SOCIAL ACTION

Social Action at CBI One size does not fit all. Our commitment to social justice at CBI takes many forms.

Brit Olam, Covenant with our World Within the context of this URJ/WRJ program we have chosen to focus on Immigration Justice, Gun Violence Prevention, and (under the leadership of the WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood) Reproductive Health and Rights. Shabbat programs this fall included an Immigration Justice service during the week of Sukkot. In keeping with the teaching of welcoming the stranger, we hosted and shared the stories of immigrant and refugee guests from Iraq, Eritrea, the former Soviet Union and Mexico. Last month, we joined many congregations statewide in marking a weekend of Sabbath activity for Gun Violence Prevention. The Immigration/Refugee sub-committee learned about the work of IMIrJ, (Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice) from Executive Director Alaide Vilchiss Ibarra at it’s December meeting. We have exciting opportunities to partner in education and advocacy, the latter in support of asylum seekers moving through the legal process to be granted permanent status. We are continuing to support our adopted Eritrean refugee family with tutoring and life skills mentoring. Jake Weigler, from State of Safety, spoke to the Social Action Committee about his organization’s work in promoting gun safety and responsible

gun ownership. Sadly, Oregon exceeds the national average for gun deaths per capita. The 2020 OR State Legislative Session will be a time when we can lobby for State of Safety’s safe gun storage legislation. This spring we plan to partner with Lift Every Voice Oregon in support of OR State 2020 gun violence prevention ballot measures related to semi-automatic firearms. As a component of their Reproductive Health and Rights focus, the WRJ/Beth Sisterhood has an ongoing drive to collect feminine product donations. PARTY (Portland Area Reform Temple Youth) is a partner in this endeavor.

NW Towers Our annual Thanksgiving Dinner at NW Towers was a huge success. Approximately one hundred guests enjoyed the delicious meal and the festive atmosphere. The residents were truly grateful for the opportunity to celebrate. Special thanks to cochairs Elizabeth Friedenwald and Rebecca Friedenwald-Fishman, and to all the volunteers. Homework Club continues, meeting on Tuesdays at 4:00 PM. Our students benefit from the individual attention we provide, and we’d like to expand this program to include a second day each week. If you’re able to help on Wednesdays afternoons, please contact Tracy Manaster Alifanz in the CBI Main Office at (503) 222-1069 or email SAC@bethisrael-pdx.org.

Kids’ Winter Coat Drive Project Lemonade offers kids in foster care the opportunity to shop for clothes at their free store. As this is being written, we are hosting a winter coat drive to help stock their store. We hope our December collection will provide warmth and comfort for many kids living in foster care.

Red Cross Blood Drives Pikuach nefesh, saving a life, is elevated above all other actions. A member of our CBI community, Sarah Pitman, has taken this principle to heart. She recently brought a fifth Red Cross Blood drive to our campus. She’s done this as a one person organizer, without formal support of Social Action or other CBI groups. Thank you, Sarah for all your mitzvot.

High Holidays Funds for Food Thanks to all who generously supported our annual appeal, and to Robert Peltz, our leader in this effort. Our final total was $15,747! Our donations support our partners working to alleviate hunger in our community.

Social Action Content on CBI website Please check the CBI website at www.bethisrael-pdx.org/community/ social-action/ for updates on Social Action activities. Participation in the Social Action Committee and Subcommittees is open to all members of the CBI community. Sally Rosenfeld Social Action Chair SAC@bethisrael-pdx.org

Portland and beyond. He has been honored with the Emerald Award from AKA, Inc., The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives’ (NOBLE) Drum Major for Justice Award, and, in May of 2019, was named by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon as the Ecumenist of The Year.

