welcome to your vacation

You’re here to relax, and we’re here to make that happen Dear Member of our Cape Resorts Family, We are so delighted that another season is upon us and that we get to welcome back our returning guests and meet many new ones. So please make yourself at home. We are here to make you comfortable. When you see someone wearing one of our name tags – whether it be a room attendant, valet, front desk clerk or server – please say “hello.” And if you need something – anything – don’t hesitate to ask. We love having company over to visit. Throughout the pages of the Concierge we have tried to give you all the information you need to explore our offerings and to discover the places in and around town which make Cape May so magical. You will also meet some of the personalities that make our resort special. We invite you to peruse the pages here and hope to see you at our various restaurants, lounges, shops and activities. This season we are especially excited about our new bicycle partnership. The Congress Hall Bicycle Rental will offer improved service and selection including full day or multi-day rentals – with delivery to your property! Our Tommy’s Folly franchise continues to grow with more merchandise in the General Store, the Boutique and the Home stores, and our Sea Spa has added the Aveda line to enhance the treatments it offers. Of course your favorites are here as well: Kids Camp at Congress Hall, frisbee-plated kids’ meals at the Rusty Nail and surprise visits by the Blue Pig himself at The Blue Pig Tavern. We would love to hear from you. Please follow us on Facebook – we have pages for Congress Hall, The Virginia and The Beach Shack and would appreciate your feedback on your stay. This way, we can make it even better next time. We look forward to building our tradition together and hope that 2011 will be a memorable time for you and your family. Thank you for being with us. «For families looking for luxury amenities and personalized service in a relaxed atmosphere Congress Hall is a haven of relaxed elegance, fun, historic charm and timeless luxury. «Providing hospitality since 1816 this iconic hotel, with its great lawn leading down to the Atlantic Ocean, is the pre-eminent Cape May landmark. It is home to a number of major local events, including the annual Fourth of July fireworks. «Congress Hall is a destination in its own right, an oceanfront resort with the vibe of a classic, airy beach house, while also offering the creature comforts and amenities travelers would expect from a world-class hotel.

«You could say John Daily has got the hang of this hospitality business thing, having begun his career in Atlantic City while still in high school. He has been with Congress Hall since March of 2002, and says, “I’ve enjoyed every minute of the success in the last nine years. It’s been my pleasure running this beautiful place and getting to know hundreds of families and our loyal guests.” John prides himself on making every guest experience a positive one, each and every time. “It sounds corny, but making people happy is the best job in the world,” he says. “It’s not always easy, but it’s usually invigorating and satisfying.”

«Appealing to today’s most discriminating traveler, the Virginia Hotel offers luxury accommodations in an intimate environment and a level of personalized service that has set a new standard on the Jersey Shore. «The hotel offers 24 wellappointed guest rooms, exquisite custom furnishings and design touches, fine dining, a chic cocktail lounge with live entertainment, topflight beach service, complimentary continental breakfast delivered to the guest rooms and valet parking. «Ideal for families or groups, the cottages offer amenities such as gourmet kitchens, luxurious bathrooms, plush linens and continental breakfast, which can be enjoyed at the Virginia.

the manager

«Justin Mogavero has been in the hospitality industry for 17 years, quite a feat considering he’s only 30. A graduate of Johnson & Wales, he’s been with Cape Resorts Group for four years. “We have some fascinating guests, and it’s been a pleasure getting to know some of them.” During his downtime in season he likes to hit the beach. In the off-season he travels to omparable hotels and acts as a “mystery shopper,” using his visits to improve the guest experience.

A brief history

A brief history

«Congress Hall was built in 1816 and is regarded as the oldest seashore hotel in America. It was destroyed during the 1878 fire that consumed 35 acres of downtown Cape May before being rebuilt out of brick (a first in the city at the time) in time for the 1879 season. «Affectionately known as the Big House in its early years, the hotel was renamed Congress Hall in 1828 to commemorate owner Thomas Hughes being elected to the US Congress. «The hotel has been visited by four American presidents – Grant, Pierce, Buchanan and Harrison, who made the hotel his summer White House in 1891, taking an office in the first-floor lobby, while working on trying to annex Hawaii. «The hotel was purchased in 1995 by Cape Resorts Group and was reopened in 2002, following a painstaking $25 million renovation.

«Like many Cape May hotels, the Virginia was built following the catastrophic fire of 1878. «It was originally called the Ebbitt House, a name chosen by its first managers, Alfred and Ellen Ebbitt. «The hotel’s heyday came in the early 1890s, when it was regularly mentioned in the society section of the Philadelphia Inquirer. «When Cape May slumped, the Virginia went from a high-class hotel to a rooming house. It was condemned in the 1980s and then bought in 1986 by Cape Resorts Group founder Curtis Bashaw and his family. It was renovated and reopened in 1989.

the details

«For upscale vacationers, particularly families, the Beach Shack is a fresh, new and fun alternative for beachfront vacations. It is a place where people feel comfortable wearing their flip-flops all day long. Long lazy days at the beach and pool flow into nights full of music and laughter at the Rusty Nail before you have even had a chance to rinse the sand from between your toes. «The Rusty Nail, Cape May’s legendary hangout for lifeguards and surfers has been revived with an indoor-outdoor ambiance, live music and a fresh take on beach blanket comfort food.

A brief history

«The Beach Shack began its life as the Coachman Motor Inn in 1966 by Philadelphia builder Jule Hober. «In 1976, construction began on the Rusty Nail bar and restaurant, with a style inspired by the chalets Hober found at the ski resorts he frequented. The Nail’s bar was built in Vermont and shipped here. «The backbone of the Rusty Nail’s business has always been the lifeguards of the Cape May Beach Patrol. «The Coachman and Rusty Nail remained in the Hober family until 2005, when they were sold to Cape Resorts Group, who relaunched the Coachman as the Beach Shack in 2009.

«Sandy Montano Sandy Montano has been associated with the company for nearly 30 years, starting at the Christian Admiral at the age of 15. She serves as renovations and construction project manager for all Cape May and Atlantic City properties, and is also General Manager of the Beach Shack. “I love the diversity of my job, and the physical aspects of working in all of these beautiful structures,” she says.

the details «With a focus on extended stays, the Sandpiper Beach Club is a newly renovated family friendly oceanfront condominium resort with 51 one and two bedroom units, all with full kitchens, living rooms and balconies. Most also enjoy spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. «Lifting it above other condominium rentals, the Sandpiper Beach Club features all of the amenities of a luxury hotel, including an onsite pool, daily housekeeping, full beach service, sauna, concierge service, and an expansive fitness center.

