Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Friday, January 16, 6:00 PM Temple

Speaker: Myrlie Evers-Williams Join us for another uplifting celebration of the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at our annual MLK Shabbat Evening Service. Myrlie Evers-Williams will be our keynote speaker. She is a civil rights activist and journalist who worked to seek justice for the murder of her husband, Medgar Evers, in 1963. She has served as Chairperson of the NAACP, has received many honors for her work, and delivered the invocation at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Once again, the Members of the NW Community Gospel Choir and CBI’s Kol Echad choir will share their voices to help make the music of the era come alive.

Knowing the Heart of the Stranger by Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor Last November and December, our high school students met on two separate Sundays with students from the Muslim Educational Trust, a private Islamic day school. Amid ice-breaking events involving catching a beach ball, sharing lunch together, and presenting what Judaism/Islam is from their perspectives, two very different groups of teens began to talk to each other. A small step, but such an important one. How we continue to build understanding depends on gatherings like these which have to be intentionally planned and which we are committed to continuing for our kids and for ourselves. Each Jewish teen told a story of how they experience being Jewish in America, and each Muslim teen answered with their own story of living as the “other.” The very real and deep pain of prejudice and marginalization that other minorities experience is not really understood until we hear an individual tell her story just to us.

This month of January is a reunion for us and a different minority community, the African-American community of Portland, with whom we also have little connection unless we make it happen. What began as an opportunity to mark the civil holiday honoring the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has grown over the years. With the immense knowledge and guidance shared by Ron Silver, we now look forward each year to hearing from nationally prominent leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, figures who have shaped the history of our country with their words and deeds. The American Civil Rights Movement is inextricably tied to the church which gave African-Americans a base for hope and shelter. The full expression of pain and longing for equality is found in the music of the spiritual. Congregation Beth Israel’s instrumentalists and the singers in our congregational choir, Kol Echad, look forward every year to collaborating with the emotionally charged singers of the Northwest Community Gospel Choir. Through the beautiful music of our service woven together with gospel music, our disparate communities come together, if just for one night. This year, we are privileged to host Myrlie Evers-Williams, widow of murdered civil rights activist Medgar Evers and former head of the NAACP. Do not miss the opportunity to hear this remarkable woman and to sing together with the assembled communities of our own congregation and neighboring churches. continued on p. 3

B’nei Mitzvah

Announcements

Jeremy Alan Davis Jeremy Davis will become Bar Mitzvah on January 17, 2015. He is the son of Barry and Bonnie Davis and older brother of Jordan. Jeremy attends the International School of Beaverton. His on-going Mitzvah Project focuses on the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association, Inc. (NTSAD), an agency that helps families with children who have Tay-Sachs and similar diseases. This is especially important to Jeremy and his family, since his older brother, Adam, died from Tay-Sachs before Jeremy was born. Jeremy is supporting NTSAD’s work in three ways: he raised money for research by holding a bake sale in September 2014; he’s helped to raise awareness by encouraging CBI families to attend the educational and screening event for Jewish Genetic Diseases held at the MJCC in October 2014; and he has sold Helping Hand Grant raffle tickets to raise money for families to attend the annual NTSAD Family Conference. The Helping Hand Grant provides scholarship to families in need. You can learn more about NTSAD and what you can do by visiting their website at ntsad.org.

Gertrude Jean Smith Gertie Smith will become Bat Mitzvah on January 24, 2015. She is the daughter of David Smith and Libby Schwartz, older sister of Ira, and granddaughter of CBI members Jerry and Dana Schwartz. Gertie attends Lake Oswego Junior High School. An avid competitive swimmer for more than four years – first Synchronized and then Swim Team - she has chosen to support USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash Campaign, a national non-profit organization formed by Olympian Cullen Jones. Make a Splash is a child-focused water safety initiative that partners with learn-to-swim providers in an effort to teach every child in America to swim: www.makeasplash.org.