OUR LEADERSHIP

Travel and Transformation by Cantor Ida Rae Cahana Senior Cantor This year, our high school students are on the road! For the first time, eighth and ninth graders were able to go to L.A. with Rabbi Joseph and Chelsea Ferguson, our Senior Program Manager-Youth and Family, to learn about doing justice in one of America’s largest cities. In February, our tenth graders will fly to Washington, D.C., as they have for decades, to participate in the Reform movement’s Religious Action Center “L’taken” program. Students are engaged in trusting the power of their voices to effect change on issues studied through a Jewish lens. Last but not least is our eleventh and twelfth graders’ Civil Rights Trip, which I want to tell you more about. There are, admittedly, certain parts of our great country which I have never visited and never knew I wanted to visit, until recently. This past November, I was privileged to travel to deep south Mississippi with Chelsea Ferguson, fifteen of our juniors and seniors, and our amazing congregant, Civil Rights’ history expert, and tour guide, Ron Silver. No amount of trip planning could fully prepare us for what we experienced in those meaning-packed four days. Ron met with the teens for four preparatory

sessions, including a Sunday morning service at our sister church, Vancouver Avenue First Baptist. Our teens completed assigned readings and watched documentaries prior to our departure. Each trip participant researched one significant person whose steps we traced and whose stories were told in the city of Jackson, in Neshoba County, or in the fields of the Mississippi Delta. We shared dinner on our first full day with Civil Rights leaders Hezekiah and Chris Watkins, who generously shared their time and their memories. Reporter Jerry Mitchell met us for lunch and revealed pieces of the harrowing stories he couldn’t fit into his most recent book. Ron led us to the unmarked spot where three civil rights workers: Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman were murdered by the KKK in the Freedom Summer of 1964. One of our students, Rij Dorfman, had brought his saxophone along “just in case,” and it was there that he pulled it out and we sang together before we recited Kaddish. I share this one small memory of a transformative trip because it is experiences like these which focus us and remind us that as Jews, we are commanded to be or l’goyim, a light to the nations. How we shine a light in dark times and places depends on what we learn and see for ourselves to be true. Each of us had the opportunity to ride, walk, sing, and sit in places that

had witnessed inconceivable brutality and really open our eyes to the presence of prejudice which still permeates our world. Each of us also were able to find hope in the conversations we shared with each other and our teachers, those physically present and those present through the force of memory. We reached the park where a statue of Fannie Lou Hamer rose with the power of her courageous voice as we listened to a recording of her singing “Go tell it on the mountain…to let my people go!” A couple of our teens reflected afterwards that they identified with Fannie Lou who had been overlooked for much of her life. We learned about the humanity of these heroes and in doing so, we hope to be heroic in every way we can when we raise our voices against hatred in our world. Please join us at 6:00 PM on Friday, January 17 for our annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Shabbat commemoration where the trip participants will light Shabbat candles in an inspiring service of beautiful prayer and music. Deep thanks to Jason Waxman for supporting the L.A. trip and to Roscoe and Debra Nelson for their support of the Civil rights trip. And thanks to all of you for continuing to send our kids out into the world and support us as we endeavor to open their eyes to all that still needs changing and all that is eternally meaningful in their Jewish heritage.

If you want to be an active member - great. If you never want to attend a meeting or take on a task - no problem. Your membership dues will allow us to continue with our work. So what’s in it for you? What’s in it for you is the opportunity to be part of a group of wonderful women that work actively in and for our community in every sense of that word: the CBI community, the greater PDX community, and the global community. We march, advocate, and donate to support breast cancer research, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA rights, pay equity, and immigration rights and needs and more. Yes – we bake cookies and prepare food for the ill. It’s true that many of our members are older. Ok – we admit that our members include a Representative to the US Congress, health care providers, entrepreneurs, educators, working parents and stay-at-home parents, artists, retirees, newlyweds, theater people, advocates, etc. Maybe your mom was a member of Sisterhood and you think – oy vey. Well, if your mom was supporting her congregation as part of a Sisterhood, then we say wow – your mom is amazing! There may be women who think this is “not for me.” But Sisterhood is a place for all women and anyone who identifies as female. We support CBI through our words, actions, and financial donations. We are stronger together when you are part of WRJ/BIS Sisterhood and your voice joins our chorus (no - you don’t have to sing!). Please renew your membership or join us as a new member! No you don’t get a tote bag or a sticker, but new Sisterhood members will enjoy a one time 10% discount at the Gift Shop!

SWEETS FOR RABBI JOSEPH

The CBI community will celebrate the upcoming marriage of Rabbi Rachel Joseph and Dr. Sara Spettel with a special blessing at Friday Evening Shabbat Services on March 13–and Sisterhood will provide the sweets for the Oneg following! Please email Debbie Braymer at djsbraymer@gmail.com if you are interested in contributing.