A brief history «The original building shows up on maps dating back to 1878, and was built around 1870 by Richard D. Wood, a wealthy Philadelphia businessman who helped establish Cape May Ocean Wave newspaper and West Jersey Railroad. «In 1940 the property was demolished and replaced by Cape Motel before being bought in 1977 by Robert and Ruth Escher, who enlarged the building to the 65room Sandpiper in the early 1980s. «Since 2005 the Sandpiper has been run by Cape Resorts.

the manager

«This is Charley Gaudio’s fourth year at the Sandpiper, and his 23rd in the hospitality business. “My favorite aspect of the job, besides the interaction with people, is that every day is a new, fresh start. Every day is a new adventure,” he says. He’s also a big fan of the location, since “you can’t beat working at the beach in the summer.” When he’s not assisting guests, you can usually find Charley reading a book or magazine on the beach, or enjoying a cold beverage at The Rusty Nail.

Sometimes you need a change from the beach. All that time spent relaxing on a comfortable beach lounger, being warmed by the sun, dozing and reading, snacking and dreaming, being waited on by attentive staff. It can be a little too much. So for a change of pace, head for the Congress Hall pool

and cabana bar, where you can relax on a comfortable pool lounger, being warmed by the sun, dozing and reading, snacking and dreaming, being waited on by attentive staff. There’s nothing like adding some variety to your vacation, after all. When you cannot choose between a garden setting and an ocean view, the Congress Hall pool and cabana bar is the perfect spot. Surrounded by lush gardens and overlooking the expansive lawn to the ocean, this is the most desired real estate in Cape May. Serving lunch, snacks and drinks, the pool bar facilitates long, lazy,

self-indulgent days. paradise by the pool One guest’s magical memories of his favorite place on Earth « For Chuck Girone, a 59-year-old consulting engineer in the pharmaceutical and biotech fields, from Langhorne, PA the Congress Hall pool isn’t merely a spot to relax or work on a tan. It’s a place that brings out a man’s inner child… and his inner romantic… and his inner dancing machine. I’m thinking of a picture I took of my grandson by the Congress Hall pool. He’s wearing his little sun hat, probably calling me “pops.” The look on his face in that photo… it’s why we go there. Coconut and mint. Those smells remind me of the pool. The best place to sit… I can’t tell you that. I don’t want to give it away. I wouldn’t give up the moments spent there for any amount of money. As you get older, you realize that family is the most important thing. Everything else comes second. In almost ten years of coming to the Congress Hall pool, I don’t remember seeing anything outlandish. Some people in their forties and fifties wear bikinis, but it’s all very tasteful. This is a family-oriented space. None of the honky-tonk you see at other places. The energy of the pool is whatever you want it to be. They play calypso music or smooth jazz – island music. It may make you want to get up and rock a little, in or out of the water, and that’s always fun. I have no problem at all if you want to turn up the tunes and start dancing. I’ve done that myself at the pool – when no one’s around, of course. When I’m here, I feel like I’m at a resort in the Caribbean; it has that feel. Rod Stewart singing “Our Love is Here to Stay”... that song makes me think of the pool. The salad with the crab. That’s what I always get from the cabana bar. My wife gets the one with the shrimp and the salmon. They have such nice salads. We eat our meal on the wood-slatted tables that fit between our beach chairs. I called Congress Hall once to make a reservation. I told them that I really missed being back there by the pool. They said, “Where are you?” I was in Puerto Rico, in a 300-square-foot condo by the beach. They have several showers in the pool area for guests. They are great. Sometimes, I see other people sneaking in. It’s so easy to make friends by the Congress Hall pool. I have no trouble sleeping by the adult pool and, yes, I do dream there. It feels like home. I don’t want to be anywhere else. So when I dream it’s about what I’ve already done that day, with my family, my lovely wife. It’s all happy thoughts. Work, economics, gasoline prices, normal stresses... the pool is the antidote. I usually swim below the surface when I swim. I don’t swim like most people do. I swim below the surface for a bit, across the pool in one breath, and then I come up. I enjoy the feeling. The pool staff is so much more than staff, much more. They are family. I enjoy being in the courtyard by the pool even in the winter time. It’s wonderful how this space is utilized at Christmas and holiday time. There’s a train for the kids, and I bought an Indiana Jones hat from a little market set up there. My grandson loves that hat

our incredible edibles From herbs to livestock, we practice farm to plate... we also think food should be fun

« Lucas Manteca, Cape Resorts Group’s Vice-President of Food & Beverage Operations, on the company’s food philosophy... I’ve been in the restaurant business in one capacity or another since I was 15, and I’ve worked all over the world. It’s a thrill and also humbling for me to bring those experiences to the table here. An everyday place for foodies and a special occasion place for everyone – The Ebbitt Room somehow manages to be both of those things at the same time. A highly-skilled sommelier to personalize your wine selection to your dinner option is a luxury at some places, but that’s just business as usual at The Ebbitt Room. The Blue Pig Tavern is all about comfort food, tavern atmosphere, and casual service.

The comfort of our guests is the priority for every one of us. We want this to be your home away from home. Breakfast at the Blue Pig is a great way to start the day, especially outside. The light, the air, the food and the coffee – the coffee is great! As hard as we work at the Rusty Nail to provide guests with great food and a fun environment, one of the best things about the place has nothing to do with us. It’s the magical location. If you can’t relax at The Rusty Nail, you may not be able to relax at all. Getting customers to relax and enjoy the seafood shack vibe is our mission. It’s a take-your-shoes-off, sit-by-the-fire-pit and have-a-fish-taco kind of a place. Beach Plum Farm isn’t just about the vegetables we grow – we raise livestock, too.

And it’s also about the herbs in your soup and the muddled fresh fruit in your drinks. Beach Plum Farm is like the cog in the wheel of all of our venues. Speaking of muddled fresh fruit from the farm, we don’t just use it in our cocktails and in our new line of mocktails, we use it in the lemonades and iced teas that we sell at Tommy’s Folly Coffee Shop. We constantly work to accommodate not only the palates but any dietary restrictions our guests may have by offering the freshest and most innovative food and drinks possible. I love to think that the kids who visit our properties today will come back years from now and feel connected to this place, that they will have lifelong memories that were created here. My daughter’s favorite thing is to get a cookie from Tommy’s Folly whenever she visits Congress Hall, which is quite often. It makes me feel good to know that this is a positive memory she’ll have for life. We want to create those kinds of memories for every single one of our guests. The connection I feel to Beach Plum Farm is incredibly strong. It’s amazing to have such a great resource available not only to our family of restaurants, but as a tie to the Cape May community. I value relaxing with my family whenever possible. If I’m not actually working, I’m thinking about it or talking to my wife about it. I don’t know how to do it any other way. This business is also a lifestyle, but lucky for me, it’s one that I love. As different as our three venues are, they have the most important things in common: they give us the opportunity to deliver great dining experiences to our guests, ranging from really casual to special occasion, and they allow us to showcase the local produce from Beach Plum Farm. Exceeding customer expectations is a great goal to build your day around, and that’s what we strive to do at each venue, every day. Above: A sign at Beach Plum Farm is evidence of our commitment to locally sourced foods.

the blue pig tavern Inside or out, night or day, it’s a special place to be «Victoria Hernandez, the Night Manager at the Blue Pig Tavern, on classic comfort food...