Lawren Rose Paris Lawren Paris will become Bat Mitzvah on January 31, 2015. She is the daughter of Anna and Steve Paris and older sister of Leah. A student at Cedar Park Middle School in Beaverton, Lawren has chosen to work with Children’s Book Bank for her Mitzvah Project. A favorite agency for many in the community, CBB provides free books for low-income families with the goal of increasing literacy in children. Lawren explains why this project is important to her: “Since I was a toddler I have loved books, and I want other kids to experience the joy books can bring.” In addition to volunteering at the Book Bank, Lawren is holding a book drive to collect 300 new or gently-used books, which will benefit 20 children, giving them the opportunity to read their own books and increase their literacy and love of reading. To learn more, visit www. childrensbookbank.org.

The Board of Trustees is thrilled to report...

that Rabbi Joseph will continue to serve our congregation as our Associate Rabbi for an additional five years beginning in July 2015. Since Rabbi Joseph arrived in Portland in July 2012 as our Assistant Rabbi, she has become integral to our community, bringing new perspectives, inspiring action, and building engagement. We are grateful to the Betty Rosenfeld family for establishing the Assistant/Associate Rabbi Fund to support this position, and we thank you, our congregants, for your additional and continued support of this fund. We plan to celebrate Rabbi Joseph’s promotion and her continued presence at CBI at our 2015 annual meeting this spring. Please join us!

Don’t forget! Please return your Directory form to the CBI office by January 15, 2015! Last month, you should have received a notice about our upcoming printed directory. Knowing the Heart of the Stranger We know our own pain but must push ourselves to listen to and understand the pain of another: a Muslim girl whose gentle mother was screamed at in a Target store and called a terrorist, a black father who is at a loss for what he should tell his two sons as they approach adolescence and the likelihood that they will be assumed to be guilty because of the color of their skin. There is a lot of communication in our world but far too little understanding. The last Shabbat of this month marks Shabbat Shira, the Sabbath of Song, commemorating our peoples’ miraculous escape from slavery through the Sea of Reeds. No miracle would have happened there without someone taking the first step, being brave enough to venture into unknown waters. That miracle led to a central message often repeated in the Torah: we must treat well the stranger, because we were strangers. May the song that we sing reverberate with the lessons learned from the stranger in our midst, the stranger we have been throughout history until someone took the time to truly listen and see us.

SAVE THE DATE: Joint programming with the Muslim Education Trust

Join us at the Muslim Education Trust on Saturday, January 24 for a screening of Out of Cordoba, followed by a dialogue and discussion of the film on Saturday, February 21. Watch our e-mail blasts for more information.

Developing CBI We are listening by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director Plans are well underway for CBI’s fourth annual Taste of Temple. Once again, we are blessed with a committed, energetic cadre of committee members who are working to create another fantastic gathering of food, drink, and fun! This group is carrying on the tradition of bringing multiple generations together under one roof to share good fun, good times, and good community building. It will all take place on Sunday, February 8, from 5-8 PM at Castaway. Under the leadership of chairs extraordinaire Tony and Bianca Urdes, and with the experienced guidance of our special events manager, Stephen Cassell, our committee will bring together some of the best restaurants, vintners, and brewers that Portland has to offer. This is no small feat, as Portland’s reputation for being an outstanding mecca for food and beverage continues to grow. Along the way, though, we had an epiphany. Our peeps started complaining that we were not asking enough of them, that we needed to schedule more meetings. Imagine our surprise! This may just sound like rhetoric to you, but

Call to Action: Participation by Tony and Bianca Urdes Taste of Temple Co-Chairs Taste of Temple, our much-anticipated annual tradition at Congregation Beth Israel, is fast approaching. Your wonderful Taste of Temple volunteers are working really hard to continue the tradition of success and raise the forks even higher. “More friend-raiser and more FUNdraiser” is what we are trying to achieve collectively. Featuring outstanding food presented by local leading chefs, as well as wine and spirits from our local wineries and distilleries, this event will bring together connoisseurs from the CBI community as well as non-members. What can you do to support Congregation Beth Israel through Taste of Temple? How can you become involved?

