cookie crumble milkshake and get sugar chills before running over to hug my Latina friends Lisette Riccelli, Jessika Garcia and Rosa Gonzalez Phelps. While congratulating Rosa on her “unexpected surprise”, I see her husband Dwayne arrive in his Army uniform.

Arriving next is none other than our Mayor Van Johnson. In a jubilant mood, the Mayor works the rooms with a lot of grip-and-grins, poses for some selfies then slows down for an introduction to Frederika and Michael.

Cuban Window Cafe shot out of a cannon. They could barely keep up. They had visions, however, on an empire.

EAT IT & LIKE IT PRESENTED WEEKLY BY SAVANNAH TECHNICAL RETURNSCUBANDOWNTOWN’SCOLLEGEWINDOW

For those that aren’t familiar, Cuban Window Cafe opened late 2020. A couple from Miami left South Florida during the pandemic and decided to set up shop here. They convinced the property owner to rent them the space at The El Cheapo gas station. A space that hadn’t been used for much of anything for over a decade.

It is dripping with drama, betrayal, dishonesty, and theft.

Locals far and wide were making special trips downtown for some take-out. Cubans visiting Savannah from Miami were being sent there by their hotel concierge.

They rolled up their sleeves, cleaned it up, and made a restaurant. That restaurant was very much in the street food style of eatery you could find on almost any corner in TheMiami.price was right, the food was good. They were an instant hit.

HAPPY HOUR ARTIST TALK

Parents to Christian Sottile, the richly talented architect of such important projects as Plant Riverside and the SCAD Museum of Art, the Sottiles live above their antiques gallery and occasionally show work by artists they admire.

CULTURE

I meet Dutton at a downtown coffee shop and am immediately overwhelmed by her energy, vivaciousness, and energy! Stories abound about her brief stay in Atlanta many years ago (when her late husband was hired as the art director of what later became the Woodruff Arts Center), about opera singers, actors, and vaudeville artistes she has met over the years, and about her newfound love for Savannah. She and second husband, Wayne, had visited often, but finally left the cold of Catskill, New York to relocate here last September.

“Like my dad, I have a passion for words and pictures. One of my fondest memories is sitting with him at the kitchen table drawing. I remember making a man in a hat. Like most children I drew the hat like a cake on a platter, perched on a circle, but he showed me—first with his own hat, then in a diagram—how the hat rests down over the ears. I was about four and felt very grownup when he told me that.

Recently, I received an email telling me of an artist named Sandra Dutton who would be showing at Taylor Galleries.

Paintings by Sandra Dutton: (ABOVE): “JW” and “Gargantua Rises,” Jekyll Island. (OPPOSITE): “Vinalhaven Island, Maine” and “The Porthole, Portland, Maine.” “Tybee Island is featured on this week’s cover. Images provided by the artist.

Located on Monterey Square, Taylor Galleries is owned by Michael and Valerie Sotille, founders of the sorely missed former Hurn Museum of Contemporary Folk Art on Whitaker and Park.

An accomplished author, artist and teacher, Dutton holds a B.A. in Fine Arts, an M.A. in Creative Writing, and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric & Composition, and has taught English at the University of Louisville, New York Institute of Technology, and the University of Maine, Farmington.

With her gift for language, I can make no finer or more interesting an introduction than the bio page of her eponymous website:

One of these is their friend of many years, Sandra Dutton.

Unfamiliar with both artist and gallery, I was immediately intrigued…

“Another lesson involved drawing the house behind us—a threestory white shingled house. I was caught up in drawing every shingle, wondering how I would ever finish, and the drawing kept getting worse and worse. ‘You should suggest,’ said my dad. He showed me how a few horizontals attached to short verticals could imply an entire wall.

ANDDUTTON:SANDRAENERGY,OBSESSIONS,DISCOVERIES

“In college I majored in art…subsequently becoming a junior executive at a San Francisco department store… During this time, I kept company with my aunts Mabel and Martha, who filled me in on family history: my sea captain ancestors who sailed round the Horn from Maine and Philadelphia to San Francisco; my grandfather, an artist, who also played viola and conducted an orchestra; my great, great uncle, Frank M. Pixley, who founded, in 1877, published, and edited the San Francisco Argonaut.