«

To book a table for breakfast, lunch or dinner at The Blue Pig Tavern, call (609) 884-8422. For more information visit www.congresshall.com.

For ambience, you can’t beat the Blue Pig’s garden at night in the summer. The twinkly lights are like stars, but closer. And it’s somewhat secluded, yet still in the midst of everything. People are drawn by the garden seating in the warmer weather. You can people-watch, you can smell the ocean, you can hear the seagulls. No one seems to mind waiting for a table. In the summer, the garden is where you want to be, and in the winter it’s in the cozy dining room by the fire. We’ve got you covered all year-round. For a hotel restaurant, we see a lot of repeat customers, both locals and visitors. I would describe us as “upscale tavern,” with traditional foods in a comfortable atmosphere. Some locals come in every couple of weeks, start with a cocktail in The Brown Room, try different Blue Plate Specials, and you may even see them later in The Boiler Room. I think the Blue Pig for breakfast is Cape May’s bestkept secret. The signature Eggs Benedict with crabmeat is a traditional favorite, with a bythe-shore twist. A cappuccino or espresso and you’re ready for your day. Customers love our La Colombe coffee so much they want to make it at home. So we sell it at the hostess stand and in our coffee shop, Tommy’s Folly. Our service is informal but informed. We love kids. Congress Hall is so grand that people may get the impression kids aren’t

welcome, which couldn’t be further from the truth. They get their own menus, crayons, takehome Blue Pig Tavern cups, and you never know when Blue, the Pig’s mascot, will show up. Our burgers take the cake – we grind the beef fresh in-house, and it makes all the difference. It’s amazing to me how many families, two and three generations at a time, come to celebrate special occasions with us. It’s nice to know that this is where they want to be when making memories. If there is anything more relaxing than sitting in front of a fire with a glass of wine while you wait for your dinner, I don’t know what it is.

the ebbitt room Cape May’s finest dining experience offers so many ways to savor the moment «Jahanna Edson, Food & Beverage Manager of The Ebbitt Room, on the merits of trying something different... If you want to know where to go, follow your server. You ask them for food and drink recommendations, why not ask them what they do during their downtime? You’ll usually find our restaurant staff right here on their night off, relaxing on the front porch, eating, drinking and people-watching. They know better than anyone that the Virginia porch is the place to be. The shrimp and chorizo ravioli with cilantro appetizer is my favorite new menu item. The pasta is made in-house – it’s The Ebbitt Room, after all. Pretend cocktails, real ingredients. We’ve expanded our mocktail menu. It’s impossible not to experiment with the amazingly fresh ingredients we get from Beach Plum Farm, and why should the food have all the fun? I’m very proud of our cocktail menu, a mix of classics revisited like the Sidecar and the Harvey Wallbanger, along with Virginia signature infusions, more contemporary offerings. If your food is organic, why not your vodka? We offer organic vodkas and gins, and biodynamic wines from the tri-state area. It may not occur to you to put macerated sugar snap peas in your drink, but we did. Our Snappirinha, made with gin, lime, club soda and macerated sugar snap peas, is a must-try. There’s a league of locals who have discovered the magic of our lounge. They come in every week or so, get comfy in front of the

fire or on the porch, order small plates and glasses of wine, and make an evening of it without setting foot in the dining room. If your children are in our Kids Kamp, The Ebbitt Room is a great place to escape for a romantic evening. The Richmond Room offers all the style and elegance of our main dining room, except you get it all to yourself. If you didn’t know you can get a full-course dinner on our front porch, you do now. Open your mind, and then open your mouth. We offer the most contemporary foods in combinations the typical customer may not have sampled before. People may hesitate to try cauliflower soup with white chocolate, but they’re never disappointed once they do.

By the age of ten, I was helping my grandmother in the kitchen at the Chalfonte Hotel, where she worked for many years. I knew I wanted to be a chef by the time I was sixteen. It’s a blessing to love what you do for a living every day. If I had to explain the Nail to someone who had never experienced it, I’d say it’s not a white tablecloth kind of place. It’s laidback, it’s a family place, and your dollar goes a long way. I don’t want people to leave here hungry. Run it like you own it. That’s my philosophy when it comes to my job. I’ve been in this business for a long, long time, and if you’re not going to treat the place where you work like you would your own, you’re wasting your time and your customers’ time. The stuff that you overhear from the customers is just as important, if not more important, than what they will say to your face. I’m always listening to what the customers are saying – always. The Nail was always the place to go for the coldest beer in town. Even though it’s still the best place for a couple of beers, it’s also great to see what a family place it’s become. You see both visiting families and local ones enjoying the fire pit, the music and the food. I don’t know whose idea it was for those Frisbee plates for the kids, but it’s genius. The kids love it, and their moms and dads get a chance to relax and unwind. When you have Sea Isle City locals driving down to the Nail

for dinner, you know you’re doing something right. Cape May locals are the best locals, but they aren’t the only locals. Someone on vacation may drive a distance to eat somewhere new, but when a local does it, that’s something else. Eating with your hands – burgers, nachos, fish tacos – while you’ve got your feet in the sand is a really special thing. Anyone can make a burger at home, but to eat it while you’re sitting by a fire pit listening to reggae, well – that’s not a burger you’re paying for, that’s an experience.

a drink at the rusty nail What makes this place so special? Count the reasons.