4

I am here to tell you that those who have gotten involved in the planning of our fundraising events have reported that in addition to experiencing a wonderful feeling of success, the best part of being involved is the great camaraderie that grows among those who care deeply about their CBI community. I want to be sure you know that you, too, are invited and in fact encouraged to get involved. Just let me know of your interest, and I promise to find the best place for you! I am often asked how I feel about my experience working as the Development Director at Congregation Beth Israel. It is with great pleasure that I tell people that, for me, working with our incredible team of professionals and lay leaders is truly joyful. While we may all come to this congregation for different reasons, seeing our programs and services impact Jewish lives and create Jewish memories fulfills me in ways that make a difference in my life, just as I hope it makes a difference in yours. And of course, the greatest pleasure comes from getting to know so many wonderful members of our congregation. At CBI we are all about getting our members engaged in a way that is meaningful to each of them. I am so pleased to play a part in that goal and even more pleased when you let me know you are listening to me just as we are listening to you and responding by getting involved and engaged. There is room for everyone, so come on in! And be sure to join us on February 8th at Castaway – we’ll be raising friends and FUN(ds).

IGN UP FOR OR ORGANIZE S A HOUSE PARTY: Our House Party Committee is planning a wide range of offerings, and there will be something for everyone. View the list and sign up online. Additionally, the Committee would love to help you organize and host a House Party! VOLUNTEER AND PLANT A ‘TEER: There are very many opportunities to volunteer on one of our subcommittees, to plan the event, or to help the day of the event. Don’t forget to invite others to volunteer! A diverse group of volunteers means a more exciting and dynamic event.

There are many ways you can get involved, and we are thankful to many of you who are already engaged with the event. Contact the CBI office at (503) 222-1069 or visit the website to learn more about each of these opportunities.

SUGGEST A VENDOR: The best ideas come from you. Please let us know if you would like to introduce your favorite restaurant, winery, or distillery to Taste of Temple.

BUY TICKETS: Taste of Temple is Sunday, February 8.

SUPPORT MAZON: 3% of ticket sales will be donated to MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger.

INVITE A FRIEND: There are still many congregants who have not been exposed to Taste of Temple. Invite them, create fellowship, and make new friends.

So, what can you do to support Congregation Beth Israel through Taste of Temple? How can you become involved with this wonderful Friend Raiser and FUNd Raiser?

BECOME A SPONSOR: This year, we are pleased to present a special sponsorship package. We invite you to become part of this exciting opportunity to participate.

There are many ways. We hope you will join us. Please give us a call, and we will help you find your niche. We look forward to welcoming you to the TOT team.

Education Happy Secular New Year, CBI Families! by Shoshanna Pro Youth Group Director I hope that everyone had lovely holidays! These past few months have been very busy and fun for the middle and high school youth group kids. Dor Chadash, our middle school junior youth group, came together in October for a spooky, fun night filled with mud at a haunted corn maze! Many of the middle schoolers have also learned leadership skills, which were shown off when they ran the Midrasha Hanukah program night in December! This night was filled with excitement and fun as they created a school-wide scavenger hunt that was filled with Hanukah games. PARTY, the high school youth group, has also had a busy first few months. We have traveled to Washington state for multiple retreats with NFTY Northwest for both a leadership training seminar and a 200+ teen kallah! As if that were not enough activity, PARTY has also created their own local events. Our kick-off night was a lighthearted pumpkin carving and movie night. This was followed by a fabulous Hanukah shul-in with extended invitations to teens all over the NFTY Northwest region. Participants joined the

larger community in services and later a teen-led program about energy conservation. With all these fabulous things happening, it is hard to believe Dor Chadash and PARTY still had one more awesome night! We partook in a Portland-wide Hanukah night as part of a series of community school events. Members of our PARTY community met with other teens in the city to plan an event for over 200 Jewish Portlanders!