As for the “pictures,” Savannahians can judge for themselves Friday, Sept. 16, when Dutton’s show of acrylic paintings, entitled “Obsessions and Discoveries,” opens at The Taylor Gallery.

“… I began reading the historical columns in the San Francisco Chronicle and learned that Pixley hired Ambrose Bierce for his first editor, that he drove his mule team down Van Ness Avenue each night after putting the magazine to rest, that he was asked to give the Fourth of July speech at Union Square, that he was a confidant of Mark Twain. I was born in Missouri. I had always loved Huckleberry Finn. A web began to form in my head of destinations and possibilities. An urge to make something. I wasn’t sure what, but the means I knew would be pictures and words.”

She paints and sketches plein air but prefers to create the final piece in her studio from preliminary studies and photographs.Dutton’swork is fresh, vibrant, and joyously full of life – much like the artist herself. It seems fitting to close as I began, by letting her describe things in her own beautiful words:“Iobsess over strokes, favoring certain brushes that allow me to make clean sweeps, to lay down clean color. It’s the goosh and swoosh of the paint I love, finding surprises – a color that sears, a rhythm that dances. I love to capture energy.”

“We realized it was all in the telling.

“No wonder my father loved words. No wonder he loved pictures. No wonder he wrote songs. Oddly, he’d never discussed his family history—my mother said it was because he was a change-of-life baby, and having been around older people all his life, he had an aversion to history.

Indeed, Dutton has utilized both “pictures and words” exceedingly well, having written, illustrated, and published six books for children; becoming the founder, publisher, and editor of her own literary magazine, “River

She tells me she has long been enamored by boats and coastal landscapes (her northeast “obsessions”) and has recently become fascinated by the boneyards of skeletal trees on the barrier island beaches (just one of her new southern “Discoveries”).

The opening reception for Sandra Dutton’s “Obsessions & Discoveries” is Friday, September 16 from 5 – 7 pm at the Taylor Galleries, 10 W. Taylor Street. Work will hang through October 13 and can be viewed Wednesday through Saturday between 12 and 5pm and by request.

City Review,” in Louisville, KY; and creating a musical, “Just a Matter of Time,” most recently produced at the Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill, NY.

Magical.“Healso taught me about words. How much fun they could be. There were long poems he recited from memory that he’d written himself. One, “The Tale of the Bald King” begins,

“Pictures and words. Words and pictures. I had a wonderful English teacher in high school, Miss Catherine Morrison…We wrote parodies, plays, commercials, an autobiography, and if we were assigned to write certain types of sentences as exercises, she encouraged us to make them amusing.

Painting with bold, sparse, sure strokes in a vibrant Impressionistic style, Dutton has included works from her time in Maine, whimsical paintings of animals and insects, a couple of deftly rendered portraits (she is open to commissions), and 13 paintings created since her move to Georgia.

More information on Dutton can be found at SandraDutton.com

“And then there were the songs he’d written, “The Chocolate Soldier Brigade,” “Little Ragged Ann”—he would sing them every so often, usually on a Saturday, or driving down the road. I have the sheet music he had made, copyright 1939, in San Francisco. Later I discovered they were part of a children’s musical he’d written and sent off to a publisher. The publisher rejected it, and my dad never sent it out again. But every few years my mother would record a professional singing the songs—usually a friend of the family—and present the tape as a Christmas present.

Far away where no one visits Lies the land of Whatsitisits. The Whatsits are a gentle race Who wear long whiskers on their face. They let them grow beyond their knees For if they didn’t they’d jolly well freeze.

“Storytelling was prized at our house, and at the dinner table my two sisters and I would recount the eccentricities of our teachers, sometimes pushing off from the table to demonstrate a walk or a gesture. My mother, an especially good mimic, would join in with stories from her office, letting her glasses drop down her nose for one speaker, pushing them up for another, altering her voice as she described the daily affairs. She was head of personnel for United Dairy Farmers, a large chain in southern Ohio, and we all thought her office must be the most exciting place in the world. My sister Jane spent a day at work with her, but when she came home she whispered, ‘Nothing happens.’

“Tick Tick Boom” is the story of an aspiring composer, Jon, in New York City who is worried he made the wrong career choice, while navigating the pressures of love and friendship. Trey Norris leads the cast playing Jon.