«Rick Ogen, Bar & Beverage Manager of The Rusty Nail, on a very special experience… A three-dollar beer is the common ground between an astrophysicist and a plumber. Everyone is worried about what the kids are getting into, about making a dinner reservation, about doing the shopping. And then I watch them slowly discover that the sky is orange and purple or some color they could never buy at Lowe’s. That’s the magic of the Nail. Where else would you go at 5:05pm? We discourage shoes. I don’t think anyone offers what we do. You can walk around all day without shoes, and no one is going to care. We have the coldest beer in Cape May, but I hope every bar steps it up, and has great music and cold beer. Then the customer wins. Have your fancy-pants dinner one night, but on the night you don’t feel like showering after the beach, come on over. Fire is primal, so people can’t help but like it. Our fire pit is the only of its kind in South Jersey; there isn’t even one in Atlantic City. Before TV, people used to gather around the fireplace; they feel comfortable here. Just like they can’t control the dolphins or the sunset, people can’t control fire. It’s always different. A Rusty Nail is Scotch and Drambuie, something Pop-Pop would drink. So we add local honey and fresh whipping cream. It’s fun to be the place where everyone can let their hair down. This summer we’ll have a margarita list you won’t see this side of Acapulco. A guy doesn’t need to have game to bring

a date here. Just invite her, pick her up, and be polite. The Rusty Nail will take care of the rest. We’re not boom-boom-boom music or loud, thumping DJs. We’re about relaxing, melodic music and, at night in the lounge, real, live rock ’n’ roll that still allows you to have a conversation. If you want to jump around like a knucklehead, go ahead, that’s right down the street. We’ll be here when you get back. I would put this spot up against anywhere else on the planet. Are you kidding me? Shorts and T-shirts are about more than just attire. Endless summer is the vibe at the Nail. The characters in that movie were intent on finding the perfect wave. We want to help people find the perfect day. The first girl to say yes to a dance, that’s what it’s like when someone puts his beer on the brick of the fire pit. Soon enough, everyone wants to join in. People spend the whole day at the Nail, but not everyone can spend a day drinking. I’d venture to say we have the widest selection of non-alcoholic drinks – flavored iced tea, mocktails, sparkling water, and muddled fruit from Beach Plum Farm. We even have specialty kiddie cocktails – their eyes light up when they get the opportunity to be big people. An afternoon at the Nail is the antidote to what’s ailing you. I’m very blessed. I’m allowed the opportunity to help people relax, and I look forward to it. I honestly don’t think everyone knows how special the Rusty Nail is.

Our Perfect Day in Cape May Greg and Maureen Pringle, Monmouth Beach, New Jersey. Favorite time of year: We’ve visited Cape May during every season, but fall is definitely our favorite. It’s still warm enough to enjoy bike riding and the outdoor craft fairs, antique shows and festivals. Plus, we were married in Cape May in October! Best place to start the day: We always start our day in Cape May with breakfast in the lounge of the Virginia Hotel. It’s especially nice in the winter, with the fireplace going, a very relaxing way to start the day. Favorite activity: Walking along the mall and visiting our two favorite stores, Atlantic Books and Love the Cook. We always find a special book or something unique for the kitchen. We usually end the afternoon with a walk along the beach. Favorite dinner spot: The Ebbitt Room, so romantic! A beautiful restaurant. Favorite drinks spot: Cabanas on a Sunday afternoon and The Brown Room for a before or after-dinner drink – we love the entertainment and comfortable couches. It was the meeting spot for friends after our wedding, where they held an impromptu singalong with the piano player. Favorite beach: Sunset Beach. We love looking for Cape May diamonds and visiting the shops. All the tables at our wedding had Cape May diamonds sprinkled on them.

a night in the boiler room A stylish underground vibe in Congress Hall’s basement, where fun is always on the menu

«Shane Boyd, The Boiler Room’s Beverage Supervisor, on mixing and shaking it up... The Boiler Room clientele plays a large part in keeping Tommy Bahama in business. “What’s on tap?” is a question I’m used to, even though we don’t offer draft beer, yet. On a busy night, I get into such a zone that it’s almost like I don’t hear the music anymore. Good thing it’s always great music, thanks to Myra Vassian, our Activities Director. When a guy orders an Appletini, I look around for the girl who is with him. Kiddie Karaoke is a major blast in The Boiler Room. The kids take it very seriously – almost as seriously as their parents. And they’re usually way more talented than the grownups. The best thing about working with my wife is that she moves as fast as I do, and we know each other’s next move, so it keeps us from bumping into one another. The worst thing about working with my wife is… not up for discussion. It’s always great when a wedding reception in the ballroom keeps the party going by heading downstairs to The Boiler Room. A bunch of people all dressed up and celebrating a major life event makes for a really good time. We get an awesome mix of people – hotel guests and locals, younger and older, people who know it and people who stumble upon it, good dancers and not-so-good dancers… We have mirrored walls in The Boiler Room, and that’s caused a problem once or twice, with people attempting to check out that “other room.”

cocktail hour at the ebbitt room Sip in our lounge or outside on the beautiful porch... either way, this is quality time! «Leo Morjakovs , The Ebbitt Room bartender, on peas, trees, and animal print… If everyone is happy, the bartender is happy…know what I mean? I try to give as much of my good energy as I can to the customers. Sitting by a fireplace can make people feel warm, and it can warm the heart, too. But when I have to light the [Ebbitt Room] fire, I say: “Oh my God, not again.” A couple of years ago, I had an accident. There was too much smoke. Everyone had to leave the building. But the fire department came in on time. And I still light that fire when it’s cold. It’s part of the ambiance. This is the classiest bar in Cape May. I like this company. I’ve been here eight years. Maybe my children will work here some day. Sugar snap peas are an unusual ingredient. But they are sweet and can make a cocktail really nice. I make all the craziest cocktails. The best place to be in the summer is on the porch. You can enjoy the live classic music, enjoy the happy hour, get an appetizer. And you can watch people walking by. This is a beautiful thing. Just being in the Virgina Hotel is special. Being here helps bring people closer together. One customer told me I could probably get a really nice job in New York City. I don’t want to go anywhere. I love it here. The palm trees in the lounge make me feel like I’m on some kind of tropical island. Everything is coming from the [Beach Plum] farm – raspberries, strawberries, basil, – so many different ingredients. I don’t discourage falling asleep, although other employees might. The red couch is so comfortable, the people who sit there can fall asleep. It’s like cooking food or being a chef, determining how much salt and pepper - that’s the science of measuring alcohol and juice for a drink. But if you have your own way of making a cocktail, I want you to come and talk to me. I want to keep people happy. I’m the bartender, so I shouldn’t say, “Oh my God, these drinks are the best in town,” but they really are that good.

I don’t want alcohol every time I go out. I want something nice and different, and not just a club soda. I have no problem drinking a mocktail. If it’s good, I’ll have a second and a third. Not many places in Cape May offer mocktails. The Ebbitt Room does. We have the best wine in town. That’s my opinion. I come here on my days off. I come every Monday. I bring my kids and have beef sliders and oysters. My kids get a hold of some ice, and drop it in the palm tree planters, and I have to clean up after them, and I still come to the Ebbitt Room. I am not a big coffee drinker, but if I’m going to mix it with Kahlua and vanilla vodka, that’s just happiness. The espresso martini is my favorite. I love zebra print sofas. I never get sick of animal print. People say to me: “Leo, are you getting claustrophobic behind this bar?” because it is so tiny. But I say, “No, I can be here all the time.” And it’s nice having everything I need so close by. This is a second home. I want people to recognize me, and I want to recognize them. It’s always nice to meet new people. I don’t get sick of telling them I am from Latvia. “Where?” they ask. Ha, it’s a Baltic state. I like to see where the customers are coming from, too. I am proud of the atmosphere here. The atmosphere makes this place romantic. People come back and talk about how they got married here fifteen years ago. It makes me feel good to be a part of that.