Keep your eyes open for more to come from these amazing teens! This January, some of our high school youth groupers will be traveling to Boise, Idaho to meet the Jewish community and work on social action projects at a regional event. Following that, we will also travel to Atlanta, Georgia for the NFTY Convention in February! Junior Youth Group “takeovers” of Midrasha and Portland-wide community nights will continue to happen. Dor Chadash also has some wonderful community service opportunities and fundraising events coming up. Stay tuned for all our youth programming as we continue to grow leaders in the community. At Congregation Beth Israel, we have many entry points for teens to get involved with our community, from academic learning, madrichim (high school teaching assistants for our lower grades), and of course, our middle and high school youth groups! Please contact me at Shoshanna@bethisrael-pdx.org or (503) 222-2037 to learn more about upcoming Shoshanna Pro, Max Winthrop, and Emma Rosicky enjoying the a bit of beach chofesh events and ways for your teen to connect to the (free time) at Camp Casey on Whidbey Island Beth Israel and northwest Jewish teen community. during NFTY Northwest’s Fall Kallah.

Reflecting on the New Year by Deborah Kaplan Early Childhood Education Director Happy 2015! With the arrival of the New Year, I find myself reflecting on the influence Jewish early childhood education has on my life. I remember Daphna, the director of Stephen S. Wise Temple Preschool (now called Wise Early Childhood Center) where I attended preschool in the mid-’70s. All the children loved her. I saw her daily, and her office door was always open. She would drop in on our class, read a story, sing a song, or just give me a hug. I have fond memories from my preschool experience of playing in the realistic dress-up corner, singing songs, and baking challah every Friday for Shabbat. Daphna built a community for all of us. It felt like home and made me want to be her. I taught preschool at two Jewish preschools in California and ten years ago finally found my home teaching kindergarten at CBI’s religious school. Because we teach what we know, I ran my classroom like the day school I attended and inspired the children to find their Jewish identity through art, music, dance, stories, Hebrew, and cooking.

In these ten years, both my ambition and the understanding of the senior staff have led me to my position as Early Childhood Education Director for Beth Israel Preschool. In the two years of my leadership position, I have hired all-new faculty with education degrees, worked with the teachers to create lesson plans and thematic units that support creativity, and brought the school through the accreditation process – all under the umbrella of Jewish education. In my position as ECE Director, I strongly believe in collaborating with the teachers to create an environment that enables children to ask questions, build answers, and make sense of the world around them while discovering their Jewish identity. Because aspects of the Reggio Emilia Approach educational philosophy can be adapted so easily to a Jewish learning experience, I am helping the teachers through workshops and daily provocations and conversations to effectively observe, record, and document daily classroom inquiry. I feel at home here at CBI. I am dedicated, ambitious, and enthusiastic about Jewish early childhood education. I feel like we can always be better at what we do. My goal here at Congregation Beth Israel is to create with teachers, families, and the children the loving, supportive, nurturing community that I had with Daphna in my first preschool experience.

Beth Israel Preschool Open House Tuesday, January 20, 5:30-7:00 PM Sherman Education Center Come learn more about what CBI’s preschool has to offer! This is a play- and arts-based preschool for ages 2-5. We boast a low teacher-child ratio, and enrichment programs include art, science, yoga, soccer, gymnastics, music, Hebrew, and Spanish. Contact Early Childhood Education Director Deborah Kaplan at (503) 222-2037 or deborah@bethisrael-pdx.org to learn more.

We’re on a Mission from G-d

March 4, 2015...

We are pleased to announce a slight change to our Catering Panel, beginning in January 2015. Food in Bloom, the catering company with whom we’ve had the longest relationship – dating back to 1994! – is now part of VT Group, a larger event company representing a number of catering and venue options. We invite you to learn more about them: VT Group (503) 297-9635 www.vtgrouppdx.com VT Group is the company behind the most successful and highly-reviewed catering businesses in Portland, consisting of

Food in Bloom Catering, Vibrant Table Catering & Events, and f&b catering & café. The three companies, each with their own character and specialties, can respond to client catering requests ranging from plated dinner & buffet experiences to station & small plate meals to deliveries. VT Group offers help with venue, decor, floral design, and lighting to make their clients’ visions a reality. Downtown venues include the Exchange Ballroom, Portland Art Museum, Portland Center Stage, Treasury Ballroom, and LanSu Chinese Gardens. Visit the individual companies at www.vibranttable.com, www.foodinbloom.com, and www.fandbcafe.com.