“This is probably the biggest role I’ve had to date. I never leave the stage during the hour and a half show so this is a lot of pressure in this really great show.

Containing fourteen songs, ten characters, three actors and a band,

The music is very special and genuine in this show,” said Norris.

The design firm Riggs-Ward was engaged to help create the exhibit; they were selected based on their excellent work for the Library of Congress, New Orleans Jazz Museum, Black History Museum and Cultural Center, and the Smithsonian. The content was developed in consultation with jazz historian, Dr. Charles Elmore and with Teddy Adams and Dr. Otis Johnson.

form. From Joe “King” Oliver, Louis Armstrong’s mentor,to Johnny Mercer, Savannah’s famed composer and vocalist, to acclaimed bassist and composer Ben Tucker, who led the jazz revival from the 70s, the Jazz Hall of Fame will give visitors an understanding of the legends of Savannah jazz.

Like New Orleans, Savannah was one of jazz’s birthplaces and has been a leading center of the art form through its noted composers, performers, venues, festivals, media, and businesses since the 1920s.

The event will feature the Savannah Jazz Hall of Fame Band, a ribbon cutting, a tour, and a reception.

The evolution of jazz in Savannah, from its earliest incarnations to the present, will be the main focus of the exhibit.Visuals and stories of the vibrant old West Broad Street (now MLK Blvd.) scene will illustrate the importance of this once-great jazz mecca.

Executive Director of Savannah Jazz, Paula Fogarty, said, “Our City’s jazz history is as old and significant as that of New Orleans, but the story has yet to be told. This exhibit will not only be a legacy project for our organization, but for the City of Savannah itself. It will serve as the keystone for our educational programs enlightening newcomers to jazz and aficionados about this history. We are thrilled to collaborate with the Coastal Heritage Society and the Savannah History Museum.”

After three years of fundraising and planning, Savannah Jazz has set the grand opening date for its Savannah Jazz History and Hall of Fame Exhibit for September 17 in the Savannah History Museum.Raising over $140,000 for the project not including in-kind donations the organization is bringing Savannah’s rich jazz history to life.

display will include Ben Tucker’s historic bass violin, Johnny Mercer’s Oscar award for “Moon River” and other memorabilia, artifacts from the estate of James Moody including his favorite horn, photos and posters from Savannah Jazz Festival and acclaimed concerts with the top jazz performers in the world, and recordings, and videos of the legends who performed in Savannah. Tickets are available at savannahjazz. org.

“40 years ago was the rebirth of jazz in Savannah. Ben Tucker and Teddy Adams would be some of the biggest icons of that revival and that movement. Then we go to the Savannah Jazz Festivals, which have been occurring for 40 years, and we highlight the Savannah Jazz Hall of Fame,” said Fogarty. “We have about over 48 amazing world-renowned stars that had roots and ties to Savannah, they either were born here, lived here, or played here.”

Deeply rooted in African traditions, Savannah jazz has evolved through brass bands, vaudeville, blues, big band, combos, and orchestras to take its place in our nation’s jazz pantheon. Following its near demise in 1960 resulting from the ascendency of rhythm ‘n blues and rock ‘n roll, Savannah jazz was reborn in the late 1970s through the efforts of Teddy Adams and the legendary Ben

He cracks on how Jewish he is or isn’t, his friendless comic book nerd friends, and the bottomless pit of laughs: marriage.

The veteran comic has been perfecting his craft since the mid-90s. You can hear the influence of his comedy heroes Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, and Paul Mooney come through in his act. But Mo is Mo, and few are better at comparing and contrasting the smart and the stupid, proven by the roaring laughter of hysterical crowds.

The Montreal garage rock legends give Savannah the gift of a must-see show on a Monday night. Their hook is a unique hybrid of punk and doo-wop, which doesn’t make much sense since the only commonality is both are stripped-down musically. Once you hear it, then it makes all kinds of sense.

DEAD & IN THE WAY @ VICTORY NORTH

Brad Nowell was thisclose to breakout stardom when he overdosed on heroin. Two months later, the eponymous Sublime album was released and went multi-platinum. It spawned a #1 and two #3 singles, unheard of for a ska punk band. Brad is gone, and as cliché as it sounds, the music hasn’t died. Badfish pays proper tribute to an unexpected musical phenomenon.