The Ginger Lemonade You shouldn’t have to drink liquor to savor the sensory delights of a wellmixed drink. That’s our philosophy, which is why we have added some carefully chosen mocktails to our drinks lists. At The Ebbitt Room, bartender Leo likes to recommend the Ginger Lemonade as an alternative to the rather drab choice of club soda and lime. It’s a blend of fresh ginger, juice from a freshly squeezed lemon, mint from Beach Plum Farm, and ginger ale.

an evening at the brown room It’s known as Cape May’s Living Room for a reason

Our Perfect Day in Cape May

«Steve Augustine, Brown Room bartender of seven years, on mojitos, hospitality, and the best seat at the bar… There is no TV in the Brown Room bar, which is a great thing. People pick up on the good energy of the staff. Everyone who works there has been there for years, so we know each other well and we work well together. We make fun of each other. The customers love that. I’m really comfortable with the physical bar - the marble, the dark wood. It’s my nest. People watching is better than cable. You can flip from a drama to a comedy to a tragedy, without leaving the bar. The U-shape of the bar, and the closeness of it, forces people to cross-pollinate, to talk to one another. And, turns out, someone always knows somebody else’s cousin. There are always six degrees of separation. I love the adventure of my job. Mojitos... people love hearing that word. It’s like a domino effect. As soon as one is being made, I need to make ten more. I always look forward to Darren McDonald [right], the piano player. He has people up and dancing. He’ll play “Sweet Caroline” three times in one evening, and he manages to get the same reaction every time.” I let other folks talk. I listen. The best seats are on the left side of the

Barrie and Bob Silverman, Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania. Favorite time of year: Summer, although we stay frequently from late June through September. Best way to start the day: A delicious breakfast at The Blue Pig Tavern, followed by a walk on the beach from Congress Hall all the way to Cape May Point. Favorite activity: In the late afternoon, we like to go to the Congress Hall pool for a dip in the water and sometimes enjoy a glass of wine or cold beer. Favorite dinner spot: Fresco’s, The Washington Inn, The Black Duck and The Blue Pig Tavern. Favorite drinks spot: Our favorite drink is definitely a great bottle of cabernet from Collier’s liquor store. We have our favorite bottles but also love to try some new ones they recommend. Favorite beach: We like to relax on the beach right in front of Congress Hall.

New Cocktail Classics The Brown Room was the first bar opened in Cape May after the Prohibition law was repealed, so you won’t be surprised to know that the cocktail menu features the American classics. However, we’ve mixed it up with new favorites, such as Congressional White Cosmo (Ketel One, Cointreau, white cranberry, lime juice), Cucumber-Mint Gin and Tonic (Hendrick’s gin and tonic with lime juice, mint and cucumber) and Natural Vanilla Mojito (vanilla liqueur, rum, lime juice, mint). bar, under the palm tree. You get a panoramic view of the room, you can see everyone who comes in, and you can choose who you want to connect with. It’s my job to link conversations. I’m a facilitator. If I wasn’t bartending, I would be the guy with the metal detector and headphones on the beach getting a tan. Or the guy feeding the giraffes at the Cape May County Zoo. But there is no job I’d leave the Brown Room for. I’ve worked other places, but I prefer the Brown Room. It’s a great hang-out. I have it so sweet where I am. It’s the right spot for me. I try not to let line-jumpers disrupt the flow. Seeing a new hairstyle, that’s what it was

like when the carpet went from zebra print to tiger print. Everybody could tell something was different, but they weren’t quite sure. The piano in the center of the room doesn’t work. It’s got all the strings, but it’s been rigged so people can’t play. But people still play with the keys all the time. There’s some history to it – I think it’s from the 1800s. I guess that now it’s just a place for people to put their drinks. Everybody is always in an upbeat, optimistic mood, and that makes it romantic. The bartender will look out for you, if you’re polite. I only have fourteen seats around the bar, so if I see someone about to pay a check, I give a heads-up to my regulars that these seats are about to open. People will not compare the Cosmo they

had here to the Cosmo they had there as much as they’ll notice how they were treated, how included they were. That’s what it’s all about. It’s a misconception that The Brown Room is haunted. Such a cross-section of people come in here. It’s diverse. Blue collar folks come in and feel totally comfortable. In the summer, there’s a nice generational mix. There’s a nice mix of locals and tourists. People come from Europe, Australia, Canada, and it’s nice to get that outside energy. At some point, everyone makes their way through The Brown Room bar. There’s some ego involved. You work in the Brown Room, and most people know who you are, so there’s that little gratification. I’m proud to be a face of The Brown Room.

My Perfect Day in Cape May

Family Karaoke in The Boiler Room Thanks to the success of last year’s karaoke double-header in The Boiler Room, we are delighted to bring back Terry’Oke for everyone on Thursday nights! Family Karaoke will again run from 6pm to 8pm in Congress Hall’s basement nightclub, and that will be followed by karaoke for the grownups, from 9:30pm to midnight. As always, please remember the strict rules for Terry’Oke: 1. We don’t care how bad your voice is – just get up there and enjoy yourself; 2. What happens in The Boiler Room stays in The Boiler Room.

Congress Hall Bicycle Rentals There’s no better way to get around Cape May than by bike. The city is flat, very pretty, and, well, you don’t want to be stuck in summer traffic! This year we are delighted to be running our own bike rental business, in partnership with the Roth family (Anita and Tom are pictured), who have been serving the beach community since 1886 (previously as Roth’s Candyland and lately as Cape Island Bikes). A range of singles, doubles, children’s bikes and surreys (along with helmets) will be available at the Congress Hall Bike Shop. Guests of Cape Resorts Group can pre-order rentals and have them delivered and picked up at the property where you are staying. The front desk agents at each property, as well as the CRG Concierge at Congress Hall, can assist you in setting up your rental. Our list of recommended rides? To the lighthouse at Cape May Point, Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May, the Emlen Physick Estate on Washington Street, Sunset Beach at the end of Sunset Boulevard, and Bay Springs Alpaca Farm, at the end of New England Road. Happy trails!

«Andrew Skilton, Abington, PA, Rusty Nail General Manager and Food & Beverage Manager at Congress Hall. Favorite time of year: Late summer/early fall. The water is warmest and it’s the best potential for wave-producing hurricanes. Also, when the crowds die down it means an extra day off to enjoy the beach! Best place to start the day: The patio of the Blue Pig Tavern for the signature Eggs Benedict. For something lighter, I love Coffee Tyme on Beach Avenue for an iced red eye and a muffin – Sue, the owner, puts a lot of love into those muffins. Favorite activity: Surfing Poverty Beach when it’s firing. When it’s flat, relaxing on the beach at Broadway with my fiancé and friends. We’re there from 9-6 on our days off, with a cooler full of treats. Favorite dinner spot: The Ebbitt Room, hands down. The menu is fresh and inventive, offering more breadth than your typical Cape May fine dining restaurant. Favorite drinks spot: The Rusty Nail is the most happening spot in Cape May. I like to sit outside and listen to the nightly entertainment after a day at the beach. That’s the best part – I can walk across the street from the beach to wet my whistle. Favorite beach: Poverty Beach has the most challenging waves, but the rockpile at Broadway is a great place to watch the dolphins – I never tire of that.

My Perfect Day in Cape May «Rob Faber, Congress Hall guest, Millstone Township, NJ Favorite time of year: Summer – it can’t get here fast enough! I’ve been coming to Congress Hall for about seven years with my wife, Judy, and our three kids, Sarah, Ian and Jake. The hotel manager John Daily always makes sure that everything is perfect for our stay. Best place to start the day: A tasty breakfast at The Mad Batter. Favorite activity: We rent bicycles at Congress Hall and ride all over town, along the beach and promenade, and all the way out to the lighthouse. Favorite dinner spot: It would have to be 410 Bank Street. It has the best blackened prime rib I have ever had! Favorite drinks spot: The Brown Room at Congress Hall is the best place in town. We usually order Dirty Goose martinis or Patron Silver on the rocks. Favorite beach: It’s great to be right across from Congress Hall.

Fourth of July Picnic on Congress Hall lawn ON July 4 Congress Hall’s famous old hotel lawn becomes a patriotic playground, offering good food, games for the kids, live Dixieland jazz and a performance by the Congress Hall Festival Choir. As darkness approaches, thousands gather to watch a fantastic fireworks display, put on with the generous help of the City of Cape May and the Chamber of Commerce. Reserve your seat for our gourmet Lobster Bake, or feast on the All-American Picnic. Call (609) 884-8421.

My Perfect Day in Cape May « Jeanni Seetoo, Baltimore, MD, Director of Revenue Management, Cape Resorts Group – she’s been with the company for 22 years. Favorite time of year: Fall – the light is amazing, the temperature warm, and it’s not crowded. I also love December when the town is decorated for the holidays. It’s especially nice to see the decorations go up around our collection of hotels – it gets me in the holiday spirit. Best place to start the day: Family breakfast at George’s on Beach Avenue – bagel and lox and hot tea. Then we stroll across the street for a day of boogieboarding and watching the dolphins swim by. Favorite activity: Taking a long walk along the beach to the lighthouse with my love, Terry. Favorite dinner spot: I have several. The Ebbitt Room – it’s nice to relax in one of the front parlors before experiencing the fantastic food and service. The Black Duck is a more casual environment and never disappoints. The Rusty Nail is our favorite family restaurant – the food and atmosphere are great, and the kids love to play in the sandbox. Favorite drinks spot: I don’t drink, but I do enjoy a mocktail on The Ebbitt Room veranda – a great place to order a snack and people-watch. The Rusty Nail would be my second choice – they always have fun music. Favorite beach: Steger’s – I grew up on that beach. My mother would take me, my sister and brothers there in the morning and we’d stay until it was nearly dark.

How to Get the Best out of a Day in Cape May Stephen Turner is Congress Hall’s Front Office Manager. He and his colleagues will help you not only with our ‘on-campus’ activities, but here Stephen introduces the guide to our favorite off-campus activities, for families, for couples, for everyone! Family activities on a rainy vacation day can be challenging, but there is always something to do around here to keep everybody happy. There’s the Cape May Lighthouse, the World War II Lookout Tower Museum and Memorial, the Aviation Museum, and the Physick Estate.

1. Cape May County Zoo When it comes to bargain activities in the Cape May vicinity, it’s hard to beat the zoo. Admission is free, although donations at the entrance are appreciated. And for that bargain-basement price you get 200 species of a total of 550 animals, a reptile room, world of birds and an African Savanna on 80 beautiful acres. There’s a picnic-perfect park surrounding it, with a jungle gym for the kids. Open daily from 10am-4:45pm, just off Exit 11 on the Parkway. Call (609) 465-5271.

59

4. Historic Cold Spring Village Experience the Cape May of 200 years ago at this open-air living museum. A mere sevenminute drive from town, yet worlds away. A combination of interactive, educational, and hands-on activities set amongst restored homes and idyllic shade trees bring the past front and center. Events like Civil War reenactments make the experience even more compelling. Call (609) 898-2300 or visit www. hcsv.org.

5. Historic District Walking Tour We always recommend this 90-minute stroll around town to those who like their history up-close and personal. You get your own entertaining and knowledgeable MAC guide to lead you through Cape May’s lovely Historic District. Cape May’s churches, bed and breakfasts, and guest houses will never look the same to you again. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Call (609) 8845404, or visit www.capemaymac.org.

6. Whale and Dolphin Watching The thrill never gets old when you catch sight of a dolphin (or several) frolicking in the waters off Cape May. The folks at Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center will get you as close as you can get to these magnificent creatures. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue, across from the Lobster House. For directions or more information, call (609) 898-0055 or visit them on the web at www.capemaywhalewatch.com.

7. Cape May Family Treasure Hunt Keeping the kids occupied while on vacation is one thing. Keeping them occupied and learning is what we recommend with this educational scavenger hunt from MAC. Packets for the family are available for the wallet-friendly price of $5 at the Washington Street Mall information booth or Hill House office during hours of operation. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www. capemaymac.org.

8. Antiquing If antiquing is your thing, it’s a good thing you’re in Cape May, where antiquing is taken very seriously. We suggest the following treasure troves: (all 609 area code): Antiques Emporia, 405 West Perry Street (8983332), Bridgetowne Antiques, Broadway and Mechanic (884-8107), Out of The Past Antiques, 394 Myrtle Avenue, corner of Perry (884-3357), Cape May Antique Center, 1228 Route 109 (898-4449).

9. Cape May Lighthouse and Museum Shop If you’re looking for a fun way to get your exercise in, jog up the 199 steps of the lighthouse. The view from the top is worth the walk, but feel free to reward yourself for your effort with a stop at the Museum Shop for a souvenir, book, video or other maritime item. Admission to the Visitors’ Orientation Center is free. Tower admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

Don’t forget the arcades – there are two of them, in case you need to divide and conquer. Not many visitors know we’ve got a worldclass zoo up the road, and even fewer know we’ve got our very own alpaca farm. Not many vacation destinations can say that! Biking is big around here, but you can see plenty just walking around town. The MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities has both guided and self-guided tours, or you can take the kids along and do the Family Treasure Hunt. If romance is what you’re looking for, Cape May has Broadway-class theatre, carriage rides, and three excellent wineries. Even antiquing is romantic with the right person. Take it outside with the amazing variety of outdoor activities – fishing, parasailing, golf – both regular and miniature – kayaking, whale-watching and horseback riding.

2. Beachcombing at the Cove This is not just a walk on the beach. See more than you ever saw before in the company of a naturalist from the Nature Center of Cape May as you explore the ocean, beach and dunes of the Cove. It’s a perfect way to spend a Sunday morning, starting at 9am. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and can be purchased in advance at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth, or on the day at the Second Avenue Pavilion on the promenade.

3. Bay Springs Alpaca Farm Cape May has a lot to offer any vacationer, but you may not be expecting an alpaca farm. But we’ve got that, too, and what a great little jaunt it is. Barbara and Warren Nuessle keep their cool creatures near the end of lovely New England Road, and you can visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Get acquainted with the grazing alpacas, or shop the store to see the lovely wares. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit bayspringsalpacas.com.

10. Tidal Marsh Tour by Kayak Explore Cape May County’s most beautiful and untouched salt marsh via sit-on-top kayaks. It’s a great way to see nesting ospreys, herons, egrets, and assorted crabs. There are two options to choose from: Aqua Trails at 1600 Delaware Avenue in the Nature Center (609-884-5600, www. aquatrails.com) and Miss Chris Marina (609-884-3351, www.misschrismarina.com).

12. Aviation Museum At its peak during WWII, the building that houses The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum accommodated 222 planes and 17,000 takeoffs and landings per month. The awe factor is still in place, where the building now houses a wonderful collection of planes and helicopters. Located just a few minutes north of Cape May, the museum is open daily from 9am-5pm. Call (609) 8868787 or visit www.usnasw.org.

13. Emlen Physick Estate Tour A visit to Cape May is not complete without a stop at this fascinating place. A tour of the Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s only Victorian house museum, is always both an entertaining and educational experience. Catch a glimpse of the Victorian past of Cape May through the lives of the Physick family. Tours cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

11. World War II Lookout Tower The restored Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. You can climb to the sixth floor and relive the homeland defense efforts of World War II. Entrance fee is $6 for adults and $2.50 for children. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit MAC online at www.capemaymac.org.

14. Sunset Beach They call it this for a reason, and we always encourage visitors to visit this special part of Cape May. There is a moving sunset ceremony each day from May until September, while veterans’ casket flags are lowered to the strains of “God Bless America” and the sun sinks beyond the concrete ship jutting from the sea. Food is available at Sunset Beach’s Grill, pay a visit to the gift shop, play some miniature golf, or search the beach for Cape May diamonds.

61

My Perfect Day in Cape May «Stephanie Hughes, Beach Park, IL, Tommy’s Folly Clerk and Barista 15. Miniature Golf So there is golf, which must be taken seriously, or miniature golf, which absolutely must not. Miniature golf is all putting, all the time, and even the worst golfers among us can manage a par at some of the town’s fabulous mini golf courses. Cape May Miniature Golf on Jackson Street offers a lush landscape of sculpted greens and real sand traps. The tropical-themed ice cream oasis named Cocomoe’s is connected next to the course. There’s mini-golf available up by the ocean at Ocean Putt, on the corner of Beach and Jackson, or a bit farther inland on Bayshore Road in North Cape May. Don’t forget about the mini golf course at the shops at Sunset Beach.

16. Horseback Riding At Hidden Valley There’s no view of the world that quite matches that from the back of a horse, and you can take lessons in this pastime of heroes and kings under the watchful gaze of Nancy, the toughest, but ultimately the most lovable instructor you could ever hope for. Call Hidden Valley Ranch, located on New England Road, at (609) 8848205 for more information.

17. Tennis The William J. Moore Tennis Club – named after the first black (as well as the oldest) tennis pro in America – rents rackets, balls, and courts. It’s located next to the Physick Estate and there are always a variety of local characters up for a game, match, or set. The courts are open to the public daily for just $10 per hour and a half. For more information call (609) 884-8986.

Favorite time of year: Definitely the fall. It’s not too warm, it’s not too cold, it’s not too crowded, and the leaves are changing as a bonus – it’s beautiful. Best place to start the day: A good breakfast at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. I especially like the little silver dollar pancakes. Favorite activity: Strolling and shopping on the Washington Street Mall. I do some actual shopping if I have money to spare, and I settle for window shopping if I don’t! Favorite dinner spot: I’m a Chinese food fan, so I have to go with Cape Orient in Washington Commons. I start with Crab Rangoon and then the Sweet and Sour Chicken. Favorite drinks spot: I’m not a big drinker, but I do like to go out for a glass of wine once in a while. I go to The Rusty Nail in the summer, and Cabanas or The Ugly Mug in the off-season. Favorite beach: Higbee Beach is my absolute favorite. It’s quiet, there are beautiful trees, and my husband John and I like to take our puggle, Payton.

18. Parasail It may seem crazy, but it feels oh so serene, and no daredevil license is required to let your body rise 500 feet above the ocean. Parasailing allows you to soar through the air with a bird’s-eye view of Cape May that you won’t soon forget, and has become quite the popular pastime. The boat captains are Coast Guard certified and extremely safe. Choose from East Coast Parasail on(609) 898-8359; and Atlantic Parasail, (609) 522-1869.

19. Arcade Whether you’ve got kids in tow or you’re just a kid at heart, a trip to the beachfront is not the same without a visit to the arcade. There’s nothing like flashing lights, beeps, bells, buzzers, and video games to help you relive great childhood memories or to create new ones. Cape May Arcade has two locations, one on Beach Avenue at Convention Hall and a smaller one at Beach Avenue and Jackson Street.

20. Carriage Ride Cape May Carriage Company has been touring visitors and locals around Cape May since 1983 in the most unique, relaxing and romantic way possible – via horse and carriage. Half-hour tours on weekends in spring and fall, and daily in the summer, weather permitting, of course. Cape May Carriage Company is based at Ocean and Washington Street. Call (609) 884-4466 or visit www.capemaycarriage.com for more information.

These are the places that kids remember forever, with amusement rides for little kids, big kids, and the kid in all of us. Or beat the heat by splashing around a water park or two all day. With over 100 rides and attractions, if you can’t amuse yourself here, you’re not trying. Call (609) 522-3900, or visit www. moreyspiers.com

25. Fishing Cape May is not just a lovely little Victorian town – it’s one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in the US. And sports-fishing is big business, too, not to mention lots of fun. Murderer’s Row is South Jersey Marina’s topnotch selection of boats, staffed with crews who know these waters better than anyone. And stop by Jim’s Bait and Tackle on Route 109 (look for the giant shark head) by the harbor for all your bait and tackle needs.

26. Nature Trails Put on your comfiest walking shoes and expect to be knocked out by the beautiful scenes you’ll encounter on the nature trails next to the lighthouse in the Cape May Point State Park. Color-marked by level of difficulty, there are several trails weaving through ponds, dunes, marsh and forest, and most have wooden walkways. The tranquil setting of these trails will make you wish even the longest one was just a little bit longer.

Your shopping questions answered

tommy’s folly general store Filled with everything you need on vacation, and we do mean everything!

jewelry too! Do you buy fun jewelry in all price ranges? I do! We have an amazing range of jewelry in every price range. We have items that cost under $30 and all the way up to $300.

We chatted with Rachel Elvgren, the buyer for Tommy’s Folly Boutique and Home, and we asked her to reveal the questions that people most ask. So now you won’t have to... Where do you get you inspiration when choosing designers for Tommy’s Folly Boutique? The lifestyle of Cape May and Congress Hall inspire my choices for designers. I look for designers that make high quality pieces that are pretty, but won’t break the bank.

I love jewelry that sparkles! Can I wear sparkles during the day or do I have to save them for night-time? Diamonds and Denim! Absolutely. You can wear sparkle during the day! My daughter and son love the Blue Pig. Are there items for them in Tommy’s Folly? We have a lot of fun blue pig kids items, like a yo-yo, a blue pig stuffed animal and other toys and games.

What sets Tommy’s Folly Boutique apart from other boutiques in Cape May? We have an amazing range of prices and only carry truly special items that are hard to find.

Are you drawn to certain designers? For the beach I love the line we have. Chach and Letarte has been a fun addition. What color and style is big this year? Pink is definitely the color for the summer, a rosy happy pink. I have seen a lot more long dresses, skirts and beach coverups than ever before and I think a lot of women will be happy about that! My husband and I enjoy all the fine dining in Cape May, but I never know what to wear. Any suggestions? Cape May can be breezy at night, especially if you want to go for a walk on the boardwalk after dinner, so I would suggest a tunic with white jeans and wedge sandals. Add some sparkly

the rooms, including the fluffy pillows and comforters. You can even order the amazing mattresses the hotel uses if you really want to take home your vacation experience! We carry the dishes from the Blue Pig Tavern, the coffee mugs, and napkins. We also have artwork from the Congress Hall and our custom candles that smell so good! You can even get the votives that we have in the Brown Lounge and the pillows from the Brown Lounge too!

I am getting married at Congress Hall. Do you have any special mementos I could give my bridal party? We have great cufflinks for the groomsmen to wear and bowties as well. We have silver and gold Congress Hall charms that would make the perfect bridesmaid’s gift. I love the decorating and style of Congress Hall. Are any of the items in Congress Hall for sale? We actually opened our very own home decor store, Tommy’s Folly Home, last summer to address precisely this question. The Home store carries the bedding from

Are you open year-round with styles for all seasons? We are open yearround and carry winter sweaters and coats in the off-season. We have a fabulous selection of holiday items that make great gifts!

«Tommy’s Folly Boutique and Home is open seven days a week in season, from 10am to 10pm!

O

ur store carries a large variety of items, including the area’s best selection of magazines and newspapers to read while you enjoy a pastry and beverage of choice from our coffee bar. There’s also a good selection of books (perfect for the beach), and many of the toiletries that are forgotten at home, like razors, shaving cream and toothpaste, along with a broad range of over-the-counter medicines and sunscreens. If you want to purchase a Congress Hall sweatshirt or a stuffed Blue Pig, this is the store you need. Or, if you would like a game for your kids to play while you are having a relaxing dinner, head to the General Store! By the way… in 1816 Thomas Hughes built the original Congress Hall, which he liked to call The Big House. The locals, however, nicknamed the hotel Tommy’s Folly because they never thought the place would turn a profit. (Yes, they were wrong.) You can read the full history of Congress Hall in a beautifully-illustrated coffee table book, titled, what else… Tommy’s Folly. It is also available at Tommy’s Folly General Store.

elcome to Cape May’s premier shopping destination. West End Garage, housed in a building that actually began life as a garage and a gas station, was launched by Cape Resorts Group in the summer of 2009 and is now a yearround magnet for shoppers looking for quality goods and delightful surprises. Located just five minutes from the heart of historic downtown Cape May, across from charming Wilbraham Park, the West End Garage features more than 30 booths stocked by artisans and independent business owners, from Cape May to Pennsylvania, and sometimes a little further afield. Much of the inspiration for this new shopping experience came from a local group called Artists’ Cooperative Gallery, which showcases the work of 26 local artists, offering various mediums for sale, as well as art classes and events. “The work of these talented artisans is

24 local artists working in various media, providing support for each other and sharing our art with the community. Join us the Second Sunday of every month for a reception and meet the featured artists.

pending a day shopping in Cape May is not like going to the mall. Not even close. There are no chain stores, no massive electronics outlets, no jostling, impatient crowds. Aren’t you glad?! No, in Cape May shopping is all about the element of surprise. Yes, there are the ubiquitous T-shirt shops and souvenir stores selling plastic trinkets, BuT... there are also some excellent, quirky stores selling products that inspire and delight you, which is what a shopping experience SHOuLD be all about. By all means begin on the Washington Street Mall, which benefited from a

major face-lift three years ago. Brick pavers were installed and trees were removed, allowing for a better view of the charmingly random, brightly-painted collection of Victorian buildings. Next to the famous mall clock is a local landmark, the Whale’s Tale, which has been in business for four decades. You’ll love the exotic selection of shells from all over the world, the wonderful array of jewelry (including semiprecious, pearl and beach-themed), the area’s best selection of greeting cards and children’s books and toys. Take your time looking... and don’t forget to check out the Whale’s Tale’s new sister store, Splash, which is located behind it on

Carpenter’s Lane. And don’t forget those back streets. Many of our favorite stores are located off the mall. in fact, one of them, Victorious, is REALLY convenient for guests of Congress Hall – it’s in the lobby! This store stocks a superb collection of antique and estate jewelry. its sister store, Pink, is across the street from Congress Hall, located in the famous Pink House. Pink has a dazzling selection of designer wear and accessories.
